PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade Winter is here, and it is hitting hard but the action in first grade is helping warm the soul of local rugby fans. The Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup has officially reached the business end. Easts, Wests and Queanbeyan felt the fear of thirteen in the latest round, falling to Royals, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong respectively. Those results saw Vikings and Royals open up a gap at the top of the table and the Eagles get their quest for a top four spot back on track. The Eagles had it much easier this time around against Wests, a last-gasp winner from James Dargaville was the difference way back in Round 4. The reverse fixture in Round 13 saw Wests dominate the opening exchanges, from the opening kick-off playing superb football in the chilly Jamison conditions.

Time and again they battered the Eagles line in the first ten minutes but couldn’t get the score.

A cracking contest between two-closely fought teams saw Queanbeyan Whites emerge 31-28 winners over Gungahlin Eagles in their Round 8 Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup match on Saturday 26 May. The Eagles outscored the Whites four tries to three, led by a hat-trick to number eight Rutikha Ilolahia, but the boot of Whites’ flyhalf Will Goddard was to prove the difference. The youngster potted four penalties and two conversions to add to a try for a personal matchwinning haul of 21 points.

“THE LAST TIME” Two intriguing battles took place as recently as Round 10 between Easts and Uni-Norths Owls with the team’s meeting at Griffith Oval on Saturday 9 June. The Owls took the spoils in Premier Division Second Grade with a bonus-point 29-17 win over their rivals, disappointing the majority of the crowd. Those same fans would have been happier with the outcome in Colts as Easts squeezed home by a narrow margin, winning a tight contest 15-13.

THE BIRTH OF RUGBY UNION IN CANBERRA The 1938 rugby season would sow the seeds of the John I Dent Cup that we know today with the new round-robin competition inaugurated a year after the formation of the Federal Capital Territory Rugby Union (FCTRU). It was the visit of the 1937 Springbok tourists that influenced the idea to form a union in the Federal Capital Territory with the South Africans scheduled to meet RMC as part of their trip. An outbreak of measles ensured that the match would never be played with the tourists instead demonstrating a range of skills to some interested onlookers.

formed. Regular matches took place throughout that momentous year but regular competition would have to wait for twelve months.

1938 was to be a massive year for the fledgling sport with the new league competition to begin and the fearsome New Zealand All Blacks scheduled to arrive at the end of the campaign, the first international team to play in the Capital. For the record, New Zealand saw off the Federal Capital Territory 57-5 at Manuka Oval, scoring thirteen tries including hat-tricks to Arthur Wesney and Alan Wright. Francis Hassett scored At an official dinner the Territory’s try with hosted by the Minister for GEL Dawson converting. without its early teething problems. Attendances at the trial matches that preceded the big kick-off, scheduled for Saturday 30 April, were poor and there was a real possibility that the four teams that were to form the set-up of the new league would struggle to field a side. But field teams they did, despite the allure of the Coast and Cricket which was still taking place when the new rugby competition began. Christopher wrote of a sense of relief that the Secretary of the premiership was able to report that the two matches had taken place. Indeed, post-match, ‘the four teams limes up in front of the platform where the Rugby Union Cup was on display to hear the Premier Minister, Mr Joe Lyons, deliver a short address.’ Competitive rugby in Canberra had arrived.

UGBY UNION FOOTBALL is a strictly amateur game, the spirit of which may best be expressed in the slogan: “The game for the game’s sake.” There are 15 players on each side. The mode of scoring is three points for a try; two for a goal from a try; three for a penalty goal; three for a goal from a mark, and four from a field goal. When the ball goes into touch, it is brought back into play by either a line-out or a scrum. If a player kicks the ball into touch on the full from any part of the field, except in his own 25 yards area, the line-out or scrum takes place opposite the point from which the ball is kicked. Otherwise, the line-out or scrum is held at the point where the ball crosses the touchline. A player is off-side if he touches the ball, either with hand or foot, without first having been BEHIND the player on his own side who kicked the ball. A forward pass is ruled when a player throws the ball in front of him. A knock-on is ruled when a player knocks the ball forward with his hand. A mark is not awarded unless the player claiming it has his feet on the ground. Federal Capital Press, Canberra.

THE FIRST MATCHES The Canberra Times, Monday 2 May 1938

EASTERN SUBURBS 0 UNIVERSITY 9 There was an early thrill when Donohue went over for a fine try. He missed the kick at goal and University led 3-0 after only two minutes. The Students had a territorial advantage but Easts began to work play back into Varsity’s half when Donohue was hurt. Varsity kept at it and McCue scored a glorious try, the result of a brilliant solo effort. The kick was missed and University led 6-0. Bird missed a penalty goal for Easts and Cordy failed with a long shot. The Students clung to their lead until half-time. In the second session, Freiberg tried a shot at a penalty goal, and then Whale made a nice run to capitalise a rush by Varsity and scored. Bird tried to Improve Easts’ position with two attempts at a field goal from long range. Both were powerful kicks from the fullback position (Harrison having gone into the forwards). University held the lead, Easts being badly wanting in condition at the end. McCue and Whale combined well for University behind the scrum, and Ryley (a Queenslander) was capable at fullback. McCosker, Jones, Allen and Watson worked hard in the forwards. Easts’ backs failed to get going and the wingers were starved. Haydon and Cornwall, playing together for the first time, lacked understanding, Moore tried hard to hold the backs together. Quodling, Adams, Hill, Bird and Zimmerman were tireless. Both sets of forwards must learn to get the ball cleanly and swiftly out to the backs and must hunt together all the time, particularly in stopping rushes.

