PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade WILD WEEKEND OF UPSETS IN ROUND 11
First grade form guides were thrown out the window in Round 11 as all three underdogs won over favoured opposition. Wests, UniNorths and the Gungahlin Eagles all won in stunning fashion to upset the apple cart and turn over three of the top four. Perhaps the least shocking of the three results came in the Hahn Superdry Match of the Round between Vikings and the improving Owls, though the games circumstances turned this one into a thriller. Uni had previously come agonisingly close to beating the table toppers, earning a draw in Round 3 and were able to go one better turning over Tuggeranong 31-28 away from home. In that third-round clash, Vikings scored in the final minute of the game to force the tie and incredibly, the Vikings had the same opportunity in the rematch. After jumping out to a 31-7 lead, Uni-Norths were forced into a corner in the closing stages with the Vikings storming back after injury forced a pitch change. With just three points separating the sides, the Vikings won penalty after penalty just five metres from the Owls line, straight in front of the posts to boot, off the back of a dominant
scrum. Time and again the Vikings turned down the game-tying three pointer, looking for the comeback win. Five minutes after the 80-minute limit had been reached, the Vikings threw one more attack at the Owls scrum, only this time, Uni held firm forcing Vikings to go wide. The Uni defence held firm, forced Vikings into touch and the game was over. A famous 31-28 win for the Owls. Wests may have turned their season around after a convincing win over Queanbeyan at Campese field. A systematic dismantling over the Whites leaves Wests with their second win of the season and a renewed confidence going into the second stanza of the 2018 season. The final score 31-10. The final match in Round 3 saw the Gungahlin Eagles produce their best performance of the year to turn over the 2017 Champions Royals. On a day which was as cold as it was wet, the Nicholls Oval cauldron came to life as club legends filled the sidelines giving their clubmates on the park the strength to hold on for a great win for the Eagles. The home-side scored three hard earned tries and somehow survived countless attempts at their line by the visitors in the second half, conceding no tries in a 20-12 victory.

FIRST DIVISION
As teams begin jostling for their final positions on the ladder, the shocking results from the Premier Division last week may inspire some of the middle ranking teams to make a dash for a top four spot with 11 points being the difference between first and sixth. This week is exactly that, as the grade is split in half and teams are given a chance to make a difference. In top spot, Hall will be travelling to Viking Park to take on fifth spot; Tuggeranong, after both teams had strong wins last week with neither team conceding a point. This game will change the top four regardless of the outcome. In second, Royals will be hosting ADFA who are tracking sixth and only three points behind Goulburn and Tuggeranong in fourth and fifth. Royals were rocked last week with a draw against Young and ADFA took a hit against Queanbeyan leaving both teams hungry for a win. Queanbeyan will be at home defending
themselves against a very threatening Goulburn side as they battle it out for third on the ladder. With Queanbeyan at home and threatened with a two-place drop, they will come out fighting. Easts/RMC will be hosting Gungahlin and harbouring some hope to take another win after a six-round drought. Last week, Gungahlin had a solid win against Wests and Easts/RMC received a blow from Goulburn, leaving this week’s game an uphill battle for the home side. Further south, Cooma will be hosting Wests as the closely ranked teams look to move up the ladder. Cooma had a strong start to the season and they are still a big threat to Wests. In a similar position, Young will be hosting Uni-Norths after the home side pulled a draw last week against the Royals. UniNorths also had a few wins a couple weeks ago and could seriously turn up the heat today.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division
The South Coast Monaro second division continued this weekend with results largely following the form guide as Yass, Taralga and the firm favourites for finals Crookwell all posting Round 10 victories.
Indeed the Crookwell dogs stayed par for the course managing to outlast a spirited Gungahlin Eagles side on the day when the Eagles were celebrating their Heritage round. As the Eagles first grade side were producing an inspired performance to win in unlikely fashion, on the adjacent field the Eagles fifth grade side, aptly named the ‘Bald Eagles’ were hanging on bravely against the league leaders. It wasn’t to be for the home side with the visiting Crookwell eventually pulling away despite superb Eagles scores by Luke Shaw and Joe Loeschnauer, Sam Richards adding a conversion and a penalty to the Eagles tally. That result leaves Crookwell sitting pretty although Taralga are fresh at their heals after another win in Round 10.
16
It was the brothers Croker who were the chief architects of the Taralga Tigers latest triumph. One of three sets of siblings in the Tigers squad for 2018, two tries from Thomas and four conversions from Joel saw the Croker name in lights as their side won handsomely away to Jindabyne. James Marmont added the third Taralga try before Sam Conlon put the icing on the cake and the bonus-point to the table tally keeping the pace with Crookwell at the top. The final score 28-10 to the Tigers. The other game saw third-placed Yass win comfortably at home to ADFA. A well contested game ended with Yass scoring 20 unanswered points conceding none in the entire game to jump Jindabyne into third place on the ladder. Round 11 sees Batemans Bay welcome ADFA, Boorowa batting Bungendore, Jindabyne at home to the Eagles, Taralga taking on Braidwood and a top-three clash between Yass and the Crookwell Dogs.
Women’s Preview
EAGLES WOMEN WIN CRUCIAL CLASH WITH ADFA In the only match played in the Women’s division in Round 11, the Gungahlin Eagles Women produced some great running rugby in dour conditions to beat ADFA Women 61-19. The wind bringing a chill to Nicholls enclosed oval, the sides to the field on the Saturday morning with the Eagles celebrating their heritage round, a carnival atmosphere developing despite the conditions. Eagles certainly set the tone for their club mates, delighting supporters with their playing style and endeavour. Outside centre Courtney Smith was the star of the day scoring four tries for her team, with a few beauties amongst the set.
Brumbies board member Vikki Fischer took a break from her duties with the region’s pro side to score a well earned try. Nera Wright and Rhiannon Ford added another two tries to the tally before Rachele Brown, Aseri Laweloa and Maggie Downs completed the rout for the Eagles, the final score 61-19. The Eagles victory was extremely important with ADFA their closest rivals for that all-important final spot in the top four. Round 11 sees Gungahlin take on Vikings away from home and Royals welcoming ADFA to Phillips Enclosed Oval.
