PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade
Three of the top four playoffs places are confirmed. Vikings, Royals and the Owls are in. Easts and Wests are out. It’s down to Queanbeyan, Gungahlin and for that all important fourth playoff spot. Round 16 gave the Eagles hope and left the Whites hoping for some help from Uni-Norths. The job for the Gungahlin Eagles is clear, but not simple. If they get a bonus-point in victory against the Owls this weekend, they’ll claim fourth from Queanbeyan, having already passed them in the for and against stakes. Though able to force the four try requirement on the Eagles, having managed to nab a bonus point of their own right at the death against Royals in Round 16, the Whites won’t have the opportunity to impact proceedings in the final round as they are on the bye. Their four match points already locked in, Queanbeyan will look to Uni for a hand in helping them squeeze into fourth. Owls place in third is cemented, but it is interesting to note that they can of course influence who they’ll play in their elimination final next week. Beat Gungahlin or at least deny them a bonus, and they’ll play Queanbeyan. That would leave the Owls the prospect of playing a side that has beaten them twice in 2018 to advance.
Ironically, it was after a defeat at the hands of the Owls when Gungahlin’s fortunes began to shift. Down to 12 men at one stage in that game, the Eagles fought to the death at ANU North Oval, losing the game, but perhaps galvanizing their charges for a late year surge. Since that dour day for the Eagles, they have won five of six to give themselves a chance going into the final round. The latest in that burst of good form was a demolition of playoff rivals Easts. An attacking masterclass in the first half sealed the win for the visitors as Easts could do little to slow down a strong Eagles outfit, lead by Brumbies flyhalf Wharenui Hawera. Easts showed their class in attack in the second period, but it wasn’t to be. A fine season for the Eastern suburbs, they’ll be back better again in 2019. Royals retained the Bob Hitchcock shield against Queanbeyan becoming the inaugural holders as a result. The Blue baggers held out the visiting Whites who gave their all-in defeat to win 28-24. The other game saw the Owls make a statement by dusting off Wests, 40-12. It’s crunch time now. Vikings, Royals and UniNorths can look ahead to finals, while Easts and Wests play for pride. Whites wait, hoping for an Owls win while the Eagles plot for an unlikely finals berth.

A four try haul from winger JP Mynhardt was the highlight of Tuggeranong Vikings huge 7124 victory over Easts when the pair meet at Viking Park back in Round 5 on Saturday 5 May. The home side ran in thirteen tries on the day with eight other players crossing alongside Mynhardt, the only other to grab multiple scores was replacement Maika Ravouvou. Incredibly, only three of the tries were converted, by three different players as Noah Lolesio, Jordan Jackson-Hope and Blake Henman all potted one goal.

THE LAST TIME Tuggeranong Vikings made sure that they enjoyed a successful Round 5 by claiming winning bonus points across all three grades when Easts visited Viking Park in early May. The Second Grade match-up saw Vikings stroll to a 45-14 success whilst they racked up more points in the Colts division, emerging as 57-21 victors in what was a highly-charged and entertaining game of rugby. Both home wins helped Vikings push towards the top of the table in the early stages of the season.

THE LAST TIME Two victories for Uni-Norths Owls made it a highly successful day in Second Grade and Colts when Gungahlin Eagles visited ANU North back at the beginning of May for their Round 5 fixtures. The Owls won a tense match in Second Grade by 39-29 to increase their chances of making the top four whilst there was a grinding victory at Colts level, the Owls winning 21-7 in a game between two teams that would be heavily involved in the shake-up for end of season finals places.

