PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade VIKINGS HAND OUT LESSON TO EAGLES

Tuggeranong Vikings were in irresistible form at Gungahlin Enclosed on Saturday afternoon as they swept aside the Gungahlin Eagles to romp to a 66-24 win in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round. In a sensational first-half, in which everything the Vikings touched turned to gold, the Nick Scrivener led Tuggeranong were 59-5 up at the break. Fullback Brendan Teauki had a field day, running in four tries and benefitting from the exceptional work of a back-line in which Plus500 Brumbies stars Ryan Lonergan and Jordan Jackson-Hope controlled proceedings from the get-go. Up front, Sione Taula and Joe Vejvoda were the standouts from a dominant Vikings pack. Based on the manner of their victory the Vikings will travel to ANU North Oval to tackle the winless Owls on Saturday brimming with confidence that they can continue their good form after suffering an opening day set-back against the Champions Royals in Round 1. The Eagles meanwhile will look to lick their wounds and regroup ahead of the challenge of Royals at Phillip Enclosed. There were some bright sparks for Gungahlin in the defat to Vikings, not least a spirited second half in which they outscored the victors 19-7 with

Issak Fines and Captain Matt Hawke impressive throughout. A hat-trick of tires from winger George Morseu earned Easts a share of the spoils as they came from 3-22 behind to draw 22-22 with Wests at Jamison Enclosed Oval. Morseu touched down his treble score with five minutes remaining giving Easts a chance to win for successive weeks but, unlike in their drought-breaking win against Uni-Norths Owls in Round 1, the kick was missed and the visitors had to settle for a draw. Easts take the week off in Round 4 whilst Wests go searching for a first win of the 2018 season when they meet Queanbeyan Whites at Jamison Enclosed. Both teams are looking for the victory for differing reasons. Wests need to get their season off and running with a success whilst the Whites are aiming to go three-in-a-row having seen off the Eagles in Round 1. The Queanbeyan side remained unbeaten after two matches by notching a 24-15 victory over the Owls at ANU North Oval. The game was close from the get-go and was only really settled in favour of the visiting side when winger Jamie Marmont crossed for a crucial game-defining try with time running out on the clock. Will Goddard added the conversion and a late penalty to secure the win for the Whites.

FIRST DIVISION

POINTS GALORE IN LOWER GRADE ACTION

Image Credit: Royals Facebook page Queanbeyan Whites were the big winners from Round 2 of First Division First Grade competition as they racked up their second win of the season by defeating Uni-Norths Owls 36-12 at ANU North Oval on a windy and cold Saturday afternoon in the Nation’s Capital. The Whites had begun their season by winning well and will be out for a third win in succession when they travel to Wests in Round 3. Wests bounced back from their opening round loss to ADFA to record a 34-31 win over Easts/RMC in a heart-stopper of a match at Jamison Enclosed Oval. ADFA meanwhile went two-from-two as they white-washed Cooma at Rotary Oval with a thumping 39-0 away victory. The Defence Force outfit travel to Cranfield Oval to take on Young this weekend whilst Easts/RMC host Cooma.

Elsewhere, Hall, who have won both their opening round matches welcome Uni-Norths to Hall Oval having enjoyed a relatively trouble-free 48-12 away day win over Young in Round 2. Hall were in the winner’s circle in Round 1 when they saw off Goulburn and will be favoured by many to have the edge on Owls. In First Division Second Grade RMC continued their good start to the 2018 competition as they won for the second week in a row, adding the scalp of Wests to that of Uni-Norths from Round 1. RMC emerged victorious from the clash with a 36-13 positive result.

Royals are also undefeated after two rounds, they shut-out Goulburn by 29-0 at Poidevin Oval, whilst ADFA are in the same boat with the Defence Force Academy thrashing Cooma 40-12 down at Rotary Oval. Queanbeyan Whites complete the list of teams who have a Royals meet Gungahlin at Phillip Enclosed 100% record heading into Round 3, the Whites Oval in Round 3 with the hosts aiming having beaten Uni-Norths 14-10 in a bit of a to bounce back from their 31-26 loss to dogfight at ANU North Oval. Goulburn at Poidevin Oval. Gungahlin meanwhile held Tuggeranong to a 17-17 Gungahlin Eagles meanwhile heaped more draw in blustery conditions in a match that misery on Tuggeranong, the Vikings losing for was played to a very high standard. The a second week in a row, beaten 39-15 by a Vikings host Goulburn at Viking Park in what fired-up home side. should be a decent hit-out for both clubs.

