WHITES WELCOME VIKINGS TO QUEANBEYAN

This weekend’s Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round will feature Queanbeyan Whites and Tuggeranong Vikings at David Campese Field as two teams who will expect to push for finals football go head-to-head. Whites enter the match having won all three of their games so far in 2018, defeating Gungahlin Eagles, Uni-Norths Owls and, latterly, Wests whom they downed 26-20 at Jamison Enclosed Oval last weekend. The visitors and Wests shared eight tries in all, but it was the boot of Will Goddard that made the difference, the flyhalf landing a hat-trick of conversions whilst Wests kicked none. Vikings meanwhile were stretched to the very last sinew as Uni-Norths Owls almost staged a boil-over at ANU North Oval. The Owls led 17-12 with seconds to spare when prop Sione Taula crossed to level the scores. Brendon Taueki missed what would have been the match-clinching conversion. But the owls deservedly took something from the match. Winger Panashe Kamhara earlier crossed for a brace for Owls with Phil Ferreira adding the third home score, Jordan Thompson landing one conversion. Flanker Joey Vejvoda and Taueki had scored the first two Vikings tries with fullback Taueki converting one. Plus500

Brumbies prop Ben Alexander enjoyed a rare outing for the Owls and performed well in the pack. Easts put the Bob Hitchcock Territory Shield that they won against Owls in Round 1 up for grabs for the first time when they welcome Premiers Royals to Griffith Oval. Easts have won one and drawn one of their opening two matches and will be keen to test Royals who opened their season with two wins. The second of those victories came last weekend when Brumbies prop Faalelei Sione was in barnstorming form. The front rower snaffled a hat-trick of tries as Royals shook off a valiant and tenacious Gungahlin Eagles to eventually win 38-5 at Phillip Enclosed Oval. Pedro Rolando added eleven points with the boot from four conversions and a penalty with number eight Michael Fakava adding the other Royals score. The Eagles will aim to bounce back in aggressive style when Wests are the visitors to Gungahlin Enclosed Oval. Wests were narrowly beaten by the Whites in Round 2 and have only a draw with Easts to their name so far in 2018. Brodie Leber, Seb Lorraway and Charlie Luteru (2) were their try-scorers in the loss to Queanbeyan and they will hope that their goal-kicking improves significantly for this fixture.

Griffith Oval was far from a happy hunting ground for Easts the last time they welcomed Royals to their home venue, the Round 16 match-up in late July last season. Royals were well on their way to topping the ladder at this stage, unbeaten thus far and to remain that way throughout the season, and romped to victory claiming ten tries in a big 68-0 away win. Ben Johnston led the way for Royals with a hat-trick whilst Michael Fakava crossed twice.

Angus Le Lievre added 33 points of his own, via three tries and nine conversions, in a one-sided match. It was much closer at Colts level however as Royals edged home 29-21 in a nervy contest. Both sides were to miss out on Finals football.

It was a tough and exciting clash which was worthy of the two best sides in the Second Grade competition in 2017. Vikings Colts were made to work hard for their win on the same day, claiming the points with a 25-14 success. Bradley Winchester scored all the Whites points with two tries and two conversions.

FIRST DIVISION

Queanbeyan Whites recorded their third win of the season in First Division First Grade as they maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 52-21 win over Wests at Jamison Oval. Fraser Kemp, Nathan Smith and Veni Fifita claimed two tries each as the Whites racked up sight in total in a comprehensive performance. The Whites put their 100% record on the line this weekend against Tuggeranong Vikings at David Campese Field. The Vikings were held to a 24-24 draw by Goulburn in their match at Viking Park, with honours even after an excellent contest. Goulburn are at home in Round 4 as they welcome Wests to Poidevin Oval. ADFA, who feature at GIO Stadium this evening in the Military Round clash with RMC, are also at 100% with their third win coming courtesy of a 43-10 away win at Young. ADFA meet Hall at Dowsett Oval prior to their match before the Brumbies v Crusaders Super Rugby game. Hall were big winners in Round 3, thrashing Uni-Norths Owls 52-0 at Hall Oval with the Owls looking to bounce back from that heavy loss when they welcome Cooma to ANU North Oval. Cooma were on the losing

