EASTS TURNING HEADS WITH UNBEATEN START
Whatever is in the water over at Easts the rest of the competition are starting to wonder, as the amazing turnaround from the barren 1,000+ day winless drought is now well and truly over. Head Coach Tim Cornforth continued his team’s remarkable start to the 2018 Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup by retaining the Bob Hitchcock Territory Shield, and stunning the division, by ending Royals eighteen-match unbeaten run with a sensational 25-23 win at Griffith Oval.
Cornforth, who was Assistant Coach during Royals undefeated run to claiming the trophy, plotted the downfall of his former club with a meticulous performance that sees Easts, with two wins and a draw from their opening three matches, flying high at the top of the table. This weekend will be a further test of their renaissance as they travel to Viking Park to take on Tuggeranong Vikings. It’s been a stop-start commencement to the new season for the Vikings who, under the stewardship of new Head Coach Nick Scrivener, have two wins, a draw and a defeat on the ledger heading into this Round 5 encounter. A 29-10 away win over Queanbeyan at David Campese Oval Is nothing to be sniffed at however, and the home side will be eager to end Easts renewed sense of optimism.
This weekend’s Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round features the two teams who fought it out on Grand Final day to conclude the 2017 edition of the competition with Royals welcoming Wests to Phillip Enclosed. Whilst Royals must have expected their longunbeaten run to come to a halt at some stage, few would have thought that Easts would have been the ones to derail the juggernaut. Wins over the Vikings and the Eagles still have Royals nicely placed heading into Round 5 whilst Wests are still looking for a maiden win of 2018. A draw with Easts started their season well enough but successive defeats to Queanbeyan and Gungahlin have left Wests at the wrong end of the ladder. A victory in this match may well be the kick-start they need to ensure a return to the big showdown in August. Another side struggling for rhythm and form in the early parts of the season are Uni-Norths Owls and they’ll be targeting the visit of the Eagles to ANU North Oval to give their support something to cheer about. The Eagles came from behind to claim a much-needed morale-boosting win over Wests last time out, and with the Owls only positive points coming from a 17-17 draw with the Vikings, the visitors may fancy their chances.

The two teams last met at ANU North Oval in a Round 7 fixture played on Saturday 13 May 2017. The owls had won their first game of the season a week earlier, defeating Queanbeyan by a point at David Campese Field, and were hoping to add a second win in a row. It was the Eagles who were to have the upper hand in this battle however with loosehead prop Rawiri Karena scoring two tries in a 33-25 win for the away side.

THE LAST TIME There was an outstanding match played between Royals and Wests in Second Grade the last time the pair met in the competition, in Round 11 on Saturday 17 June last year. The home side scored five tries as they edged a thriller, eventually holding on for an impressive 3835 success. Wests had earlier won the Colts match between the teams, seeing off Royals in another exciting match, winning by 26 points to 17 to take the bonus-point win.

