1st v 2nd Qualification Final Vikings v Royals

It’s said, there are only two certainties in life; death and taxes. For fans of the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup in 2018, Vikings playing Royals in the Major Semi-Final was a third. Since they opened the season against each other, these two titans of ACT & Southern NSW Rugby have been on a collision course, destined to be pitted against each other in the knockout stages, with a place in the Grand-Final the prize on offer this time around. Viking enter as top seed, though Royals have regular season bragging rights. The BlueBaggers won two of the three meetings this season, the first of those coming in the aforementioned season opener at Viking Park. Royals were victorious then, though it was close, 31-32. Vikings retaliated in Round eight, claiming a 34-21 statement win, though again, the game was far tighter than that score line suggests. Royals beat Vikings in the series decider in Round 14, coming from behind to snatch a 19-15 victory. However, the significance of the above is meaningless in terms of expected outcome for their playoff meeting. If anything, it simply points to how evenly matched these two squads are and that either can knock-off

the other on any given day. Royals are not the juggernaut of 2017, yet they still have enough firepower to win back to back premierships, no question. Vikings have been this year’s most consistent side, though they do have moments of vulnerability. It’s anyone’s game. Whichever side executes better on the day will win, and with a host of Brumbies in both sides, the quality on show will be top drawer. The wrinkle in this game of course is that no matter what happens, both teams will live to fight another day. The victor advances straight to the grandfinal while the loser will play the winner of UniNorths, Gungahlin in the preliminary final next week. It’s not the ideal route to a premiership, but it’s not one and out. That assurance gives both squads the freedom to go play. Go and win, earn a week off to prepare for the GF knowing even if you lose, you’ll have another shot. That being said, this is huge. Vikings know all too well how tough it can be to play that extra game, having exited at the prelim’ final stage in 2017. The Blue Baggers know how to win, they won this fixture last year on their way to a title. Everyone has been waiting for this. It’s Goliath v Goliath, Vikings v Royals to go one step closer to the promise land. Team-Lists on page 12 Minor Semi Final Preview on page 9

Whites v Vikings

Vikings v Whites

The dominant Queanbeyan Whites will be out to book their place in the Premier Division Second Grade Grand Final this weekend when they meet Tuggeranong Vikings at Viking Park on Saturday afternoon. The Whites finished fifteen points clear of the Vikings on the competition ladder and had the wood on their opponents during the regular season, racking up three wins from the three encounters played. Their dominance of the division was such that the Whites only suffered one loss all season, a Round 16 set-back to the Royals, but that has hardly slowed their progress. A confident 38-24 defeat of the Vikings in Round 4 has been followed by a 22-19 win in Round 9 at David Campese Field and an 18-12 slog at Viking park in Round 13. Both sides know their way to the try-line having garnered four-try bonus points at a rate of knots during the season and, with similar points for and against records, this should be another tight battle. Will it be fourth time lucky for Vikings?

4

You could almost replicate the Second Grade Major Semi-Final preview for Colts by just switching the team names such has been the Tuggeranong Vikings and Queanbeyan Whites tête-à-tête at the top of the ladder for most of the season. In this divisions it has been the Vikings who have held the upper hand, winning twice and drawing once in their three meetings with the Whites, a situation that allowed the men from Tuggeranong to finish top of the ladder, elven points ahead of their rivals. The Vikings ticked off the win in the victory column in Round 4, claiming a six-point 28-22 success, before the Round 9 stoush ended with honours even at 12-12. It wasn’t until Round 13 when one side really got to grips with the other, the Vikings running out 27-12 winners in the familiar territory of Viking Park. There was enough in all three games to suggest the Whites had the nous and ability to upset the apple cart. If they can, a Grand Final place awaits.

3rd v 4th Elimination Final Owls v Eagles

Uni-Norths and Gungahlin must be getting the feeling of Déjà vu this week. Usually when preparing for a game of this magnitude, teams would be sprawling through old footage, trying to learn something about the other side to get a competitive edge. Having played each other just last week, The Owls and Eagles might have a little less film study to do on this occasion. It was a bazar final twenty minutes at Nicholls Oval last Saturday. With a bonus-point win secured for the Eagles which launched them above Queanbeyan into the play-offs, both teams went through the motions, perhaps not wanting to show their hand for the following week. I’m not sure many secrets are left between them though. That comprehensive victory for Gungahlin was their first over the Owls this year, the Eagles lost both of the other matchups. The first of those came in Round five. Owls were exceptional on that day, particularly in the second-half where they came from behind to win comfortable in the end, 22-10. That outing came and went without much noise. That couldn’t be said for the second meeting.

