FAMOUS JEWISH PERSONALITIES OF OUR TIME VIDAL SASSON OBE
V
idal Sassoon was born in 1928 to poverty in the East End, spending 7 years of his life in an orphanage. He became a leading hairdresser to high society, his innovative style made him famous and earned him the title “Father of modern hairdressing” Apart from his hairdressing business he founded a chain of worldwide hairdressing academies and a global business of selling hair products. He left school at 14. Having hoped to become a professional football player, but instead became apprenticed to the famous society hairdresser Raymond in Mayfair. He opened his first salon in 1954. His name became synonymous with the swinging sixties culture of models, film stars and society figures. He fought for Israel in the 1948 War of Independence becoming a member of the Palmach. The Palmach was originally founded in 1941 by the Haganah High Command to defend the Palestinian Jewish Community, by 1948 when he joined it had over 2000 men and women in 3 fighting brigades. After the creation of the Israeli Army it an artificial backcombed and lacquered was disbanded. look to more a more natural look. He sold his business interests in the early 80’s and moved to California, devoting the rest of his life to philanthropy both of Jewish interests and the “Arts”. He was married 4 times and had 4 children and died in 2012. His legacy apart from his philanthropic interests is he will be remembered for changing the style of hairdressing from

SYNAGOGUE IN CRETE
H
aving just returned from Crete I thought I would share with you the tragic story of the remaining Shul on the island and its lost Romaniote Jewish culture. Chania is Crete’s 2nd city and was once the capital. It is in the north of the island and has a very old Venetian harbour and old town where the synagogue is found down a little cobbled street. You ring a bell and enter through a small door into a courtyard, where you are greeted by volunteers who look after and explain about the history of the shul and people. Moving through a doorway on your left you enter the Shul. The Ark is on the east wall behind an Indian designed curtain. Inside are two sefer torahs.One from Cairo and the other from Prague. Affixed to either side are two sets of Rimonim (scroll handle decorations. These were based on an older, discarded pair that were found during the excavations. To the right on the west wall was the Bimah, this is in keeping with Romaniote traditions as opposed to normal orthodox traditions which locate the Bimah in the centre. Wooded pews were arranged either side against the north and south walls with cushions, it was designed to enable the congregation to reach out and tough the Torah as

it was brought from the Ark to the Bimah and back again. Behind the green and blue curtain on the south wall is a cupboard in which the kiddush cup and other religious items are stored. This curtain was designed by Nikos Stavroulakis who I will mention later. Up a little wooded staircase you will find the gallery for ladies.
Leaving the shul through the courtyard is found the Mikvah which after excavation is one of the oldest functioning to be found in Greece. It is fed by an underground spring and is extremely cold. Outside there is also a small cemetery with 4 graves of rabbis from 1710 to 1848. In the street nearby is a Café called the Synagogue Café, nothing to do with the shul but was the site of the original Talmud Torah school. The shul is a memorial to the Romaniote community whose language was Judeo Greek. Before WW11 there were several shuls in the island but now only Etz Hayyim. On
the 29th May 1944 the whole Jewish population on the island were arrested and imprisoned and were put on a ship called Tanias at Heraklion with 500 Greek and Italian prisoners of war enroute to the death camps in mainland Europe. However, the boat was struck by two torpedoes from a British ship on the 9th June 1944 at 3am, wiping out the entire Jewish population of Crete after 2300 years. There were 7 Jews who managed to escape for various reasons, but unfortunately the sole survivor still alive now was not brought up in the Jewish religion or culture. In the 50 plus years since the Germans left leaving it it ruins, and a subsequent earthquake, the restoration has been achieved by a remarkable man Nikos Stavroulakis who presented a paper at a conference held by the World Monuments Fund and Jewish Heritage Program and it was named as on of the World’s 100 most endangered monuments of international cultural concern. Restoration was begun in 1998. Services are held in the Shul every Shabbat, and all are welcome from ultra-orthodox to the non-observant and even non-Jews. On Shabbat morning there