PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade VIKINGS OUTLAST THE EAGLES IN ERINDALE THRILLER

Round 12 of the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup was, as ever, jam-packed full of drama as Wests rolled Easts, Queanbeyan conquered the Owls and the Vikings held on to scupper a spirited Eagles effort at Viking Park.

first period to Easts three. Brumbies academy prospect Byron Hollingworth-Dessent impressed with two long-range scores, James Verity-Amm was crucial to Easts effort, scoring and assisting on all of Easts first half tries.

A back and forth affair in Erindale saw the Vikings outscore the Eagle 5 tries to 2 though the scoreboard told a different story for the majority of the game. Indeed it was a tight affair even in the dying minutes with Vikings scoring in the 81st minute to put a gloss on the record.

Wests increased their lead in the second half with nine points from the boot and another try. Easts replied with two tries of their own to claim a bonus point from the tie, the final score of the game a beauty with Verity-Amm linking up with his Brumbies teammate Mees Erasmus. The final score in that game 51-36.

Plus500 Brumbies star Henry Speight, who requested to play for the Eagles, opened the scoring for his club with legend, Rocky Ilolahia and hooker Alex Small adding two more to the Eagles tally. The boots of Josh Gillard and Isaac Walker kept the score close.

In the final game, Queanbeyan Whites claimed a crucial win over the Uni-Norths Owls, an 8-point swing game at the top of the ladder. Whites jumped out to a 21-0 lead inside 20 minutes and were looking to kill off the contest when Owls flyhalf Tom Gilmore charged down a speculative kick and raced away to get the Owls back in the game.

However it wasn’t to be as veteran Michael Henry’s double as well as tries to Brendon Taueki, Richard Joyes and Brumbies centre Jordan Jackson-Hope clipped the Eagles wings and earned a hard-fought victory for the Vikings. Wests were able to get a massive win over Easts last weekend, both in terms of the stats sheet and their finals hopes. In a high scoring contest, Wests scored five tries in the

Owls peppered the Whites line for the rest of the first half but couldn’t breakthrough, though they did add a penalty goal just after the break. Whites replied with one of their own which cemented the win, though Uni did stage a late comeback scoring in the 78th minute. The Final score 24-17.

This was an absolute classic when this pair met earlier in the season with Eagles coming out on top in a Round 4 thriller, winning the match 36-31 at Gungahlin Enclosed. James Dargaville crossed for a double for the victorious Eagles, joined on the scoresheet by Rocky Ilohia, Isaac Walker and Luke Duffey whilst Richie Arnold powered over for a double for the defeated Wests. TP Lueru, Mitch Tye and Seb Lorraway made sure Wests went home with two points.

FIRST DIVISION

In Round 11 we will begin to see the First Division First Grade table starting to take shape for the finals run in just over a month. In saying that, the top four are only dividing by four points and could drastically change over these next few weeks. The pathway division will be sure to put on another great weekend of Rugby and it all starts in Jamison. Wests will be hosting Young as they continue to fight for their first win of the season. Young come into this round after defeating Uni-Norths by a comfortable 12-point buffer, so both teams will be working hard for a win. Later in the afternoon, Uni-Norths will be travelling to Goulburn to face this week’s number 2 on the ladder. Goulburn took a massive 36-0 win over Queanbeyan and are looking stronger every week. Queanbeyan are off to Cooma to take a win after the bitter game last week. Cooma are coming off their own thrilling 38-0 win which ranked as the second

highest score of the round, but have an intimidating opponent this week and could face a different situation. At time of print we were missing results from last week’s game between ADFA and Royals, but this week ADFA will be hosting Gungahlin who are right behind them on the ladder. Gungahlin are responsible for the highest score from round 10 with a 47-5 defeat of Easts/ RMC. Easts/RMC have another intimidating team to face this week as they’re hosted by the Vikings who will be looking to take back second place on the ladder. Despite their win against table toppers Hall, the Vikings are currently down in third place. Hall will be hosted by the Royals this week and both teams want an improvement on last week. Between a savage loss for Hall and a non-existent game for Royals, these two teams will either stretch or condense the top four.

