WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
Good evening one and all and welcome to our first midweek game of the season and a visit from South Park, against whom we had some lively battles in our formative years in the Isthmian League.
Another disappointing result on Saturday against Sheppey saw us exit the FA Trophy. Once again there wasn't too much wrong with the performance, but that lack of ruthlessness in front of goal cost us yet again. If we weren't creating chances there would be genuine cause for concern, but we had enough opportunities to have won comfortably. Let's hope we can kick-start the campaign tonight. Incidentally, I think players on both sides deserve credit for the fitness levels they showed. Playing in those temperatures can't have been easy, it was hard enough watching in that pitiless heat. Remember we're back here at the OHOB on Saturday to face Three Bridges.

MANAGER’S NOTES
Evening all, and welcome to tonight's cup tie against South Park.
Another frustrating result at the weekend in the FA Trophy against Sheppey means we are still seeking our first win since the away victory at Pagham on the opening day of the season which seems some time ago now.
I had to reassure the lads after the game on Saturday that they need to stick together and believe in what we are doing. We are playing some really decent football and creating plenty of chances. Our fortune in front of goal will turn and we will end up on the right end of a convincing result soon.
Tonight will allow opportunity to get some minutes into some of the lads who have sat patiently waiting for their opportunity and it’s up to them now to prove their worth and, given Saturday's huge local derby against top of the league Three Bridges is coming up, I’ll be keen to see how the boys perform.
We have got a busy few weeks coming up and we are looking forward to putting last weekend behind us and getting this crucial win under our belt!
Thanks again for all your support as ever - keep it going.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League Velocity Cup First Round tie against South Park (Reigate).
The original fixture was scheduled for three weeks ago but had to be rearranged because our visitors were in an FA Cup replay against Leatherhead after drawing the original match at home.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our supporters, the Sparks’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as tonight’s referee Ciaran Fidler and his assistants Daniel Jeffery and Ryan Calver. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
If tonight’s match finishes in a draw at the end of 90 minutes, it will go straight to penalties. The winners will be at home in the Second Round against Merstham which is due to be played before the end of the month.
Tonight’s two teams haven’t faced each other since an FA Cup Preliminary Round match in August 2018 which Wasps won 1-0 at home. South Park (then without the addition of Reigate in their name) were moved across from the South East Division into South Central for the 2018/19 season so we haven’t met in the League since.
Tom Copes’ Sparks had a good win on Saturday in the FA Trophy, coming from behind at half time to beat Erith & Belvedere 21 with goals from Deondre Date and Brendan Murphy-McVey. They currently sit in seventh spot in the Isthmian South Central League after four matches, winning two and losing two.
Saturday was a real frustration for Drew Cooney and his Wasps team bowing out of the FA Trophy to Sheppey United to a well taken
goal by the prolific Danny Leonard. We created enough chances, hit the post, hit the bar and shot narrowly wide but again despite a decent performance we weren’t clinical enough in the final third. Spirits still remain high and I feel we just need that break in front of goal to get us going.
Tonight will be another tough test but I know Drew and the lads are up for it.
We are at home again on Saturday when we host our near neighbours, Three Bridges in the league. We have no match the following Saturday but are here again on Saturday 30th September against Ashford United.
Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
I’m having a look at the programmes for a couple of games played in the past in the second week of September. First up is the programme for Horsham YMCA v East Grinstead on Saturday 12 September 2009 in the FA Cup. We were then in the top division of the Sussex County League while Horsham YMCA were in the Isthmian League. We had beaten Feltham and Cove in earlier rounds while Horsham YMCA had beaten Pagham. The programme is a busy one with lots to read but what particularly caught my eye when I read it again a few days ago is that the Horsham YMCA team included both Steve Sargent and our 2023 manager Drew Cooney – while Drew’s brother Blair was one of our subs.
