PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade HERITAGE ROUND – MOVING DAY IN FIRST GRADE
Two huge results in First Grade had massive implications for the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup as the competition celebrated its 80th anniversary. Uni-Norths dusting of Easts and The Eagles tight win over Queanbeyan sees the Owls go third, Whites down to fourth and Easts dropping out of the playoff spots. With just three rounds left, every result matters particularly below the top two teams, Royals and Vikings, who played out a nail-biter in Round 14. The match of the Round involved two of the foundation clubs, as Uni and Easts donned heritage jerseys in their crucial clash at ANU North Oval. The Owls hit top-gear, racking up 41 points on their way to a bonus-point win over their fellow 80-year vets. Uni welcome the Blue Baggers Royals to the Barn this weekend, a win over the champs would leave the Owls in great shape for a finals run. Owls rest in third place in the table, two points ahead of Queanbeyan who suffered a gut-wrenching loss to Gungahlin at Nicholls enclosed. It was a tit-for-tat affair in the smoky Eagles Nest, the fire burning on the sidelines echoing
the action on the park. Late in the day, Whites looked to have nabbed a crucial victory which would have all but guaranteed a top-four berth before the Eagles swooped in the dying moments to snatch victory. The Eagles have found some form late in the season and with a bye coming in Round 15, the Gungahlin side will gear up for two winnable tests against Easts and Uni to end the year, a playoff spot now in their sights. For Queanbeyan, they’ll have a chance to get back on track as they welcome Easts in Round 15. The final match of the Round saw the top-two tussle and this time it was Royals who got the upper hand. Typically close and predicably tense, the evenly-matched sides traded scores throughout. Royals maestro Pedro Rolando would end up striking the telling blow in the 60th minute to put Royals on top, though the home side had to hold on for the win in the closing exchanges. Despite the win, Royals remain three points behind the Tuggeranong table-toppers, A prelimfinal matchup is seemingly set in stone. The other wrinkle in the clash was of course the Bob Hitchcock shield, which Royals retained. Their match with Queanbeyan will act as the Shield’s final, that game coming in Round 16.

Royals edged a thriller in the previous meeting between these two clubs in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup winning the Round 6 match 26-24 at Phillip Enclosed Oval. Flanker Luke Kimber and wing Liam Slater scored two of the Royals tries with scrumhalf Pedro Rolando adding the third, as part of a sixteen-point haul that included a conversion and three penalties. The owls battled to the end and were close to claiming a win, but the home team held on.

THE LAST TIME Queanbeyan Whites were in scintillating form in the Second Grade match played at Griffith Oval back in Round 6, crossing for seven tries in their bonus-point 48-0 win, and enjoying a shut-out of Easts in the process. Wings Anthony Bozzato and Jeremy Lawrence raced across for a pair of tries apiece whilst Josh White, Toni Fifita and Thomas Ruediger also scored. It was much closer in Costs as Easts claimed a narrow 6-5 win in a close-fought battle.

Photo: Glenn Dawson This week in the First Division First Grade, a few teams that are lower on the ladder have their chance to take on one of the top 6 competitors and cause havoc in the finals weeks which are now less than a month away. ADFA have made up a few games and have shot to the top of the table and have a solid lead on the competition. ADFA’s slightly different schedule is likely the cause for this surprise take-over and that includes their round 13 game which was played against Goulburn earlier in the week. Goulburn is still in the top four but that could change once the rest of the field catches up. This Saturday, however, will first see Queanbeyan hosting Young as they both battle for succession. If today is a repeat of their game earlier in the season, then Queanbeyan may have a chance at reaching top four before next week.
Next, Tuggeranong will be hosting Wests at Viking Park as they try to hold on to second place after being demoted by ADFA. Wests will be battling hard to take another step up the ladder before the end of the season. Uni-Norths will be hosting the Royals this weekend after taking on Easts/RMC last weekend also at home. Royals will be giving it their all with three points between them and the top four. Hall will be hosting Gungahlin as they do their best to hold their top four position with a chance to go to the finals still in their grasp. Gungahlin will also be working hard trying to reclaim 6th in case something out of the ordinary happens in the coming weeks. Finally, Cooma will be hosting Easts/RMC in sunny conditions as they too look to finish the season strong.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division
The top two in the South Coast Monaro Division meet at Taralga Sports Field this weekend when the Tigers welcome the Crookwell Dogs for their much-anticipated summit meeting. Crookwell currently hold a six-point buffer over their rivals, but have played a match more, with the Tigers eyeing off a win that would put them in the box-seat to claim the number one position.
Both sides sat out the action last week, Taralga having been awarded double-points for their win over ADFA earlier in the season, a situation which is repeated for Jindabyne who were scheduled to face the Academy this weekend, whilst Crookwell were awarded a 20-0 forfeit win in their home clash with Bungendore. Crookwell took the honours when the pair met back in Round 9, their 17-10 win at Crookwell Memorial Oval giving them the narrow cushion that has them at the top of the pile heading into Round 13. That was a much-improved performance for the Tigers against their opponents however with the Dogs having romped to a 61-12 Grand Final win last August.
With third-placed Jindabyne already assured of their points having played ADFA for double-points earlier in the season, the focus for the rest of the division is on the battle for the top four spots with Yass, Batemans Bay, Bungendore, Gungahlin and Boorowa all eyeing off a semi-final place. With that in mind, Batemans bay’s visit to Boorowa to face the Goldies stands out as a vital match-up. The Boars currently are eighth, but only six points adrift of fifth placed Batemans Bay with a win here creating a real log-jam in that finals push. The team in poleposition at present, Yass, will be confident that they can claim a five-point haul against Braidwood at Victoria Park to maintain their presence. Meanwhile, Gungahlin Eagles welcome Bungendore to Canberra, with sixth versus seventh promising a tight game where every point will be critical. As the season ramps nearer to finals time, there is no place for a slip-up. This could be one of the rounds of the year in the South Coast Monaro Second Division.

TUGGERANONG TAKE THE SPOILS IN TOP-TWO TUSSLE The women’s division’s best met at ANU North Oval last weekend for a match-up which may serve as a dress-rehearsal for the finals. Shown live on the Brumbies Facebook page, the Viqueens survived a spirited effort from the Owls Women, who were celebrating their clubs 80th year, to win 15-10. Tuggeranong star Number 8 Tayla Stanford opened the scoring in the 8th minute. The Wallaroo’s squad member took a short line off her scrumhalf and fellow Brumbies Women teammate Ash Kara, slipped by one tackler and couldn’t be stopped as she muscled over. Stanford’s influence was clear to see, carrying the ball and making easy yards whenever she chose, and a line-break in the 24th minute set up the Viqueens second of the day. Carly Hill found Kahlee Adams who dotted down to
make it 10-0 to Tuggeranong. Tuggeranong stretched their lead to 15 just after half-time and you guessed it, Tayla Stanford got the points, ghosting through on the left flank before busting over the Owls fullback à la Julian Savea. Owls staged a comeback starting with club-captain Anna Korovata dragging three Viqueens players with her over the line. Owls added another three-minutes from time, but it was to no avail as the Viqueens hung on for the win. Owls have already played their Round 13 clash with ADFA (8-0 to Owls), Tuggeranong take on Royals who are coming off a win away to the Gungahlin Eagles. Flyhalf Kasey Dragisic bagged a double along with a try a piece to Skye Churchill and Emily Brandt to seal a 24-7 win for the BlueBaggers at Nicholls Enclosed Oval.
