MONTHLY MAILING The Gift of Time Although this letter is for the month of May, as it is also the last of my letters for the school year, I thought I might focus my comments upon the summer to come. Summer, especially for students (but I guess for us all to one degree or another) is a very unique window of time in the passage of a year. More than anything, for students, summer provides time . . . time to do things that you couldn’t do during the school year, time to try new things, time to get outside (certainly a welcome experience after the winter that we have had), time to reflect and time to renew. As we work through the last month of the school year and head into a much anticipated summer, below are just a few suggestions for our boys on how to make the time ahead meaningful: -

Set a goal to work toward, achieve and look back upon with pride: o Climb a mountain o Do something outside your comfort zone o Focus upon (and complete) one meaningful community service project or task o Keep a diary o For older students . . . get (and keep) a job

Get outside. Summers simply cannot be spent in front of a screen. o Daily exercise of some sort is good for the body, the brain and the soul o Warm(er) weather provides a wonderful environment for physical activity

Spend time with family. So often, the school year gets so busy with so many people (students and parents alike) going in so many different directions that family time is hard to come by. o Plan family walks or games o Schedule family dinners o Consider a family trip with more focus upon “family” and less upon “trip”

Read, read, read . . . and read. o It is amazing to me how few of our boys find the time or inclination to read for pleasure. o Summer provides the perfect opportunity to commit to reading a book or two . . . just for the joy of it.

Upper school

From the Upper School Office: May is the last full month of school. As with all school years, it is hard to believe that the time has passed so swiftly. Yet evidence of progress and growth over the past school year abounds and gives testament to time well spent. Another phenomenon of school life is that school years rarely, if ever, end with anything other than a mad rush and no doubt this year will prove true to the rule. Therefore, as is clear below, May is fully packed with a host of events and opportunities for all. Please take careful note of what follows and feel free to call with any related questions: Upper School Spring Play: At 7:00pm on the evenings of May 2nd and 3rd, we will be presenting the Upper School Spring Play, “The Foreigner.” We welcome you and your family to attend either evening’s performance held in Baker Theater. SAT I and SAT II Administration: On Saturday, May 3rd, SAT I and SAT II (subject tests) will be administered at Brunswick for most of our students who elect to sit for a test at this time. The tests will be held on the King Street campus and will begin promptly at 8:00am and students sitting for the tests should bring several #2 pencils, their admissions tickets, and some form of identification. Advanced Placement Exams: Please see the AP exam schedule listed in each student’s Daily Planner. These tests will be administered over the weeks of May 5th and May 12th. These tests must be taken by all students currently enrolled in AP courses. Any student taking a test should arrive 15 Dates to Remember in May/June: minutes prior to the test's published starting time. 5/5-16 AP Exams (see Planner for details)

Senior Exams: Seniors will take final exams as needed on Friday, May 16th. Senior Seminar: On Monday, May 19th, Seniors will begin Senior Seminars in an effort to further prepare them for life in college and beyond. Seniors boys should arrive at school at 8:00am. Senior Prom: The Senior Prom will be held on the evening of Tuesday, May 20th and all Seniors should be dropped-off at the Maher Avenue lot no later than 4:45pm and picked-up upon their return at midnight. All Senior parents should have recently received a detailed letter in this regard. Exam Review: Exam review for all underclassmen will be held over the course of the week of May 19th and more specifically, Thursday and Friday of that week will have modified class schedules to ensure that all classes meet so as to adequately review for the upcoming Final Exams.

