SILVERWARE ON THE LINE AS WHITES MEET OWLS Queanbeyan and University-Norths first grades will play for the Pat Matthews Cup on Saturday at Campese Oval with the visitors aiming to regain the trophy that was clamed by the Whites in 2018. Last year’s victory was the fifth time that the Whites had won the Cup, the Owls having taken home the silverware on four occasions to date.

The Pat Matthews Cup recognises the contribution of Matthews to the Queanbeyan club and to rugby in general. He played 154 first grade games with the Whites and more than 600 games in total. He was associated with University-Norths packing his bags to play with them in Golden Oldies tournaments. He suffered a heart attack, and passed away, after a match in 2009. This week’s Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round will see Wests hosting the Vikings at Jamison Oval as the Vikings aim to kick-start their season having suffered a surprise home loss to a fourteen-man Gungahlin Eagles after the siren at Viking Park in Round 1. Nick Scrivener’s team looked likely to be the victors after tries from Ryan Lonergan, Michael

Oakman-Hunt, Ernest Suavai and Darcy Swain, allied to the boot of Lonergan, had them ahead as time was ticking away. The dismissal of Matt Hawke in the second half appeared to have swung the momentum inexorably towards the hosts, but Alex Small’s match-winner saw Vikings defeated. The Eagles, who had Joel Atkins, Jahrome Brown and Mack Hansen cross for tries, will be out to make it two from two when they welcome Easts to Nicholls Enclosed on the weekend. The home side will be guided around the park once more by Plus500 Brumbies flyhalf Wharenui Hawera, who was in exceptional form in the opening round. It’s the first match of the new season for Easts as the Griffith-based club look to get off to a similar stellar start as they managed in 2018 when Tim Cornforth guided the perennial underachievers to an inaugural Bob Hitchcock Shield success. Cornforth will be asking his team to start brightly again this time around as they look to mount a serious challenge for the top four and finals football.

REPRESENTING THE WALLABIES – 1960-1980: PART 2

A new series looking back at the biographies of the ACT’s First Wallabies, from 1960-1980, taken verbatim from the book, Australia Rugby Union: The Game and the Players by Jack Pollard (1984)

DAVID NOEL GRIMMOND

(Queanbeyan, ACT, NSW Country, NSW) 1 Test An efficient country winger who progressed from the ACT, NSW Country, and NSW teams, to a place in John Thornett’s Australian team for the 1964 New Zealand tour. He had a successful tour, despite limited opportunities, and at the age of 20 played in the Christchurch Test when New Zealand won 18-3. The following season Grimmond played in all major representative matches and was counted very unlucky to be left out of the Wallaby team to tour Britain and France in 1966-67. He defected to league not long after the touring party was announced.

RODERICK PAUL BATTERHAM (“BATTERS”) (Gordon, ACT, Parramatta, NSW) 2 Tests

A popular, auburn-haired winger who made a valuable contribution wherever he played rugby. His wholehearted endeavour and unselfishness influenced his team-mates and players as he matured into a splendid captain and coach. He deserved much

greater consideration from selectors in a long career that included three overseas tours with Australian teams, but only two Tests. He was in the losing team in seven club grand finals before he crossed Randwick’s line for a matchwinning try in 1977, and gave Parramatta its first Premiership – a fitting, Hollywood-style climax for this sportsmanlike schoolmaster. Batterham began his career with Gordon, where he played in three losing grand finals teams. At Canberra, he was in two more, and he played in the 1974 and 1975 Parramatta sides which lost grand finals before his great 1977 win. In between, he had a haphazard career in representative football. He made his first Test appearance at Wellington, New Zealand, in 1967, against the All Blacks in the NZ Rugby Union’s 75th Jubilee match. In 1968, he went on the short Wallaby tour of Ireland and Scotland, but did not play in a Test. In 1969, he failed to win a Test place in South Africa on the Australian tour. He finally won his second Test place in 1970 in Sydney against Scotland and celebrated with two tries in Australia’s 23-3 victory. Since his retirement in 1978, with about 250 club games to his credit, he has been a very energetic coach. Tony Melrose, a first-grade star whilst still at school, was one of his many outstanding pupils. In 1983, Test veteran Tony Miller paid him the compliment of asking him to coach the Warringah back-line.

BOARS STUN DOGS IN OPENING ROUND South Coast Monaro Preview

The Batemans Bay Boars claimed the result of the weekend in the South Coast Monaro Division 2 competition as they surprisingly defeated perennial title challengers the Crookwell Dogs 33-31. An after the siren score was the difference between the two teams in a match played in erratic weather conditions. Robert Thomas crossed twice for the Boars with William Thomas and Tremayne Chatfield claiming the other tries for the visitors. James Thomas added thirteen points from the boot which negated the Dogs’ efforts, including a brace of tries from Ben Seaman, Liam Jones, Edward Price and Will Croker also crossed for five-pointers, but the Boars did enough to claim the shock opening day success.

