VIKINGS END EASTS EARLY SEASON FORM
It was another rip-roaring round of action in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup this past week with Tuggeranong Vikings, Royals and the Uni-Norths Owls all getting deserved and needed victories.
Royals got back to the form which saw them go undefeated last season, beating Wests 38-19 at Phillip Oval in a repeat of the 2017 Grand Final. Unlike that epic encounter, Royals dominated from the first whistle scoring their first try after just two minutes. Royals doubled their advantage three minutes later and the premiers had all but sealed victory inside the first five minutes. Wests competed well, getting back into the game in the in the 27th minute with a great score in the corner, but Royals were ultimately too strong, scoring another three tries on their way to a comprehensive 38-19 victory. Wests task won’t get much easier this weekend when they take on Tuggeranong at Jamison Enclosed while Royals will take on Uni-Norths who have looked much improved lately. That improvement was in full view in Round Five when the Owls outlasted the Gungahlin Eagles 22-10.
In what was a fantastically exciting game of rugby the Owls fought back from a ten-point deficit in the first half to keep the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Eagles backs had glimpses of brilliance, but the Uni defence remained stout and capitalised on mistakes made by the visitors. Owls secured their win late in spectacular fashion. Owls centre Phil Ferreira intercepted a pass on the 50-metre line and set off towards the line. The clearly exhausted centre decided to run through the Eagles fullback and gave a onehanded offload to his captain David Bennett who cruised in for the game sealing try. Sam Irwin converted to make the final score 22-10. Eagles will go back to the drawing board this week whilst on the bye. The final match of the round saw Easts incredible start hit a significant snag after Vikings sauntered to a 71-24 win at Viking Park. Tuggeranong’s huge win was marked by a four-try performance by J.P Mynhardt. Though the game finished in a rout for the Vikings, the score was 27-7 at halftime and Easts were with three of their Plus500 Brumbies stock, although Robbie Abel did score a double on his return to club rugby. Easts will look to get back to winning ways this week with the powerful contenders Queanbeyan making the trip to Griffith Oval.

The Queanbeyan Whites were the tea on top the last time the pair met at Griffith Oval, the fixture on Saturday 29 July last year seeing the Whites claim a bonus-point win with a 36-12 success. The Round 17 match already saw the visiting side pushing hard for a top four position and Ben Gordon dotted down twice for the NSW-team as the Whites ran in a total of six tries to claim the win.

In Colts on the same day, a fantastic game saw the Whites win 43-31 with lock Levi Goodwin-Shaw bagging a hat-trick of tries for the victors. Easts winger Neil Haron crossed twice in reply, but the Whites outscored their opponents seven tries to five.

The win meant Royals ended the regular season with fourteen successive wins, an unbeaten record. In the Colts match-up played earlier in the day, Royals secured a routine 20-0 win over the Owls with Benjamin Sloane and Christopher Donaldson amongst the scorers.