ADFA are the early pace-setters in the First Division First Grade competition as they boast a perfect record of four bonus-point wins in succession, the latest of which saw them sweep past Hall 41-7 last Saturday afternoon. A trip to Viking Park awaits in Round 5 against a Vikings side that has proved to be inconsistent so far this season, but who will head into the tie fresh off a 3129 away victory over Queanbeyan Whites.
ADFA SET THE PACE IN FIRST DIVISION
Cooma welcome Goulburn to Rotary Oval in what will be a real test for the home side as the visitors enjoyed a romp last time out as they blitzed a shell-shocked Wests outfit, claiming a massive 67-0 win at Poidevin Oval. Wests travel to Royals in an effort to get their season up and running, but will need to be at their very best against a Royals team that downed Easts/RMC 57-10 at Griffith Oval. Hall meet Easts/RMC at Hall Oval this weekend.
The Whites will aim to bounce back from that narrow loss when they travel to Cranfield Oval to play against Young. It’s been a difficult start to the new campaign for Young who have lost all four of their matches to date, including a Round 4 hammering at Gungahlin, the Eagles winning 55-24 at Nicholls Enclosed.
It was a good weekend for our local military colleges in First Division Second Grade as both ADFA and RMC recorded wins. ADFA whitewashed Hall to the tune of 31-0 whilst RMC edged Royals 21-19. Both clubs lead the way in this division. Vikings were big winners away to Queanbeyan Whites, claiming the points with a 29-7 success, whilst Uni-Norths smashed Cooma 62-10 at North Oval. Elsewhere, Wests Gungahlin, flying high on confidence after saw off Goulburn 45-21. that bonus point win will travel to ANU North Oval to tackle Uni-Norths Owls in what should be an extremely hard-fought match. The Owls won their first match of the season last weekend, a narrow 17-13 win over a plucky Cooma side and the home team will be desperate to add another victory to the ‘win’ column and to start to climb the ladder.
15
South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division TARALGA GO FOUR FROM FOUR IN SOUTH COAST COMPETITION Taralga made it four wins from four outings in the 2018 season as they returned from their trip to Braidwood with a full-haul of points following a 72-12 success. The visitors sixtypoint winning margin included a dozen tries with right wing Darcy Hedley dotting down a hat-trick and fullback James Marmont and scrumhalf Thomas Croker grabbing a brace each. The league leaders will be heavily backed to continue that impressive run of form when they welcome Gungahlin Eagles to Taralga Sports Field this round. Braidwood, still searching for a first win of the season, host Bungendore at Braidwood Recreation Ground hoping to break that duck. Crookwell appear to be in good shape in 2018 thus far as the Dogs racked up another victory as they saw off Yass 36-14 at Crookwell Memorial Oval. Number eight Samuel Pye crossed twice in defeat for Yass who return home this weekend with a fixture against Jindabyne awaiting them at Victoria Park. Jindabyne emerged victorious from their trip to Nicholls Enclosed in Round 4, defeating
16
the Eagles 41-21. Crookwell meanwhile make the journey to Hanging Rock to take on Batemans Bay. The home team in that encounter will be confident mood having romped to a 46-7 bonus-point win over the Australian Defence Force Academy at Dowsett Oval last Saturday morning. That was the third win from four matches for the Coastal club and they look poised to make a push for finals football this season. For ADFA, the loss was their fourth heavy set-back in a row, although the final score line was closer than their three previous outings in 2018. Boorowa are the next test for the Defence Force, they travel to the Boorowa Showground on Saturday afternoon to play the home side who enter the match having won two and lost two this term. Their latest result was a 50-22 set-back against a strong Bungendore squad at Mick Sherd Oval.
Women’s Preview OWLS AND VIKINGS CLAIM VICTORIES
Despite fielding only thirteen players, the Tuggeranong Viqueens hammered a luckless ADFA in the latest round of the Women’s competition at Dowsett Oval. A combination of factors left the Tuggeranong side short-handed but it mattered little as they scored thirteen tries in a comprehensive 83-0 victory. Paris Robinson led the way with a four try haul whilst Charlotte Horan and Steph Pollard followed Brumbies Women’s stars Remi Wilton and Michaela Leonard across the line for two tries each. Emily Sogal added nine conversions to end with eighteen points from the boot. There was also a big win for the Uni-Norths Owls Women’s team who proved too strong for Gungahlin Eagles at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval. The Owls shred eight tries amongst their playing group with Meg Taylor and Sophie Williams both grabbing a brace of well-taken scores.
Elizabeth Turner and Brumbies’ Charlene Gubb and Talei Wilson added to the tally with Tania Afamasaga landing five conversions from the tee. The Owls led 24-0 at the break and didn’t let up in the second half to win their second match of the season. There are two fixtures in the Women’s Competition set to take place this afternoon in Round 4 as the unbeaten Tuggeranong Viqueens welcome Uni-Norths Owls to Viking Park in what should be a cracker of a match. The pair only met as recently as Saturday 21 April at this venue with the Viqueens edging a testy contest by 14-5. Over at Phillip Enclosed Royals renew rivalries with Gungahlin Eagles having amasses ninetytwo points between them in their remarkable Round 2 encounter at the Woden venue. Royals won that day 50-42 and all signs point towards yet another points-fest for the watching supporters.

THE LAST TIME It was plain sailing for the Tuggeranong Vikings on the last occasion that they welcomed Easts to Viking Park in Erindale as both the Second Grade and Colts teams secured huge bonuspoint victories against Easts team’s that were struggling to compete on the field. In Second Grade, the Vikings ran up a massive 76-7 victory over their visitors and it was only marginally better in the Colts department, Vikings sauntering home with a 55-0 success.
