From the bestuurspos... To my beautiful Nerina sisters ♥ I firstly just want to thank everyone on my Brutus 2016 committee who contributed to this edition. I cannot be more proud of each and every one of you and the way in which you poured your hearts out to produce this new and exciting ‘Brutus 2016: Winter Edition!’ 2016 started off at a running pace. Welcoming flew by and before we knew it, 100 more girls had become our sisters and our home was full again. Too much has happened this semester to mention it all, but something that has stood out the most for me, is that the more the world tries to break us down, the more we work together and stand tall – we stand together as friends, as a residence, as a university and as a family.

“… Laat ons almal saamstaan, laat ons almal bou…” - Nerina Huislied It is clear from how the year has started that 2016 is one which is going to challenge us all, but if I could give each of you reading this one piece of advice, it would be to focus on finding your passion. When there is chaos around us, the best remedy is simply to lose yourself in the things that you love. We’ve gotten this far through the year – so let’s embrace the rest of it and enjoy the ride. A quote from Anita Roddick: “To succeed, you have to believe

in something with such a passion that it becomes a reality.” I wish you all a wonderful holiday ♥ Megan Payne

Remaining focussed Today is a good day and I have conquered a part of it.

that it is not. It is that moment when you look at yourself and you feel great despite the bumps and humps. It’s the emotional well-being you feel deep inside. It’s the moment you look at someone and say I don’t want to be like him/her. It is about how I feel when I wake up and go to sleep.

I remember my couch potato days where I could not stand the odd person running, jogging or working out. I remember the times when living a healthy lifestyle was just an unnecessary factor in my life because we were all going to die whether or not we were healthy or fat. I had this negative attitude towards living more Our mindset has become this negative space and it cautiously about my health and my weight. puts you off. You lose courage and you set the bar way too high for yourself. The life of a varsity student can be tough sometimes between all the classes, assignments and tests it’s hard to find the time or money to try out all the different hotspots in town for delicious meals. Let’s face it, not all of us woke up ready to conquer master chef, props to you if you are killing it, but for the rest of us when you’re that busy or just too lazy it’s easy to fall into that stereotypical black hole of ramen noodles for late night dinners and steamed vegetables for lunch. So for those of us who are struggling or if res food just isn’t cutting it (except for schnitzel Wednesday of course), I’ve come up with a list of cheap and simple, tasty recipes to try that will keep you going till that pocket money comes in or for those of you who just feel like spoiling yourselves. Haven’t had a chance yet to try My Brew’s new cupcake, ‘Oreo Surprise’? Don’t worry; I’ve got you covered with this super quick and easy Oreo mug cake recipe that’s really going to satisfy that sweet tooth. Ingredients:  8 pairs of Oreo cookies  1/2 teaspoon of baking powder  1/2 cup of milk (can be low fat) Method: -Crush the Oreos, once completely crumbed add with the baking powder into your mug (the bigger the better, just make sure its microwave safe). -Add in the milk and stir well. -Pop it into the microwave for about 2 minutes and voila!

Looking for an interesting spin on your classic popcorn movie nights or just a small snack to take with you to lectures, try these microwavable Sweet Potato Chips.

Are you missing having that fresh homemade banana bread with your morning tea or coffee? Make your own with this Banana Bread in a mug recipe.

Ingredients:  2 teaspoons of olive oil  1 sweet potato  1/2 teaspoon salt  1/4 teaspoon pepper

Ingredients:  3 and a half tablespoons of flour  1 tablespoon brown sugar  1/8 teaspoon salt  1/8 teaspoon baking powder  1/8 teaspoon of baking soda  1 egg  1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract  1 tablespoon vegetable oil  1 tablespoon milk  Half a banana, mashed

Method: -Slice the sweet potato into thin pieces (the thinner the crispier). - Toss the slices into a medium bowl with the oil, salt and pepper. Make sure all the slices are evenly coated. - Coat a large microwavable plate with cooking spray and spread the sweet potato evenly onto the plate - Microwave, uncovered for 2-3 minutes until some slices start to brown (depending on thickness of slices and microwave power). -Remember to keep turning and checking on your slices so they don’t burn. - Transfer the chips to another plate and allow them to cool complete before you try them.

Method: -In a large mug, coated in cooking spray, mix all the dry ingredients first. -Add in the egg and mix well. - Stir in the vanilla, oil & milk and then add the mashed banana -Microwave for about 2-3 minutes depending on the microwave intensity. There is a chance it could rise over the mug as it heats.