RMC 24 NORTHS 11 Starting promptly to time, the big game was soon going at a fast rate. Hurley was getting the ball for Norths from the scrums but it rarely reached the wings. R.M.C. opened the scoring when a nice three-quarter movement from a scrum ended in young scoring. Murray converted. R.M.C. 5-0. Norths kept the game in the forwards while the backs, notably Smith, tackled determinedly. Then all R.M.C.’s backs handled in a fine rush which R. Dawson finished with a try. Murray missed the kick. R.M.C. 8-0. R.M.C.’s backs were now in top gear and Hassett gave a demonstration of correct wing play by scoring two tries, both of which Murray converted, and at half-time R.M.C. led by 180. Norths opened the second half by scoring. Makin landed a penalty goal. R.M.C. 18-3. The cadets hit back with the three-quarters at their best, Young finishing a nice run with a clever short pass to Godsall who fell over under the posts. Murray missed the kick and R.M.C. led 21-3. Norths made a rally and, with the ball coming to them from the scrums and rucks, Denehy worked the blindside for Smith to take a pass and go over near the posts. He converted. R.M.C. 21-8 Norths’ next try was due to honest forward work and Kirkwood deserved his try. Smith missed and R.M.C. led 21-11. The cadets scored the last try, just on time, after missing an easy try by bad handling right on the line. G. Dawson was the scorer and the final bell went. R.M.C. played as a team and while Bob Dawson was the mainspring, showing the hallmarks of a born footballer, individualism was not glaring. Every man played hard for the team and showed the great value of combination. Norths have a good winger in Makin. He would be a greater asset if he saw more of the ball. Smith, while a fine player, is not properly placed at five-eighth and would be more effective at outside centre. Denehy is courageous and resourceful halfback. Moore, Kirkwood and Pinkney are three good forwards, but the pack as a whole do not work hard enough together.

FIRST DIVISION: First Grade Four rounds left until the final series and it is still anyone’s game with a number of strong teams, all piling into the top five and only four points between first and fifth. After last week, Goulburn has taken top spot, but this week could see yet another shakeup as the season draws closer to its end.

ADFA will have to be on their toes as Cooma has everything to gain and they know they can put up a tremendous fight and will provide tough opposition.

There are two teams coming off losses and looking to get back into the mix in the shape of Hall and their visitors Wests. Wests only lost by a frustrating twopoint margin against Young, whereas Hall was taken down by the Royals who proceeded to take their spot on the ladder.

SOUTH COAST MONARO 2ND DIVISION CRUCIAL WIN FOR TARALGA AS CROOKWELL ROLL ON The battle for supremacy in the South Coast Monaro Second Division Competition has intensified even further after a weekend in which three of the top four claimed wins, with one dropping further off the title pace. Leaders, and competition favourites, Taralga and Crookwell both registered successes with Jindabyne moving into third as Yass were beaten at home. The latter news was hardly surprising as Yass were defeated 28-19 at Victoria Park by Taralga but, considering the Rams narrow win over Crookwell at the same venue a week before, for the Tigers to go away and claim a bonuspoint win, confidence must be soaring through

WOMEN’S PREVIEW TOP TWO TO BATTLE AT ANU NORTH The Tuggeranong Viqueens meet the Uni-Norths owls at ANU North Oval this weekend in what will be a crucial match-up to decide the destination of top spot in the Women’s Premier Division. The two teams have underlined their credentials as the best in the Division since the start of the competition and are sure to provide a hardfought contest. When the pair met earlier in the season at Viking Park, the home side, the Viqueens, emerged with the points from a real battle of attrition. A solitary try separated the two teams at the end of an armwrestle of a contest, the Viqueens winning 5-0. The Tuggeranong side enter the match having seen

their scheduled encounter with Gungahlin Eagles last weekend postponed. Owls meanwhile had the bye so both sides should be fresh for this pivotal contest. The other match set-down for this weekend will see third-placed Royals take on fourth-placed Gungahlin Eagles. Royals have 31 points from seven matches in 2018, nine behind Owls with a game in hand so could, theoretically, overtake UniNorths before the conclusion of the campaign. A positive result against the Eagles would be a step in the right direction. Royals certainly had the wood on the Eagles in Round 4 at Phillip, romping to a 5222 success and they built up for this match with a big

53-0 win over bottom-club ADFA at Phillip Enclosed last weekend. Royals scored nine tries in total with Kiahan Bellchambers and Skye Churchill each claiming a brace. Bree Harris, Agnes Faigafa, Ashlea Bishop. Kasey Dragisic and Darcy Read added to the tally with Bishop kicking four conversions. After this weekend only three more rounds remain in the regular season so points at this stage are a must for any season with aspirations of making finals. Whilst the top four are seemingly set fair, there is a chance that they could jostle for positional places in the next month, leading to what should be an intriguing pair of semi-finals.

Nineteen points from fullback Brendon Taueki helped Tuggeranong Vikings to a 34-21 win over the Royals at Viking Park in their Round 8 match-up in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup. Taueki crossed for two tries, as well as kicking three conversions and a penalty, to help the home side to a valuable bonuspoint win. The Royals claimed three converted tries in reply, through Richard Mariota, Matthew Cole and Liam Slater, but it wasn’t enough on the day.
