A Campaign for Brunswick School

As Milestone Surpassed, Community’s Strength & Generosity Resounds

BRUNSWICK IS SO GRATEFUL AND THANKFUL to all who have given to or pledged their support for our “Ever Stronger, Ever Brunswick” Campaign!

Our great initiative, which has now garnered more than $96 million in gifts and pledges, seeks to raise and invest $150 million in five essential priorities that have emerged during the course of the last four especially challenging years.

Our community’s commitment and dedication have never been more important: After all, it’s all for our boys! No question: Your gifts and pledges are making a tremendous and truly defining difference in the life of each and every Brunswick boy for decades to come.

Our Campaign’s five priorities are:

1. Health & Wellness

Brunswick has no greater wish for our boys than that they be healthy and resilient throughout their time at our school and throughout long and fulfilling lives.

With that in mind and ever-present — and with thanks to the generous response from donors — a comprehensive and whole-school expansion of Health & Wellness programming across every division is well underway and gaining strength. “Brunswick has always worked to instill in each boy the knowledge and skills necessary for development of physical and psychological health,” said Sarah Burdett, who serves as the school’s chief integration officer and director of schoolwide admission. “We have intentionally built on that strength as we launch Health & Wellness initiatives at every grade level — our first steps have been terrific!”

Of the many notable early accomplishments:

▶ Internist Marcie Molloy M.D. named to the new Directorship of Health & Wellness

▶ New and dedicated Health & Wellness spaces serving all campuses

▶ Increased counseling staff, curriculum enhancements, and on-topic assemblies

▶ Parent Conversation Circles with experts on relevant topics such as nutrition, strength & conditioning, puberty, and more

▶ A ’WICK Center expert speaker series for parents and for students has covered topics such as sleep, resiliency, healthy relationships, anxiety, and more. All programs and services are organized through the central and schoolwide hub: The Center for Wellness, Insight, Courage & Kindness — or The ’WICK Center for short.

“The Center is the primary vehicle for direct support, resources, and curriculum dedicated at every level to the physical and emotional well-being of our boys, our faculty, our families, and our community,” Molloy said. “It’s an incredible resource for every division. We are off to a phenomenal start!”

ESEB has supported the early launch of this program with current-use contributions while it seeks capital gifts to offset architectural and construction costs of building new space and endowment to permanently underwrite operations.

Camilla and Whit McGraw ’95 P ’26, ’28, ’31 are glad to have made a gift in support of the new program. “We’re thrilled to be able to contribute to an entity at Brunswick that we believe will help to shape a more productive, successful, and balanced young man,” Whit said. “We trust in what the Health & Wellness initiative has to offer and are excited to see it grow and flourish throughout the student body, faculty, and entire Brunswick community.”

2. The Thomas W. Philip Upper School Campus

Linda and Tim O’Neill P ’04, ’07 have watched the transformation of Brunswick under the leadership of Tom Philip: Their two sons matriculated in the mid-1990s, just a few years after Philip began his storied career at a school that was then just a small version of what it is today.

As their boys grew, the O’Neill family witnessed the building of King Street, including the opening of the Lower School and what was once the Pre School, and the introduction of top-flight athletic facilities like Robert L. Cosby Field and Burke Field House.

Indeed, while the couple has known the school intimately as parents, Tim has helped guide its progress through his service on the Board of Trustees.

More recently, they have watched the opening of the new Middle School, an acquisition that reverberated throughout every division with the blessings of added space.

At every turn, as former Board Chairman W. Robert Berkley, Jr. ’91 P ’21, ’23 has noted, Tom has “stayed the course,” working ceaselessly and tirelessly for nearly a quarter century to ensure Brunswick always remains true to its strong tradition and core values of Courage, Honor, Truth, and to the excellence of our boys’ education and character development. The O’Neills have made a gift to Brunswick to acknowledge all that has emerged under Tom’s leadership and to build on it for future families and students. Their gift to the $52 million project that this spring became the Thomas W. Philip Campus will support generations to come.

“Tom understands Brunswick, the boys, and the education they are getting better than anyone,” O’Neill said. “We wanted to continue to invest in his visionary transformation and to recognize Tom for all that he has accomplished.”

3. Faculty & Program

Wendy and Ian Sacks P ’20, ’27 have always believed in leadership through service — that we learn so much about leading not by telling people what to do, but instead by serving others.

When they joined the Brunswick community in 2018, the guiding principles of Courage, Honor, Truth resonated deeply with them as foundational values of strong leadership.

“Good leadership entails humility, accountability, and a sense of gratitude,” Wendy said. “We were brought up in a community where respect and serving others were foundational values of sound leadership. And we have sought to bring up our children this way.