Senior Awards Day and Senior/Faculty Dinner: All Upper School students will be expected to attend our Senior Awards Ceremony that will be held at 3:00pm on Monday, May 19th at King Street. The ceremony should end around 4:30pm and will be followed by the Senior/Faculty Dinner, which will be held in Middle School Dining Hall beginning at 5:00pm. Graduation: Graduation for the Class of 2014 will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, May 21st at King Street. All Upper School students will be expected to attend the ceremony in its entirety. Parents of underclassmen should plan on the ceremony concluding at or around 4:30pm. End of 4th Quarter: The final quarter of the year closes on Friday, May 23rd. Shortly after the conclusion of exams (which will be administered the following week), a full report card and comments for students who have encountered some measure of academic difficulty, along with Advisor comments on each student, will be emailed home. Memorial Day: On Monday, May 26th, there will be no school in observance of Memorial Day. Final Exams: Final Exams for all underclassmen will be administered from Tuesday, May 27th through Friday, May 30th. The Upper School Exam schedule can be found listed in each student’s Daily Planner. Exam Return and Closing Exercises: On Tuesday, June 3rd, all underclassmen will run through a modified mini-class schedule (displayed in the Daily Planner) during which teachers will return exams. Those mini-classes will conclude promptly at 10:45am after which all underclassmen will go to King Street so as to join in Closing Exercises beginning at 11:30am. The ceremony should conclude around half past noon for pick-up.

MIDDLE school

From Sarah Burdett: Happy spring! Once again, the end of the school year sneaks up on all of us. This year has been one of terrific growth for all of our Middle School boys, and we appreciate your partnership in setting goals for learning and for life. We have had a year of celebrating creativity and collaboration, and those celebrations continue this spring as our boys take to the stage for the many events listed below. Please mark your calendars! Attendance and Lateness: Please make every effort in the last weeks of school to schedule appointments outside of school hours and to have boys in homeroom promptly at 8:05am. As we head into the final weeks of school, it is critical that the boys have a very consistent routine. Many thanks for your support. Middle School Spring Show Grades 6-8: This spring actors from Brunswick School and Convent of the Sacred Heart will be performing the musical, Disney’s “Growing Up Broadway” under the direction of Alexander Constantine. Performances will take place in Camuto Auditorium on Thursday, May 1st at 4:00pm and at CSH on Friday, May 2nd at 2:30pm. Middle School Spring Choral Concert Grades 6-8: Tuesday, May 6th at 6:00pm. Boys should wear a solid shirt (any color), khaki pants, and dress shoes. Ties will be provided. Vocal warm-up will be at 5:30pm. Dates to Remember in May and June: 5/1,2 5/6 5/13 5/21

Middle School Spring Instrumental Concert Grades 6-8: Tuesday, May 13th at 6:00pm. Boys should wear their usual school dress minus the blazer. Instrumental warm-up will be at 5:30pm. Early Dismissal – Graduation Day: On Wednesday, May 21st, Middle Schoolers will be dismissed at 12:30pm to enable Middle School faculty and families to participate in Upper School Graduation at 3:00pm. Regular bus service will be available. Celebrating the Fives: Fifth grade families come celebrate your sons’ artistic talents on Thursday, May 22nd. Fifth Grade Band Concert and “Fives Go to the Oscars” will follow at 8:30am. (As stated in the letter, if parents are unable attend 11:30 to AM - 1:00the PMThursday morning show, you may come to Tuesday afternoon’s dress rehearsal.)

End of 3rd Trimester: The final academic trimester will close on Friday, May 23rd. At the end of the year, all students will receive a report card and teacher comments for those students who encountered difficulty in a course or on the exam (grade of "C-" or below or “1” effort). Advisors and Head Teachers will also write year-end reports on every boy in their homeroom. Report cards and comments will be emailed home the week of June 9th. Exams: Review for 6th – 8th final exams will begin on Friday, May 23rd. Exams will be given on Wednesday, May 28th and Thursday, May 29th. The full exam schedule is included in this newsletter. Please note: 1) all boys will be required to stay at school until 3:30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday for exam review, 2) we will have a 1:00pm dismissal on Thursday, May 29th but there will not be bus service until 3:45pm. Friday, May 30th there will be no school because of exam make-up day. Exam Debriefing Day: In an effort to provide time to debrief from 3rd trimester exams, we are conducting a half-day of abbreviated classes on Monday, June 2nd. On this day, exams will be passed back and reviewed, providing the boys with an opportunity to learn what they can from this exam experience. Dismissal on June 2nd will be at 12:00pm. Closing Exercises: The Brunswick Closing Exercise ceremony will take place Tuesday morning, June 3rd at 11:30am in the Dann Gym here at King Street. All Middle School students are required to attend this program, which honors the achievements of both Middle and Upper Schoolers. Please drop your sons off at 11:00am on Tuesday and tell them to meet their Advisors/Head Teachers. Pick up on June 3rd will be at 1:00pm. Summer Work: Your boys will bring home folders at the end of May that will hold their summer work for math, foreign language, and English. Please review the work with your son so that you can set up a schedule for its completion during the summer months.

