EASTS END LONG WINLESS DROUGHT
The big story from Round 1 of the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup was Easts’ ending their 1,106-day winless-drought, with their 22-20 success over Uni-Norths Owls in the Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round sparking scenes of jubilation at Griffith Oval. Prior to this positive result, Easts had lost forty matches in a row and shipped over 2,000 points so it’s understandable that when flyhalf Jacob Angelatos bagged a conversion of George Morseu’s matchwinning try that the Easts players, officials and supporters were in dreamland. What’s important for Tim Cornforth and his team now is to build momentum off the back of that result, starting with the visit to Jamison Oval and the challenge of 2017 beaten Grand Finalists Wests. It was a remarkable tale of resoluteness in the face of adversity and capped a memorable first trio of fixtures in a competition that celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2018. Incredibly, three matches were decided by a point’s aggregate of only four. Champions Royals went undefeated throughout the 2017 season but they can hardly have been pushed much harder
than they were last weekend at Viking Park where a fast-finishing Tuggeranong Vikings threatened to overturn a 14-32 deficit into the most unlikely of victories. Earlier, Royals had shown their class coming from 14-3 down at half-time. Royals get the week off in Round 2 whilst the Vikings travel to Gungahlin Enclosed to take on Gungahlin Eagles. The Eagles had their own disappointment to deal with in Round 1 as they were pipped in an absolute thriller at David Campese Field in Queanbeyan. The visitors crossed for halfa-dozen tries but, ultimately, fell to a nerveshredding 39-38 defeat as the Whites got their season off to a flying start. The Queanbeyanbased side will be hoping they have a less nailbiting finale to their fixture with Uni-North Owls at ANU North Oval. In premier Division Second Grade fixtures last weekend, there were opening day wins for Uni-Norths (26-7 over Easts), Vikings (53-26 over Royals) and Whites (26-22 over Eagles). And the same trio of clubs were successful at Colts as Uni-Norths (24-17 over Easts), Vikings (49-19 over Royals) and Whites (12-10 over Eagles) got their 2018 campaigns off to a winning start.

THE LAST TIME A semi-final showdown marks the last time Owls and Whites met in Second Grade with the Whites ending the Owls season by recording a 17-13 win at Viking Park in the semi-final last season. That was ample revenge for Queanbeyan who had been heavily beaten, 32-5, in the regular season match at ANU North Oval in Round 11. There was a role reversal in Colts as Whites won their semi-final clash 31-17 having also won the ANU North fixture, 44-5, earlier that year.

BOB HITCHCOCK TERRITORY SHIELD
There’s a new piece of silverware up for grabs during the 2018 Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup as teams compete for the Bob Hitchcock Territory Shield throughout the duration of the regular season of competition. This format will see whichever team holding the Bob Hitchcock Territory Shield at the end of the season proclaimed the winners and having their name engraved on the trophy before the recommencement of the challenge in 2019. Already the competition for the Shield has been fierce with the inaugural match allowing Easts to become the maiden victors. Easts put the Shield up for Challenge in their Round 4 match on Saturday 28 April, when they welcome the reigning Champions Canberra Royals to Griffith Oval, one of a trio of matches set for that week alongside Queanbeyan Whites against Tuggeranong Vikings and Gungahlin Eagles versus Wests. So, just who is Bob Hitchcock?
For those who may be unaware Bob Hitchcock OAM is an ACT Rugby Life Member as well as being a Life Member of the Queanbeyan Whites club. He has been a significant
8
contributor to ACT Rugby Union as a player, coach and volunteer throughout many years of service to the game in Canberra and the surrounding region. His extensive coaching career included several ACT Representative Teams, the National U21s, and the Emerging Wallabies. Bob is also a huge advocate of the Women’s game and was coach of the Australian Women’s team from 1995-1998, a stint that included the 1998 Women’s Rugby World Cup. He was later Assistant Coach of the national team in 2001-2002, being part of the squad that travelled to the 2002 Women’s Rugby World Cup as well as coaching the Australian Women 7’s side. Awarded ACT Coach of the Year on two occasions, Hitchcock’s other extensive involvement in Rugby, both internationally and locally saw him inducted into the ACT Sports Hall of Fame and subsequently be awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012. A quite incredible career and a lifetime devoted, mostly as a volunteer, to the game he loves.

