PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade

Round 9, the Indigenous Round of the Griffin Legal John I Dent had it all; tight games, blowouts, tries, drama all encompassed by a tremendous celebration of Indigenous culture. The Hahn Superdry Match of the Round, Owls against Eagles, began with a welcome to country. The players on the pitch were donning Indigenous themed socks, as were all players in first grade across the competition, as the crowd observed the welcome to country. What followed was dogged, tense affair which saw Gungahlin have two players sent off and a fellow three sent to the bin during the game. That ill-discipline stole the headlines, but surrounding the controversy, a great game of rugby broke out. A late flurry from UniNorths in the first half meant they had control of the game for large chunks of the 80, but Gungahlin gave as good as they got too. Given the numerical advantage Owls had in the second stanza, they would have hoped to have been more comfortable in the dying minutes. Such was the heart shown by the remaining Eagles on the park, the teams were separated by just a point when the final whistle went. The final score, 25-24. Vikings kept their dominant form going

against the Queanbeyan Whites last week. Brendon Taueki’s season just keeps getting better for Vikings, the fullback adding another two tries to his growing tally. Vikings certainly didn’t have it all their own way however, Whites pushing the table-toppers all the way to the final knell. With the score poised at 22-15, Whites had possession in Viking territory, the home crowd crying out for their charges to get over the line. The Visitors held firm, won a penalty at the ruck and that was the game, Vikings holding on for the hard-fought victory. It was Easts v Wests in the final game of the round, and it was a rout for Easts in the end. Competitive through the first forty, Wests showed the type of resolve which means they are always a tough out if the results haven’t gone their way yet. For Easts, it was somewhat of a showcase of their progress. In dreary conditions the Easts back three were marvellous, breaking from deep time and again, particularly the speedster George Morseu. A won sided result, Easts will be chuffed with a 42-13 win on the road while Wests will be liking their wounds as they travel to the Champions Royals for a 2017 Grand-Final replay.

FIRST DIVISION

The road to fame in rugby starts at grass root level and leads to Premier division, but it doesn’t just happen like that. Grades 5 through 2nd are filled with the lifeblood of the sport, whether the players be young and fresh faced or getting on and trying to stay in touch with their athletic side. In the First Division First Grade comp this week, Queanbeyan were able to get up against RMC/ Easts, 38-22. A great spectacle, with fourth grade players watching on as their contest was rescheduled for Monday evening, the Whites were able to come away with a big bonus-point win. Hall were able to come away from their city visit with a win. Joel Malouf got one over on his former Wests teammates, leading from the front and scoring a try. Dylan Holgate, Andrew McCoola, Shaun Griffiths and Connor O’Donoghue also got over and O’Donoghue was able to convert three of the scores. Wests got one back in second grade, winning 46-31. Young welcomed the Tuggeranong Vikings and were able to get a well-deserved win. The final score was 33-20, fullback Jacob Chandler scoring four tries for the home side who were down 10-7 at the break. Royals dismantled Cooma in their game, the

final score 73-7. David Ulavalu got over for four tries while teammate Jason Swain was able to bag a brace as well in the comprehensive victory for the Royals in third grade. Royals currently sit second on the table behind Hall who are six points clear. A more competitive contest in fourth grade but the result was the same, Royals winning 38-5. In the final matchup of the round, the Gungahlin Eagles travelled to Goulbourn for a two-grade slugfest. In first grade, Goulbourn were dominant over the Eagles winning 38-14. Ben Todkill scored a hat-trick while lock Monteagu Hicks was able to get over for two tries of his own. Mikael Webber added four conversions to the Goulbourn tally, the veteran recently reached an incredible milestone for the club. 2000 points. The versatile back has been playing for Goulburn since 2001, appearing in a couple of games in the reserve grade during the 2001 and 2002 season before cementing his spot in the first-grade line-up. There’s no doubt that Webber is a versatile player, fitting comfortably into a role in the centres, dictating play from five-eight and even packing down in the backrow becoming what the club has called a ‘later in life forward’.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division

The South Coast Monaro Second Division was at it’s usual, exciting best as five fixtures turned out some incredible results. Jindabyne, Boorowa, Yass, Bungendore and Crookwell celebrated some big wins, with the competition really heating up as we approach the mid-point of the season.

John Connors Oval.

The headline fixture saw Crookwell play Taralga in a rematch of last year’s grandfinal. It was the first time the two sides had met since that final where the Dog’s swept Taralga aside, and with both sides appearing to be on a collision course to meet in the finals again, this Round nine bust-up was billed as a mid-season dressrehearsal for the decider in September.

Gungahlin weren’t able to keep up their fine form against Bungendore, going down 33-19 away from home. That win leaves Bungendore just outside the top-four, just one win away from Yass, which they’ll look to get today against Batemans Bay.

The performance was not as dominant for Crookwell, but the result was the same. Unbeaten this season to date, the home side outlasted Taralga 17-10, giving the visitors a much deserved and crucial bonus-point. Crookwell meet the Gungahlin Eagles today while Taralga face Jindabyne at

16

Jindabyne had themselves a day in Round nine, beating ADFA 114 – 0. Though the score was merely 35-0 at the break, Jindabyne didn’t let up and racked up a score more likely seen at a 20 overs game in cricket.

Batemans Bay suffered an agonising loss against Boorowa in round nine, the final score 15-17. Boorowa play Braidwood this afternoon, who are also coming off a loss. That game saw Yass dominate away from home, looking very much a top four side through nine rounds. Jordan Fulivai grabbed a double in the Yass win, the final score, 32-17.

Women’s Preview

Tayla Stanford, a Vi-Queen. A Brumby, a Wallaroo and the scorer of 10 tries in one game. The Tuggeranong Women’s side beat ADFA 115-0 last Saturday in yet another devastating display, but Stanford stole the headlines. 10 tries in a match is just unheard of. A total which most would see as a successful tally for a season, Stanfords performance has been circulating the rugby community in Canberra. Playing in a team which featured two Wallaroos in the front row, Peta Cox and Violeta Tupoula as well as Brumbies Women’s stars Michaela Leonard and Ash Kara, Stanford was the star of the show.

By oral accounts filtering through the zeitgeist, Stanford was repeatedly handed the ball from varying distances, but just couldn’t be stopped. The final result will be one ADFA would like to forget, they’ll have a chance to rectify this result against the Eagles today. The Gungahlin Women were in action against the Owls on the weekend, welcomed by Uni-Norths for Ladies Day. Owls were comfortable winner, 29-5 though the game was very competitive. Uni-Norths come up against Royals this weekend in a match which could be important come finals time.