are rarely enough for a Minyan, but the holidays and festivals are celebrated. As well as that when we moved away from my dad he always helped us out if we ever needed anything and always made me happy when I felt down. I know we have to, but I think it is sad we have to say goodbye to Pete. Aaron I remember the first time I went to religion school. I was scared and Rabbi Pete was really nice. From then on I was always happy to go. He always made it exciting, plus I always learnt a lot. I remember how exciting it always was to go to the ‘bean bag room’. He was always so nice to my family, and always helped us when bad things happened. I remember him getting me and my brother tickets to see movies and Nandos when him and my mum were talking. I will miss sorely when he goes to America but I hope he makes other people as happy as he has made me. Dominic de Jonge
Rabbi Pete Rabbi Pete always manages to make you laugh and smile especially when your learning your bar and barmitzah portions. Also im very thankful to rabbi pete for letting me be able to do my batmitzah. It was made so special. This was in march when we were beginning to head into lockdown. So thank you for all of it! Aswell as this he managed to get me to do my batmitzah during a pandemic which is absolutely amazing and something I will always remember. Lawrence and I were at one of the lunches which took place after the Shabbat service once a month. Lawrence was quite disabled at that time and was in his wheelchair. I was standing next to him and was chatting with a couple of female friends. It was always very difficult for Lawrence as, when he was sitting in his wheelchair, the conversations often went on over his head. Whilst I was just standing there chatting, Pete walked up and wheeled Lawrence away. He said he was taking him away from us women to chat with some men. He took Lawrence off to the side of the room where a couple of men were sitting on chairs and sat with them and Lawrence so that Lawrence could be included properly in the conversation. It was so lovely and thoughtful of Pete to do that and showed the loving and caring person he is. It must be at least four or five years ago now but I will never forget it and never stop appreciating Pete's caring and thoughtfulness. I wish I had a photograph of it but, sadly, I don't. When I was learning my portion for my Bat Mitzvah I kept getting a word wrong. On the day on the Bimah when I got to that part Rabbi Pete kicked me ( very gently) so I didn’t get it wrong. It made me laugh. Recently I went to a Seder at my friend who is quite orthodox. The family asked me about my traditions and I gave them Rabbi Pete’s explanation of the plagues. I first met Rabbi Pete at a Liberal Judaism biennial weekend, where he was irreverent re-enactment of a Summer Camp programme) and the closing address (what I now know to be a classic Pete comic poem, I can’t remember if it was set to music or not). And that was Rabbi Pete at his best, as we quickly learned when he joined TLSE. As with all good doubt that TLSE has thrived in the years that Pete has been with us. I wish him well in his next life adventure. Mike
Outside of my family, I can't think of anyone who has had such a my life as Rabbi Pete. I am only envious of my son and daughter, who were fortunate to have been brought up with his take on Liberal know there are many others in TLSE, who like me have only engaged with their religion because of Pete. Thank you for teaching the children for their Bar/Bat mitzvah ceremonies and for taking them to Berlin during their KT year. Good Luck Rabbie Pete Five of us, plus Rabbi Pete, travelled to a trip arranged by Ann Etkind. We flew to Warsaw where Rabbi Pete showed us Centre and making contact with Rabbi Dukhovny in Kyiv. The overnight train Poland into the Ukraine, where the train was jacked up whilst the wheels were changed to accommodate the different rail gauge. We travelled through vast flat plains before arriving at our at the only hotel we looked round the town and met members of the Jewish community at their building which they are working hard to develop. Later we joined their Friday night service and oneg, whilst Rabbi Pete played his guitar. At the Shabbat service the next have the assistance of Rabbi Pete in evening we joined in their Havdallah taken to see the memorial to the very many Jews who perished in the war, along with sites in the old town. A busy and worthwhile visit. A memory which will certainly stayed with me forever. Tina Shaw
