Tuggeranong Vikings v Gungahlin Eagles If progression is anything to go on, the 2018 Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup Preliminary Final should be a belter. The Tuggeranong Vikings enter Saturday’s clash with the Gungahlin Eagles as heavy favourites but there’s a quiet confidence building at the Nest. The Eagles are in many ways the form side of the competition, and though they were beaten in their previous two cracks at the Vikings, the improvement from Gungahlin suggests that the result of the Grand-Final players is no foregone conclusion. Having been the standout team in 2018, Tuggeranong must be wondering how they ended up here. Such is the format however, they came up against an equal in Royals and find themselves taking the tough route to a Premiership. Conversely, the Eagles could probably deal with a third-place finish although now with the scent of Gold in their beaks, the Eagles will still be bitterly disappointed if their finals flight ends at the preliminary stage. Vikings will probably feel they should have won last week as well, which makes it doubly hard to back-up on Saturday. For large parts of that game, they controlled things and

made easy yards. Time and again Royals were able to keep them out from close range, Vikings finishing letting them down at the wrong time. On the flip-side, when Vikings executed properly and attacked the line with purpose, they were undefendable. For Eagles, had the game finished on the 60-minute mark it would be a case of job well done, let’s move on. That’s not how it works though, and the Eagles will be forced to ponder a sluggish finish to their round against the UniNorths Owls. With twenty to go, they were 24-0 in front. Had they lost from there, which they of course so nearly did, it would have been an unmitigated disaster. Now, if you’re an Eagles fan, the response would be, but we didn’t. Fair, and the resolve to get over the line is heartening for the Eagles, but against the Vikings they will have to go hard for the eighty. The pressure is all on the Vikings. They are the favourites, they have the superior squad and have dominated the competition all season long. That leaves the door open for the Eagles to have a crack, knowing whatever happens, 2018 has been an excellent year for their club. Anything less than a win would be tragic for Tuggeranong. Expect nothing but 80 minutes of havoc at Viking Park.

SECOND GRADE PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW

Tuggeranong Vikings v Royals It’s boom or bust for Tuggeranong Vikings and Canberra Royals as they meet in the Second Grade Preliminary Final at Viking Park with no second chances this time for the team that comes out on the wrong side of the ledger. And it’s anyone’s guess as to just who that might following an absorbing season of Premier Division Second Grade rugby. There was heartbreak for the Vikings in the Major Semi-Final last weekend, pipped by the narrowest of margins by table-topping Queanbeyan Whites in what was a hugely entertaining last-four match-up. The Whites eked home 28-27 to book a Grand Final place and consign the Vikings to this Preliminary Final clash with a Canberra Royals side who appear to be peaking at just the right time. Royals looked in very fine form indeed as they blitzed the Uni-Norths Owls to keep their season alive, the result never really looking in doubt as the team that finished the season having downed ladder leader Queanbeyan Whites in Round 16, and put forty points on Wests a week later, continued to keep their try-scoring knack intact with a 47-5 crushing of the Owls’ hopes.

For those looking for clues as to which side may come out on top in this crucial battle, the three league meetings between them seems to offer no conclusive evidence, as Vikings tipped the scales in their direction early in the campaign, only for Royals to rediscover their form when the round-robin phase began to reach the pointy end of the journey. Vikings thrashed Royals 55-26 at Viking Park in the opening match of the season, way back on Saturday 7 April and were big winners once again when the teams clashed at the same venue in Round 8 in late May. Royals had the last laugh however, a 26-5 success at Phillip Enclosed Oval in Round 14, played on Saturday 7 June, perhaps giving them the psychological advantage heading into this encounter. Queanbeyan Whites await the winners of this match, the Whites having been the form side for most of the season in this Grade, but to reach that stage will require a monumental effort from both teams. A tight, tense and, quite probably, high-scoring match is in store with the victors marching on. First Division First Division ADFA v Canberra Royals ADFA and Canberra Royals will do battle for a place in the Grand Final of the first Division First Grade competition following their contrasting fortunes across their semifinals matches at Viking Park last weekend. ADFA, who finished top of the table at the end of the regular season, were beaten by Tuggeranong Vikings to force them into this Elimination tie with Royals. The Vikings were just too good for their opponents on the day, winning comfortably, 37-22, to advance to the Grand Final. Twenty-four hours later Royals ensured their season would remain alive after downing Goulburn 38-22 in the Minor Semi-Final, ending Goulburn’s season in the process. Both results were, perhaps, something of a surprise given the finishing positions of each time at the end of the fifteen rounds of matches played, but no-one present would argue that the victors deserved their accolades. With the Vikings awaiting the winners, what does this season from suggest the likely outcome of the match will be? Well, if the one and only meeting between the two teams is any form guide, then all indications are that the Defence Force will be lining up in the big match next weekend. That’s because they drubbed Royals 55-10 at Dowsett Oval back in Round 10. Royals will be determined to make sure there is no repeat.

