Good afternoon and welcome to our visitors from East Kent, who are having a good season and have in the past been tough opponents for us. While we have been inactive since the home loss to a very useful Cray Valley PM side a fortnight ago, it's been three weeks since the Brickies saw competitive action. It all adds up to hopefully being a very watchable spectacle this afternoon. While we battle for league points, three of our bretheren are involved in FA Cup first round action this weekend, which indicates that the league is pretty strong this season. Good luck anyway to Cray Valley, Sheppey and Ramsgate. We're back here on Tuesday against Eastbourne United in the Sussex Senior Cup.

MANAGER’S NOTES

Drew Cooney

We have Eastbourne United on Tuesday in the Sussex Senior Cup so that will be another good opportunity to get minutes into lads coming back and a few from the under-23s will get their opportunity to impress. Matt Daniels has been back in regular training so will be aiming to get him some minutes before the end of this month with the prospect of seeing him back before Christmas. As always we thank everyone for their support and encourage as many people as we can to get down to the home games, Thanks again, Drew

Afternoon all as we welcome you all back for another tough game against Sittingbourne. I’m a big admirer of Sittingbourne and think since Ryan Maxwell came in last season they have gone from strength to strength. Their run towards the end of last season was unbelievable and if only this had been put together earlier they would have been in the play-offs. I think they will definitely finish in the top five this season and no doubt will have ambitions for automatic promotion. They can mix it up and play direct, they are big and strong from front to back with plenty of experience from several leagues above, so will be another really tough ask for my lads. The Cray Valley game a fortnight ago was really disappointing. As I said previously. they are my league title favourites, but for 35 minutes we were well in the game and had three or four really good chances and didn’t take them. We then found ourselves conceding two quick goals before the half-time whistle which killed the game off. We won’t be expected to beat teams like Cray Valley given their budgets so we need to make sure we beat the teams around us and work hard to make games against the top five teams as difficult as we can for them and take our chances when we get them. The lads have had a well earned weekend off and we have had them in on Tuesday doing a strength and conditioning class at Hever House of Health. This was a really good exercise and got the lads together for a hard session and a good recovery session too.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for this afternoon’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Sittingbourne. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Brickies’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Colman O'Meara and his assistants Joshua Howard and Stephen Ryan and observer Brian Smith. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. It’s been three weeks since Ryan Maxwell’s Sittingbourne played their last match, a 1-1 draw away at Burgess Hill which followed two wins at home against Herne Bay (2-0) and Erith & Belvedere (6-0). They are currently fourth in the league with 15 points from eight matches. They have won four, drawn three and lost just the one which was against Cray Valley PM. We have always seemed to struggle against the Brickies with our last win here all the way back in November 2018 when we came from behind to win 2-1. Drew Cooney and his team will be determined to buck that recent trend and record a long overdue victory this afternoon.

Cup against Hassocks. We are currently in 12th place in the league with 10 points from nine matches. We are at home again on Tuesday evening when we host Eastbourne United in the third round of the Sussex FA County Cup (ko 7.30pm). We travel to Littlehampton next Saturday and then back here the following Saturday against Lancing. Well done to our Under 23s who after comprehensively beating Chichester City 7-0 in the County Cup last week, went one better and recorded their first Suburban League victory here on Tuesday evening by 8-0 against Ash United. Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match, Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Wasps didn’t have a match last weekend as we were originally scheduled to travel to Ramsgate who should have then been in FA Trophy action, but their match at Hythe Town was postponed on the day and rearranged to Tuesday evening when they lost 3-1. Our last match was a 4-0 defeat to a very impressive Cray Valley PM here a fortnight ago and we wish them all the very best in their FA Cup First Round match at Charlton Athletic tomorrow evening which is being broadcast live on BBC2. Prior to that match, we thoroughly merited an unbeaten run of four league matches including three consecutive wins against Broadbridge Heath, Horndean and Ashford United and a win in the Sussex Senior www.egtfc.co.uk

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

one with a bright red front cover and lots and lots to read – a bit of colour through the rest of the programme and one or two photos would have made it even better. No great surprise that with a 5-0 win in their most recent league match they were in a good mood though their welcome to suggested that both clubs are having an inconsistent season. And for ourselves Simon Funnell had recently taken over as our manager. The programme’s league table for division one of the County League shows Hassocks in sixth place and ourselves five places lower. We had already made the trip to Hassocks’ Beacon Ground in September for our away league match and it was good to see their match report from that game - good because we had won that match 2-1 with an early goal from Tom Lyons and then a winner on the hour from John Paul Collier. But we weren’t able to repeat that performance and it was Hassocks going through to round four with a 2-0 win. This was to start a bad run for us through November including a 7-0 loss to Peacehaven and 5-0 to Lancing.

