THE CHAIR STUDY THE ORIGINAL CHAIR The proposal started with one chair that was given to us to be photographed and to be represented in 2D detailed drawings (showing textures and damage by use of the chair). This chair was basically made of wood and leather and we focused on representing the texture of these two materials. On the second part of the work (page 03), we had to dismantle the chair and discover how it was built. A photo session to register the process was made and later we made a composition photo with all the elements of the chair displaced on the floor. The third part was to create a new object (page 06) using the chair’s elements. We had a lot of wood to work on and we did a lot of testing (page 05) with the materials, mixing them with plaster and also trying to discover how they could shape. All the tests resulted on the idea to creat a luminaire as our new object and we did a booklet to show the process of transforming the chair components on it and the possible shapes the luminaire could has.

THE CHAIR STUDY DISMANTLING PROCESS The dismantle process was quite surprising. We were expecting to be easier to separete each part of the chair, although we find to many pin keeping the parts together and a lot of clue on the joints.

THE CHAIR STUDY DISMANTLING PROCESS As a final work on the second part of the work, we made a composition photo with all the elements of the chair displaced on the floor. The idea here was to create a nice composition with all the elements found on the dismantling. After some tests on differents ordenations, this is the result.

THE CHAIR STUDY TESTING PROCESS The third part started with the testing process with the elements we had dismantled. We had a lot of wood and some foam from the back seat, so we decided to mix the foam and the sawdust from the wood with plaster to create a rigid element from a malleable element. The result was these three pieces on the left, both on the top has foam and sawdust, the back one has just sawdust. The tests with wood were really about how to make a rigid element on a flexible one, just the opposite we made with the malleanble elements. The idea was to make the material bendable. So we focused on making gaps on the wood and on finding the best way to make it flexible, durable and fixable. The big photo is the composition of the whole testing process. On the right bottom are the first tested woods, on the left bottom the testings with plaster and on top the shapes we could create and the way we found to fix the shape with wedges (top left).

The concept behind the making has been a ained by the components that had been found whilst dismantling the chair, the key element within had been the wood as this helped us make something that had diversity within the method implemented which was the kerf cu ng. Consequently the aim was to create a furniture, which was adjustable with the use of wedges in order to ensure the comfort of a person, which would also accomplish their desire in shape/form.

LITTLE KLONDYKE PROJECT THE AREA The 480 remaining Victorian terraced homes, commercial proper es and including the Welsh Presbyterian Church used to consist the Li le Klondyke area. The idea is to with the community involvement campaign against the unnecessary demoli on of this proper es and refurbish and renew the area.

The ini al idea was to map the area and focus on one point of interest to show on this map and on a analy cal drawing. Also we sould make a photography serie of something that took our a en on. Later we had to decide what programme we were going to idealize for the area to improve it and make it a place people would want to use again.

LITTLE KLONDYKE PROJECT ANALYTICAL DRAWING The drawing was made (as the photography shoo ng sequence on page 09) to represent the domes c character the houses s ll have even being desoccupied as they are now.

LITTLE KLONDYKE PROJECT BRIEF The uses map showed there is a lot of schools surrounding the area, some really close to Li le Klondyke zone. When visi ng the site it was possible to see a lot of children crossing the area to go to school or come back. Although the residen al character s ll clear on the whole zone, to a ract people to use again the are we need an a rac ve. So the idea is to transform the area on a centre of music. The houses will be all maintained, but refurbished. The only excep on will be about the Church block that is going to fully demolished and a square will be built on the place. The houses are connected on the interior of the block by an private sidewalk. So the music school will work integrated, but keeping it privacy and having one or two entrances by block. The houses will need to receive acous c treatments on its walls and oors. Some of the houses will be reserved for shelter guest music teachers, this will be refurbished, but for sure the residen al character will be reestablished.