There’s sure to be a right-rollicking atmosphere in the First Division Second Grade Preliminary Final at Viking Park as the Tuggeranong Vikings will hope that home ground advantage counts in their favour when Queanbeyan Whites provide the opposition to see who will march on to meet RMC in next week’s decider. The Vikings, who topped the table at the end of the regular season, would have been bitterly disappointed not to have the weekend off after they were defeated by RMC 29-17 at this very venue a week ago. RMC were too strong across the park for the Vikings and deserved their success, meaning the Vikings are forced to get to the Grand Final the hard way. Standing in their way are a Queanbeyan Whites team who savaged ADFA in their minor semi-final clash a day after the Vikings demise. The Whites blitzed the Defence Force Academy side, winning 62-14 in a one-sided match-up. The Vikings had the wood on the Whites in their only meeting this season, that took place way back in Round 4 on Saturday 28 April when the Tuggeranong side emerged winners from their trip to David Campese Field with a 29-7 victory. Preliminary Final action is notoriously difficult to call though with form usually thrown out of the window and, with that in mind, this game could go either way.

SOUTH COAST MONARO PREVIEW

The race for the top four will go down to the wire in the South Coast Monaro competition as two teams battle for the remaining spot in the semi-finals. Taralga, Crookwell and Jindabyne are sure of their status leaving Bungendore and Yass as the teams left in the fight for the top four with a final round of intriguing fixtures providing the answer as to who will join that trio in the Finals.

All eyes will likely be on Mick Sherd Oval come 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon as Bungendore welcome Yass, the quintessential knockout match as the winner will make finals with the loser missing out. The Mudchooks currently occupy fourth spot on the ladder, and the allimportant finals position, one-point ahead of the Rams who are fifth. Therefore, a Mudchooks win or draw will ensure them of finals football for 2018. A Yass win would make everything even more interesting as they would leapfrog their immediate opponents into fourth place, likely setting up a semi-final meeting with Jindabyne. Jindabyne, currently third on 60 points themselves, welcome Crookwell to John Connors Oval. A win for the Dogs, which is the outcome predicted by many, could

mean that the Bushpigs would stay in third, whereas an upset might see them move into second place. In conclusion, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much to play for. The Bushpigs go into their match with Crookwell having claimed a bonus-point win themselves over Batemans Bay at Hanging Rock last week, a comfortable 57-19 win setting them up for this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s encounter. Yass meanwhile were too good for Gungahlin, downing the Eagles 42-12, whilst Bungendore were the only one of the top five to lose, beaten by the Taralga Tigers by 31-27, the resulting confirming the Tigers top spot on the ladder. Crookwell kept up their momentum in second place behind the Tigers with a 4619 bonus-point win over Boorowa and will provide a stern test of the finals credentials of Jindabyne in the final round. Other matches set for the final weekend of regular season action in the South Coast Monaro Division sees Batemans Bay travelling to Braidwood, the Tigers meeting Boorowa at Boorowa Showground and ADFA playing Gungahlin at Dowsett Oval.

Queanbeyan Whites v Gungahlin Eagles

Momentum is key in any sport and the Gungahlin Eagles enter their Colts Preliminary Final showdown with Queanbeyan Whites on the crest of a five-match winning run looking to extend that to half-a-dozen and spring a surprise on the team that finished one place above them on the final table. Wins over Wests, Queanbeyan, Easts and Uni-Norths Owls (twice) have the Eagles flying high. Last weekend’s comfortable 39-12 win over the Owls, following on from a final round 5919 hammering of the same opposition, has the young Eagles in a positive frame of mind as they look to takedown a Whites team who have shown they also have the requisite level of silk and steel to make it through to the big dance on Saturday 18 August. The Whites meanwhile will have ideas of their own of course, having been narrowly defeated by Tuggeranong Vikings in the Major Semi-Final at Viking Park last weekend. The Vikings, as the form guide may well have suggested beforehand, had a little too much in terms of attacking firepower for the Whites, claiming the honours and a Grand Final place with a 22-15 success. The Whites will respect, but not fear their opponents, with both teams having tasted the

