Good evening and thanks for coming out tonight to support your local team. If truth be told, we’d probably prefer not to be staging home games in the two Tuesdays leading up to Christmas as winter begins to bite, for the obvious effect it has on attendances and atmosphere. But there we are – and with a few of our U23s likely to be involved this evening we need to offer the boys plenty of encouragement during what is sure to be a tough game against one of the sides – along with Ramsgate, Cray Valley PM and perhaps Sheppey – with aspirations for those two promotion places. We make the short trip to Three Bridges on Saturday. Again, it seems odd that a local derby is scheduled for nine days before Christmas but not on either of the match dates during the holiday period, when there would be a much bigger crowd especially with Crawley Town at home on Saturday as well, a fixture clash which always effects Bridges’ attendances. Anyway, let’s hope we can continue our unbeaten Isthmian record there – and that we go into the tussle on the back of a good performance against the Brickies tonight. MANAGER’S NOTES Evening everyone as we welcome you to tonight’s rearranged fixture against one of this year’s title favourites Sittingbourne.

Drew Cooney

Thanks, Drew

After last week’s really impressive 4-1 home win against Merstham we found ourselves back into our inconsistent form with an away defeat at this year’s FA Cup 1st round proper contestants Sheppey United on Saturday. I’m not going to lie but I thought the 3-0 score line was really harsh! A tight first half and then two goals handed to them on a plate didn’t really reflect the efforts the lads put in. The day didn’t get off to the best of starts when we lost Omar in the warmup and two or three of the starting XI had injury niggles when we kicked off. We then lost our skipper Glenn Wilson deep into the second half. Glenn got a nasty bang to the ear/temple in the first half and struggled through the majority of the game. Finally, he had to be withdrawn and, in the end, needed hospital treatment on Saturday night.

We will now be without the skipper for at least 2-3 weeks, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Tonight’s team is going to have to be put together with a number of youngsters involved so we would really appreciate as much support as we can, and I would encourage all of you to get behind the boys. www.egtfc.co.uk

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Sittingbourne. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Brickies’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Peter Cruise and his assistants Stephen Hughes and Ryan Calve. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. Ryan Maxwell’s Sittingbourne are currently third in the league with 28 points from 14 matches. They are three points behind both leaders Ramsgate who have played two fewer matches and second placed Three Bridges who have played one more match. Bridges are at home tonight against Cray Valley PM who are fourth but they have only played 11 matches and are on 27 points. Drew Cooney’s Wasps are 13th with 16 points after 13 matches. We have always seemed to struggle against the Brickies with our last win here all the way back in November 2018 when we came from behind to win 2-1. Drew and his team will be determined to buck that recent trend and record a long overdue victory this evening.

twice in the second half and Glenn went off. When I got home, we had a power cut! We had an impressive 4-1 win the previous week over Merstham coming from one down. This win followed a 3-0 away defeat at Beckenham Town so hopefully the pattern will continue tonight with a Wasps victory. We make the short journey to Three Bridges on Saturday and are at home again next Tuesday evening against Lancing (ko 7.30pm). This is followed by two further home matches: Boxing Day against Sevenoaks Town (ko 3pm) and Saturday 30th December when we host Hythe Town. Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoy the match Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

We all send our best wishes to our captain Glenn Wilson who suffered a bad concussion at Sheppey on Saturday and had to be taken to hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery. I would like to thank the Sheppey physio for her assistance off the pitch and after the match. Saturday was not a good day all round. Firstly I took the wrong lane at the major roadworks on the way to Sheppey and ended up having to take a 22 mile detour down the M2 to Faversham and back! Then Omar Folkes injured himself in the warm-up and we conceded after 15 minutes to what looked a suspiciously offside goal. We then conceded www.egtfc.co.uk

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

our fifth consecutive home match – Bruce Talbot in his club notes tells us that he “stopped trying to fathom out the machinations of the County League fixture list a while ago” but he would add this 2009 example to his wonderings. In welcoming Hailsham the programme tells us that their manager Kenny McCreadie – whose son Trevor is still scoring goals in 2023 - had been our manager just two weeks before the match. Steve Johnson was now our manager. The previous Saturday we had drawn 2-2 with one of the best sides in the league from Wick and the three various writers in the programme – Bruce Talbot, manager Steve Johnson and chairman Richard Tramontin - all talk about the decision with some 20 minutes left to push centre-half Matt Crane up to the forward line. Within a minute or two he scored the equalising goal. We were 16th and Hailsham were second from bottom. We had already played the away league match at the end of August and we had had a comfortable 5-1 win. And we won again, this time 4-2. A hat-trick from Danny Powell plus a Luke Piscina goal.

