BRUNSWICK SCHOOL
MAY/JUNE 2013
MONTHLY MAILING As The Cycle Begins Anew… Ask anyone in the school business what springtime means and they will, no doubt, tell you that the warming of the weather and the budding of the trees means that students get a bit more restless, the days seem to pass a bit swifter and the bittersweet emotions that so often accompany progress to the next grade level, division or college always lurk in the background. Perhaps more than the warming of the weather or the budding of the trees, at Brunswick, spring has its own unique rhythm filled with traditions and experiences that serve to both mark the point each boy has achieved in his development over the course of this current year while also, by necessity, looking ahead with anticipation to the year to come. Some examples for boys and their parents include: -‐ Kindergarten Orientation to the Lower School -‐ 4th Grade Orientation to the Middle School -‐ 8th Grade Orientation visits to the Upper School -‐ Concerts and plays in each division -‐ AP exams for Upper Schoolers -‐ Lower School Arts Night -‐ AP Studio Arts exhibits -‐ The Senior Prom and Senior/Faculty Dinner And, of course, Pre, Lower, Middle and Upper School Closing Ceremonies and Graduation. From a teacher’s perspective, these various rites of spring each have their place and purpose. Each celebrates the great work and progress of the school year that is drawing to a close and each hint at the challenges and opportunities that await in the next phase of the cycle. Watching our Brunswick boys grow and move on is both a joy and a challenge…every boy is loved in his current stage and will be missed. Yet we seek, with the same strength of sentiment, to ready and welcome each to the next stage of their development. After all, growth and progress are what we are all about, and time most certainly doesn’t stand still in a school filled with boys. Congratulations to all our boys for their achievements both great and small this year and every good wish for next year…as the cycle begins anew.

Upper school
From The Upper School Office: May is the last full month of school. As with all school years, it is hard to believe that the time has passed so swiftly. Yet evidence of progress and growth over the past school year abounds and gives testament to time well spent. Another phenomenon of school life is that school years rarely, if ever, end with anything other than a mad rush. No doubt this year will prove true to the rule. Therefore, as is clear below, May is fully packed with a host of events and opportunities for all. Please take careful note of what follows and feel free to call with any related questions. UPPER SCHOOL SPRING PLAY: At 7:00pm on the evenings of May 3rd and 4th, we will be presenting the Upper School Spring Play, “Rumors.” We welcome you to attend either evening’s performance in Baker Theater. From Johnny Montañez, Director of Community Service: Late April saw our Upper Schoolers participate in the annual Community Service Day. This year, as with years past, Upper School students travelled throughout the area to lend a hand to people and organizations in need. We are all very proud of our boys who grabbed a rake, opened a book, played with a child, or held out a hand to people in Greenwich, Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and Westchester County. Here’s a sample of some of the projects in which our boys participated: Ø
Greenwich Green & Clean: Over 20 students hoisted rakes and shovels to clean up areas around town. A familiar sight to many, Greenwich Green & Clean helps keep our town beautiful. Brunswick is proud to be a part of that continuing effort.
Ø
Nathaniel Witheral: a group of senior boys went to visit the residents of Nathaniel Witheral, spending quality time reading and visiting and brightening the day. This popular project dovetails wonderfully with Brunswick’s weekly Music Outreach Program (B-MOP) that brings musical performances to residents all through the academic year.
Ø Adopt-a-Dog: junior boys spent Community Service Day helping this no-kill shelter in Armonk do some “spring cleaning” around the grounds. After the rakes and pruners were put away, the boys helped the staff by exercising and playing with the pups in the numerous enclosures on the property. A happy dog is a tired dog, and the boys made sure there were a number of tired dogs that day!
Ø Waterside School: Continuing our wonderful relationship with this elementary school in Stamford, two homerooms visited the school and helped students with homework, reading, and general schoolwork. Playtime is also a part of this visit and the Waterside kids always enjoy taking on the Brunswick sophomores in a game or two!
Ø Greenwich Library: Our own school librarian, Valerie Fenton, joined forces with two other homerooms to help the Greenwich Library staff with tasks around the building. From re-stacking books to shelf organization, these freshmen kept very busy making sure this important town resource remained in tip-top condition.
As you can see, this small sample of projects undertaken on April 26th runs the gamut from outdoor work to school work to work with children to work with animals. All told, there were 25 different project sites for our Upper School students and faculty, and each boy had a true hands-on experience in service to others. We would like to give many thanks to all the organizations for their cooperation in helping pull this day together, and to the boys for being helpful on this very important day. We’re all looking forward to 2014!
Ongoing Projects: Neighbor to Neighbor: May donations are due on Thursday, May 16. This will be our last regularly-scheduled delivery of the academic year – let’s make it out best!! Please donate non-perishable food items such as cereal, peanut butter, canned fruit and vegetables, pasta and sauces, tuna, soups and the like. Food is always in need as Neighbor to Neighbor has over 500 families that they serve each week. So often, our local food pantries become heavily stocked around the holidays, but as we progress into spring and summer, donations dwindle. Please donate what you can - they really need our continuing support!!
