BRUNSWICK SCHOOL

OCTOBER 2013

MONTHLY MAILING A Force for Good At our Opening Day Assembly, I shared with our students a few disjointed but heartfelt thoughts, three of which I thought I would share here. One, as much as I want each and every one of our boys to succeed, before that I want each and every one of us (students and faculty alike) to appreciate that we are all part of something bigger and better than ourselves. Brunswick School is only as good as any one of us on our worst day. What I meant by that was to remind the boys that we are all in this together. We all benefit from the reputation of those who came before us. We owe it to those who will follow to honor what is special about this place. Brunswick boys stand out. People will judge not just them but all of us by how they conduct themselves. If we are rude or selfish or entitled or spoiled, people will assume everyone here is that way. If we are polite, respectful and resourceful, they will believe that Brunswick School is full of people like that. Two, I urged our boys to look out for each other. We all have our failings and our lapses from time to time. I asked our boys to help the “other guy” be the best he can be and he will, in turn, do the same for them. Together we can help each other tap, as Lincoln said, the “better angels of our nature.” Three, I shared with the boys that I have a little saying that I have taped above my mirror that I read each morning as I get dressed. It offers a good perspective to start each day no matter what the day has in store. I spent much of the summer trying to think of a good saying that could start off our year in much the same way and I finally rested on one that I liked. I liked it because it offers purpose and perspective not just on schoolwork, but on all things and I could think of no better way to start the year. Here it is . . . simple, short and to the point . . . easy to tape up above your mirror if you should ever need a little inspiration: BE A FORCE FOR GOOD. Here are some possible ways to be a force for good: -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐

help others before you help yourself think of others before you think of yourself leave a place better than when you found it enjoy things as a group not on your own raise the level of discourse, don’t lower it win as a team, not as an individual never compromise your honor or encourage others to compromise theirs expect less and thank more

Think about it. Our boys really can’t do better than that. BE A FORCE FOR GOOD.

MIDDLE school

OCTOBER 2013

From Sarah Burdett: The Middle School boys have had a spirited start to the 2013-14 school year. Each advisory wrote team chants as part of our Community Day activities and the results were impressive and help to remind us all of what we stand for as a school and as a division. In addition, boys have been busy establishing solid study routines and strategies in order to put our best practices in place for the first trimester. Boys have also been busy scheduling their “free” time at school. Clubs are again underway, and we have a variety of offerings - from our newspaper, The Bruin, to Diversity Club, Assembly Club, China Care, Jazz Bands, Geography Club, and our new Innovators Club for 7th and 8th graders… just to name a few. Finally, we know that the opening months of school are incredibly busy for parents. Many thanks to our Middle School Class Parents for their many efforts over the spring, summer, and fall and to all MS parents for attending coffees, Annual Dinner, and Curriculum Night (Oct. 2nd). We look forward to a productive and positive school year! After School Supervision: For security reasons Middle School students are not allowed to remain on campus after 4:15pm unless they are signed up for the MS After School Program which Dates to Remember in October: runs until 5:30pm or are under the supervision of a responsible 10/2 MS Curriculum Night 6:30pm adult. If your child is still on campus unsupervised at 4:15pm, we 10/11 1st Trimester Midpoint will place him in the After School Program until you pick him up 10/14 Columbus Day NO SCHOOL and charge your account for the day. Thank you for your 10/18 Mayfair cooperation. Please email Brian Callahan or call the Middle School 10/22 Picture Re-take Day Office if you need information on the After School Program. 10/23 Parent Son Book Club 6:30pm 10/25-27 Homecoming/Bear Fair