Table-topping ADFA remain at the head of the First Division First Grade table despite surrendering their 100%-win record last weekend when they played out a sensational 34-34 draw with Tuggeranong Vikings at Viking Park. The Academy registered five tries in the match to chalk up three points but the Vikings were tenacious and would not be denied a share of the spoils. Queanbeyan Whites are second on the ladder after five matches after they came away from a trip to Young with a 41-24 success. Fullback Luke Cochrane led the way at Cranfield Oval, grabbing a hat-trick of tries whilst prop Tyron Dargue blitzed his way over for a double. The Whites are on the road again this week, heading to Hall Oval to tackle Hall. They will meet a home team in a vibrant mood, heading into the encounter having bagged a bonus point in a convincing 42-12 win over Easts/RMC to remain in the top four. The vanquished Easts/RMC will aim to strike back when they welcome Young to Griffith Oval in Round 6.
the match against their visitors, and racked up a bonus point in comfortable fashion. Their Round 6 fixture with Uni-Norths Owls looks, on paper, to be a chance for them to keep up the pressure on ADFA and Queanbeyan at the top. Wests will try and recover from that mauling when they meet Tuggeranong Vikings at Jamison Oval. Goulburn, who meet ADFA at Poidevin Oval this weekend, and Cooma, who are at Nicholls Enclosed to play Gungahlin, took part in a 74-point thriller at Rotary Oval with Goulburn coming out on top by 38-36. Both teams crossed for six tries with Christian Parker getting two for the home team and Jordan Lees matching the feat for the visitors. Uni-Norths match with Gungahlin was abandoned at half-time with the Owls leading the Eagles 14-5 following a serious injury.
In Second Grade action, there were big wins for the Vikings (who trounced ADFA 73-0 at Viking Park), Royals (who registered a bonus-point in a 42-15 win over Wests at Phillip) and RMC who were sixty-point winners over Hall, triumphing 67-7 at Hall Oval. Elsewhere, Gungahlin Eagles were winners at ANU North, downing the Owls Royals blasted their way into finals contention 26-14 and Goulburn came back from Cooma with a huge 62-10 win over Wests at Phillip with a full haul of points, winning 48-12 at Rotary Oval. The home side were always in control of Oval.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division DOGS AND TIGERS REMAIN UNBEATEN Crookwell have kept up their unbeaten start to the South Coast Monaro Second Division season with a fifth win in succession, travelling to Batemans Bay and returning with a bonus point victory after defeating the hosts 39-26 in an entertaining encounter. The Bay recorded a bonus point in defeat, after scoring four tries, which keeps them in third place. This weekend sees the Dogs welcoming Boorowa to Crookwell Memorial Oval whilst Batemans Bay make the journey South to meet Jindabyne at John Connors Oval, a clash between the teams that currently rank three and four on the ladder. Jindabyne head into that home meeting with the Bay having suffered a set-back in their push for the top four in losing 28-12 to Yass at Victoria Park. A win for Jindabyne would have put breathing space between them and the Rams but the hosts claimed the points with number eight Samuel Pye, flyhalf Jordan Fuliavi and flanker James Davies crossing.

Taralga Tigers are still top of the division having been awarded a forfeit victory over Gungahlin Eagles in Round 5. The Eagles were unable to raise sufficient numbers to make the trip to the Taralga Sports Field and the home team were awarded a 20-0, bonus point, victory to keep them ahead of Crookwell on points difference. The Eagles may have better luck in raising a team this week when they meet Yass at Nicholls Enclosed, whilst the Tigers are on the road, visiting Mick Sherd Oval where they will come up against Bungendore. The Mudchooks meanwhile have pulled themselves into top four contention with a gritty 16-7 victory over Braidwood at Braidwood Recreation Ground last weekend. Redbacks’ Harry Shoemark, a youngster with heaps of potential, claimed a spectacular try for the home team as Braidwood battled gamely to overturn a 10-0 Mudchooks halftime lead. But the visitors nudged over a couple of second-half penalties to ensure the win. Braidwood travel to ADFA this weekend.
Women’s Preview
Tuggeranong Vikings have moved four points clear at the top of the Women’s Division table after squeezing past UniNorths owls in an engrossing encounter at Viking Park on the weekend. The top-two sides in the competition fought out an epic battle which was settled in favour of the Vikings by a solitary try, scored by Brumbies Women’s prop Peta Cox in the first-half. The Owls were in the contest throughout and fought gamely for the full eighty minutes in an effort to force their way back into the match and take home a share of the spoils, but the defences on both sides of the ball were outstanding and, try as they might, the owls could not breach the Vikings rear guard. The Royals versus Gungahlin Eagles match certainly lived up to its pre-match billing following the points-fest these two teams served up earlier in the season. This time
they shared seventy-four points but, unlike the Round 2 match which saw Royals emerge victorious by only eight-points, this time the home side were more ruthless in their defensive line, restricting the Eagles to twentytwo and claiming a thirty-point, 52-22 success. There is only one fixture scheduled for this weekend, Round 5 of the Women’s competition, as one of the matches originally slated for this date between ADFA and UniNorths Owls was played on 7th April, the first match of the season for both sides. Owls won that encounter 31-17. The game that will go ahead will take place at Phillip Oval as Royals welcome Tuggeranong Vikings. These two teams have yet to meet in the 2018 season but played out a tremendous Grand Final last term. It’s a different looking Royals outfit this time around though and the Vikings, unbeaten at the top of the standings, will be firm favourites.

THE LAST TIME A tight affair at Jamison Oval last year saw the visiting Tuggeranong Vikings claim the points from this Second Grade clash played on Saturday 15 July 2017 winning 22-15. Tuggeranong ended the season top of the ladder whilst Wests missed out on Finals, finishing sixth, despite pushing the Vikings all the way in this game. At Colts level it was far more one-sided as the Vikings showed too much class for Wests in claiming a massive 75-0 victory.
