It’s finals time in the 2020 John I Dent Cup, and it’s the table topping Tuggeranong Vikings hosting the high flying Gungahlin Eagles, in what is shaping up to be an exciting encounter. Both sides are coming into this encounter in red hot form, both having won four of their last five matches. Vikings have had the rub of the green over Eagles this year having won on both occasions the side has met, a two point win in round three and an 18-point win in round nine. While Vikings are coming off the back of a dominant 37-point win over the Owls, Eagles are coming into this semi-final with a head full of steam, coming off the back of a shocking 62-point drubbing of defending premiers, Royals. For Gungahlin, their Brumbies stars could not have come back at a better

6

time. Mack Hansen, Issak Fines, and Tom Ross all made their returns to clubland last week and made an instant impact in their thrashing of Royals. Add in the experience of Matt Giteau, and Gungahlin have a side that on their day, could beat anyone. Of course, Vikings will have their own stars with Isaac Henry, Michael Oakman-Hunt, and Tom Hooper standouts for the side. The Vikings forward pack is arguably the strongest in the competition, meaning it will be a busy day for the Gungahlin defence. Whoever you decide to support, this game is sure to be an enthralling encounter. Kick-off is 3:30 at Viking Park, and you can catch all the action live thanks to BarTV Sports.

Saturdays semi-final blockbuster between the Tuggeranong Vikings and Gungahlin Eagles will see the new kid on the block, Isaac Henry, go head to head with veteran Matt Giteau. 21-year-old Henry made the move to Canberra from Queensland in 2020 having joined the Brumbies system and has been highly impressive in his debut season for the Vikings. The inside centre has totalled 95 points so far in 2020 and only trails Western District’s Declan Meredith on the total point tally. He also bagged himself a brace of tries last weekend against Uni-Norths in the Vikings commanding 49-12 win, seeing them finish top of the table at the end of the regular season. And while his semi-final opponent Giteau may be in his 38th year, his experience doesn’t count for nothing. The 103-game capped Wallaby and twotime Super Rugby title winner has been a welcomed addition to Marco Caputo’s men.

Since his arrival in round six, the Eagles have won four of their last five fixtures, seeing them finish in the top four after a slow start to the season. He has also been amongst the points scorers with 39 points in his five matches, which included getting amongst the try scorers in the Eagles 62 points to nil thrashing of Royals in round 10. Giteau will therefore be looking to bring all his experience and leadership into the match-up with the young Henry, who has only lost two matches for the 2020 season with Vikings. It would cap off the perfect return to Canberra for Giteau if he can lead the Eagles into the final, who have not won a title since 2003. Henry will also be looking to bring his form into the finals and get one up over the experienced Giteau, with it being a perfect opportunity for the youngster to push his case further for a Brumbies jumper in 2021.

The moment everyone has been waiting last time that these two teams met the for is finally here, the semi-finals of the Royals stole the win 16-10 in what was a close and competitive game. John I Dent Cup. The Uni-North Owls and the Canberra Royals have both fought for their place in the semi-finals and will now duel to see who will advance to the final stage.

This game may come down to a battle of the backs, with Owls Byron Hollingworth and Royals Ben Johnson potentially set to butt heads and of course Pedro Rolando always there as a threat.

The Owls may be the favourites to come out on top, sitting in the top two of the Knowing that it’s all come to this and that competition for most of the season and it’s a must-win-game I doubt that either side will hold back, set to come out the proving to be a solid team. gates running and determined to win it However, after an admittedly shaky all. start to the season the Royals may prove that they are still premier calibre The first taste of finals footy is set to take having started to take shape as a team place at ANU North Oval with kick-off at towards the end of the competition and 3pm Saturday. cementing their spot in the top three. Though there will be plenty of star power on show when Royals travel to ANU North Oval to take on the Uni-Norths Owls, the battle of the two halfbacks may be most crucial to the final result. The tantalising tussle of Will Miller and Royals junior Tom Cusack, the Brumbies duo, may take the headlines, but Lachlan Creighton and Pedro Rolando make their sides tick, and both will have a huge role to play. Creighton typifies everything the Owls have become over the past few seasons. Competitive, uncompromising, ambitious, and tough. In his first season leading the Owls, he has steered them brilliantly, on and off the field. His influence is more subtle than Rolando’s. Creighton is brilliant and identifying opportunity, knowing when to up the tempo, or drop it down. He doesn’t kick goals or score a lot of points. His impact is in leadership, direction, all the little things that make a team row together as a collective.

Rolando is more of a sun, than a guiding star. Everything revolves around the Argentinian maestro. Rolando has kicked Royals to multiple Premierships in his time as a Blue Bagger, but that’s simply the surface. Yes, when it comes down to knockout rugby, having a guy who’s kicking 80%+ is a huge asset, but to pigeonhole Rolando as ‘KickRobot 5000’ would not be fair. Recovering from an ACL tear last season, Rolando hasn’t been able to attack with ball in hand as often, but perhaps he’s been saving himself for finals. If Rolando can snipe, find space down edges, the likes of Ben Johnston and Lincoln Smith become that much more lethal. With Brumbies playmaker, Bayley Kuenzle in tow as well, he’ll have a second kicking option to take some of the pressure off in exiting.