FIRST DIVISION
Queanbeyan Whites stamped a statement of intent on the First Division First Grade competition with an opening day hammering of Champions Gungahlin Eagles at David Campese Field. The Whites roared to a 44-17 success over the Eagles who were second best in most departments and were left licking their wounds after a chastening experience. They’ll aim to bounce back in emphatic fashion when they welcome Tuggeranong Vikings to Gungahlin Enclosed Oval in Round 2 in a re-match of last year’s showdown. Vikings will themselves be looking for a first win of 2018 after going down in their first match of the season, beaten 19-12 by Royals at Viking Park. Centre Jason Swain crossed for a double for the victorious Royals with flanker Jonathan Curran also scoring. Winger James Thompson claimed a brace of tires for Cooma in their exhilarating 32-27 win over Young at Rotary Oval and the New South Walians will face a test of their credentials when they clash with ADFA in Cooma in Round 2. The Defence Force team romped to a 43-10 success over Wests in their season opener.
STATEMENT OF INTENT FROM WHITES
Mitchell Greig crossing twice, alongside further five-pointers from Sam Oliver, James Murphy and Jacob Betts. Murphy ended with thirteen points having knocked over four conversions. Hall travel to Young this weekend. Elsewhere, nothing could separate Easts/RMC and Uni-Norths Owls with the teams sharing a 14-14 draw. The Owls host the Whites in Round 2 whilst Easts/RMC travel to play Wests at Jamison Oval. There were five equally exciting clashes as the First Division Second Grade competition got underway with Champions Tuggeranong Vikings beaten in their first match defending the crown, Royals emerging victorious by 21-14 at Viking Park. Fellow 2017 finalists Queanbeyan Whites had a better start to their campaign, seeing off Gungahlin Eagles 2521. The Eagles meet the Vikings at Gungahlin Enclosed in Round 2 with the Whites travelling to ANU to tackle the Uni-Norths-Owls.
The Owls will be hoping for better luck from that fixture after failing to land a blow against RMC at Griffith Oval, the military College easing to a convincing 26-0 success. There were also opening day wins for ADFA, who saw off Wests in a thriller 37-33, and Hall, who Hall meanwhile secured a five-try bonus squeaked past Goulburn 15-14. point win over Goulburn at Hall Oval, flanker

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division HUGE WIN FOR YASS, CROOKWELL ROLL ON There was a huge win for Yass in the opening round of the South Coast Monaro Second Division competition as they inflicted a 76-0 hammering on ADFA at the Defence Force’s own Dowsett Oval. The visiting team were in simply irresistible form for most of the encounter with ADFA, claiming a round dozen tries with left wing Mark Dowling leading the way with a hattrick. Four other players, Michael Regan, Samuel Pye, Alex Fry and James Carter all racked up a double. Champions Crookwell, who thrashed Taralga in the Grand Final last season, started the defence of their crown in some style, crushing Gungahlin 49-5 at Crookwell Memorial Oval. The win does nothing to dispel the notion that they’ll be pushing for a repeat performance in 2018. Crookwell travel to Braidwood in Round 2 whilst Yass are also on the road, heading to Taralga. The latter fixture should be an intriguing prospect as Taralga started their season
16
in fine fettle, seeing off Jindabyne 33-7 at Taralga Sports Field, flanker Thomas Croker having a day to remember by scoring three tries. Harrison Grashorn and James Marmont ensured a bonus point win for the home team. The vanquished Jindabyne will look to start again when they set off for Boorowa but will there meet an in-form home side. Boorowa served notice of their 2018 credentials by registering over half a century of points in a 55-14 drubbing of Braidwood at the Boorowa Showground to commence their push for finals football and they will fancy their chances of going two from two despite suffering home and away losses to Jindabyne in the 2017 edition. Boorowa made the semi-finals last season and will be keen to get at least that far again. The Round 2 fixtures are rounded out by Bungendore hosting ADFA and Gungahlin welcoming Bateman’s Bay to Nicholls Enclosed Oval. Batemans’s Bay won their Round 1 match against Bungendore down the Coast with a 24-12 win at Hanging Rock.
Women’s Preview COMPETITION SET TO GET UNDERWAY
This weekend sees the official opening round of the Women’s Rugby competition even though, for two teams at least, the 2018 competitive action has already begun. That’s because ADFA and Uni-Norths Owls jump-started their campaign a week earlier by playing a scheduled Round 5 clash at Griffith Oval. That turned out to be an inspired decision for the Owls who got their season off to the best possible start by recording a 31-17 win over the Defence Force outfit. The Owls will now take the week off before returning to the field in Round 2 when they meet Tuggeranong Vikings at Viking Park on Saturday 21 April. By then the Vikings will have got their season underway after travelling to meet Gungahlin Eagles at Nicholls Enclosed Oval. The Vikings, who were
beaten Grand Finalists in 2017, thrashed the Eagles 85-0 at this venue last season and followed that up with an 81-0 trouncing at Viking Park. Understandably, they are heavy favourites for the win. The other match that will start the campaign will see the Champions Royals head to Dowsett Oval and a tussle with ADFA. Both these teams had an up-anddown 2017 with Royals, of course, stripped of all their competition points but making the last four shakedown due to ADFA’s inability to field a team in the finals. That lifeline allowed their star-studded team the chance to go all the way and they duly obliged with a memorable, and heart-stopping, 29-22 win over the Vikings on Grand Final day. There may be, therefore, some unfinished business for ADFA and a cracking match is anticipated.

THE LAST TIME Wests claimed a league victory over Easts in the 2017 regular season fixture between the teams in Second Grade, winning 56-8 on Saturday 1 April, Round 2. The bonus-point win was as comprehensive as the scoreline suggested. It was less straightforward in Colts however as Easts registered a three-try 22-14 upset win as Liam Bilston, Simon Aiono and Justin Sproul crossed. Wests would end the season bottom of the Colts ladder with Easts finishing fifth.