Programme cover from a Friday night game in 2006 v Wealden

We’ll have a look at a couple of programmes for games played in the past on the first few days of November. I’ll start with a slightly unusual midweek evening game East Grinstead v Wealden on Friday 3 November 2006 in division two of the Sussex County League. Playing on the Friday evening meant we could go ahead with our fireworks evening on the Saturday. Team manager Steve Norris had now been in charge for about a month and tells us that things have been going better than he expected with two wins and a draw in the most recent matches. One of those wins came away to Mile Oak who were given three penalties in the game – they scored twice but then missed once and we had won 3-2. Steve was also pleased that three former players had returned to us. All three were players we would consider to be proper East Grinstead players Dave Gellatly, Matt Thorpe and Adam Dart. Richard Tramontin’s chairman’s notes remind us that we had already played our away match at Wealden only three weeks ago with things ending up at 1-1 with both goals coming from penalties. The programme’s league table shows Wealden on top of the league with seven wins, one draw and one defeat. We were three places lower having played a couple more games – five wins, four draws and two defeats. So who would take the points on that floodlit Friday evening watched by our biggest gate of the season so far? Dave Gellatly, in his 200th game for the club, put us in front after about 30 minutes and after some 70 minutes, after Wealden ( AFC Uckfield in 2023) had missed a couple of good chances, Phil Thompson made it 2-0. And that’s how it ended. Moving on a few years we have another Friday evening game – this time an away match. Hassocks v East Grinstead on Friday 4 November 2011 in the Sussex Charity RUR Cup. It was a third round match after we had had no first round match followed by a 2-0 win away to Lancing in round two. The Hassocks programme was an excellent

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the recent fixture against Three Bridges foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour. Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

TODAY’s GUESTS

SITTINGBOURNE The club was started as Sittingbourne United back in 1881. In 1886 it became Sittingbourne FC and played at the Bull Ground in the centre of town. In 1892 the club gained senior status. The club won its first major title in 1897/98 when it won the Kent League. The Kent Senior Cup followed in 1902. After the First World War more senior cup and league titles followed with the club also enjoying the first of three spells in the Southern League. The club reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1962 but lost 3-0 at Hinckley Athletic. Back in the Kent League Sittingbourne were one of the strongest teams throughout the 1970s and 1980s - unlike the decade that followed, when what happened on the field got more attention than what went on off it. In February 1990, the club decided to sell its town centre Bull Ground (now Sainsbury’s supermarket) and buy a 23-acre site on the town’s Eurolink estate. A magnificent stadium with a 2,000-seat stand, restaurants, bars, sumptuous dressing rooms, greyhound track and training pitches was the envy of nonleague football. There was success on the pitch when, in their first season at Central Park, Sittingbourne won the Kent League without losing a game – the only senior football team throughout Europe to achieve that feat in the 1990/91 season. Promotion to the Southern League followed with the championship of the Southern Division secured in 1993 followed by promotion to highest level achieved by the club since it’s foundation. The ground record was broken five times during that one season with 5,951 spectators watching a friendly with Spurs and more than 3,000 at the match with local rivals Gravesend – a Beazer Homes Southern Division record. More money flowed in with the £21,000 sale of Neil Emblen and Mickey Harle to MilIwall before the bubble spectacularly burst. Debts of more than £1 million were revealed, the team got relegated, the ground was closed for a while despite the intervention of the local council and the club was wound up. Somehow Sittingbourne have survived it all and even got

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

back to the Southern Premier Division during this traumatic time (in Steve Lovell’s first spell as manager), finishing an equal highest ever eighth before the financial problems again began to bite and relegation followed. Because of the FA reconstruction of the pyramid Sittingbourne faced a brand-new challenge playing a number of “unknown” teams in the Ryman Isthmian League in season 2006-2007. The 2009/10 season was one of the best since the financial problems as Sittingbourne won the Kent Senior Cup for the first time in 50 years. For the 2013-2014 campaign, Sittingbourne decided to leave their home of ten years and accept an invitation to move to Woodstock Park a 14-acre area with superb social facilities. After a three-year reign as manager, Nick Davis resigned and coach Aslan Odev took over and after initially taking The Brickies to the play-offs he stood down, paving the way in January 2019 for Dover Athletic Academy development manager Chris Lynch, to take over. His assistant Darren Blackburn had a spell in charge during the Covid-affected 2019/20 season before Davis returned for a second spell. He resigned in early January 2023 after 12 games without a win and the club brought in Ryan Maxwell to take his place. The Brickies arrive today in fourth place with just one defeat in eight league games.
