VALE KEITH HAWKE
Keith Hawke OAM Canberra Royals RFC Patron, Life Member and foundation player passed away at 9:00 am last Saturday aged 86 after a short illness.
not only a life member of Royals but also of the ACT Rugby Union and ACT Junior Rugby Union. He had been the patron of the ACT Junior Rugby Union since 1992.
Keith played in Royals first John I Dent Cup premiership in 1954 and further premierships in 1957 and 1958. He was Royals first grade captain and one of their finest ever players. Keith coached the club to three successive premierships in 1964, 1965 and 1966 and has been the club’s patron since 1994.
Keith was a constant at Royals and a lasting connection with their history since formation in 1949. His passing leaves a massive gap probably not experienced since the death of their founder Jack Waters in 1968. He will be greatly missed but his memory will live on as long as there is Royals Rugby.
Keith was an outstanding junior representative player in the ACT and went on to play for 10 seasons for the ACT senior team as well as representing NSW Country (when ACT was part of NSW Country) and an Australian XV, in today’s terms Australia A. Keith was one of the best five eighths of his era and captained ACT against the Springboks, All Blacks and New Zealand Maori.
Keith’s family have requested that Royals members past and present form a guard of honour at the conclusion of the service on Monday.
Following his playing days Keith served as a coach, selector, manager and administrator at both junior and senior level for the ACT, NSW Country, NSW and Australia. Keith was

ROYALS SHOW CHAMPIONSHIP IDENTITY AGAINST THE OWLS
Six Rounds are in the books in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup, the latest instalment was no different to the rest, a Saturday afternoon filled with rip roaring rugby.
was Rolando on point again to break Uni hearts. The diminutive scrum half was able to rip the ball away from Uni in defence, then had the vision to find Luke Kimber for the match winning try.
A back and forth encounter at Phillip Enclosed Oval saw the Owls get the better of proceedings for much of the game against Royals in the Hahn Superdry Match of the Round.
And yet it wasn’t over. Showing incredible heart Owls dug deep and scored after the final whistle to leave themselves a chance at victory.
Pedro Rolando’s added a try to his three penalty goals for Royals to keep the home side in it as Uni were rolling in the first period, scoring two well deserved tries through James Lynch and Callum Richardson. Uni lead for 44 minutes in the first half and took just seven to reclaim the lead in the second half, young-gun number 8 Ben Love crossing for a superb score in the left-hand corner. Not to be outdone twenty minutes later Royals produced the moment of the game. Looking like his fellow country man Lionel Messi, Pedro Rolando stepped and twirled bamboozling the Uni defence before releasing his winger Liam Slater who raced away for an incredible try. The game was level with one minute to go. It
It wasn’t to be however; the conversion was missed and Royals hung on. A truly great game. With the Bob Hitchcock Shield on offer, Queanbeyan travelled to Griffith with a brooding Easts side awaiting them. Easts looked to banish the memory of the 70 points Vikings put on them early against Queanbeyan, coming out strong and opening a ten-point gap after just 15 minutes. Whites weren’t shaken however, claiming a comeback win, the final score 29-20 to Queanbeyan. The final game of first grade saw the Tuggeranong Vikings show their quality in a hard-fought win over Wests. Though Vikings eventually ran out comfortable winners, Wests were in the game till late on. Still, it was the Vikings who prevailed, the perennial favourites looking good through six rounds.

Wests laid down a marker as to their possible finals push with a 28-26 win over the Owls the last time these two sides met, on 24 June 2017. The Round 12 clash at Jamison Oval saw McDougal Medal Co-winner Bruce Kaino cross as well as young-gun number 8 Brodie Leber. Wests claimed five points in their bonus point win but the Owls late surge saw them also claim two bonus points for scoring four tries and finishing less than seven points behind.