“One learns humility and patience when helping someone else,” she noted. “One learns to build community and to lead by caring for others.”

As their boys grew in the Brunswick community, Wendy and Ian saw an opportunity to invest in the programmatic connection of leadership and service. They wanted to help Brunswick be even more intentional as it sets the foundation for the next generation of public and private sector leaders. To that end, their generous gift to Brunswick has helped establish the Directorship of Service Leadership and Sustainability.

Courtney Spada M.D. has been named the inaugural director. She is a pediatrician,

teacher, community organizer, and someone who lives a life committed to service. Her first year at Brunswick has been prodigious — her leadership is guided by the notion that every Brunswick student can be a force for good.

“The overarching goal of our program is to instill in Brunswick boys a humble appreciation of their being a part of a larger community,” Spada said. “And to develop an understanding of their potential to uplift and enhance the lives of those around them — and for students and faculty to embrace an ‘Others Before Me’ mindset.”

Spada has worked to establish specific programs that are appropriate for age and stage, and to bring a sense of purpose and community, including:

▶ “Foundation for a Life of Service,” the theme of the Pre and Lower School program, focuses on Trust Time, all-school drives and events, the ambassador leadership program, and grade-level projects.

▶ “Increasing Ability To Serve,” the theme of the Middle School program, is centered on a highly active service club, drives and events, grade-level projects, and the introduction of leadership opportunities.

▶ “Differentiation and Leadership,” the theme of the Upper School program, promotes grade-wide service trips, clubs, advisory service, drives and events, athletic team service, service leadership training, and curricular service.

4. Our Student Community

Growing up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, David Fisher P ’35 never had the chance to be a Bruin, but his father and grandfather were both proud alumni.

He is the son of David N. Fisher, Jr. ’57 and grandson of David N. Fisher ’26 — the two older men not only attended Brunswick but grew up right in the neighborhood, having been raised in homes a stone’s throw from Maher Avenue.

Though he never had the privilege of being a Brunswick student himself, Fisher said he would not be who he is if not for the education of his father and grandfather.

“Brunswick shaped them, and they shaped me,” he said.

Fisher said it is this inherited strength — the heritage of Courage, Honor, Truth and everything it entails — that prompted he and his wife, Michelle, to establish the David N. Fisher Class of 1926 Scholarship Fund.

The fund provides scholarship assistance to a Lower or Middle School boy from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background who demonstrates financial need.

“Michelle and I have always been focused on supporting access to education, since we see it as the great equalizer,” Fisher said. “While I didn’t have the privilege of attending

A Campaign for Brunswick School

Brunswick myself, I know that through its influence on my father and grandfather in their formative years, the school had a significant impact on me.

“So, on some level, we see this scholarship in my grandfather’s name as representing an alumnus reaching down through the generations to help provide a Brunswick education to a boy who might not otherwise have that opportunity.

“It’s our job, in a way, to give back on his behalf,” he said.

5. Strengthened Endowment

Josyl Barchue ’00 P ’37 calls his Brunswick experience “foundational and formative” — starting with his life as a student and ever since.

“Brunswick has given to me on a fundamental level in ways that I could never possibly pay back, except to pay it forward,” he said. “This legacy exists in me and has a continuing impact on my life.”

Barchue, a current Trustee, has become a member of the Carmichael Society by making a planned gift of life insurance and naming Brunswick School as beneficiary.

He has directed the gift to strengthen Brunswick’s endowment, which will give the school the discretionary funds it needs, now and in the future, to respond quickly to unforeseen and emerging priorities and opportunities.

Barchue said it thrills him to give back to the institution that has nurtured him for the “better part of 40 years” — as a student, as an alumnus, as a parent, and as a Trustee.

He made the gift with two things in mind — first to recognize “the tutelage and passion that were poured into me by so many over the course of my 14 years at Brunswick.”

And second, to ensure that Brunswick has the resources it needs to meet future challenges and opportunities alike.

“Despite the increasing campus size, the endowment, and the perception of Brunswick as a wealthy school, as a Trustee I can definitively state

that Brunswick is a very lean school that is operated with extraordinary economic efficiency — every dollar matters and is spent only with intention and great care.”

In the end, as he raises two young sons among his four children, Josyl is especially committed to supporting a school devoted to the nurturing, growth, and education of boys.

“I am delighted to contribute to Brunswick’s ability to make the necessary improvements that it must continuously make to provide the very best environment for my sons, possibly their sons, and all sons who attend Brunswick to grow into their very best selves, for the benefit of others,” he said. “It genuinely feels like a blessing to be able to do so.”
