OWLS UPSET THE CHAMPS
The John I Dent cup enters it’s penultimate round this weekend with the top four still not set for the finals. While the Tuggeranong Vikings and the Canberra Royals sit pretty in the top two, Uni-Norths, Queanbeyan, Easts and Gungahlin are all still battling for a playoff berth. That quest got just a bit easier for the Owls last weekend as they kept up their growing reputation as ‘giant-killers’, beating the Blue Baggers Royals in a tight one at ANU North Oval. Royals pedigree was clear to see as without several front-line first-graders they put it to the Owls and seemed destined to break Uni hearts in the dying minutes. However, the Owls held firm, marched up the field and with time expiring, experienced flyhalf Tom Gilmore got in the pocket, took a breath and kicked the drop-goal which secured a famous win over the reigning champions. That victory gives Owls a five-point cushion over fifth place Easts who were just unable to beat Queanbeyan, a match where the sides couldn’t be separated by the 80 minutes. The game went back and forth in the opening forty, as the evenly matched sides traded tries. Just as Easts had opened a gap on the Whites, they had a player sent off. That man advantage gave Queanbeyan a chance to get back into
the game. With just fifteen minutes to play, the Whites went supernova, scoring five tries to tie the game up, the final five-pointer coming after the final whistle. A 46-46 tie two points won for Queanbeyan and two lost for Easts as they will feel they should have won the game. Easts will look to recover against the Eagles this week, who had a bye while the Whites will travel to Royals for a crucial clash. The final match of the Round saw a strong Vikings squad dust off Wests in Erindale, though the final score perhaps didn’t reflect the endeavour from the Lions. In reality an opening 25-minute try-barrage from the table-toppers killed off the game. Wests responded earnestly but really it was not much of a contest on the scoreboard. Vikings attacked with precision and venom, the combination of Brendon Taueki and J.P Mynhardt in the back-three opening up Wests leaving gaps in behind for the Vikings young halfback pairing of Noah Lolesio and Ryan Lonergan to poach a few scores. With just two rounds to play, anything can happen. Eagles need 10 points from their final two games to have a chance, Easts still have a shot, Queanbeyan in the driver seat for fourth but not guaranteed and Uni hoping for no lateseason dramatics. One thing is certain, it’s going to be a cracking weekend in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup!

Easts arrested a two-match losing run to claim their third win of the season when they came from behind to defeat Gungahlin Eagles 24-18 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval in Round 7. The Eagles led the match 12-7 at the interval but Easts, who had started the season well and were promising much finer things in 2018, fought back to take over the contest and, as a result, the scoreboard. Luke Duffey collected ten points in defeat for Gungahlin from a try, conversion and penalty.