I remember BM classes where we watched a lot of Monty Python and ate a lot of Pizza. lot of the knowledge Rabbi Pete taught us for my RS GCSE. There was also the time in Berlin when we carried a toilet brush around the city.....,. Robin Bernard Rabbi Pete is a really good Rabbi. I like his singing and I love it when he comes to Seders in our house and tells us everything about it. I like discussing football with him even though he supports Watford and I support Arsenal. Good Luck Rabbie Pete Rabbi Pete may not be everyone’s idea of the perfect rabbi, however I do entertainer, innovator and of course a control freak workaholic. He has gone the extra mile for so many, not just our members. Through his broadcast experience he has collected an audience from all over the country, a bit like the pied piper. At my sisters wake all the old ladies from her U3A were falling over bride and groom containing as many references to Shakespeare plays as could be included because the ceremony was held at the Globe theatre. We’re looking forward to the time when services at SHUL will resume and we can all meet face to face. GONIA'S RECIPES Banana Bread
IIf you happen to have too many bananas that are too ripe to eat – make a banana bread! If you are like me and do not like a waste - here is one of my recipes using it! This banana and chocolate chip cake has a moist crumb and warming tones of cinnamon and mix spice. Perfect for a snack, with your packed lunch or breakfast. It is too easy not to make! Makes 12-15 slices Prep time: 10 mins Ingredients: 265 g self-raising flour 100 g soft brown sugar 1 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 bananas, mashed (about 180 g of peeled weight) 2 eggs, beaten lightly 125 ml whole milk 85 ml vegetable oil 1 cup (250 ml capacity) of chocolate chip (I use 60% cocoa solids)
1. Preheat the oven to 170*C and line 10x20 cm baking tin with parchment paper.
Bake time: 45 mins 2. Combine all the dry ingredients together. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Mix in the chocolate chips. 3. Put the batter in the tin and place in the centre of the oven. Bake for about 45-50 mins or until a skewer (cake tester) inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. 4. Leave to cool in the tin for about 5 mins and transfer to the wire rack. You can drizzle some melted chocolate on top. 5. Enjoy!

Orange Pecan and Chocolate Oat Biscuits
Homemade oat biscuits with warm orange flavour and addition of dark chocolate to compliment it more. Pecan nuts give a bit more crunch. Easy to make and even easier to eat, a perfect treat! Prep time: 10 mins Makes about 24
Ingredients: 150 g self-raising flour 150 g porridge oats 100 g soft brown sugar 60 g pecan nuts, chopped pinch of salt 1 tsp cinnamon 150 g unsalted butter 2 Tbsp golden syrup 1 Tbsp orange juice 1 orange, zest 1/2 tsp orange extract 75 g dark chocolate (about 65%-75%) Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 175*C (350*F) and line a baking tray
bake time: 12-15 mins
with parchment paper. 2. Combine all the dry ingredients and orange zest in a bowl. 3. Melt the butter with the golden syrup. 4. Add the butter mixture to the dry ingredients along with orange juice and orange extract and mix well. 5. Shape the biscuits by picking about 1 Tbsp of dough and rolling it in your hands to shape a walnut-sized ball. Place on the prepared baking tray and flatten gently with the palm of your hand. Space the biscuits to allow to spread. Put in preheated oven and bake for about 12 mins (15 mins for more crunchy texture). 6. Leave to cool slightly on the baking tray and then transfer to a cooling rack. 7. When completely cold, melt the chocolate in bain-marie and drizzle over the biscuits. Allow to set.

Move on 35 years, recently arrived back in Radlett after 16 years living in Spain, still a member of NPLS I’m thinking where shall I go and then I hear Pete is in Elstree just down the road – great – problem solved. We meet up and then he drops his bombshell he’s off to America but I decide I’ll make the change anyway. Who was to know what was about to descend on us – COVID. Pete’s move was on hold temporary. What has struck me most during this period when all our lives changed dramatically and 18
increased the number of people attending, but he added his own special daily event. These 6.30pm slots have been stimulating, comforting and amusing and have held the community together and helped those not able to get out and see loved ones and friends to cope.
Pete will be missed by the community and all those who worked with him closely but he leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten. Thank you Pete and we all wish you every happiness and fulfilment in your new rabbinic role, and joy and love with your family particularly watching the grandchildren as they grow. I hope you will miss us as much as you miss WatfordFC – only joking but we will miss you.