FIRST DIVISION
The bedrock of rugby is made up of lower grade footy. The intense action of first grade would mean little without the on-looking former great, sinking a beer with a sausage sandwich in his hand, smiling after busting his gut playing third grade.
Wests suffered their second defeat in a row as the Tuggeranong Vikings went for a run around Jamison Oval taking a 22-point victory over the Wests side. Wests will try and recover in time to travel to ANU North for their clash against UniNorths and put up a fight for the victory.
With top of the table team ADFA off on a break this week, the big win in First division First grade came from the Gungahlin Eagles who flew Cooma around Nicholls Enclosed Oval in a triumphant 59-point victory, leaving no spoils for their visitors. Gungahlin will look to back up that big win over Cooma today welcoming Hall to Gungahlin Enclosed Oval.
Tuggeranong are back on the road after their win against Wests, heading for Cooma who will be hoping to put in the work to recover quickly after Gungahlin ran them around Nicholls Enclosed in a 64-5 thumping. A fresh-faced Goulburn side will meet Young at Poidevin Oval after having the weekend off. Young bounced back from their Round five loss against Queanbeyan to come out on top against Easts/RMC over the weekend. The side will be looking ahead for a repeat performance against the Goulburn side.
Hall bounced back from their 34-point loss against ADFA to sweep Queanbeyan under the rug at Hall oval 39-25 on Saturday afternoon. After this away defeat, the Whites return home to take on Royals and try and turn the tables back in their favour. In Second Grade there were big wins for Gungahlin, holding a 51-point win against Cooma After the Royals enormous victory over Wests and Queanbeyan who silenced Hall with a 34-0 in Round five, the victory they had against triumph against the home side. Elsewhere, the Uni-Norths was small in comparison. The away side, Tuggeranong Vikings bested Wests by Royals team were met with a fight from Uni- six points, 26-20. Royals held the Owls down with North who kept the margin of point difference a 7-point victory at Phillip Enclosed 19-12. smaller than Wests, only suffering a 15-point loss to the fighting Royals team.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division
The South Coast Monaro Second Division Round Six roundup sees Gungahlin, Taralga and Jindabyne celebrate big wins while Yass, Bungendore, Boorowa and Batemans Bay were left to lick their wounds and hope for better turnouts in the future. Last seasons champions Crookwell continued their superfluous form dusting off Boorowa 38-12 away from home, the Boorowa belting being played out at the local Showground. Boorowa were in fact the last side to beat Crookwell, that shock result coming in the early rounds of the 2017 season. Since then, Crookwell, haven’t lost, staggering dominance of the competition. Boorowa will hope to regather today taking on Yass at home once again while Crookwell will sit back with a bye, their quest for back to back titles well on track.
The other dominant force in the South Coast Monaro, Taralga, were almost upset by Bungendore last week, the final score 23-27. Taralga currently sit just off top of the heap
16
having also gone unbeaten in 2017. They will have to wait till Round 9 to assert themselves over the top dogs in Crookwell, a win over Batemans Bay today could see them open a gap over Crookwell. Batemans bay were handed a hiding by Jindabyne in their top four clash last week, in a result which seems to have created a clear gap between the two sides. 50 points to 8 was the finals score, a veritable drubbing for Batemans Bay, and with that trip to Taralga looming, Batemans will need to find an extra gear to hold off Yass. Yass’ hunt hit a snag in Round Six after they were beaten by Gungahlin Eagles at Nicholls Oval, 27-15. The Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup side’s fifth grade charges did the higher grades proud by getting their second win of the season in front of their first-grade supporters. Gungahlin will host Braidwood this week looking to build their case for a finals berth.
Women’s Preview
The Tuggeranong Vi-Queens have moved nine points clear at the top of the Womens Division, after claiming victory over Royals. Royals had not come up against the Vi-Queens in 2018 before last week’s showdown at Phillip Enclosed Oval, but they did play out a tremendous Grand Final last term. Royals Women’s team boasted some big names for the Tuggeranong test. Fullback Darcy Reid was a member of the Brumbies Women Buildcorp Super W side. Kasey Dragisic and Kiahan Bellchambers were also part of that squad, as was veteran of the game Louise Burrows. The Vi-Queens squad was not exactly weak either. A dominant outfit saw five Brumbies Womens players selected,
with Peta Cox, a Wallaroo at tighthead. The Vi-Queens ran out 85-12 winners. Showing off their style and structure, they ran in some beautiful tries, playing Champaign rugby from start to finish. Vi-Queens have the bye this week, giving Royals and Owls a chance to close the gap on the table toppers. Gungahlin Eagles Women welcome ADFA to Nicholls Oval after having the bye last week. Eagles ran Royals close recently but have also suffered some heavy defeats in 2018. Royals will travel to ANU Oval to take on Uni-Norths Owls, in a game which could have massive influence on table position later in the season, playoffs and finals not that far beyond the horizon.

The 31-24 slugfest took place on the 8th of July and saw Royals outscore the Whites three tries to two with Pedro Rolando’s boot adding sixteen points to the Royals tally. Connal MInerney, Leo Ngahe and Ben Johnston crossed for the visitors while tries for Soakai Tai and the superb Liam Moseley were not enough for Whites to get the win though they did claim a bonus point.