15

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division SCINTILLATING RUGBY IN SOUTH COAST BATTLES The South Coast Monaro – Second Division resumed action this past weekend with five scintillating fixtures being played out across the region. Despite the wet and windy conditions, there was some fabulous football played, with high scoring affairs littering the round of games. Bungendore’s 90-5 hammering of ADFA certainly fit that description, the home side running in some quality tries on their way to scoring nearly a century of points. Bungendore will most likely have a much harder task this week when they take on 2017 premiers Crookwell. ADFA meanwhile look to find some semblance of form when they travel to Taralga. Premiers Crookwell look on pace to go backto-back this year with a comfortable win against Braidwood on the weekend meaning they remain unbeaten in 2018. Crookwell will take on last year’s wooden-spooners Bungendore at Mick Sherd Oval while Braidwood will come up against Jindabyne this week with the fixture to be played at John Connors Oval.

16

Taralga and Yass played out a tight affair on Saturday, the final-score falling 36-33 in favour of Taralga to end a fantastic match. Yass will feel they can get a result this time out when they take on Batemans Bay at home in Victoria Park. Batemans Bay were handed their first loss of the season last week against the Gungahlin Eagles, going down 39-28 at Nicholls Enclosed Oval. The Eagles, who are the only club to have a side in all five grades, travel to Boorowa in Round three hoping to continue in the same vein. Elsewhere, Boorowa took on Jindabyne in the final game of Round 2, succumbing to a Jindabyne side getting their first win of the season, the visitors hanging on to claim a three-point win with an 18-15 success. Both sides were mid table last season, so it’s an excellent result for Jindabyne getting one over their table rivals.

Women’s Preview HUGE WIN FOR VIQUEENS IN OPENER

Tuggeranong Viqueens, who were beaten Grand Finalists in last season’s Women’s Rugby competition, began their quest to claim this year’s silverware in some style as they demolished an outmatched Gungahlin Eagles 116-0 at Nicholls Enclosed Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Viqueens were unstoppable against an Eagles side who battled gamely but just could not compete with their more experienced opponents. Brumbies Buildcorp Super W forward Tayla Stanford led the way with four tries for Tuggeranong whilst there was a hat-trick for her Super W team-mate, scrumhalf Remi Wilton. Kirra Burke matches Stanford’s feat with four tries as the Viqueens registered an eighteen try haul in total. Further scores came from Paris Robinson and Rhianna Burke,

who both crossed twice, whilst Ema Masi, Steph Pollard and Emily Sogal also crossed the line. Sogal enjoyed a field day with the boot as well, notching eleven conversions to finish with a personal point’s haul of twentyseven in a game in which Brumbies prop Peta Cox was named Player of the Match. Tuggeranong will welcome Uni-Norths Owls to Viking Park this weekend with the Owls likely to provide a sterner test of the Viqueens credentials. The other women’s fixture set to take place in Round 3 will see Royals officially start the defence of their title won at Viking Park last August when they meet Gungahlin Eagles at Phillip Enclosed Oval. The match scheduled between Royals and ADFA at Dowsett Oval on Saturday was called-off and will be replayed.

It was the Tuggeranong Vikings who came out on top in the last meeting between these teams at ANU North, a Round 14 fixture played on Saturday 8 July 2017. Vikings were pushed mighty hard by a belligerent Owls outfit who were in the game for large parts of an absorbing encounter. The Vikings though always seemed to have the upper hand and eased away to claim a 34-5, bonus-point, victory.

THE LAST TIME An absolute nail-biter at ANU North ended with the Vikings taking home the win in the Second Grade clash in Round 14 with the visiting team seeing off the Owls by a solitary point, winning 37-36 in dramatic circumstances. It was much easier afternoon for the Vikings Colts however who were in imperious form as they swatted aside the home side to claim a try-scoring bonus point as they racked up half a century of points in a 50-15 victory.