Blackboard: Please ask your sons to show you how to login to their Blackboard pages and learn from them how to check weekly homework and their calendar for major assignments. If your son is absent from school, he will use Blackboard to see what classwork and homework he missed. Homework Folders: Homework folders for each student can be found in the Middle School lobby. If your son is sick and he has homework sheets that cannot be downloaded from the website, teachers will put hard copies in his file. Files will be ready to pick up at the end of the school day. Note: you may want to call the office to check and see if there is work before driving all the way to King Street. Middle School Curriculum Night: We look forward to welcoming all parents to our Middle School Curriculum Night that will be held on Wednesday, October 2nd at 6:30pm. On this night your son’s teachers will hold mini-classes and will give a brief overview of curriculum and teaching methods. Please remember that because of the condensed schedule this evening it is not the time to discuss your son’s specific progress with his teachers. The First Midpoint: The midpoint of the first trimester closes on Friday, October 11th. The midpoint is not a formal grading period; thus no report cards will be issued. Rather, midpoints serve as an opportunity to review a student's performance half way through the marking period and to provide you with written comments from each of your son’s academic teachers. These comments should help the boys understand how to focus their efforts for a strong end to the trimester. (Please note: your son’s password to open comment email will be the last 4 digits of his Filemaker ID number.) Parent Son Book Club: If you love a good story, and the chance to talk about it, don’t miss our Parent Son Book Club. Open to boys in grade 5-8 and their parents, the club will meet Wednesday, October 23rd in the MS library at 6:30pm. We will be discussing Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Please contact MS librarian, Marianne McShane mmcshane@brunswickschool.org with any questions. More details to follow. Homecoming: All Middle School families are encouraged to join in this year’s Homecoming activities during the weekend of October 25th-27th. Please check the mailing from the Alumni Office for times and places of specific events. In addition, 7th and 8th grade parents please note: we have invited the GA girls to join us for a dance in the Pre School Gym on the Maple Ave. campus from 7:30-9:30pm on Friday, October 25th following the bonfire. A letter from your class dean will follow with more details and guidelines.

PRE

and

LOWER school

OCTOBER 2013

From Gina Hurd and Katie Signer: After a busy start, we have now assumed a smooth routine at the Pre and Lower Schools. Thank you for your attendance and participation at so many of our beginning of the year events. Hopefully this has allowed our boys, and parents alike, the opportunity to “settle in” to the new school year. Pre School Curriculum Night: An important night for all Pre School parents is Thursday, October 3rd. At 6:30 pm the evening will begin with an opportunity for you to visit your son’s classroom, view his work, and meet his teachers. The teachers will present their curriculum, daily classroom routines, and general goals and expectations for the year. Lower School Curriculum Night will take place on Wednesday, October 9th at 6:30 pm. Following some welcoming remarks in the Lower School Gym, you will visit your son’s classroom, meet his teachers, view his materials and admire his work. In their presentations, the homeroom teachers will share their grade level curriculum and year-end goals. Teachers of special subjects will also be available to meet informally with you. Please note that Curriculum Night is reserved for a general overview and is not intended for individual conferences. Parent/teacher conference sign-up sheets will be posted in each classroom and we certainly invite you to contact your sons’ teachers at a different time should you have any questions specific to your child. Fourth Graders visit Plymouth, Massachusetts: To launch their study of early American history, the fourth graders took a day trip to Sturbridge Village in September and on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00am they will depart with their teachers and chaperones for an overnight trip to Plymouth, Massachusetts. A visit to Plymouth Rock, a tour of the Mayflower II and Plimoth Plantation are just a few of the highlights of this exciting trip. The boys will return on Thursday, October 17 at 4:00 pm, perhaps a bit tired, but certainly having gained a deeper understanding of our country’s early history.

