POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND MORE ETHICS TRAINING FOR SENATE STAFF (1.5 hours) Required for new staff; open to all

Presented by: Hawai‘i State Ethics Commission Staff All state employees (whether paid or unpaid), must abide by the State Ethics Code, a set of laws designed to ensure integrity in state government. The Hawaii State Ethics Commission is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Code, and in this workshop, Commission staff will provide important basic information that all state employees should know and understand. This workshop will include the following topics: Gifts and Gifts Reporting, Fair Treatment, Confidential Information, Conflicts of Interests, State Contracts, Post-Employment Restrictions. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT ‘ŌLELO HAWAI’I: HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE AND PRONUNCIATION (10 weeks, 1.0 hour) Open to all

Presented by: Keahi Renaud, Senator Maile Shimabukuro’s office Communication is key when it comes to connecting with communities, and what better way to connect with others than by learning a language together! During this 10-week ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language) course, attendees will learn the basics of the language and alphabet and common expressions, their correct pronunciation, and when to use them. While the course focuses on beginning speakers, those fluent in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i are highly encouraged to be co-kumu (teachers) and offer additional insights. Welina mai! (Welcome!) HAWAI‘I STATE ARCHIVES TOUR (1.5 hours) Open to all; Recommended for staff who did not attend previously

Presented by: State Archivist Adam Jansen The Hawai‘i State Archives is a division within the Department of Accounting and General Services, whose mission is to ensure open government by preserving and making accessible the historic and permanent records of the state government. Established in 1905 by statute, the Archives holds records from the monarchy to the current legislative session, along with papers of individuals and organizations, photographs, maps, artifacts, and rare books. With collections of over 12,000 cubic feet of material, including more than 500 collections of private papers, a 38,000 volume library, over 500,000 photographs and over 1,000 artifacts, the State Archives has served the public for more than 100 years and will continue to do so for generations to come. State Archivist Adam Jansen will highlight materials from our state’s documentary heritage, rare book collection, and museum objects held in the public trust at the Hawai‘i State Archives. UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF THROUGH TRUE COLORS (1.5 hours) Open to all

Presented by: Lexer Chou, Student Life/Student Services Coordinator, Leeward Community College True Colors is about finding your "true self" and learning the same about others. By using color (orange, gold, green, and blue) to identify characteristics that make up our personality, we can gain a better sense of who we are and why we do what we do. Each color represents a different primary personality type, and all four lay the foundation of True Colors’ fun and insightful personality identification system. True Colors helps us understand group dynamics and how different personality types best interact with each other to create a positive team environment. This workshop comes with a personality assessment and booklet and will feature engaging group activities that allow you to discover your “true colors.”

Presented by: Anne Marie Smoke, Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR), Hawai‘i State Judiciary The Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR) is an office within the Hawai‘i State Judiciary, dedicated to making alternative dispute resolution processes broadly available to Hawai‘i citizens and state and county government through research, training, education programs, forums, and publications.

It is recommended that participants take this course first before any other CADR workshop. This popular workshop has been updated with new content. Participants are introduced to basic skills and strategies for navigating and managing conflict. This workshop focuses on effective communication and provides a safe and fun virtual classroom for participants to learn and practice verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Emphasis is on active listening to better understand positions and interests, the concept of “two truths,” and productive ways to have difficult conversations. Participants delve into a strength-based and positive approach to feedback designed to hone in on what is working rather than what is not. Engaging exercises and peer interaction provides participants an opportunity to practice rapport-building feedback techniques to determine what motivates people and guide them to realize their fullest potential. Presented by: Anne Marie Smoke, CADR, Hawai‘i State Judiciary Meetings are often seen as a waste of valuable time and energy. All too often, meetings are set without clear, manageable objectives and participants leave wondering what was accomplished and what happens next. This workshop gives participants tools to make meetings meaningful, effective, and inclusive. Part I emphasizes the importance of establishing clear objectives, setting a manageable agenda, and staying focused. In Part II, participants are introduced to a variety of processes that will help them meet their objectives. Time will also be dedicated to practicing skills for managing difficult meetings. This interactive workshop is useful for anybody who attends, plans, and/or coordinates meetings.