From Gina Hurd and Katie Signer: Many thanks to the BPA for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Day. The global lanterns, the words of gratitude and the beautiful flower arrangements made us feel so special. We so enjoyed the special lunch and appreciated the car charger from the BPA. Thanks also go to our amazing BPA Division Representatives, Jackie Homan and Pam Keller, and to all of our parents for your overwhelming support this year. We appreciate you! Field Day, May 13: Pre and Lower School students will gather for a fun-filled athletic day coordinated by our fantastic physical education team. It will be a Lower School Civies Day and all boys will be asked to wear a red or white shirt depending on their team. The Pre School boys will travel to King Street with their teachers via the Brunswick shuttle bus. Following these events, the Student Council will sponsor a drink sale for the Lower School boys. Weather permitting, it promises to be a great afternoon. In case of rain, the events will be rescheduled for Thursday, May 15th. We are looking forward to celebrating the artistic talents and efforts of our Lower School boys at Arts Night 2014. All Lower School families are cordially invited to take part in this special night on Wednesday, May 14th. The festivities will begin at 6:00pm when everyone will gather in the Burke Field House for a delightful musical concert Dates to Remember in May: entitled “Go Global!” Under the direction of Ms. Wamunyu, the 5/1 4th Gr. Parent Orientation to MS 8:15am boys in grades one through four will take us on a trip around the 5/1 Student Council Meeting 7:40am world as they share songs from around the globe. Following the 5/1 Pre-Kindergarten to Sam Bridge concert we invite all families to enjoy a gallery of artwork displayed Schwartz/Hebert at12:00pm & Eno/Smith at 1:15pm throughout the Lower School. Every boy’s artistic talent will be 5/2 Pre School Appreciation Assembly 10:00am showcased so be sure to allow plenty of time for browsing and 5/2 1 L/H Presentation 8:25am admiring. With guidance this year from Kim Amussen, the boys 5/6 2nd Gr. Cinco de Mayo @ Brunswick 9-10:00am have created a truly spectacular display. 5/7 “Popsicle Playdate” for NEW PK Boys 1-2pm 5/8 Kindergarten Mother/Son Tea Party 1:45-2:45pm Pre School Closing: You are cordially invited to join us at 5/9 PK Mother’s Day Celebration 11:00am 10:00am on Thursday, May 29th when we celebrate the closing of 5/9 Lower School Appreciation Assembly 8:25am our Pre School. Traditionally, it is a special day for the Lower 5/20 Brucemobile visits the PK School boys, teachers and parents to honor the Fourth Grade class 5/20 1st Gr. Class Party @ Byram Park 12:30-2:30pm as they prepare to move on to Middle School. All boys are required (Dismissal @ 12:00 noon) to attend the closing ceremony that will begin at 10am. In addition, 5/20 2nd Gr. Trip to Bush Holley House 9:15-12:00pm they are asked to wear long khaki pants with a jacket and tie and 5/21 Upper School Graduation - Early Dismissal PS & LS should arrive in their classrooms at 9:30am. If you are unable to Pre School @ 11:45, Grs. 1-2 @ 12:00, Grs. 3-4 @ 12:15 attend the assembly, please pick up your son at the Lower School at 5/22 2nd Gr. We encourage the boys to spread the work over time and keep it in a safe place. All completed work should come to school next fall. President’s Letter It’s May? Wow! Where did the time go?! As the year comes to an end I would like to take the time to thank the entire Brunswick community for their incredible generosity of time and talent. The purpose of the Brunswick Parents Association is to enrich the lives of our boys and strengthen our school community. Whether you served on the BPA Board, as a class parent or host family, or baked brownies for snack, your contributions are greatly appreciated. We have accomplished so much this year and we couldn't have done it without your help! While their activities are visible, some of our BPA moms do not get routinely recognized and I would like to take a moment to do so now. I appreciate all the hard work done by Kelly Albano and Tracy Grossman assisting with the Upper and Middle School theater productions. Overseeing costumes, stage props, refreshments and coordinating ticket sales is no small task – bravo! Kudos as well to Ally Roach and Abby Pillari for the great assemblies we offered our boys this year. Many thanks to Susan Hartong and Sonnet McKinnon for their diligent work coordinating the team moms for Brunswick’s athletic teams in both the Upper and Middle Schools. Carolyn Weiner did a wonderful job with Bear Hugs, helping us care for our community’s needs. Linda Reals and Maine Park have done a fantastic job keeping the Bearly Used Closet brimming with khakis, brown sweaters, and athletic equipment of all kinds! A huge thank you to Eileen Tang, whose patience and organization in coordinating and editing all the BPA news for the monthly newsletter has been nothing short of amazing. I wish our ‘Wick Walk Run chairs, Jeanie Wahl and Darrelle O’Connor, best of luck for their May 10 event. I know that it will be terrific! A very special thank you to Kim Augustine, Juliana Belcastro and Mary Jones, the extraordinary chairs of this year’s Spring Benefit and Auction, “Light Up The Night.” This much-anticipated event, enjoyed by our entire community, was a resounding success with the evening’s proceeds going towards the BPA S.T.E.M Endowment Fund. Finally, I would like to thank the BPA Executive Committee - you are incredibly talented women. It was truly a wonderful year and it has been a pleasure to work with all of you. My best wishes go to our incoming President, Joan Beth Brown. I am confident that we can expect many great things under her leadership next year. I am grateful for the honor of serving as BPA President. It has been a privilege to work for a school that I truly love. Thank you all for supporting the arts at Brunswick! Middle School Performing Arts Mark your calendars for the Brunswick/Sacred Heart Spring Musical, “Growing Up Broadway!" This spring musical revue features the talents for both ‘Wick boys and CSH girls in grades six through eight. It is a delightful look at the ups and downs of adolescence as told through various Broadway songs. The show runs approximately 50 minutes and is appropriate for any age. Performances will be held on Thursday, May 1, at 4:00pm in Brunswick’s Camuto Theater, and on Friday, May 2, at 2:00pm in Sacred Heart’s auditorium. Admission is free! Also, the final Middle School Choral Concert of the year will be held on Tuesday, May 6, at 6:00pm in Camuto Theater. Thank you to everyone for your support of MS arts this past year!

