Premier rugby is finely poised ahead of the final round of regular season fixtures, with finals places still to be confirmed across the grades. Round nine saw Wests 2nd Grade host the Canberra Royals at Jamison Enclosed. The Lions had a great win over the Blue Baggers, 27-17, in front of a rapturous Old Boys crowd. It was a cracking day out for the Lions in general with 3rd and 4th grade both notching big wins. 3’s put 50 on Royals to win and the 4’s only just failed to match it, the final score there 48-0. Royals Colts however set the tone for the 1st grade side, handing the Lions a 29-5 loss. Queanbeyan have had their struggles at the top grade, but the depth is certainly there after their results in the lower grades.
4
The Whites had a clean sweep from 2nd to 4th grade against the Uni-Norths Owls, starting with a 22-7 win in 4’s. It was a tighter affair in 3rd grade where the Whites on 13-10 and in 2’s, Queanbeyan held on for a 22-14 victory. Finally, it was a mixed bag for both Tuggeranong and Gungahlin at Viking Park. The day started with a dominant win for Vikings 4th grade, 31-14. Eagles 3rd grade certainly repaid the favour in full, simply battering the Vikings 101-0. Perhaps the best game of the day came in Colts where the Vikings were pipped at the post by the visitors, 29-28 although Tuggies got their revenge in 2nd grade, upsetting the Eagles, 17-14.

The final round of the John I Dent Cup will see multiple pivotal matches played across the capital region, and the Gungahlin Eagles/Canberra Royals game is no exception. The Eagles have their backs against the wall in this matchup as a loss could potentially knock them out of the top four and see their season end, as Wests have a chance to steal that number four spot in a win against the Queanbeyan Whites. Royals have created enough distance on the ladder to maintain that number three spot, but just because they have this advantage doesn’t mean they won’t play to their full strength. The last time these two teams faced off the Royals came away with it in a close game 19-10, with penalties being the defining factor that won them the game. Pedro Rolando was the man who won the Royals the game and sure enough will most likely be the key for them this weekend.
8
Both teams started the competition looking sloppy but have finally found their rhythm and have started to gel towards the end of the season. The Royals look to be the favourite to win on their home ground, but the Eagles may surprise everyone being the underdogs. If the Eagles manage to control their penalties and play to their strengths, they have a good chance of pushing through to the semi-finals. With this hanging in the balance, it will definitely be one that will go down as a great match. Kick-off is at 3:05 pm at Phillip Oval.

It’s a battle for the Minor Premiership this weekend in the tenth and final round of the 2020 John I Dent Cup, with the second placed Uni-North Owls taking on the first placed Tuggeranong Vikings at ANU North Oval, this Saturday at 3:05pm. The Owls were able to bounce back to their winning ways after a dominant performance against the Whites last week and will be looking to continue that momentum into this game and snatch the Minor Premiership. The Owls will be looking for another strong performance this week by tighthead prop Max Bode, who stared in last week’s game against the Whites, scoring a double and setting up a try in the Owls 40-22 win.
The Vikings will also look to clinch the Minor Premiership with a victory against the Owls and will be bringing forward an extraordinarily strong side that took down the Eagles last week with a 30-12 win and demolished the Wests in round 8 71-29. The Owls will need to look out for fullback Jed Englert, who has been one of the Vikings strongest players the last couple rounds, scoring a double last week against the Eagles. The last time these two teams faced off was in round five where the Vikings won a tight fought game against the Owls 2625.

The final round of the John I Dent Cup is here and for the Wests Lions, it is a do or die clash away to the Queanbeyan Whites.
With the top four sides going through to the finals series next week, not only do Wests need a win but they also need other results to go their way.
It has been a horror run of form Wests of late, losing their last four matches. The last win for the Lions came in round five coincidentally over the team they face this Saturday.
Their current form leaves a lot to be desired for the side, and they will be desperate to recapture the early season form that saw them knock off the competitions two biggest names in successive weeks.
For Queanbeyan, it is a matter of pride. The Whites have only gotten up once this season, with that result coming back in round two against Gungahlin.
But they need to be careful. They are coming up against a Queanbeyan side with nothing to lose, a side that will be wanting to end their disappointing season on a positive note at home.
Despite going down to the Uni-North Owls by 18 points last week, the Whites nearly pulled off a stunning upset win over the Royals the week before, with that game ending in a late draw.
Kick off for this round 10 clash is 3:05pm at Campese Oval.

Premier 15’s rugby in the capital continues to shine with a clear top three developing ahead of finals. Royals rubberstamped their credentials once again in round nine with a whopping 75-0 victory over Wests. The Blue Baggers Brumbies Super W stars shone in the shutout performance at Weetangra Oval. Grace Kemp scored four tries in the win, backed up by a pair of braces from Ainslie Scrivener and Darcy Read. Royals bitter rivals Tuggeranong had more work to do to overcome the Goulburn Dirty Reds but Vikings eventually pulled away from the visitors to stay in touch with the top two. Zali Waihape-Andrews and Emma Masi have been stars for the ViQueens in 2020, their tries a good sign for Tuggeranong heading into finals.

Uni-Norths will be hoping to maintain their unblemished record all the way to back to back premierships. Meanwhile, the Women’s 10s competition looks to be finishing with a flourish with no clear favourite developing over the season so far. Uni-Norths got back in the winners’ circle thanks to their 17-0 victory away to the Bungendore Mudchicks. Gungahlin had established some dominance in 2020 but that came grinding to a halt last week. The Eagles were beaten comfortably by ADFA, 34-17.
