Rabbi Pete Tobias

bat-mitzvah new year – Jewish or secular signifies the – is always a good time for end of their setting out a vision for the engagement future. And this particular with Jewish year is especially apposite as it education. allows me to have a 2020 vision (I’m They might sure everyone will have made that by the time you read this but it’s not join the KT Group, which even mid-December yet, so give me brings them a break…) face to face But my vision for the coming year with all sorts is a very clear one. It’s all about of challenges education. This January sees the culmination of the 2019 KT to their Jewish identities, but for programme; next month is the start most, getting through the ordeal of of the 2020 Group. Kabbalat Torah is reciting Hebrew in front of a the Liberal Judaism congregation and then being post-bar-/bat-mitzvah programme – celebrated at an elaborate party, is an opportunity for our young people where it all ends. to voluntarily engage further with I believe my role in the their Jewish heritage after the bar-/bat-mitzvah process is not obligatory, parent-driven simply to prepare a group of 12 bar-/bat-mitzvah course. year-olds to read a bit of Hebrew. I’d like to dwell a moment on the As a Liberal rabbi who chose that bar-/bat-mitzvah course. Perhaps they expect me simply to being a Jewish adult. That’s why we teach their children how to read ask our young people – more in Thank You the Hebrew and what their hope than expectation – to declare Welcome backportion to RabbiisPete, we missed you and h particular all about. But I’d rather engage the parents in a similar process. I’d like them – and indeed other adult members of TLSE – to have a greater understanding and grasp of what Liberal Judaism is. It’s not just the synagogue with the shortest services that are mostly in English and the rabbi plays guitar and the bar-/bat-mitzvah course is only a year. It’s also one with a very specific approach to Judaism and to Jewish tradition. And I think it’s time that this approach was made known to more members than just those approaching the age of thirteen or who are able to attend the Tuesday morning adult education classes as described elsewhere in this edition of Hakol. So I’d like to introduce an Adult Kabbalat Torah programme. I think it would be best to run it on Sunday mornings, but I’m open to other

suggestions as well. Traditionally, Kabbalat Torah ceremonies took place at the festival of Shavu’ot, which falls this year on 29th May. So the Adult Kabbalat Torah course will conclude with a special ceremony on Saturday 30th May, when all those adults who have participated in this course will graduate. The course will involve some reading, at least one Sunday morning class a month and perhaps the odd weekday evening as well. The focus will be ‘What is Liberal Judaism?’ looking at the history, the philosophy and the development of Liberal Judaism and why everyone in TLSE should be proud of the tradition of which they are part. Look for more details on the flyer enclosed with this first issue of Hakol. ! Let’s make 2020, the first year of TLSE’s second half century, a year of Welcome back to Rab education!

DANIEL BERNARD

D

aniel Bernard is 25 and a member of TLSE. He recently won a gold medal in the Special Olympics forTeam GB in men’s basketball and received the most inspirational Young Person Award in the Inspire the House Awards at the House of Commons. Daniel has autism and learning difficulties . Daniel went to Clore Shalom School where he played as shooter in the netball team and this is where the basketball skills began. He enjoys all sports and plays football golf and tennis as well as being a strong swimmer and an active member of the aquarobics class. He went to Oaklands College Special needs department at 18 and was spotted by the sports coach Simon Jackson Turner as a good basketball player. He started training and joined the Special Olympics St Albans (SOSA) to play basketball. He won a gold medal in the Nationals and was selected to play in the Special Olympics world games in Abu Dhabi this year. The special Olympics are for those with intellectual disabilities. He trained weekly with a blended team to improve his skills. He went with Team GB for 2 weeks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi with Simon as his coach and carer. He played Canada and Israel who he scored an amazing 3 pointer against them. In the final team GB beat the USA 26 -20. Since coming back with his gold medal Daniel has visited schools talking to pupils about his achievements and promoting the Special Olympics. He still plays for SOSA.

6

We now look forward here.

!

His local MP Richard Harrington put Daniel’s name forward for a House of Commons award as the most inspirational young person. He was chosen as the winner and went to the Houses of Parliament to receive his award. Daniel likes coming to TLSE with his mum or grandma and likes singing loudly and a nice kiddush.