FIRST DIVISION
ADFA COULD BE IN BOX-SEAT FOR TOP SPOT The Australian Defence Force Academy are likely to be in the box-seat as we head into the Final Round of the First Division First Grade competition following their midweek points double-header against Easts/RMC at Dowsett Oval. A win in that match played on Thursday evening would put ADFA to the top of the table and, by the time you are reading this, could well have secured them the first placed ranking. The team from the Academy will end the season at the same venue in Round 15 when they welcome Young. Should ADFA slip-up against Easts/RMC they will be hoping that their opponents can do them a favour when they host Tuggeranong Vikings at Griffith Oval, where the Vikings will be going all-out to secure their own position in the top two, if not first place. Vikings warmed up for the match with a 65-5 hammering of Cooma at Viking Park. Elsewhere, there is very little margin for error for a clutch of teams hoping to take part in Finals football as only four points separate Goulburn in third to Queanbeyan in sixth. Those two clash at Poidevin Oval in a match
that could see the Dirty Reds drop out of the top four entirely if other results conspired against them. A Whites win, coupled with successes for Royals and Hall, could doom Goulburn for 2018. Alternatively, a Goulburn win will eliminate the Whites from the running. Queanbeyan were beaten 28-10 by Royals in Round 14, a result that allows Royals to edge into the top four at the expense of Hall who fell 31-10 to the Dirty Reds. Royals travel to Jamison Enclosed Oval this weekend looking favourites to secure fourth spot whilst Hall travel to Rotary Oval in Cooma hoping for a bonus-point win and for Wests to do them a favour. Pride will be on the line in the only fixture with no finals outcome possible for either side, as Gungahlin Eagles welcome UniNorths Owls to Nicholls Enclosed. The Eagles wings were well and truly clipped by Young in Round 15, the home side winning 54-19 at Cranfield Oval, while the Owls scored only their second win of the campaign defeating Wests 33-24.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division HUGE MATCHES MIGHT SHAKE-UP TOP FOUR The race for finals places is getting ever closer in the South Coast Monaro Second Division with only three rounds of the regular season left to play. With games running out there are five, possibly six teams, vying for the coveted semi-finals positions and this weekend will, as usual, have a huge bearing on the outcome. Most pressed for points are sixth placed Batemans Bay, currently nine points adrift of the top four and with the unenviable task of trying to drag themselves back into contention by travelling to Crookwell and gaining a victory against the ever-consistent Dogs. Crookwell have an outside chance of top spot, should the Tigers falter, but showed no intention of letting their spot slip as they defeated ADFA 36-0 last week. Batemans Bay meanwhile were beaten at home, Taralga Tigers returning from Hanging Rock with a 41-24 win that almost ends the Bay’s season. A surprise win at Crookwell would have not just a huge bearing on the top four but would effectively seal the Tigers top spot. Taralga host Gungahlin Eagles in this round aiming to just do that off their own bat.
16
There are two matches of huge importance at John Connors Oval in Jindabyne and Mick Sherd Oval in Bungendore with points crucial. In Jindabyne, the Bushpigs welcome Yass as three meets four in what will be a monumental battle. With fifth-placed Bungendore hosting lowly Braidwood and expected to gain the win, a loss for either Yass or Jindabyne will likely see them end the weekend adrift of the top four. Jindabyne were stunned by Bungendore in Round 15, the Mudchooks claiming a 40-15 victory that dragged them back into contention and will leave the teams currently occupying the finals spots glancing more than nervously over their shoulder at the charging men from Bungendore who have six wins from the last seven scheduled fixtures. The other match in Round 15 will see ADFA, currently bottom of the ladder and without a win in 2018, heading to Boorowa Showground to meet a Boorowa side that sits on thirty points and is eighth in the ten-team competition. Boorowa were competitive in a 29-22 loss to Yass last weekend and will be heavily favoured for the win.
Women’s Preview
OWLS HAMMER ROYALS AS VIQUEENS MARCH ON The Uni-Norths Owls put in a statement performance as they defeated Royals 52-0 at Phillip Enclosed Oval on Saturday to leapfrog their opposition on the ladder and set down their marker as potential Grand Finalists come the end of the season. The owls scored eight tries as they comprehensively outplayed the Royals on their own patch. Centre Paremo Mash led the owls onslaught crossing for a hat-trick of tries as the Owls ran riot on a pleasant day in Canberra. Jane Garraway, Rosalie Aumale, Jess Howard, Georgia O’Neill and Sophie Williams also claimed tries in the big victory with Bridgette Cunningham landing six conversions. For the defeated Royals, Katie Rose and Louise Burrows put in a decent shift but were unable to stop the flood of points. Tuggeranong Viqueens meanwhile continued their march to top spot as they
remained unbeaten in 2018 after securing a massive 70-5 victory over Gungahlin Eagles at Griffith Oval. The Viqueens claimed twelve tries in the win with Steph Pollard leading the charge with three. Remi Wilton, Tayla Stanford and Michaela Leonard scored two tries each with further scores added by Stef Stewart-Jones, Emily Sogal and Tori Brooks whilst Sogal landed four conversions and Stewart-Jones one. In this week’s final round of matches the Viqueens travel to Griffith Oval once more as they take on Royals with Uni-Norths making the trip to Dowsett Oval to tackle ADFA. The women’s finals series will commence on Saturday 4 August at Viking Park when the first placed team on the ladder take on the second in the Qualification Semi-Final whilst third will meet fourth in the Elimination Semi-Final at the same venue twenty-four hours later.

A Luke Kimber try-double helped Royals to an important Round 5 victory over Wests at Phillip Enclosed Oval on Saturday 5 May as the Premiers rediscovered some form following their surprise loss to Easts. Kimber was joined on the try-scoring list by right wing Seth Going, who also crossed twice, and prop Sioni Mau as Royals grabbed a bonus point for their troubles. Wests claimed three tries of their own but were always playing catch-up and unable to get close enough to pounce.

THE LAST TIME There was a win apiece in Second Grade and Colts when Wests and Royals locked horns back in Round 5 at Phillip Enclosed Oval with Wests winning the Second Grade match and Royals gaining a measure of revenge by taking home the spoils form the Colts encounter. In Second Grade, the match went to the very wire as Wests claimed a thrilling victory by a narrow threepoint margin, eventually triumphing 34-31. It was less of a contest at Colts level however, as Royals blitzed their peers winning 54-12.