15

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division

TARALGA TOP AS CROOKWELL FALL TO YASS Another big weekend of action looms large in the South Coast Monaro Second Division as the competition reaches Round 12 and, with only six matchdays remaining before Finals time, the race is certainly hotting up for top four positions and the all-important Finals placings. With the top two, Crookwell and Taralga scheduled for a summit meeting in Round 14, there’s no room for error before then. The top two face differing tests this weekend as Taralga, who lead the ladder on points differential, make the visit to Yass and a potentially tricky challenge against the third placed side on their own turf at Victoria Park. Yass ended Crookwell’s unbeaten run at that venue last week in sensational fashion, winning 33-32, in an absorbing encounter. The Dogs will aim to bounce back this weekend when they welcome Braidwood to Crookwell Memorial Oval and will hope

16

to see a similar score-line to their 36-5 win in Braidwood back in April. That would put the pressure back on Taralga with the July 14 meeting at Taralga Sports Field between the pair looming ever closer. Fourth placed Jindabyne welcome seventh placed Boorowa to John Connors Oval knowing that a victory may well see them leapfrog Yass should the Rams fall to Taralga. Jindabyne enjoyed a comfortable 40-3 win over the Eagles in Round 11 allowing them to ease seven points clear of Bungendore who are currently fifth. Bungendore kept up their challenge for a finals place with a one-point success over Boorowa at the Boorowa Showground. The 28-27 win allowed Bungendore to increase their advantage over their opponents on the ladder ahead of a visit to bottom of the table ADFA, a match they will be expecting to win, and win well having racked up a 90-5 success at Mick Sherd Oval. ADFA were downed 79-12 by Batemans Bay at Hanging Rock in their last outing to remain winless after nine matches.

Women’s Preview

VIQUEENS AIM TO CONTINUE TITLE MARCH The table-topping Tuggeranong Viqueens will be out to attempt to extend their lead at the top of the Women’s Division when they welcome the Gungahlin Eagles to Viking Park on Saturday afternoon. The Viqueens currently head the ladder by ten points from second placed Uni-Norths Owls who are inactive as they have the bye this weekend. That means, with a positive bonus-point win, the Viqueens could go fifteen-clear with games running out for the rest. Eagles will, no doubt, have plenty to say about that and will enter the match in fourth place, three points above ADFA and currently occupying the vital fourth finals spot. Viqueens have won 116-0 and 52-0 in their previous two matches this season and are in sublime attacking form. Having racked up 543 points in eight games, and conceded a miserly seventeen, they will be hot favourites. Last weekend saw the Tuggeranong

outfit rip apart ADFA at the same venue, a 73-0 win proving to be another bonuspoint success son their march towards top spot. Eagles meanwhile were left pointless from their match against Uni-Norths Owls, losing the match 53-0. They’ll need a colossal defensive effort this weekend if they are to inflict a major surprise. In the other match scheduled for Round 11, Royals will welcome ADFA to Phillip Enclosed Oval hoping to get back to winning ways. A combination of factors mean Royals last won in Round 7, but having enjoyed two bye weekends, it’s not as bad as it looks! Royals defeated ADFA in that Round 7 match, claiming a bonuspoint with a 56-17 success. Centre Carlotta Guerreschi was in fine form on that occasion, crossing for a treble, with Brumbies Women’s Skye Churchill adding a brace from scrum half and winger Darcy Read also crossing the whitewash. Royals will be looking for more again this weekend.

The Tuggeranong Vikings were made to work hard to secure their bonus point win against Queanbeyan Whites at David Campese Field in Round 4 back in late April, eventually seeing off their dogged opponents to win 29-10. The Vikings were restricted to two tries, scored by prop Sione Taula and left-wing JP Mynhardt. Brendon Taueki added nineteen points from the boot via two conversions and five penalties.
