WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
Good afternoon and welcome to our final game of the season, and hello to everyone here with VCD Athletic.
Our 4-3 win there in December was probably our best away result of the season; Ultimately it was our form here at fortress East Court / OHOB that has secured our place in the league for another season. Let's not forget that among the vanquished here are champions Chatham and third-placed Whitehawk. Anyway, it's a fine achievement by all concerned. Personally, the fact that we've had a pretty settled squad for most of the season has made a massive difference compared to recent years. The days when we used 60+ players in a season seem to have ended, which can be no bad thing. I'll end by amplifying the thoughts of both Richard and Drew elsewhere in the programme. For the club to keep moving forward we need more people on board at committee level. If you feel you can contribute in any way, please get in touch.
Have a great summer, see you all again in August.

MANAGER’S NOTES
A warm welcome for our last game of the season against VCD Athletic. It’s been another up and down week, having gone away to Beckenham and earned a well-deserved point followed by a disappointing away performance at Chichester on Tuesday – four days that pretty much sums up our league form this year.
At Beckenham I thought the lads were terrific. We had a game plan and as most in this league know if you manage to keep Danny Waldren and Louis Theophanous quiet you’re in with half a chance of getting something. On a narrow pitch the game became quite stretched with both teams having chances. Ryan Green scored first and we took a deserved lead but in the second half the officials had other plans for us, firstly the harsh sending off for Lewis for two bookings. This meant we played nearly 30 minutes with ten men. Then in the 80th minute the Beckenham dugout was as shocked as me when the ref pointed to the spot for an apparent handball against Tommy Cooney! We then had a stone wall penalty for a foul on Ben Aubrey late on which would of allowed us to take all three points. The aim was to take Saturday’s momentum into Tuesday but after conceding on 13 minutes when we gave the ball back to Chichester from our own throw deep in their half I knew it was going to be another one of those away performances. Again, we had chances but we didn’t deserve to win the game. I’m not usually one to comment on officials, but I genuinely think the levels this season have been very disappointing. The management team put so much work into setting the team up and to get some of the decisions we have had is not right. More needs to be done.
All in all it’s been a successful season. I know our first aim is to stay in this league which is what we have done and that’s great. But, for me personally, we need to be aiming higher than that. Ian, Sarg and I and the rest of the management team can’t settle for staying in the league. This season has taught me that it’s going to take time on and off the pitch to get both the set-up right so we can achieve our true potential. We have without doubt some great people involved in the football club, but we need to have the same ambition to kick on.
For me personally it has been a huge learning curve. I won’t lie, there has been weeks where I would personally rather pull my boots back on and play. I still train regularly with the lads and they know I can drop in as and when required but I owe it to myself,
Ian, Sarg and the committee to give this a real go. We know already where we will change things, what kind of players we want to work with and who are a good fit next season. We will make these changes in the summer, and I am also really excited about some of the under-23s knocking at the door for regular first team football. Ollie Cash, Harvey Burgess and Alfie Kent-Mock all have massive futures. The Under-23s have had another successful season and are producing some excellent talent and for a club like ours the youth set-up is critical to allow the first team to function effectively. Special thanks must go to Grant and and Jay in the under-18s - this club wouldn’t be where it is without them.
Lastly a special thanks must go to our Chairman Richard Tramontin, he probably hates me at times but again I wouldn’t be in this privileged position without his support. Also, a huge thanks to the rest of the match day team who tirelessly work behind the scenes. Stuart, Robbo, Gillian etc I really do appreciate you all.
I hope everyone enjoys today’s last game and hopefully we can finish on a high, enjoy the summer break and then be back here in July for the scheduled friendly against Crawley Town.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Good afternoon and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for today’s final Isthmian League South East Division match of this 2022/23 season against VCD Athletic. We extend a warm welcome to the Vickers management, players, officials and supporters as well as to this afternoon’s match referee Joshua Langley-Fineing and his assistants Harvey Ransome and Martyn Milligan. We trust you all enjoy your short stay and our hospitality. A massive thank you to the Grin Army and all our fans for your enthusiastic and loyal support throughout the season. The players, management team and all the committee really appreciate it and your commitment come rain or shine, during the highs and lows and we are really pleased that we can go into this afternoon’s match already knowing that we will be in this league again next season.
It’s been very tight at both ends of the table for some time, but congratulations to Chatham Town who became champions last Saturday in their first season back and commiserations to Corinthian and Faversham Town who were both confirmed as relegated on Easter Monday. It’s still undecided for the play off places at either end of the table – Ramsgate and Whitehawk are assured to be in the promotion play offs but Beckenham Town (67 points) and Cray Valley PM (65), could be replaced by Sheppey United and / or Hythe Town who are both on 64 points. At the other end, VCD Athletic on 37 points are one point ahead of Haywards Heath Town and both are chasing Burgess Hill Town on 38 points with Lancing ahead of them on 40 points. The Vickers need a win here today to have a chance of avoiding the inter-step play offs while a win or a draw for Wasps could see us move above Three Bridges who are playing at relegated Faversham Town.
On a very sad note, we mourn the passing on Monday of Sussex FA Chairman Matt Major at the age of 65. Matt had battled courageously against oesophageal cancer over the past year, and passed on peacefully, surrounded by his family. A few of us at the club knew Matt well, particularly from his time as Chairman and owner at Shoreham FC.
Congratulations to Andy Willis and Grant Hearn’s
Under 23s for reaching the final of the Sussex Cup after beating Hastings United 4-1 in the semi-final. Unfortunately, despite taking the lead twice in the Final against Horsham YMCA at Lancing on Thursday, they eventually lost 3-2. We have three further matches here next week and one the following Tuesday.
The Under 18s host Woking on Monday and the U23s play their final league match of the season here against Chatham Town on Thursday. We host a Charity match next Saturday (ko 2pm) in memory of former Wasps player, Rhys Wood, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in October 2021.
The final match here this season will be on Tuesday 2nd May when our Under 18s host Chipstead.
Thanks for everyone’s support throughout the season. On a closing note: - we always welcome any volunteers so please speak to me or one of my colleagues if you would like to get involved in any way.
Whatever the outcome of this afternoon’s match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home and a great summer.

