Premier Rugby was wonderful in round 6 with spring just around the corner, the grades putting on some epic games around the capital. Queanbeyan Whites welcomed Gungahlin Eagles to Campese Oval, and there were some great performances from the visiting side, apart from the 4’s and colts. White’s 2’s had a good performance, but it wasn’t enough for them to secure the win with the Eagles beating them 19 -26. The 3’s were blown out by 54 points but in the 4’s, Whites turned it around and beat the eagles with a classy performance 32-17, while the Colts won over the Eagles 27- 12. At Phillip Oval, Royals had some good performances against the Vikings. and not so very good ones as the 2’s had a

4

very tight performance that went down to the wire by them losing by 2 points 14 -16, while the 3’s blew Vikings out of Phillip oval with a 48 to 5 win. The 4’s just couldn’t close out the matchup and went down 19 -24 and the Colts went down also to the Vikings 17 -31. Wests out at Jamison Oval had a great days rugby, on Ladies day. 2’s had a convincing win over the Uni-Norths Owls beating them 26 -14, and the 3’s matchup was very tight but in the end Wests won by 5 points. In the 4’s Wests went down to the owls 35 -19. Gungahlin looks to aim up against Wests rugby at RMC this week while on the other side of the capital Whites welcome Vikings to Campese Oval. The Owls are looking at another tough matchup against Royals at ANU North Oval.

The Gungahlin Eagles will take on the Western Districts Lions at Portsea Oval in round seven of the John I Dent Cup, which looks to be another exciting match-up for 2020. If round one’s meeting is anything to judge by, another try fest could be on the cards, as the Eagles managed to snatch a thrilling 43-36 victory at Jamison Oval, courtesy of a brace from number 8 Tamati Ioane. Gungahlin however have largely struggled since and would go on to lose their next four fixtures. Although, they managed to get back in the winner’s circle in last week’s match-up with Queanbeyan. But Marco Caputo’s men are in dire need of another win if they are to crack the top four and play finals football. They currently sit in fifth position, trailing the in form Royals by six points. Wests, in contrast, would go on to lose round two but would then follow up with three wins on the trot, which included the scalp of the heavily fancied Tuggeranong Vikings.

However, they unluckily fell short last week against the Owls, who managed a last second one-point victory thanks to a Jordan Thompson penalty goal. Despite the devasting loss, Adam Butt should be encouraged by his young side’s performances in 2020, who have become the real dark horse of the competition. They currently sit in third position and a win on Saturday could see them move up to second, if results go in their favour. All eyes will be on former Wallabies and Brumbies player Matt Giteau for the Eagles, who has made headlines a few weeks ago with his comeback to club rugby. And keep a strong eye on young fullback Declan Meredith for Wests, who continues to impress week in week out. As always you can catch all the action live from 3:05pm Saturday on BarTV Sports. The Queanbeyan Whites are hosting the Tuggeranong Vikings at Campese Oval, in what is a do-or-die clash for the side as their hopes for finals hang on by a thread. The Whites have struggled to find any sort of form, winning only one of their six games so far this season. Their last win came back in round two of the John I Dent Cup, as they beat the Gungahlin Eagles by 15 points. It is a different story for the Vikings, as they currently sit in second place with four wins from six. Their most recent loss came last week at the hands of the Royals, going down to a late try and it’s a result that the Vikings will be keen to avenge.

28

The last meeting between these two sides came back in round one in what was a disastrous opening round for Queanbeyan. They were absolutely dominated by the Vikings in a 45-7 loss, with their only points coming as a consolation right at the end. This will perhaps be the toughest encounter for the Whites, as they look to get their season going and push for finals. With perhaps the toughest schedule in the comp for the run home, a win here would be a massive boost for the Whites and would send a warning to the rest of the competition. Kick-off for this encounter is this Saturday, 3:05pm at Campese Oval and you can catch all the action live thanks to BarTV Sports.