A narrow 29-28 win in Second Grade saw the Whites cross for five tries with left wing Ben Pattenden grabbing a brace. FIRST DIVISION
Photo: Glenn Dawson The race for places in the semi-finals of the First Division competition has intensified ahead of this weekend’s Round 14 matches with only six competition points separating second from sixth in First Division First Grade, a statistic that promises an exciting end of the season for each of those involved in the battle for the top four. ADFA, who were inactive last week and this week, still the lead the way with 54 points with Queanbeyan Whites in second on 47 points. The Whites were made to struggle by mid-table opposition in the form of Young last weekend, the home side squeezing home 19-14 and travel to Royals this time out needing to draw on that same fighting spirit if they are to succeed once more. Royals currently with 46 points were boosted by their 34-21 defeat of Uni-North Owls at ANU North Oval. Pete Murrell and Sam Fotu crossed twice for Royals in their victory. They are shadowed by a Tuggeranong Vikings team that welcome Cooma to Viking Park this weekend fresh off an 83-7 hammering of Wests at the same venue. Goulburn, have the most intriguing matchup of the day with Hall at Poidevin Oval, who
are one place below them on the ladder and only one point adrift. The result of this contest could well be a defining moment in the season for both clubs which should set us up for a humdinger of a fixture with no room for error at this critical stage. Elsewhere, Wests welcome Uni-Norths Owls to Jamison Enclosed whilst Gungahlin Eagles are the visitors to Cranfield Oval where they will take on Young. In First Division Second Grade action the race for the top four is equally as tight with no fewer than six teams in with a genuine chance of making the semi-finals. Leaders ADFA have the week off in Round 14 with second placed Tuggeranong Vikings hosting Cooma at Viking Park. Queanbeyan in fourth meanwhile meet Royals in seventh in what is a crucial match for both. Wests, who sit sixth on forty points, are hosting Uni-Norths Owls with their sights set on a victory that would heap the pressure on those above them. Any slip-up at this stage however could spell the end of any Wests hopes for finals football. Goulburn meet Hall at Poidevin Oval in the other scheduled match.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division
The Taralga Tigers have put themselves is pole-position to finish top of the South Coast Monaro Second Division ladder after they emerged victorious from the eagerly anticipated top-of-the-table showdown with the Crookwell Dogs. The match certainly lived up to its billing as well with the Tigers claiming a 29-21 win, a victory that dragged them to within a point of Crookwell in first place with a game in hand on the league leaders. With rounds running out between now and the Round 18 finale on Saturday 11 August the race for finals places, and possible home advantage is sure to hot up and the Tigers will be full of confidence after this display. Fullback James Marmont grabbed a brace of scores whilst prop Matthew Bird and wing Darcy Hedley ensured a Tigers bonus point. Joel Croker added nine points from the boot.
Crookwell are inactive this weekend, they have already won their Round 15 fixture with ADFA, claiming a 36-0 win on June 8, which means that the Tigers trip to Hanging Rock to tackle Batemans Bay takes on even greater significance. The Bay head into that match having won 30-21 at Boorowa, a result that
16
keeps them in with an outside chance of a semi-final spot. With Jindabyne already having been awarded double-points for their win over ADFA, Yass kept up the pressure on the third-placed side by remaining fourth, racking up a bonus point in the process as they hammered Braidwood 54-5. Flyhalf Jordan Fulivai crossed for a hat-trick as the Rams cashed in to the tune of eight tries. Michael Regan kicked seven conversions for a fourteen-point haul. Bungendore made sure that they remained in touch with the finals places as they returned from Nichols Enclosed with a bonus point, five-point haul, after defeating Gungahlin Eagles 32-5. With Yass hosting Boorowa at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon, Bungendore will know that they need a positive result when Jindabyne arrive at Mick Sherd Oval to keep their good run of form going. In the other fixture scheduled for this weekend ninth-placed Braidwood welcome Gungahlin Eagles to the Braidwood Recreation Ground with the Eagles currently siting seventh and seemingly out of contention for the semifinals.
Women’s Preview
VIQUEENS CONTINUE UNBEATEN RUN Tuggeranong Viqueens continued their unbeaten 2018 season with a comprehensive 55-5 thrashing or Royals at Viking Park in Round 13. The victory gives the Viqueens a four-point lead at the top of the table over both Royals and the Owls, with the team from Uni-Norths having played one game more than the Tuggeranong outfit.
Scrumhalf Remi Wilton led the charge, the Brumbies Super W pivot running in four of her team’s nine tries, of which Emily Sogou converted five. Sogou also claimed a try of her own for an afternoon’s work of fifteen points with Regan Hart crossing the line twice, joined by Rhianna Burke and Nora Lai. Ashlea Bishop claimed a try in reply for the Royals.
Gungahlin Eagles, who were awarded a double-points win over ADFA last time out having played the Defence Force earlier in the campaign, make up the four and will face whoever comes top in the semi-finals in a fortnight’s time.
This week’s games are crutial for the chase for the number one spot. The Viqueens take on Gungahlin in a rescheduled clash from earlier rounds and will be hoping that Uni-Norths Owls can defeat Royals to enable them to enter the final round of fixtures in pole position. The game at Phillip Enclosed Oval should decide who ends the season in second place and might well provide momentum, both physically and physiologically, ahead of the semi-finals.
The Viqueens were always in control of proceedings on a cold day at Viking Park as they rocketed their points differential past a scarcely believable +500 racking up a sixth four-try bonus point of the season with a display of fast, attacking rugby, to which their visitors had little response.

Wests claimed a first win of the season with a comprehensive 31-13 victory over Uni-Norths owls at ANU North Oval on Saturday 19 May. The Round 7 victory was the visitors first of the season at the sixth attempt, their only other positive points up to then coming from a draw with Easts in Round 2. Flyhalf Sebastian Lorraway enjoyed a day to remember as he ran in a hat-trick helping Wests towards a valuable bonus point.

THE LAST TIME Uni-Norths Owls earned a crushing 38-0 win over Wests in the previous meeting between these two teams in Second Grade back in Round 7 at ANU North Oval. At Colts level it was Wests who came out on top in a thriller, edging Owls 44-40. Jasper Mazurkiewicz top scored with a tally of nineteen points via a try, four conversions and two penalties.
