By Steve Givens, NBNC Activities Director and Debbie Mansir, NBNC Membership Director
If you’re new to Brunswick County, you might wonder: Where should I get a haircut? Who can I trust to work on my car? Is there a good dentist nearby? North Brunswick Newcomers Club (NBNC) has answers.
NBNC is a non-profit social group with monthly meetings and frequent activities that give members a chance to make new friends and see what Brunswick County is all about. You’ll meet people a lot like you and hear about local activities and institutions important to your new community.
Meetings are on the second Friday of each month. Snacks, beverages, and social time begin at 9:15 a.m. and the meeting, with a speaker, begins at 10 a.m. at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland.
The club organizes and sponsors 8-12 activities each month in Brunswick County and the Wilmington area. Newcomers gather to enjoy dining, biking, hiking, historic and cultural tours, game groups, and outings.
Dues for 2022-23 are $35 per household. To register or learn more about NBNC, visit www.nbnewcomers.org. Long-Term Care Planning
Long-Term Care Planning Month takes place in October. The month creates awareness to help seniors and caretakers understand and prepare for the high costs of healthcare for adults.
This is a good time to plan a meeting with professional advisors such as an elder law attorney, primary care doctor, and admission coordinators at long-term care facilities.
If you have any questions or need help with long-term care planning, reach out to an Aging Resource Specialist at 910-754-2300.

Longaberger Baskets Galore
By Mike McGurn Thrift Store Operations Manager
Recently, our Thrift Stores received a large donation of Longaberger baskets and accessories from a former dealer. The items are all brand-new “old stock” from a previous side business. Many are in their original packaging and the baskets are in mint condition.
Both our Calabash and Shallotte Stores have beautiful displays and plenty of inventory left and we are offering all Longaberger items at 20% off while supplies last.
What’s a Longaberger?
The Longaberger Company began as a family-owned business in 1973 based in Dresden, Ohio. They made high-quality handcrafted maple wood baskets and a line of accessories to go with the baskets. They sold the baskets at demonstration parties similar to Tupperware parties.
The baskets became highly collectible through the years and even more so after the company closed in 2018. At its peak in 2000, Longaberger did $1 billion in sales and had 8,200 employees and 45,000 independent distributors.
These beautiful baskets and accessories make great gifts as they are decorative, collectible, and useful too. We have lots of accessories like colorful cloth basket liners, plastic inserts, display racks, matching napkins and place mats, table runners and tablecloths, as well as a nice line of stoneware crocks and coasters. Stop by soon while supplies last and take advantage of this wonderful donation by spreading a little Longaberger Love of your own.
