VIKINGS DRAW EVEN WITH PREMIERS ROYALS

It was a double header weekend of rugby in Round 8 of the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup as Vikings stole the headlines with a comprehensive win over Royals at Viking Park.

Royals seemingly had stopped the rot in the 68th minute, pushing the score to 21-13 with a well worked try from the base of the scrum. It would be there final points of the afternoon.

In a repeat of the opening fixture of the 2018 season, the potential grand-final teaser was close for large periods of the contest. Indeed it was Royals who struck first, burly winger Liam Slater muscling his way over on the 20-minute mark, which Pedro Rolando duly converted.

A ten-minute finishing flourish stunned Royals. Vikings scored three tries in quick succession, one each from Isaac Thompson, J.P Mynhardt and Sione Taulan and suddenly, the game was over. An incredible win for Tuggies, though Royals will feel they will have enough to compete should they match up come finals time.

Vikings responded through the boot of Brendon Taueki, but conceded another just before halftime, this time Matt Cole the Royals flyhalf being the one to dot down for the visitors. At 14-3 with halftime looming, things didn’t look great for Vikings. However, with urgency to get back into the game, Vikings were battering down the door just before halftime and it finally broke open when that man Taueki crossed over in the corner for the Vikings opening try, the score 8-14 at the break. Vikings took another step towards the lead just after half time, with – you guessed itfullback phenom Brendon Taueki getting the five pointer, his ninth of the year.

In the only other game, Queanbeyan Whites kept on pace with the top-two sides by hanging on against the Gungahlin Eagles at Nicholls Oval despite going down to 14 men with twenty minutes to play. Teenage star Will Goddard scored 21 of the Whites 28 points, a try, two conversions and four penalties to get his side over the lien in a humdinger of a battle. With just three points in it at the end, Eagles were left devastated after club Legend Rocky Ilolahia scored three tries on the day he made his 100th first grade appearance for the club. Gungahlin wanted the win, but Queanbeyan showed great composure and will to win as they outlasted the Eagles, 28-21 in yet another belter between these two uncompromising teams.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division

Crookwell have continued their undefeated start to the South Coast Monaro Second Division season with a fifteen-point win against Jindabyne in Round 8 50-35. Crookwell will meet Taralga at home this weekend for an exciting top of the table tussle.

Gungahlin will travel to meet Bungendore at Mick Shred Oval. Bungendore looking to recover for their return home after a 6-point loss to Yass last weekend. Looking forward to a tough match against Gungahlin who were victorious against ADFA 85-0 last weekend continuing their rising through the division. ADFA will continue to travel this weekend and meet Jindabyne at John Connors Oval. Jindabyne and ADFA are both

16

looking to recover from their losses from last weekend and return to the field on Saturday with their sights set on a win. Boorowa will travel to Bateman’s Bay this weekend after their loss to Taralga in Round 8 43-28. Bateman’s Bay will put up a fight at home after an exciting 61-7 victory in Round 8 against Braidwood. The final clash for the South Coast Monaro Second Division this weekend is Braidwood and Yass. Yass travel to meet Braidwood at home and will look to continue their winning form after a 25-19 triumph against Bungendore last weekend. Braidwood looking to improve and find a win after their devastating loss to Bateman’s Bay last weekend.

Women’s Preview

The Tuggeranong Viqueens juggernaut will be out to continue its inexorable march towards the ACT Women’s Premier Division Finals when they travel to Dowsett Oval to take on ADFA this weekend. The Viqueens have won all six matches this season with four bonus points to lead the ladder by nine points from Royals, who have the bye this weekend. There was another big win for the Tuggeranong outfit last weekend when they thrashed Gungahlin Eagles 52-0 at Viking Park, the fourth time this season that they have managed to rack up over fifty points in a match, a statistic that proves just how hard it will be for the Defence Force to derail their winning run. The teams met at Dowsett Oval earlier in the season with the Viqueens claiming a huge 83-0 victory, despite

playing short-handed for the entire duration of the match, and the visitors will be heavily favoured to repeat the trick on Saturday afternoon. ADFA can be doughty opponents however, and will certainly not roll over. Over at ANU North third meets fifth as the Uni-Norths Owls welcome Gungahlin Eagles to their home venue hoping to keep in touch with the league leaders as they currently sit just three points behind second-placed Royals, with this match being their game in hand. The Owls enjoyed a handsome win last team these teams played winning 50-5 at Gungahlin Enclosed. That would suggest that the Owls will be favourites to succeed again, but the Eagles will be bidding to get their first win of the season and will no doubt prove to be a tough proposition for the home side.