Yass Rams are the next test for the Tigers and they’ll arrive at Taralga Sports Field in good heart following a bonus-point 40-5 win over the Broulee Dolphins at Captain Oldrey Park. It was a chastening return to this level for the Dolphins who were on the wrong end of a six tries to one defeat and they’ll hope for better when Jindabyne make the trip to Broulee.

Jindabyne started the season themselves in sharp form as they turned over Bungendore at Mick Sherd Oval as the Bushpigs came away from the game having scored seven tries in a 37-3 win. Jared Cummins started the season with two tries whilst Matthew Norman, Ian Vagg, Brandon Nikora, Liam Pepper and Simon Rudd all followed Cummins over the try-line. ROYALS HOPES FOR WOMEN’S SUCCESS The start of the Women’s season is fast approaching with the teams involved in the Women’s Rugby 10’s pre-season competition last weekend, ironing out the last few chinks before the 15-a-side action gets underway. Last season saw Tuggeranong Viqueens downing Uni-Norths owls 32-8 in the Grand Final with the owls surpassing Royals as the team that challenged the Tuggeranong march to the title. However, 2019 Royals Head Coach Darren Goodwin is sure that his new-look side can bounce back into contention. “We always have a winning mentality and now we have a very young side, so we are kind of in that rebuilding stage,” Goodwin said whilst detailing some notable changes in his squad leading into their first match. “I think Skye Churchill, who missed out on Super W selection this year will go super well. As well as Brooke Gilroy, they’re just 17-yearold girls coming out of high school, but we will look to them for their experience, I think there are some big times ahead for them. “We will have a few girls in the team who have come from the Super Rugby, taking six girls who play at a national level will benefit

us quite a bit. We’ve been in preseason since Australia Day, from there the girls have been training together as a whole club and we've been heavily preparing for the past four weeks.” Last week’s tens competition was the ideal stepping stone to the new full-size season with Goodwin sure that the tens competition, and women’s sport in general, is moving in the right direction. “I really encourage girls to go in the 15’s game over Sevens” Goodwin commented. “I think Sevens is a bit unrealistic and it’s a different form of rugby. Tens is a great way for the girls to get into the game, get them experience, a bit of tackling and just getting them on the paddock. Tens is also a good way to build a team, realistically if you want to play 15’s you need twenty players and if you want to play Tens you need fifteen players”. “Ten years ago, Girls Rugby was probably unknown. Over the last five years a lot more girls are looking to play and have a go. At Royals we are doing pretty well, we have a 16’s and an 18’s and trying to keep a link between the juniors and seniors is so important to keep girls in the sport.”

OLD BOYS WEEKEND IS ONE TO LOOK FORWARD TO FOR WESTS Wests will be looking to get their 2019 John I Dent Cup campaign underway this weekend with a possible upset win against defending champions Tuggeranong on Saturday afternoon. This weekend marks a special occasion at Wests as they will be hosting their annual Old Boys Weekend. Past and present players along with their friends and family will flock to Jamison Oval which will hopefully get the playing group in the right mindset for such an important day to the club. The Old Boys Weekend is one that Head Coach Craig Robberds loves looking forward to each year as it demonstrates how strong a club Wests are as it brings everyone that has been involved with the club over the years together. “It’s going to make a huge difference having all the Old Boys there. It’s going to get quite vocal especially once all the beers set in. The banter will be great, and we are hoping for it to be one of the biggest

24

crowds of the year for us,” said Robberds looking ahead to the weekend. Wests are currently entering a phase in its life where it needs to rebuild and start to create a rugby strong program and keep players at the club or transition them from Juniors into Seniors. The majority of the playing squad at the senior level are actually meant to be playing in the Colts program. The club has gone through a major change in the off season with several new players entering the squad who will be etching to get some quality game time. Robberds said that the young boys that have come to the club are going to make a really big difference. “Declan Meredith has come down from Cairns and he’s got a lot of promise that he has shown in pre-season. Along with Via Tuiliga who has come from the Raiders Under 20’s program and Liae Tuiliga who have come from the Victorian Schoolboys side,” Robberds said.

It hasn’t been completely smooth sailing heading into their first match of the season after some hard-fought preseason matches against Queanbeyan, Wollongong and Shute Shield team Gordan up in Bowral. The team did however travel overseas to Tonga in late January for six days where they played against the Tonga A team which was a life changing experience for the players as some had never done anything like it before. They also did some tough training as well as some intense coaching exercises. All to bring the entire squad closer as one, bond, and get set for what’s going to be a tough season for them. After going from Grand Final contenders in 2017, Wests finished as wooden spooners in their 2018 campaign. The goal this year, is to just do better than last year.

“We have now got quite a lot of depth in our Colts program unlike last year. So there are going to be several boys playing in First Grade that are meant to be playing in Colts.” Club legend Ben Coutts said at the season launch that a team can’t win in First Grade without a club around you. Despite still struggling for numbers in their Juniors, they’re hoping to build on the depth they’ve now got at the senior level and have that transition into some wins. Wests are known for an upset or two throughout the year so why not start it off against a Vikings side that is reeling after being boiled over five minutes after the siren against Gungahlin.
