MONTHLY MAILING A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER I Know Brunswick Is Supposed To Be Great and All . . . but . . . What Do I Do When I Have a Concern?
Being a parent isn’t easy. We worry for and about our children, all the while harboring great hopes for their futures. As a point of pride, we hope that every aspect of your son’s experience at Brunswick will be a positive one and that you (and he) will see incredible growth during his years with us in terms of character, knowledge, maturity, empathy, judgment and wisdom. That said, it is impossible not to acknowledge that the possibility always exists that at some point in his Brunswick career, there may be some experience, some episode, some issue that causes either you or him concern. So….what do you do in such a situation? The answer is both simple as well as critically important for you, for your son as well as for the School in general. Specifically, the answer to the question above is to let us know immediately! In fact, I’ll go further to emphasize the point…. PLEASE never hesitate to let us know if you ever have a question or concern. I believe, absolutely, that good things cannot happen in a vacuum. For Brunswick to continue to thrive, we must constantly be on guard for things that we could do better. So we need, I need, to hear of any concerns as they arise so that we can do our best to address them. My door is always open; any call you make will be answered and/or returned the same day; any e-mail will be responded to immediately. As I say often in Class Coffees, the only mistake you can make is to decide not to let us know if you have a question or a concern. That said, I hope and trust that your son and you will find this year to be a wonderful and enriching experience; one that surpasses all your expectations. That is our goal always and as the new school year opens, everyone here at Brunswick is ready and raring to go! All the best for a wonderful 2012-2013 school year!

Upper school
From The Upper School Office: We hope our students, our faculty and our parents alike are enjoying these last few weeks of summer to their fullest possible extent. In the Upper School, we have spent the summer preparing for the exciting and (hopefully) rewarding year to come and cannot wait to have these buildings filled with students yet again. Some details for the first month of school: Attendance: It is your son’s responsibility to be at school each morning no later than 7:45am. Any arrival after that will be marked as a “late” and both “lates” as well as “absences” will be noted on each student’s report card and transcript. In the event that a student must miss school for any reason, a parent or guardian must call the Upper School office on his behalf prior to 8:00am (203.625.5856). Students who are absent more than 4 days in a given Quarter will automatically receive an “incomplete” for that grading period. Handbook: The Brunswick Handbook contains essential guidelines for the effective governance of the School as well as details regarding academic expectations, student services and student behavior. It is essential that its contents (pertaining to the Upper School) be read by both students and parents alike. Handbooks will be available for pick-up at all Upper School class coffees; please feel free to give our office a call should you develop any questions while reviewing its contents.

While we all certainly appreciated the opportunity to recharge our batteries over the summer, now that September is on the horizon, we simply cannot wait for the boys to arrive! Teachers have been working diligently to plan lessons and get their classrooms ready and we cannot deny the strong pull towards those special indicators of fall: new nametags on desks and lockers, sharp pencils, new markers and brand new books, freshly covered bulletin boards and a slight chill in the morning. All of these suggest the return to school, the beginning of new relationships, and loads of learning. Please note the important dates and details for Pre and Lower School below. From Johnny Montanez, Director of Community Service: Welcome back! Our schedule of activities for this academic year is very full. We have many opportunities available for boys to get involved and give back to the community. In addition to advisory projects, both the intramural sports programs and the varsity sports programs will also have service projects during the course of the year, participating with their teammates and coaches to help those less fortunate. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of service! Ongoing projects: Neighbor to Neighbor Food Pantry, Christ Church, Greenwich, CT: On the last Thursday of each month, food donations will be collected to give to our local food pantry. Non-perishable food items may be donated any time during the week prior to our delivery. Bins will be set up in the front lobby by the reception desk and any donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated. Delivery Dates for 2012-13: September 20, October 25, November 19, December 13, January 31, February 28, March 28, April 25, May 16 Thanksgiving Food Baskets: During the week prior to Thanksgiving, we will be collecting food items with a Thanksgiving theme. The items will then be sorted by the boys and made into family “baskets,” ready for delivery to local families. Basket assembly will take place the morning of Monday, November 19 with delivery that day. Families from Thomas Edison School and other organizations with which we do service projects will benefit and enjoy a feast on this very special day. To cap the day off, we will have our annual Turkey Bowl flag football game on the back field for bragging rights to the Turkey Trophy!! Holiday Toy Drive: Homerooms will have the pleasure of spreading holiday cheer during December to local families who are less fortunate. We will receive “wish lists” from our local project locations with everything from toys to clothing needs. Advisories will then divide up the lists and create a Christmas box full of wrapped presents for their assigned family. Planning and list distribution will begin on Monday, December 3 and all gifts are due on Tuesday, December 18 for wrapping. Delivery will be Wednesday, December 19. Midnight Run: This most worthy project is a long-standing Brunswick tradition. On Friday, September 14, a group of Brunswick boys with faculty chaperones will take donated clothing, toiletry items and food into Manhattan to distribute to the homeless. We will leave the Maher Avenue campus at 9pm and return to Greenwich at 2am. One of our most popular projects, boys should note that the 14th will be here quickly and they should sign up in the Community Service Office soon. Space is limited. Projects by Grade: Each grade will continue their tradition of advisory-based projects. Advisories should expect to visit a site three times during the course of the year, sometimes with another advisory. Locations are being finalized but freshmen will serve two consecutive days (Mondays or Tuesdays). Sophomores will visit their location three times during the year on a rotating schedule. Juniors will visit their location on two consecutive Mondays. Community Service Day, 2013: This year, Community Service Day is Friday, April 26th. All students will be assigned to a service project that day. Projects range from community clean up at a local beach, playing and working with students at a local elementary school, helping at a day care center, or working with animals. Community Service Day is a wonderful opportunity for boys to experience the joy of service.