A torrid affair at ANU North Oval, Uni’s performance was overshadowed by the Eagles discipline woes. Gungahlin had two players sent off and another three put in the bin, at one stage being down to 13-men. Somehow, the Eagles fought back in that game, and even had a chance to win the contest despite their deficit of players. Ironically, that Round 9 slugfest was a catalyst of sorts for both sides. The Owls have become known as ‘Giant Killers’, as they beat Vikings and Royals on route to a third-place finish and the Eagles regrouped to win four of their five remaining games, the last of those being the 47-5 thumping of the Owls on the final day of the regular season, to leapfrog Queanbeyan into fourth. For the Owls, the loss to Gungahlin will serve as a wake-up call. The reality is, this Uni-Norths parliament are good enough to win it all. With a strong pack and an excellent kicking game, the Owls have the makings of a play-off ready outfit. The Eagles have form, and their finish to the season suggests they may be 2018’s Wests. A side bagged full of confidence, ready to shock a few in the finals. The question is, was last week a fluke or are the Eagles that good? Did the Owls have an off day, or have they reached their ceiling. The former is more likely, Sunday will be the proof. Team-Lists on page 13 Major Semi Final Preview on page 4

SECOND GRADE & COLTS: Minor Semi Final Preview

Second Grade: Minor Semi-Final

Colts: Minor Semi-Final

Royals v Owls

Eagles v Owls

Royals and Uni-Norths Owls will lock horns for the third time this season when the duo meet up for a spot in the Preliminary Final in the much-anticipated Minor Semi-Final at Viking Park on Sunday afternoon. For the victors there’s the chance to move a step closer to the big dance whilst for the vanquished the season will come to an abrupt, and untimely, end. This is a fascinating contest, not least because Royals ended the season above the owls on the ladder and yet have lost both previous meetings to their peers. The Owls were big 34-7 victors in Round 6 at Phillip Enclosed Oval and repeated the feat in Round 15, albeit in a much tighter affair, claiming the points in a 15-7 success at ANU North Oval. Both teams have proven inconsistent at times, with eight wins and six losses apiece, but with their season on the line could serve up a veritable classic. Expect plenty of commitment and desire, and a fair amount of class, from two teams eager to take the next step.

On paper at least, the Colts Minor Semi-Final would seem to be stacked in favour of the Gungahlin Eagles, the team that finished the campaign in third, when they take on the fourthplaced Uni-Norths Owls at Viking Park on Sunday morning. The Eagles were thirteen points better off than the Owls at the end of the regular season competition having ended the campaign with 57 points to the Owls 44. There’s encouraging signs for those of a Gungahlin persuasion from last week’s match at Nicholls Enclosed as well as the Eagles romped to a huge 59-19 success. Allied to an earlier 31-26 win at ANU North Oval in Round 9 and all signs point to an Eagles win. But wait, there’s the anomaly in this picture and that was in Round 5 when the Owls, in a sterling performance, saw off the Eagles 21-7 which just goes to show that they have the quality to cause the upset. Finals football is a fickle beast and form during the year often goes out the window. For the sake of their season the Owls will hope that this is the case.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division With two rounds remaining in the South Coast Monaro Second Division the race for the Finals places has taken another twist as Bungendore moved into the top four at the expense of Yass following another exhilarating and unpredictable round of matches in the regional competition. Bungendore currently hold a four-point lead over Yass with the two teams set to meet in the final round of the season. By that stage the Rams will hope to be right back on the coat-tails of, or even back above, the Mudchooks as Yass host Gungahlin Eagles, a winnable match on paper, whilst Bungendore make the road trip to Taralga Sports Fields to meet the Division leaders. The rams were beaten 31-14 by Jindabyne last time out whilst Bungendore saw off Braidwood 33-18 at Mick Sherd Oval. At the top of the ladder Taralga and Crookwell continue to set the pace with the tigers taking another step towards finishing first as they were awarded a 20-0 forfeit victory over the Eagles. The Crookwell Dogs were in action

and they kept up the pressure on the tigers with a convincing 41-8 win over Batemans Bay at Crookwell Memorial Oval, a result that ends the Bay’s chances of Finals football. Batemans Bay could still have a major say in the make-up of the top four though as they welcome Jindabyne to Hanging Rock in Round 17. Jindabyne currently sit third on the ladder, just two points clear of Bungendore, and will be acutely aware of the possible banana-skin of a challenge that will be presented by the Boars, particularly on their own patch. Two other matches are scheduled for this weekend with Braidwood Recreation Ground hosting the clash between Braidwood and ADFA whilst Crookwell Memorial Oval is the venue for the Dogs meeting with Boorowa. Games, and therefore time, is running out for everyone in what has been an intense and exciting set of fixtures from week to week. There’s still every chance that we will see many more bumps in the road before the finals series kicks In around mid-August.