ADULT EDUCATION - LET’S TALK ABOUT JUDAISM

ng the activities only take place when Rabbi Pete is Mike that Herman writes:

‘T

he adult education class meets alternate Tuesdays at the Shul. We are a small group with numbers fluctuating between about six and ten. A few years ago we changed our name from ‘Adult Education’ to ‘Let’s talk about Judaism’. The reasons for this have been lost in the passing sands of time; the latter title being advertised in the weekly update but most of the participants referring to the sessions by the former. We have had fewer than our scheduled meetings this year with some cancellations due to the indisposition of Rabbi Pete and his knee and his Californian sabbatical. Now that Rabbi Pete (with knee attached) has returned from his sabbatical, we will become regular once again. Every ‘term’ we set a theme and progress through each theme over about six sessions, which have been as diverse as the Shulchan Aruch (The Code of Jewish Law); the history of Jews in England (our current theme); The Holocaust; the founding and history of the State of Israel. The sessions start at 11.00 am with a cup of tea or coffee and we are often indulged with cakes or biscuits brought in by class members. Because none of us is going to take an exam and Ofsted are not going to visit us anytime soon, we frequently stray from the path of our curriculum with Rabbi Pete and the group recounting personal and hearsay anecdotes.’ Val Dickson adds: ‘The “ Adult Ed” group is welcoming and friendly, the more of us attend the friendlier we become due to having to cuddle up on the settees. Topics are wide ranging and as well as feeling free to express our views we learn from listening to others and from our primary source, Rabbi Pete. It is very relaxed and frequently fails to get past the first sentence as we are encouraged to question, which also means we may stray completely off the topic. It’s amazing what I have learnt.’ And finally Michael Possener points out: ‘If we are allowed to refer to Pete's impending book*, I would like to add something about the class's discussions of each chapter. It occupied a lot of time and was a very interesting extra, with Pete getting our feedback.’ Check out the shul calendar and weekly bulletin for the class dates. And please do come and join us! *’Putting the ‘o’ in God’. due for publication early in 2020. Watch this space!

AARON JONES

I

t’s always good to find new contributors and we are lucky enough to have a new Associate Editor. His name is Aaron Jones and he has agreed to take on the task of being our young reporter for the upcoming generation. So when you read that the youngsters enjoyed themselves on the exciting things they do together you can be sure that it’s not a grown-up who thinks they look happy. They really did have a good time. But enough of this – it’s Aaron’s column and he is raring to go. Hi, I’m Aaron Jones. I am the new Associate Editor of this magazine. I have been at TLSE Religion School for about 6 years now and each week has made me smile. Over the past two weeks we have had a 50th anniversary bake off for TLSE and we also baked

challah. Both weeks were really fun and I enjoyed every moment of it. On the 24th of November, we had the 50th anniversary bake off to see who could decorate the best cake. Our cakes all had different shapes and designs, and everyone got a chance to vote during Hebrew class. Once everyone was done, we were called to see the results, taste the cakes and I won my age group! Then on the 1st of December, we were baking challah! Everyone went into the kitchen and we started. Near the end of the hour, we made a plait of our dough and then we were finished, ready to go to Hebrew. The best bit was we got to take our challah home with us! We’d love to see you on a Sunday morning so come and join us! Aaron Jones

EDITOR’S WORD

T

his issue concentrates on education and development. Education is what you have been taught and development is what is how you are going to change, possibly as a result of the education and hopefully for the better. There are so many aspects to education and development. And of course education is not just formal learning. It is skill and knowledge that has somehow entered into your consciousness. Sometimes it is a person or people who have been at the pushing end of education and sometimes it is circumstances or an event. Could you tell other people? Write to Hakol and tell us who has educated you, not necessarily a teacher. It could be a parent or a child, a neighbour or a friend. From the moment we are born we are open to learning and there are plenty of people to help us gather knowledge and use it to develop ourselves. Keep sending in the stories and the contributions. It’s marvellous to share thoughts and help educate our fellow humans. Gale and Phillipson .co.uk

On behalf of the whole TLSE community the trustees would like to express their most sincere thanks and appreciation for everything that Carol has done. Carol, with the other members of the team, has been there to support those ill or bereaved, lonely or just in need of some short term help, directly or through signposting to other organisations. Her quiet compassion and caring nature has been a real contributor to the family feel of TLSE and we are very grateful. At the same time, Peter and Barbara Merton, who between them have over 60 years service on the team, have also decided to stand down, and we thank them equally. Aly Larholm has agreed to take on the coordinating role of the Care team, and she is looking for some new volunteers to build up the team again. If you would be willing to make the occasional phone call just to keep in touch with members (of all generations and ages), she would love to hear from you. Please email Aly at alarholm@gmail.com.

JOELY BEAR’S 25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Happy New Year! Later this month, Joely Bear turns 25! We hope you will be able to join us to celebrate our achievements over the last twenty-five years and spend the evening in the company of our many volunteers, without whom none of this would have been possible on Sunday 2nd February 2020. We're hosting an evening of dinner, dancing and drinks, accompanied by a live band (who take requests!) at The Piano Works, Farringdon. We have specifically limited these invitations to our generous supporters who have been core to our successes for the last twenty-five years. Tickets to this event are limited and will be strictly issued on a first come, first served, basis. Tickets for this special event are available to purchase at www.JoelyBear.org.uk/25th 17
