PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW
After months of anticipation it’s finally time to kick-off the 2018 Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup competition and there’s a trio of high quality fixtures to lead the way into what is sure to be another exciting, challenging and exhilarating season of local club rugby. The opening Hahn Super Dry Match of the Round, featuring live on BarTv Sports, is Easts v Uni-Norths Owls at Griffith Oval in what promises to be an end-to-end battle to start the season. Easts will need no extra motivation as they aim to break their duck that saw them go winless in 2017, but if they do, then the fact the club is celebrating their 80th Anniversary throughout the day might provide that extra surge. There are also a brace of trophies up for grabs on the day as the teams battle for the Owen Brown Memorial Cup and in a new initiative starting this season, the Bob Hitchcock Territory Shield. Neither side made a dent on finals last term but have loftier aspirations this time around. Over at Viking Park there is a blockbuster clash to start the 2018 season as the home
team Tuggeranong Vikings welcome the Champions Royals as the teams compete for the Allan ‘Wal’ Scollen Cup. Usually matches between the Vikings and Royals are fullblooded, high-octane affairs with plenty of running rugby to get the pulses racing and we are expecting nothing different from the fixture that will be a superb way to see in the 2018 campaign. And let’s not forget the season opener at David Campese Oval in Queanbeyan where the Whites will host the Gungahlin Eagles in what’s sure to be an affair that’s difficult to predict. In recent years both teams have pushed for finals football and have threatened to get their hands on the silverware and getting the year off to a winning start will be paramount at the forefront of minds of players and coaches of both teams. Club rugby is the lifeblood of the game in Canberra and these six teams that take to the field this weekend, Wests have the bye, will all harbour ambitions that this term will see them in the winner’s circle. Round 1 won’t see any champions crowned, but it may set the scene for an unforgettable season.

It was a double success for the Uni-Norths Owls in their last outings against Easts in both these grades in Round 15, which was held on Saturday 15 July last season. The Colts had a tough time of it in their match, squeaking home 21-12 and being pushed all the way whilst the 2nd Grade side had an easier time of it romping to an 88-0 win with both games taking place at ANU North Oval.

FIRST DIVISION PREVIEW
Source: Vikings Facebook Page
First Division First Grade Champions Gungahlin Eagles kick-off their 2018 season with a trip to David Campese Oval and a match against Queanbeyan Whites as action in the lower grades commences. The Whites were eliminated in the finals last term, after finishing the season in third place and will be out to put down a statement of intent against a team that was the standout in this division. In a packed opening day calendar there are six fixtures in all with last season’s second-placed team ADFA hosting Wests at Dowsett Oval in a fixture that may well produce some fireworks. The Defence Force side were incredibly strong at this level in 2017, making the Preliminary Final where they fell to Tuggeranong Vikings after recording some heavy wins during the regular season. The Vikings will begin their campaign, aiming to reach another Grand Final, with a home fixture against Royals at Viking Park with both sides intent on getting 2018 off to a winning start. Elsewhere, Easts/RMC take on Uni-Norths Owls at Griffith Oval, Hall welcome Goulburn to Hall Oval in what
should be an intriguing clash of styles, whilst Cooma and Young meet at Rotary Oval in the New South Wales town. First Division Second Grade Premiers Tuggeranong Vikings get their season off and running when they welcome Royals to Viking Park on Saturday. The Vikings were exquisite in this grade last term, running amok in an unbeaten season that saw them win all nineteen matches they played including a 38-0 Grand Final win over Queanbeyan. The Whites welcome Gungahlin Eagles to David Campese Oval for their season opener, aiming to get back to the Grand Final and go one better this time around whilst the Eagles, semi-finalists in 2017, will be thinking likewise. RMC, beaten Preliminary Finalists by a solitary point in August, start 2018 by welcoming UniNorths Owls to Griffith Oval. In the other two scheduled matches for Round 1, ADFA, who ended 2017 in fifth place, play hosts to Wests at Dowsett Oval with Hall and Goulburn meeting up at hall Oval. Both will be aiming to improve on their 2017 efforts. Cooma, who ended last year bottom of the pile have the bye.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division The South Coast Monaro 2nd Division is back and teams across the region are reading a rearing to go as they try to hunt down Crookwell whose dominance of the competition saw them lose just one game all season. Crookwell went on to win it all, thrashing Taralaga, 61-12 in the Grand Final. Crookwell kick off their season against Gungahlin Eagles at home today, the Eagles have sides in all five grades of ACT and Southern NSW competitions. Crookwell got the better of the Eagles in both their meetings last season including a 91-0 victory for Crookwell away from home. Beaten Finalists Taralga will be taking on Jindabyne at Taralga Sports Field, the home side getting the better of Jindabyne in both games last season thought the second encounter was a dogged affair with Taralaga just edging out the win. Bungendore finished second in the table last season and get their season underway with
16
a trip to Batemans Bay. Bungendore won on both occasions last year and will be likely be there when finals footy comes around. More battle of the B’s as Boorowa begins 2018 by welcoming Braidwood to Boorowa Showground. A trend for the competition with a distinct gap between the two halves of the table, Boorowa beat Braidwood twice in 2017. Rounding out the Round 1 rippers is ADFA’s debut in the competition which will see them take on 2017 wooden spooners Yass at Dowsett Oval. Yass won just two games last season and will be hoping for a better return in 2018. A colourful competion with squads from across the region, 2018 looks to be shaping up as a great year for the South Coast Monaro Second Division. All games kicking off at 2:30pm, get down to your local club to see some real grass roots rugby.