FIRST DIVISION PREVIEW

First Division First Grade

First Division Second Grade

Major: ADFA v Tuggeranong Vikings Minor: Goulburn Dirty Reds v Royals

Major: Tuggeranong Vikings v RMC Minor: Queanbeyan Whites v ADFA

The First Division First Grade Semi-Final line-up was finally confirmed last week as the top four all won meaning that Hall, who ended the season fifth, were the unlucky side to miss out. The Major Semi-Final will see the divisions two stand-out sides taking to the field at Viking park as ADFA meet Tuggeranong Vikings. If the Round 5 meeting between the teams is anything to go by, then we should be in line for a rip-roaring contest. That match ended 34-34 and a repeat of such drama would not go amiss once more. The winner, of course, goes through to the Grand Final with the defeated side facing off with the winner of the Minor Semi-Final in next week’s last-chance Preliminary showdown. Goulburn Dirty Reds and Royals are the two meeting in that encounter with the Dirty Reds having downed Royals all the way back in Round 2, a thrilling contest that ended 3126 to the home side at Poidevin Oval. This grade often throws up some excellent rugby and there is every chance we will get two ripsnorting fixtures this weekend.

There’s much to like about the brace of fixtures that make up the First Division Second Grade semi-finals with only six points separating the top five in this division. Indeed, Gungahlin Eagles were unlucky to miss out with 56 points, the same as fourth placed ADFA. Tuggeranong Vikings meet RMC in the Major Semi-Final having had the better of the meeting in late June, winning by a comprehensive 40-19 scoreline in Round 11. RMC will need to find an answer to the vikings free-flowing style if they are to succeed and reach the Grand Final at the first attempt. Meanwhile, the Minor SemiFinal sees Queanbeyan Whites meeting ADFA. The Whites won the Round 9 match, 34-22 at David Campese Field and they will be confident they can repeat the trick. ADFA only finished a couple of competition points behind the Whites on the table however and are sure to be a tough proposition. Finals football beats to its own drum and who knows what the outcome might be?

WOMEN’S DIVISION SEMI-FINAL PREVIEW

Major Semi-Final: Vikings v Owls

Minor Semi-Final: Royals v Eagles

Semi-Final time in the Women’s Division will see the competitions top two teams face-off for a place in the Grand Final as Tuggeranong Viqueens clash with the Uni-Norths Owls at Viking Park, Field 2, on Saturday afternoon. The unbeaten Viqueens appear to hold all the aces heading into the match with their perfect season still possible after another convincing victory in the final round of regular season action, a 49-12 trouncing of Royals. What is interesting here though is the form between these teams when they have faced-off in the regular season. Whilst the Vikings have won all three of the games played the combined victory margin of twenty-one points, suggests a tough old scrap may be on the cards. Indeed, that margin is somewhat distorted by the Vikings claiming a 14-5 win in the first head-to-head of the season in Round 2. Subsequent matches have been much closer affairs as the Vikings won by a solitary try, 5-0, at Viking Park in Round 4 and 15-10 at ANU North in Round 1. Maybe it’s the owls turn to take the honours? A Grand Final spot awaits the winner.

It’s win or bust for the Royals and Gungahlin Eagles when they meet in the Minor Semi-Final at Viking Park twenty-four hours after the top two go into battle. A place in next weekend’s semi-final is the honour that awaits the victor and the unenviable task of taking on either the Viqueens of Owls for a place in the decider. With the defeated side seeing their 2018 campaign ending, neither side will be prepared to give an inch. Royals head into the contest as the favourites having finished higher on the ladder, a healthy points margin ahead of the Eagles, and having won all three matches played between the pair. There have been plenty of points in those games, the first two matches providing a feast of running rugby as Royals won 50-42 at Phillip Enclosed in Round 2 and 52-22 at the same venue a couple of weeks later. The latest of the trio of games was a more prosaic affair as the Eagles completed a hat-trick of wins with a 24-7 Round 12 success at Nicholls Enclosed. They’ll be confident of making it four from four, but Gungahlin will no doubt, have plenty to say about that.
