PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade

WESTS WIN, EASTS UPSET THE EAGLES AS THE ROYALS KEEP ROLLING

With the Brumbies overseas, everyone got their fix of rugby via the Premier division here in Canberra with the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup and what a weekend it was. The top-team-tussle at David Campese Field saw a hard-fought game whilst Wests got their first win of the season. Easts took another step towards the top three by defeating Gungahlin in the Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round.

The Eagles had a great start to their game with fullback Luke Duffey drawing first blood 12 minutes in, scoring a try in the right-hand corner. Scoring was then followed up by Eramasi Kelei’s try and two penalties from Duffey and Walker. Easts however were stronger with four tries going to Jacob Able, Samuel Samuelu (2) and Jacob Angelatos who also converted twice. Gungahlin will now prepare to take on Queanbeyan who want to increase their chances of remaining in the top three after a rough loss to the Royals. The first half was certainly competitive with both sides getting over the whitewash twice, though the difference was Royals Argentinian conductor Pedro Rolando. Rolando’s try plus his magic right boot

meant Royals were up 20-10 at the break.

Rolando went on to contribute 18 of his sides 28 points, his performance cementing a 28-20 win. Royals will now be preparing for a rerun of round 1 as they face down their toughest challenger Tuggeranong in this week’s Match of the Round. Over at ANU, the Uni-Norths were left shocked after the Western Lions won in almost all divisions including Premier 1st’s. The home side had winger Panashe Kamhara put their first try down in only 25 seconds and a false sense of security hit the Owls. Wests hit back 20 minutes later forcing their way over the line in the maul after a gruelling few minutes attacking the Owls line. Uni-Norths knocked a penalty through moments later only to have Max Bode red carded a minute after the restart for an off-the-ball incident. A man down, Uni-Norths struggled to re-group and the Lions scored 4 tries in the second half, three of which were put down by flyhalf Seb Lorraway and the fourth to Andrew Parsons. Uni-Norths landed another try from Phil Ferreira but were left dazed when the full-time whistle blew to signal a 31-13 Wests victory.

- QUEANBEYAN -

It was a back and forth humdinger the last time these two sides met. Queanbeyan dominated the game for large portions spurred on by brumbies veteran Andrew Smith. Seemingly out of their hands, Gungahlin produced a stunning late comeback, scoring twice at the death, inspired by the mercurial Isaak Fines. With the score resting a 39-38, the Eagles had a kick to win it after the final hooter had sounded. It sailed wide and the Whites hung on for a close fought win.

THE LAST TIME A well contested match up in Round one saw ill-discipline from the Eagles cost them late against Queanbeyan. Two evenly matched sides, scoring two tries a piece, the game was decided in the end by the boot of Queanbeyan’s Riley Ahern. The Whites also managed to get a win in Colts, a clean sweep for them in Premier grade.

FIRST DIVISION

The road to fame in rugby starts at grass root level and leads to Premier division, but it doesn’t just happen like that. Grades 5 through 2nd are filled with the lifeblood of the sport, whether the players be young and fresh faced or getting on and trying to stay in touch with their athletic side.

The Vikings will be coming out with their teeth flashing after this week’s biggest win margin of 51-points against Cooma. With a 68-17 victory, Tuggeranong flexed hard on the Southern most side who’ve been struggling to string a win together since Round 1.

Cooma will have to straighten up before taking on the only team above Tuggeranong on the ladder; Royals. The comp leaders reminded Queanbeyan who’s boss was with 33-19 victory at David Campese Oval. Queanbeyan to their credit, were the only team to score in the first half and will have to bring that flare again this Hall had a close call whilst visiting Gungahlin weekend. with the home side doing their best to keep up with the top-four-team in a 26-19 battle. Easts/RMC will be visiting David Campese Oval Gungahlin will now be preparing to take on after missing their chance to play against ADFA someone their own size when they come in Griffith. To make up for the missed game, Easts against Goulburn at Poidevin Oval as they will want to make an impact against Queanbeyan and ADFA will go looking for trouble at ANU as challenge each other for 6th position. Uni-Norths look to improve on their surprise loss Goulburn will be looking to bag another win to Wests. after running circles around Young at home with a 17-point difference by full time. The 31- In Second Grade, Tuggeranong left a sting 14 game saw Young do their best up against against Cooma with a 44-7 game and Gungahlin the resilient team but couldn’t hold them took a convincing 34-14 victory against Hall. out. Young’s task this weekend is to host a Queanbeyan only just managed to hold on formidable looking Tuggeranong side. against the Royals with a 29-26 win at home and Wests were feeling the flow of the other grades with a 44-14 win over Uni-Norths. In the First Division First Grade comp this week, Wests came through to win away at ANU against a confused Uni-Norths team 2912. Wests will now look forward to their match against Hall and hope to hold their own.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division

The South Coast Monaro Second Division Round Six roundup sees Gungahlin, Taralga Jindabyne and Yass celebrate big wins while Bungendore, Boorowa, Batemans Bay and Batemans Bay were left to lick their wounds and hope for better turnouts in the future.

The Gungahlin Eagles continued their resurgence in the division with a resounding win over Braidwood at Nicholls Enclosed Oval. The Gungahlin side, affectionately known as the Bald Eagles or ‘Baldies’ for short shut out Braidwood, 52-0, scoring a plethora of superb tries while keeping a staunch defence for the entire game. A great result for Gungahlin as they march up the table, a home turn against ADFA is next on their agenda. Braidwood will hope to recover with an away trip to Batemans Bay this afternoon. Batemans Bay were swept aside by table topping Taralga in Round eight, the final score in a blowout win, 57 – 0 in favour of Taralga.

16

Taralga hooker Isaac Elliot and Winger Michael Bennett nabbed a brace of tries a piece while scrum-half Ben Thomas managed to score a hat-trick of tries in Taralga’s demolition of the Bay. Taralga take on Boorowa today, before a clash of giants next week when they take on Crookwell in the competitions most anticipated game of the season. Crookwell had the bye this week but will be back in action today at home against Jindabyne. Jindabyne managed to hold off Bungendore, 36-34 in a real nail-biter in Round 8. Yass are coming off a tight win over Boorowa last week and will be full of confidence today. Yass ran in four tries from Sam Pye, James Davies, Jordan Fulivai and Brody Anderson but the difference on the day was the boot of Mark Dowling. The left winger kicked two penalties and three conversions to get his side over the line.

Women’s Preview

The Women’s division had just one fixture last week but boy was it a nail-biter. The defending champions Royals scaped by the much-improved Uni-norths Owls girls 5-0 in a match up that could well be repeated when finals time comes around.

Tuggeranong face Gungahlin this week, a repeat of Round one when the ViQueens put 116 points on the Eagles without reply.

It was the first time the two sides had met since their preliminary final clash in 2017. That game was a much higher scoring affair, though it was equally tense, Royals prevailing 33-29 at Viking Park.

ACT Womens rugby got a boost this week with the news that the Brumbies Women will be playing an exhibition match against Fiji Women, Monday 11 June – the Queens Birthday Holiday – at ANU North Oval.

Royals Women’s win means they now sit two points in front of the Owls, with the Tuggeranong ViQueens way out ahead on 27 match points, nine more than Royals.

This is the first time that the Fijian Rugby Union is sending a women’s 15s team to Australia, which is part of their build up towards their test tournaments at the end of the year.

The other game will see ADFA host Royals at Dowsett Oval.