On the same bench two weeks ago - now rival managers

We haven’t played too many games in the past on today’s date – so I’m going to start my look back with a game played one day earlier. A Sussex County League division one match East Grinstead v Southwick on Saturday 11 December 2004. The club notes remind us that we had already played Southwick twice so far. First of them came here at East Court at the start of October in the Sussex Charity RUR Cup – a competition we had won in the previous season and which, of course, we were keen to hang on to. And we had indeed gone into the next round with a 3-1 win with all three of our goals coming from Kris Trevor. On the other hand down in Southwick for a league match in the middle of November didn’t suit us at all and Southwick won very comfortably 4-0. We weren’t helped by Dave Gellatly receiving a red card. The club notes then talk about the Three Bridges home league match which we had just played three days before the above Southwick match. The notes take the view that the proper time for games against our close rivals are Tuesday evenings at the start and end of the season. And Wednesday’s game was a flat one with very little edge to it as well as a much smaller gate than the matches normally attract. So perhaps the fog that caused the match to be abandoned a few minutes into the second half – with nobody having scored - was nature’s way of telling the league that the EG v TB game is not a game for Wednesday evenings in December. A look at our programme for the Southwick game shows us struggling a bit in 16th place out of the 20 teams in the league with Southwick having had a good last few weeks which had taken them up to fifth. Remember that 4-0 defeat away to Southwick? This time the 4-0 win was ours with goals from Lee Hanson, Dave Gellatly, Chris Arrow and, of course, Kris Trevor. A few years later and we have East Grinstead v Hailsham on 12 December 2009 in division one of the County League in what would be

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

A cracking finish from Jerson against Merstham in our 4-1 win.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUESTS

SITTINGBOURNE The club was started as Sittingbourne United back in 1881. In 1886 it became Sittingbourne FC and played at the Bull Ground in the centre of town. In 1892 the club gained senior status. The club won its first major title in 1897/98 when it won the Kent League. The Kent Senior Cup followed in 1902. After the First World War more senior cup and league titles followed with the club also enjoying the first of three spells in the Southern League. The club reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1962 but lost 3-0 at Hinckley Athletic. Back in the Kent League Sittingbourne were one of the strongest teams throughout the 1970s and 1980s - unlike the decade that followed, when what happened on the field got more attention than what went on off it. In February 1990, the club decided to sell its town centre Bull Ground (now Sainsbury’s supermarket) and buy a 23-acre site on the town’s Eurolink estate. A magnificent stadium with a 2,000-seat stand, restaurants, bars, sumptuous dressing rooms, greyhound track and training pitches was the envy of nonleague football. There was success on the pitch when, in their first season at Central Park, Sittingbourne won the Kent League without losing a game – the only senior football team throughout Europe to achieve that feat in the 1990/91 season. Promotion to the Southern League followed with the championship of the Southern Division secured in 1993 followed by promotion to highest level achieved by the club since it’s foundation. The ground record was broken five times during that one season with 5,951 spectators watching a friendly with Spurs and more than 3,000 at the match with local rivals Gravesend – a Beazer Homes Southern Division record. More money flowed in with the £21,000 sale of Neil Emblen and Mickey Harle to MilIwall before the bubble spectacularly burst. Debts of more than £1 million were revealed, the team got relegated, the ground was closed for a while despite the intervention of the local council and the club was wound up. Somehow Sittingbourne have survived it all and even got

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

back to the Southern Premier Division during this traumatic time (in Steve Lovell’s first spell as manager), finishing an equal highest ever eighth before the financial problems again began to bite and relegation followed. Because of the FA reconstruction of the pyramid Sittingbourne faced a brand-new challenge playing a number of “unknown” teams in the Ryman Isthmian League in season 2006-2007. The 2009/10 season was one of the best since the financial problems as Sittingbourne won the Kent Senior Cup for the first time in 50 years. For the 2013-2014 campaign, Sittingbourne decided to leave their home of ten years and accept an invitation to move to Woodstock Park a 14-acre area with superb social facilities. After a three-year reign as manager, Nick Davis resigned and coach Aslan Odev took over and after initially taking The Brickies to the play-offs he stood down, paving the way in January 2019 for Dover Athletic Academy development manager Chris Lynch, to take over. His assistant Darren Blackburn had a spell in charge during the Covid-affected 2019/20 season before Davis returned for a second spell. He resigned in early January 2023 after 12 games without a win and the club brought in Ryan Maxwell to take his place. The Brickies arrive today in fourth place with just one defeat in eight league games.