The programme’s league tables show that neither team was doing especially well in their league matches. We were third from bottom in the County League with just one win and 5 defeats, while Horsham YMCA were fourth from bottom in the Isthmian South division with 1 win, 2 draws and 3 defeats. There was only a brief mention of Horsham YMCA’s most recent league match which had been away to the league leaders Folkestone Invicta. The writer wasn’t over impressed with their opponents but thought Horsham YMCA had only themselves to blame for not waking up until Folkestone were 2-0 up.
Our FA Cup match saw only one goal, which unfortunately didn’t come our way. But we had an opportunity to correct things as our reserve teams were due to meet in the Suburban League on the following Wednesday evening –when we scored the only goal in the match from Elvis Lynn.
We move on a couple of years for a local derby match - East Grinstead v Three Bridges on Saturday 13 September 2011 in the top division of the County League. It’s John Paul Collier appearing on the front cover.
Chairman Richard Tramontin’s notes tell us that there have been changes in our squadleaving it to manager Tony Beckingham to explain in more detail who has come in and
who has left. Perhaps a surprise that Liam Baitup was leaving – he always seemed able to score goals.
Games against Three Bridges – whether in the County League or more recently in the Isthmian League – always have an edge to them Three Bridges hadn’t started the 2011/12 season too well though a couple of recent wins were perhaps a sign of improvement – and any team including Lee Carney was likely to win more then they lost. The programme’s league table shows us that Three Bridges had won two but lost three league games and were a couple of places below us – we had played one game more and had won three games and lost three games. For the first 45 minutes it was very much ourselves who dominated things and after some 15 minutes John Paul Collier’s shot was deflected in. But the second half was dominated by Three Bridges and they ended up winning 2-1 with a goal in stoppage time. If you’ve had your memory jogged by this article then I’d be happyto hearfrom you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

League Latest
It was only two weeks since Beckenham Town last welcomed Three Bridges, the visitors leaving with a 2-0 win, and the Crawley side did even better in the FA Trophy, continuing their fine start to the season with a 5-1 win. It looked like it was going to be a good day when Anthony Adesite put Becks ahead after just two minutes, but Kevin Riviera levelled just before the break and the second half was one way traffic. Riviera added a second, Camron Lawson made it three with nineteen minutes remaining, and in the last ten minutes a Brannon O’Neill spot kick and a goal from Noel Leighton ended a fine afternoon for Bridges. Broadbridge Heath welcome Cray Valley PM, the two sides having met in the league only two weeks ago. That match ended in a 2-2 draw, but the Millers would have been confident having scored ten goals in their two subsequent matches, and added two more to win this one, Kyrell Lisbie scoring for the sixth match in succession and Freddie Parker scoring his fourth of the campaign. A late red card for Millers keeper Sam Freeman came too late to make a difference.
Burgess Hill Town, buoyed by victory over Bognor Regis Town in the Cup last weekend, were quickly ahead against Hythe Town last weekend’s goalscoring hero Lewis Finney doing it again. The Cannons were level nine minutes before half time, Jack Steventon with the equaliser, and ahead just after the break through Lex Allen. Two minutes before time Aaron Barnes made it 3-1 and secured an away win- and their third win in their last three matches against Hill.
Horndean had scored three goals in each of their cup ties prior to the visit of Ascot United, and added two more, but that didn’t help much as the Yellas got three. The three United goals all arrived in the first 15 minutes, Brendan Matthews with the first and third - that’s nine for the season for the striker - and Sam BelloBalogun with the one in the middle. Dean reduced the arrears nine minutes before the break through Zack Willett, got another back with 20 minutes to go through Tommy Scutt, but that was that.
Merstham and Sutton Common Rovers spent last season in a relegation battle against each other in Pitching In Isthmian South Central, both eventually surviving after a play off. Now in different divisions, the two sides met again at Moatside and Rovers coasted through, goals from Courtney Swaby, Antonio Simeone and Gabriel Odunaike after the break delivering a 3-0 win.
Phoenix Sports and Metropolitan Police had both had starts to the campaign to forget, and both were desperate for the victory that might kick start their season. The visitors eventually got that victory, but only by winning a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.