winner’s circle in 2018 in the trio of matches that they have played together in 2018. The Whites edged that series with two wins to the Eagles one, but it was the Eagles who came out on top in the most recent of those games, a 33-8 win at Nicholls Enclosed Oval in Round 14. That was revenge, of sorts, for the large Whites win at the same venue in Round 8, the Queanbeyan side emerging victorious form their trip North with a 31-17 margin of victory. When you also take into consideration the narrowness of the result in the opening match of the campaign, a 12-10 Whites win at David Campese Field in Round 1 with tries from Kane Kilmister and Patrick Byrne, allied to a conversion from Brad Winchester proving the difference, then the outcome of this match is anyone’s guess. What is certain is that come the final whistle one set of players will be joyous whilst the other set will be left to reflect on what might have been. That’s the fine line that Preliminary Final football offers. Canberra Royals advanced to the GrandFinal of the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup last week thanks to a hard-fought 26-20 win over the Tuggeranong Vikings at Viking Park. The Vikings may have been top of the table going into the Semi-Final stage but it’s Royals who reign as Premiers. Despite Vikings having the line-share of possession and more clean-cut chances, it was Royals who held their nerve on the day, scoring four beautiful tries, two in each half with Will Morrison, Andy Muirhead, Sione Mau and Ben Johnston finding the line. Royals lead 14-3 at the break, having defended for most of the half but Vikings’ inability to turn pressure into points was a theme of the day, most glaringly in the opening forty minutes. Royals were almost the opposite, showing ruthless efficiency when on the attack. Vikings went very close to snatching victory in the late stages after Len Ikitau forced his way over, but it was Royals day and Vikings were left to ponder missed opportunities.

For sixty minutes, the Gungahlin Eagles were perfect against the Uni-Norths Owls. Playing against the wind in the first-half, the Eagles managed to open a 19-0 gap over the Owls thanks to tries from Jamie Kotz, Ray Dobson and late replacement Luke Duffey. The Owls shot into life with twenty to play and looked like the team that had finished third in the regular season. Ben Love, a brilliant young number-eight, got the first of the Owls tries, followed by a cheeky sniping effort from Sam Irwin. A brilliant lineout move saw Brumbies veteran Ben Alexander score his first Owls try of the year with two minutes to play and the Owls had a chance at an incredible come from behind victory. The Eagles regrouped however, and in the dwindling embers of the Minor Semi-Final, cheered on by a vociferous crew in the temporary nest on Viking Park hill, the Eagles controlled possession, won a penalty and it was on Josh Gillard to boot the ball through the sticks, signalling the end of the game. It wasn’t to be for the Owls, their endeavour and guile won the hearts of many in 2018. For the Eagles, their finals flight continues Saturday.

WOMENS PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW

Uni-Norths Owls v Canberra Royals

The Preliminary Final in the Women’s Competition is upon us and for Uni-Norths Owls and Canberra Royals this really is the last chance they will have to keep their season alive. The winners will move onto the Grand Final next Saturday, and a date with the all-conquering Tuggeranong Viqueens, whilst the defeated side will begin preparations for Mad Monday knowing that, for another year at least, their dreams of glory and silverware will be dashed. Looking at form the Uni-Norths Owls will be the clear favourites to move onto a re-match with the team that sent them into this knockout encounter, having beaten Royals convincingly in their most recent of meetings. The 51-0 thrashing handed out by the Owls to Royals in Round 14 at Phillip Enclosed Oval stands out in the memory banks for all involved but that was a far cry from their first showdown. Back in Round 6, a solitary score from Royals fullback Kasey Dragisic earned the visitors a 5-0 win over the Owls at ANU North Oval in a titanic battle that suggested both teams would push the Viqueens during the season. That was though, arguably, the high-point of the season for the Royals who forfeited the return match in Round 9, Owls awarded a 20-0 win.

The two semi-finals played at Viking Park last week were a reminder of where the strength of the competition lays at present. The Viqueens were, once more, in great form as they shackled the Owls up front and prevented them from dictating the pace, allowing their free-scoring backs to do the damage when in possession. The result was a convincing 38-5 win. Meanwhile, Royals proved way too strong for an out-gunned Gungahlin Eagles twenty-four hours later, running away with the match and claiming a highly convincing 64-5 success. Both Royals and Owls possess pace and skill in the backline, but the experience and nous of the Uni-Norths pack may just prove to be the difference in this one and is arguably the reason that they start this Preliminary Final battle as favourites to stay alive for another week. What is for sure is that the Women’s game, which is thriving in Canberra and enjoying a huge surge in popularity in 2018, will be showcased once more and the talent on display will leave it all out on the field as they strive to make Grand Final day.