A fascinating battle of these Petite And, he’s a gamer. Creighton will not General’s, can’t wait to see who comes care if Royals show up with their medals out on top. bouncing off their chests. He will believe Owls are good enough to win and will breathe that confidence into the rest of the team.

17

It’s straight knockout, two teams advancing across the grades, premier rugby finishing with a crescendo in 2020. Gungahlin Eagles finished top of the heap in 2nd grade, earning the right to host Royals for their semi-final matchup. Eagles made a statement in round 10, defeating the Blug Baggers on their home patch 31-26 so it’s likely to be a cracking contest. Vikings were closer to the chasing pack but will fancy their chances of making the big dance against a Wests side who have been dangerous all season long. Vikings last meeting with the Lions ended 21-19 to Tuggies, so there’s not much to separate the teams. Queanbeyan continue their streak of finals footy at Colts level, and the defending champions will take on 2019 Grand Finalists Gungahlin in the semifinals.

Vikings will welcome their closest rivals Royals to Viking Park for the other playin game. Tuggeranong finished level on points with Queanbeyan but finished 2nd on points difference. Vikings got the better of the matchup in 2020, winning both meetings this season. Gungahlin are undefeated in 3rd Grade this season but face a potential banana skin test against Queanbeyan in the semi-finals. Whites snuck in ahead of Uni-Norths to claim 4th place but will be no easy outs against the Eagles, who are firm favourites to win it all. Royals and Wests could barely be separated in 2020, Royals earning hosting rights by just two points, and both teams have had dominant wins over the other. Finally, in 4th grade Queanbeyan Whites minor premiership means they’ll host the Uni-Norths Owls in semi-final 1. Wests will be no pushovers either in this competition, though they’ll have to get through the Tuggeranong Vikings first before thinking of Grand Finals.

A battle for spots in this year’s ACT Women Premier 15s grand final will take place this weekend, when the top ranked Owls will host the fourth placed Goulburn, while the second placed Royals and the third place Vikings will do battle for the other spot in the Grand Final at Viking Park at 1:15pm. The first game is the undefeated Owls taking on Goulburn who have only won two games this season. The Owls will definitely be the favourites going into this game, but Goulburn aren’t to be ruled out though with the side being able to keep the Royals to 8-0 score line in round five. The last time these two teams played was in round 8 where the Owls won 22-0. In the other game we have the Royals taking on the Vikings for the other spot in the Grand Final, the Royals come into the game winning six of the eight games they played this season, while the Viking come into the game having won four out of eight. The last time these two teams played was in round six this season where the Royals

28

demolished the Vikings 34-0, but that doesn’t mean anything when it comes to finals games, where even the lowest ranked teams can pull off amazing performances. The ACT Women’s 10s Premiership is up for grabs this weekend, when the ADFA Snr Women’s take on the Owls this Saturday at 10:30am at Simon Poidevin Rugby Park. ADFA will be the favourites coming into this game having not lost a single game this season and made it to the final by demolishing the Mudchicks 41-7, but the Owls aren’t to be ruled out, especially coming off a semi final win where they beat the second placed Eagles 20-17. Both sides will be relying on their star players to step up on this special occasion, with ADFA hoping star players, Brittany Foster, SarahJane Brown and Matilda Law will bring the same level of high performance that saw them easily get past the Mudchicks. While the Owls will be hoping for a strong performance by Amy Daniel, specifically hoping her kicking game can rise to the same level as Law’s.

Country rugby has delivered in a huge way in 2020, and after a dramatic season and an even crazier final act, Taralga Tigers took home the South Coast Monaro 2nd Division title.

That stunning blow turned the tide in favour of the Tigers, and in extra-time Taralga took control of the game, scoring the winning try and holding possession for most of the remaining minutes, sealing the victory.

Taralga were the prohibitive favourites heading into the clash with Jindabyne but the Bushpigs were one of the few sides in the competition who had beaten the Tigers.

Meanwhile, in the Monaro Cup, Goulburn will have a chance to do the double in both 1st and 2nd grade thanks to their semi-final wins.

Still, it was Taralga who stamped their authority on the tussle early, scoring two quick tries including a breakaway score from star flyhalf Joel Croker.

In 1st grade, the Dirty Reds have been dominant all season, and their latest outing against RMC, a 54-22 drubbing will see them enter the final as favourites.

Up 10-0 at the break, Taralga looked to be cruising to the crown, but Jindabyne didn’t read the script like that, and the Bushpigs came out firing in the second period.

Meeting them in the big dance will be the Hall Bushrangers who belted ADFA away from home to upset the seeding, booking a date against the Dirty Reds.

Three cracking long range classics have the Bushpigs the lead in the second half, 19-16 and they looked on for a stunning upset.

ADFA 2nd grade had more luck in their semifinal against Hall, sneaking home 19-17. Goulburn had already booked their spot in the final.

Taralga were not done though, and a Croker penalty with five minutes to go levelled things up, 19-19.
