CAN THE DOGS BITE TIGERS AGAIN? Grand Final time in the South Coast Monaro Second Division sees the two teams we probably expected locking horns in the big dance as the Crookwell Dogs and Taralga Tigers meet in the showdown. It’s the fourth time the pair will meet in the current campaign with the Tigers leading the series 2-1 but having tasted a shock defeat in their last meeting. That came in the Qualification Final a fortnight ago when the Dogs travelled to their rivals and emerged triumphant, winning a tight fixture by just two points, the final ledger reading 14-12 in their favour. Reilly Marin crossed for the Dogs’ only try with the boot of Liam Jones adding the rest of their points. Incredibly, for such a free-scoring side, the Tigers were unable to breach the Dogs’ hugely-impressive defence, which held firm throughout and limited the Premiers to just four penalties from the reliable boot of Joel Croker. The Tigers have previous at this venue however, they demolished the Dogs 46-17 in their Round 16 match earlier this season, with a seven-tries to three demolition of their opponents. Seven different players forced their way onto the scoresheet on that

occasion, as the Tigers flexed their muscles against an opponent that were surprisingly erratic for much of 2019. Indeed, the Dogs lost six matches in total, twice as many as the previous season, but still managed to force their way into second place on the final table ahead of a dramatic final’s series. There’s potentially a vulnerability in the Tigers that, perhaps, hasn’t been evident in recent years, back-to-back losses to Jindabyne Bushpigs in the final round of the regular season followed by that loss to the Dogs, telling a rather unheard-of statistic in the town that’s used to winning. One thing is for sure though, it won’t rattle the Tigers and they will be supremely confident they can claim another South Coast Monaro crown. But every dog has its day, as the old cliché goes, so maybe this weekend is the turn of Crookwell? They have the players, they have the home support, they have the ability. Can they take that psychological edge of having beaten Taralga before and turn it into silverware or will the Tigers roar once more?