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
CONTINUED ON PAGE 11
As we begin to reach the end of the 2022/23 season I have a couple of games played in the past on, give or take a day, today’s date. As usual the programme that was produced for the matches has been a great help to me.
We start with an away match in division 2 of the Sussex County League – Broadbridge Heath v East Grinstead on 22 April 2000. The match was played in the middle of the athletics track used by the Horsham Athletics Club, which I have visited many times with the East Grinstead Athletics teams.
The programme features a bear on the front cover – the Bears being Broadbridge Heath’s nickname. I haven’t been able to track down why it is their nickname. If you know why please let me know.
The programme is a pretty good one with lots to read and all the important statistics. A good welcome to us and good of them to tell everyone that we had won our most recent game 5-0 with a hat-trick by Steve Banks.
The season had been badly hit by the weather and Broadbridge Heath reserves would play their next game later in the day after our game – our game might have started at 2pm? The programme doesn’t tell us.
The programme’s league table shows that we still have six games to play, while this will be Broadbridge Heath’s last league match. And this would be their first game for three weeks –their last game being a 6-1 win with the programme’s match report telling us that 17year-old Lee Carney had scored five goals in his first County League match.
He was later to play for Three Bridges and he seemed to save his very best for matches against us ! He was due to be playing against us in this 2000 match.
We had played at East Court in November. James Hylton had put us ahead in the first few minutes, with Will Tidey equalising just before half time. And early in the second half Richard Latham scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Broadbridge Heath. But here in April we managed to bring a point home, Stuart Hardy scoring our goal in a 1-1 draw.

Follow the Bear...
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10
Moving on a few years we have East Grinstead v Pagham on Saturday 23 April 2011 in division one of the County League.
This was the Saturday of the Easter weekend and the programme also covers our home game two days later on Easter Monday v Crawley Down.
Richard Tramontin’s notes tell us that “Like ourselves, Pagham are battling to finish in second or third spot behind Crawley Down” and further we will be looking to “avenge a 3-1 defeat in Pagham in August”.
Manager Tony Beckingham is pleased to be back at home after 4 away matches on the bounce all of them being a long way away –Arundel, Sidley, Eastbourne and Wick – with the Arundel match having to be abandoned for reasons I never became aware of.
We have a report for the match at Wick when prolific scorer George Gaskin gave them the lead in the very first minute which we managed to equalise in the very last minute with a mishit shot from Peter Cooper.
The league table showed us in seventh place but with 6 games to play while Pagham were fourth with three games to play with Crawley Down uncatchable at the top and on their way to the Isthmian League.
But we were now to lose our way a bit when another prolific goal scorer Scott Murfin helped himself to both of Pagham’s goals with us unable to put the ball into the back of the their net.
If you have had your memories jogged by this piece then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

VCD ATHLETIC
VCD IN THE ISTHMIAN LEAGUE
The first season in 2008/09 was a success with an eighth-place finish, but the club were left stunned when the Ryman League deemed ground issues warranted demotion, and despite an appeal to the Football Association the club went back to the Kent League. Manager Paul Foley resigned to join Chatham Town, taking virtually the whole team with him, and the club appointed former reserve team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement. Under his leadership VCD achieved third place in his first season and the season after the team was also challenging for honours. But for a disappointing end to the campaign, we certainly would have given Herne Bay a closer run to their title.
Once again third place was attained but this time we had the added bonus of winning the Kent League Cup, beating Corinthian 2-0 in the final. We also lifted a second trophy with a 3-2 victory over league champions Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield which gave the club a pre-season boost.
Midway through season 2012/2013 Bennett left the club due to outside pressures, and in his place the club secured the services of Tony Russell, previously manager of Erith Town FC, who joined with his assistant Ray Powell.
With most of the players leaving with the previous manager the club was in disarray, but a side was quickly formed by the new management and a magnificent recordbreaking run of 17 victories and two draws in the last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once more gain promotion to the Ryman Football League Division 1 North.
Starting as favourites for relegation the club had a stunning run, winning the first 15 games and heading the table for all but a couple of weeks throughout the campaign, and on the last day of the season, sitting in second place, the Vickers defeated Romford FC 6-0 while leaders Witham Town could only draw their last game which saw us secure the title by a point, taking the club to the Premier Division, its highest ever level in the pyramid. The club struggled for a lot of the season,
spending most of the time in the relegation places but winning the last six games saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th position to maintain our place in the division.
Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned, joining Cray Wanderers FC in Division One and taking his entire side with him but the club acted quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon as new First Team Manager.
Keith came with a wealth of experience having taken neighbours Thamesmead Town from the Kent League to the Ryman League Premier Division but, with no players at the club and only a few weeks to the start of the 2015/2016 season, he was up against it from the beginning in trying to assemble a side to compete at the higher level.
He worked tirelessly and brought in some excellent players, but despite some good performances we were unable to find the consistency needed in the Premier Division and were relegated back to Division 1 (North).
A league reorganization saw the Vickers switch to the South-East Division and they go into today’s game knowing that they will probably need three points to avoid the relegation end of season play-off.