side at Griffith Oval seven days ago as Easts/ RMC downed them by 36-19, a decent effort from the home side who registered a first win of the season. Royals meanwhile, are two from three having won a battle of attrition with Gungahlin Eagles at Phillip Enclosed Oval. Royals will provide the opposition for Easts/RMC at Griffith Oval in what is sure to be an exciting match-up. In Frist Division Second Grade Queanbeyan Whites lost their first match of the season, falling to Wests in compelling fashion at Jamison Enclosed Oval as the home team won a thriller by a narrow seven-point margin, prevailing at the final whistle by 38-31. The Whites host Tuggeranong this afternoon whilst Wests travel to Poidevin Oval to play Goulburn. Royals, who meet RMC at Griffith in Round 4, were beaten at home by Gungahlin (17-20) whilst there were wins for Uni-North Owls, away to Hall (10-20) and Tuggeranong, who beat Goulburn 28-26 at Viking Park.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division MASSIVE WIN FOR UNDEFEATED TARALGA Taralga scored fifteen tries as they blitzed ADFA 103-0 at Taralga Sports Field in Round 3 of the South Coast Monaro Second Division Competition playing some brilliant rugby and running in some memorable tries.

win of the season last time out. Yass were the victims of the coastal side’s success, with Batemans Bay edging a thriller, coming out on top by a single-point with a 34-33 victory at Victoria Park.

Samuel Conlon and Christian Hoolihan both claimed hat-tricks in the one-sided rout with centre Nicholas Bennett ending the day with thirty-eight points to his name from two tries and fourteen conversions. A tougher task should await them at Braidwood Recreation Ground this week however they will still be strong favourites to win.

Crookwell welcome Yass to Crookwell Memorial Field this weekend with the Dogs three from three thus far. Indeed, such has been their form that Crookwell have only conceded 22 points in their matches to date. Bungendore were the latest victims, beaten 12-30 at Mick Sherd Oval and Bungendore are at home again this week as they welcome Boorowa to the same venue.

Braidwood will head into the match on the back of a heavy defeat themselves as they were sent packing by Jindabyne Rugby Club who won the encounter 80-5 at John Connors Oval in Jindabyne. The Bush Pigs head to Nicholls Enclosed in Round 4 for a match-up against the Gungahlin Eagles. ADFA will hope to bounce back from this setback when they meet Batemans Bay at Dowsett Oval in Round 4 with the Bay coming into the fixture having secured their second

Boorowa celebrated their Old Boys day with a 32-17 victory over the Gungahlin Bald Eagles to get back on the winning track. The club enjoyed a fantastic turnout from their former players who enjoyed the day’s rugby and the traditional post-match hospitality from the club.

Women’s Preview ROYALS EDGE GUNGAHLIN

Royals came out on top in an actionpacked match against the Gungahlin Eagles as the Women’s Division played their second round of competition last weekend. In a points-fest at Phillip Enclosed Oval, the home side Royals crossed for eight tries as they won 5042 in a fantastic contest which delighted the watching spectators. Wallaroo international and Buildcorp Super W hooker Louise Burrows was one of four Royals players who registered a brace of tries during the fixture, the rake joined on the scoreboard by Buildcorp Super W colleague wing Kiahan Bellchambers, centre Charlee Hopkins and fullback Isabel Vargas who all crossed the Eagles’ try-line twice. Ashley Bishop kicked five conversions for Royals during the victory, but the home side were pushed all the way

by their opponents who tenaciously clung on until the end and seem to have suffered little to no ill-effects from their heavy opening round loss to Tuggeranong Viqueens. The Viqueens themselves had a much tougher task of it this week as Uni-Norths Owls kept them honest in a tight and highly competitive match at Viking Park in Erindale. Winger Talei Wilson scored the Owls only points in a 5-14 loss but there were plenty of positives to be garnered from the match for the defeated side who could push the favourites Tuggeranong close throughout 2018. This weekend sees Uni-Norths head to Nicholls Enclosed to take on Gungahlin Eagles whilst the Tuggeranong Viqueens are scheduled to meet ADFA at Dowsett Oval. Royals will have the weekend off with the bye.