The classes were a huge success and all had a lot of fun. Attendance for both grades was unprecedented. Teacher Appreciation Thank you to all of the generous parents who volunteered their time and baking skills to help make the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon a great success. We would like to recognize Herberth Melgar and his kitchen staff for treating everyone to a very special meal. Of course, no event at Brunswick would be complete without recognizing the Maintenance Staff who, quite simply, makes our job look easy. The April raffle winners were: Douglas Burdett, Joshua Duennebier, Poonam Gupta, Michael Hannigan, Elizabeth Hebert, Patricia Meloni, James Stephens, Andrea Strileckis, Kristie Virtue, and Jing Wang. Two sets of New York Rangers tickets were awarded this month as well. There is one more monthly raffle to be held in May so there are a few more lucky teachers who may win the last raffle of the school year. We enjoyed having the privilege of gifting so many wonderful items this year. From restaurant gift cards, to tickets to sporting events and plays, and even vacation homes, we had the pleasure of spreading cheer to the Brunswick teachers. We recognize how fortunate we are to have such a generous parent body and such amazing teachers with whom to share. We appreciate the kindness of the heads of Pre, Lower and Middle school for hosting and helping to orchestrate fun and meaningful programs for the boys. The Pre School students joined Animal Embassy and incredible live Animal Ambassadors in an interactive, educational and entertaining presentation. Students met a variety of animals from around the world, such as a Nile Monitor lizard, an Emperor scorpion and an Arizona Mountain King snake, and learned how they must adapt to unending environmental challenges in their individual habitats in their own unique ways. The Lower School was captivated with motivational speaker and Paralympic Chris Waddell - the most decorated male in Paralympic history and the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro unassisted. Waddell spoke to the boys about the resilience of the human condition by using video clips and stories to challenge the boys to think about the assumptions we make about the labels that we place on others and ourselves. The Middle School concluded our spring season with a repeat guest: Shakesperience Productions, Inc. and their performance of Macbeth. This high-impact, 65-minute program depicted the Thane of Glamis' tragic thirst for power. The Shakesperience approach engages the actor and audience and explored freedom of choice, ambition and greed, self-control and allophilia - a positive attitude in regard to all groups of people. From Sue Das and Brian Coughlin, Lower School Student Council Advisors: We are thrilled to report the Lower School boys went above and beyond during the spring Reed to Feed Read-a-thon for Heifer International. The boys read with fervor, excitedly collected sponsors and together raised an unprecedented amount of money – $13,000. Thanks to the generosity and good will of our boys and their families, at our most recent count it appeared the Lower School will be able to donate the equivalent of six water buffaloes, eight heifers, ten goats, five llamas, ten sheep, ten flocks of chicks, six pigs, honey bees, rabbits, and a camel! Additionally we can donate community animal health worker kits to provide training in animal health and the gift of treadle pumps for irrigation. The boys should be commended for their commitment to helping others and their wonderful participation as readers! What a joy to have "gone global", and helped so many, in our service learning efforts this year. Thank you. In May, the Student Council will sponsor the Annual Field Day Soda Sale, and we will hold our final meeting of the year on Thursday, May 15. We look forward to recapping our year of helping others inside and outside our community. Finally, our thanks go out to all the elected officers, members-at-large, and class representatives for their fantastic participation this year.

