Das Herausgeber-Team: Christoph Georgii, Jahrgang 1977, studierte Kirchenmusik, Klavier, Jazzpiano sowie Orgelimprovisation an der Hochschule für Evangelische Kirchenmusik in Bayreuth. Wirkte als Kirchenmusiker in Bad Kreuznach. Lehrtätigkeit an den Musikhochschulen in Bayreuth und Würzburg für Jazz-Rock-Pop-Piano, liturgisches Orgelspiel und schulpraktisches Klavierspiel. Seit 2008 ist er Beauftragter für Popularmusik der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Baden. Uwe Steinmetz, Jahrgang 1975, studierte Saxophon und Musiktheorie in Berlin, Bern, Indien und Boston. Arbeitet freischaffend als Komponist, Saxophonist und Dozent in Europa, Indien, Äthiopien, Korea und den USA und erhielt nationale und internationale Auszeichnungen. Veröffentlichte bisher 14 CDs unter eigenem Namen in Deutschland und den USA und spielt auf zahlreichen anderen CD-Einspielungen als Sideman. Leitet das internationale ökumenische Netzwerk «Crescendo Jazz» aus christlichen Berufsmusikern. This collection links the tradition of church music with the avant-garde in an exciting way and closes the inveterate, lamentable gap felt by many. Treasures of the past, rich in both musical and theological content (both elements sometimes found lacking in contemporary Christian music), are made accessible in a new way, conveyed in the musical language of modern people. Jazz, with its immense diversity of styles and influences, subtly transforms old hymns into a more contemporary mode of expression without watering down the intriguing musical structures and spiritual content of the texts. Jazzmusiker aus aller Welt haben es sich zum Anliegen gemacht, die Fülle der bekannten „Realbooks“ um ein „Real Faithbook“ zu erweitern, damit innerhalb wie außerhalb der Kirchenmauern Menschen die befreiende und erneuernde Kraft des Glaubens entdecken, wie sie in alten Hymnen zum Ausdruck kommt. Die Sammlung führt dabei die kirchenmusikalische Tradition und Moderne auf spannende Weise zusammen und schließt eine Lücke, die von vielen seit Jahren schmerzlich empfunden wird. Da werden zum einen Schätze aus der kirchlichen Tradition zugänglich gemacht. Mit ihnen erschließt sich sowohl ein großer musikalischer als auch ein geistlicher Reichtum, den man in modernen kirchlichen Liedern zuweilen vermisst. Diese Schätze werden nun zum anderen in einer musikalischen Sprache vermittelt, die heutige Menschen anspricht. Der Jazz holt uns in seiner Vielfalt bei unseren Hörgewohnheiten ab und führt die alten Hymnen in subtiler Weise in unsere Zeit hinüber. It is our great pleasure to thank all the authors of this collection for their inspired contributions to this first edition of a Real Book for hymns. We called it a “Real Faithbook”, as this book is truly a collection of stories about faith on multiple levels. First, the faith experiences found in the texts of these hymns are what inspired the composers to create a great legacy of music. Second, the hymn composers themselves often had difficult lives, but have given so much joy and inspiration to others by sharing their stories of faith through their music. Third, the faith stories of the jazz musicians who provided the arrangements for this book—and these 21 are just a small group out of many more worldwide—brought them to share the same passion: to connect the heritage of church hymns with the musical language of jazz, and with their CDs and concerts both inside and outside of churches. All of these musicians, in our time and in their way, continue the vision of Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and many others who treated jazz as a spiritual musical language. They embrace jazz’s roots in spirituals and Gospel music, and its ability to express musically and personally the essence of one’s being through inspiration in the moment and on the spot, with no boundaries and no safety net. We want to give heartfelt thanks as well to the Brunnen Verlag in Basel, particularly Christian Meyer and Vera Hahn, for their incredible support for and trust in this project. We have tried to find a coherent and clearly readable musical notation and chord nomenclature, but as jazz is above all a creative art form, the musical notation should be read as an invitation to treat the music with freedom for your own interpretation. The arrangements in this book have different levels of complexity; the version which includes a stanza of the lyrics and a smaller title is generally the one we consider best suited for congregational singing as it contains the original melody. Es ist uns eine große Freude, zunächst einmal allen Autoren dieser Sammlung eines Realbooks von Hymnen und Chorälen zu danken für alle ihre Beiträge! Wir haben dieses Buch Real FAITHbook genannt, weil es vom Glauben auf drei Ebenen erzählt: Zum einen die Choraltexte, ein wahrer Schatz an Glaubenserfahrungen, dann die Lebenswege der Komponisten der Hymnen, die oft gegen viele Widerstände, aber mit viel Leidenschaft und inspiriert von ihrem Glauben viele Menschen über die zurückliegenden Jahrhunderte mit ihren Melodien erreichten und berührten. In the tradition of liturgy and hymns, we draw from a well of common wisdom and inspiration proclaiming the love of God and Christian life as the body of Christ. This Real Faithbook adds a new jazz tone to the old songs and helps us in various ways to revitalize the tradition. As an art form, jazz has the pulse of modern urban life. Jazz embraces the tempo, fragmentation, diversity and individualism in our modern reality in its rhythm, complex (dis-)harmonics and in its way of combining composition and individual improvisation. In other words, jazz is voicing what Dietrich Bonhoeffer calls “the polyphony of life”. Rooted in gospel and blues, jazz has its own tradition as sacred music. But in my view, jazz has as an art form per se an immanent sacredness or sacramentality. In improvising, the musician has to put himself, his talent and his professionalism at stake in breaking down preconceived musical ideas and exploring new musical ones in an immediate context. Playing is a devotional surrender to the spiritual power of music. This vulnerable live act of “break and share” is the sacramental core of God’s creation and the transformation of life in Christ. And it is the core of living liturgy and Christian ethics. I see jazz as metaphor for worship in our modern context. It has been very inspiring to me to work with jazz and jazz musicians in revitalizing the living sacramental aspect in the readings, prayers, reflections and communion in liturgy. Dieser zerbrechliche gegenwärtige Moment des „(Auf-)Brechens und Teilens“ ist der sakramentale Kern von Gottes Schöpfung und die Transformation zum Leben in Christus. Dies ist das Herzstück einer lebendigen Liturgie und die Grundlage von christlicher Ethik. Ich sehe Jazz als eine Metapher für Lobpreis, Anbetung und Gottesdienst in unserer modernen Welt. Es ist für mich sehr inspirierend, mit Jazz und Jazzmusikern in Kirchen zu arbeiten und die Liturgie mit Lesungen, Gebeten, Reflexionen und dem Abendmahl neu erfahrbar zu machen.