Third and Fourth Grade Talent Show: Does your son play the piano or another instrument? Does he like to sing, dance, recite poetry, or perform magic tricks? Whatever his talent might be we hope he will come and share it with us at our Talent Show on Friday, October 25th. Entry forms will be sent home with all interested students. Completed forms should be given to Mrs. Meloni by Friday, October 11th. Please note our fall show will feature 3rd and 4th graders and our winter show will highlight the talent of our 1st and 2nd grade boys. Bear Fair: What a wonderful way for the Pre and Lower School community to gather and celebrate Brunswick! Thanks in advance to Bear Fair Coordinators, Megan Officer and Janine Braun, for their endless efforts, organizational skills, and creativity in planning this event. We are so grateful to our numerous parent volunteers who will contribute their time and talent as well. Coupled with the festivities of Homecoming on Saturday, October 26, this family event is sure to be a huge hit! Welcome to “Mr. D”: Our third and fourth graders are looking forward to writer-in-residence, Mr. Donato D’Albis. Mr. “D,” as he likes to be called, will spend the entire week helping our boys hone their writing skills. With great humor and passion he will help them learn how to utilize visualization and sensory techniques to embellish their creative writing. He will culminate his visit on Friday, November 1 with the entire Lower School and offer a handful of boys an opportunity to share their writing with their peers. Thank you to Mr. D for inspiring us all! Pre and Lower School Celebrates Halloween, October 31: Pre School boys are asked to bring their costumes to school labeled in a bag on that day. Pre Kindergarten will have a special snack in each of their classrooms from 1:15 to 1:45pm. Our Kindergarten boys will also have a Halloween party in their classrooms from 12:45 to 1:45pm. Shortly thereafter, the entire Pre School will gather on the playground and will parade through the Upper School and around the block. We welcome our parents to join us (in costume, of course!). At the Lower School, the boys will have a Civies Day and may dress in casual attire. In the afternoon, just prior to the parade, they will take time to change into their costumes. As in previous years, we are asking that any costume accessories such as swords, knives, etc. please stay at home. Boys and teachers will march around the Green and will return to the Lower School for cider and donuts. Go Global! We are thrilled to introduce our year-long theme of “Go Global” in the Pre and Lower School. From BPA assemblies to special activities in and out of the classroom, your sons will be offered multiple opportunities to explore our planet, learn about other cultures, and broaden their global awareness. We are already off to a wonderful start!

From Sue Das and Brian Coughlin, Lower School Student Council Advisors: Community Service in the Lower School: The month of October is full of excitement and anticipation as the Student Council begins to take shape. The Lower School Student Council helps organize school-wide projects which gather collections and raise money for a variety of charitable organizations. In turn, students from all grade levels learn about the importance of leadership and service to their School and the community at large. An informational meeting for all third and fourth grade boys interested in running for office will be held on Thursday, October 10th at 7:45am in the Lower School cafeteria. The process will culminate with our Lower School Election on November 8th at 8:25am in the Lower School Gym. A President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer will be elected, and all boys running for office will be invited to be Members-at-Large. Additionally, there will be class representatives from each second, third and fourth grade classroom. On Friday, October 18, our Lower School boys will be invited to participate in “Pay to Wear Pink for the Cure”. Students will be encouraged to pay to wear pink and contribute to Cancer research, with all proceeds donated to the Breast Cancer Alliance. Using a “Relay for Life” format, the boys will also walk or run to raise awareness for this very important cause. As we log the number of laps taken around Cosby Field, we will ultimately calculate the collective distance traveled. A wave of runners in pink is sure to be a sight to remember! From Neil Minsky, Director of Middle School Community Service: The Middle School community service program is in full swing. As in the past, all eighth grade homerooms engage in a year-long community service project. This year, four of the homerooms (Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Landesman, Mr. Stephens, and Mrs. Withstandley) are participating in a new community service initiative called Sweet Readers. This nationally recognized not-for-profit organization connects middle school children with adults who have Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. For more information about the program, feel free to visit http:/www.sweetreaders.org. For the rest of the Middle School, all homerooms will pursue at least one community service project during the year that will reflect the interest of each individual advisory. Finally, the Middle School Student Council has met and will soon begin organizing and promoting the various community service opportunities as they arise throughout the year.

From Johnny Montanez, Director of Upper School Community Service: The Upper School kicks off its community service this month with athletic teams and Upper School clubs participating in the Waterside School’s 5K race to raise money for their scholarship fund. Here’s a listing of other on-going projects in the works: • On Monday, October 21st, students from grades nine through eleven will go to Family Centers, Boys and Girls Club, Waterside School, and Thomas Edison School to perform their advisory community service. •

On Thursday, October 24th, students from Mrs. Beattie’s advisory will deliver the Upper School’s first monthly food drive to Neighbor to Neighbor. Donations are always welcome!

On Friday, October 25th, Upper School students and faculty will be asked to wear pink in support of breast cancer research.

And finally, a special “shout out” to Spencer McDonough and the Arabic Club for their efforts organizing a winter clothing drive for Syrian refugees. The clothing drive will run until Friday, Oct. 4th.