From Neil Minsky, Director of Middle School Community Service: As we wrap up another year, each grade in the Middle School finished strongly with its community service efforts. Mrs. Boyd’s homeroom collected food and delivered it to the local Neighbor-to-Neighbor office. The homerooms of Wynia and Fraser conducted a shoe drive in which they collected over 150 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, a global non-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty. In the Seventh Grade, the homerooms of LaRiviere and Falco organized a collection of goggles, caps, towels, and other necessary items for the “Swimming Hot Shots” program at the Yerwood Center in Stamford. The children had never received any formal swim instruction or water safety skills, and they were thrilled with the generous contribution. Finally, the Eighth Grade boys successfully completed yearlong projects at their local sites. I would like to thank all faculty, students, and parents that helped us reach our community service goals this year. Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you in September. Late April saw our Upper Schoolers participate in the annual Community Service Day. This year, as with years past, Upper School students travelled throughout the area to lend a hand to people and organizations in need. We are all very proud of our boys who grabbed a rake, opened a book, played with a child, or held out a hand to people in the area around Greenwich. Here’s a sample of some of the projects in which our boys participated: Greenwich Green & Clean: Over 20 students hoisted rakes and shovels to clean up areas around town. A familiar sight to many, Greenwich Green & Clean helps keep our town beautiful. Brunswick is proud to be a part of that continuing effort. Nathaniel Witherall: a group of senior boys went to visit the residents of Nathaniel Witherall, spending quality time reading and visiting and brightening the day. This popular project dovetails wonderfully with Brunswick’s weekly Music Outreach Program (BMOP) that brings musical performances to residents all through the academic year. Adopt-a-Dog: senior boys spent the day helping this no-kill shelter in Armonk do some “spring cleaning” around the grounds. After the rakes and pruners were put away, the boys helped the staff by exercising and playing with the pups in the numerous enclosures on the property. Waterside School: Continuing our wonderful relationship with this elementary school in Stamford, two homerooms visited the school and helped students with homework, reading, and general schoolwork. Playtime is also a part of this visit and the Waterside kids always enjoy taking on the Brunswick sophomores in a game or two! We would like to give many thanks to all the organizations for their cooperation in helping pull this day together, and to the boys for being helpful on this very important day. We’re all looking forward to 2015! Be sure to have your son stop by my office for summer service opportunities. Have a great summer!