Surviving Nerina in the Winter By Lize Nel

W inter. Wow. Am I the only one freaking out that winter is already upon us? For me, winter is always so sneaky. When you close your eyes it’s already May and people have dusted off their fuzzy coats and their expensive leather boots. I think winter is the bestespecially for our girls. To dress, although it will take a bit longer, is much easier. You only need pants, a sweater, boots, a scarf and a warm jacket. And here’s the best partno one will know if you’re wearing a bra, walking around with your pajamas underneath your coat or even if you have showered. All you need to worry about is if you are warm and that the outer layer of your outfit is on point, no one has to know what’s on the inside. Here’s a few tips to keep in mind during this winter.

#1

If you are in res and you are getting cold- don’t be lazy and see how long your body can resist the cold, go put on a sweater. Don’t leave your coldness until you’re freezing and have to get in a warm shower. The moment you’re getting cold, you’re getting sick. Always wear socks, trust me, if your feet are cold, so are you. Get yourself some decent pantoffels.

#2

Vitamins are key! Yes, girls, all of us suffer from the severe disease of almost dying as the seasons are changing. Get your vitamins and minerals in stock so that you can fight those buggers.

#3

Always have your umbrella with you and be sure to have a rain jacket for the winter, no matter how hideous it is, you don’t want to be wet when it is already freezing outside. Of course rain boots go with the rain jacket, wet socks aren’t even funny.

#4

Take your pajamas with you when you go to the shower. Otherwise, by the time you get to your room, you’re so cold, you’ll have to take another shower.

#5

Always have hot chocolate in your room for those cold nights when you and your friends are having a slumber party and decided in advance to skip class the next day.

#6 Remember, then again- summer bodies are made in the winter. Sorry, I had to

.

Good luck to all the 8’am’ers who will not be seeing the sun as they wake, you can do this. Together we will conquer winter and the exams! 13 13

Run away from your problems... Has the running-bug bitten[1] you yet? Want to run away from all your problems? Why don't you run a race? Check out these amazing races that you can start training for today. Start getting the endorphin-rush going. All you need: good sportsbra[2], running tekkies[3], socks, and NERINA[4] GEES! But how, do you ask? How do I start running? Start small - focus on running to the stop street and back. Every run, go further and walk less until you're faster than The Flash[5].

[1] Please note that this is a figurative bug. No injury would be induced if bitten by this bug. [2] A good sports bra means that if you are more voluptuous, a good supporting sports bra would be best. [3]Tekkies: translation closed exercise shoes. This is an Afrikaans reference. [4] Please note that the word Nerina in this context refers to the Stellenbosch University ladies residence, Nerina. This does not refer to the beautiful flower, Nerine sarniensis (L.), which also is called Nerina. Nerina is a house where you will always find yourself. Situated on Klaasens Rd, Stellenbosch. Coordinates -33.935407, 18,870852 [5] Reference to DC Comics' superhero, Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash. The Flash's superpower is to run and move extremely fast. This is however a metaphor that you can become fast. No one is faster than the Flash. It is known throughout the galaxy. You can always try if you want to. Not recommended to persons under the age of 18. *Disclaimer: Please be safe when training. It is not advised to run after dark. Always tell someone you are going to jog or find a jogging partner to keep your accountable as well as safe (safety in numbers). Always consult a doctor when starting a new training program after a sedentary lifestyle.

how to stay in your

By Annelie Wessels As a student, it is always difficult to stay in your budget. Here are a few tips to help you to lower your expenses. But these are just a few examples! Use your creativity and don’t spend without taking note. Keep note (more or less) of all your expenses and plan ahead for every month.           

Drink water instead of cool drinks (it’s good for your wallet and your body) Walk instead of drive (if possible) Eat in res (or prepare your own food – stay away from restaurants and take outs) Use the Wifi (or university’s internet) instead of mobile data Don’t visit En-route too often… Be on the lookout for any midmonth or end of the month specials when buying expensive things Get club cards/loyalty cards at your usual stores (i.e. Woolworths, Checkers, Pick ‘n Pay, Clicks, Myog, Spar) Stay away from the Neelsie to avoid emotional eating Exercise: do Kayla in res or walk/jog with friends (it’s free!) Buy exam pads, workbooks, pens etc. at supermarkets like Checkers and Spar and not in the Neelsie Make use of all the specials you can get your hands on!!

A few specials* to take note of:      

Domino’s: Any large traditional pizza for R49,90 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Sgt Pepper: 2 for 1 pizza on Tuesdays. De La Paix: A burger and a beer for R65 on Fridays from 12:00 to 18:00. Oude Werf Hotel (restaurant) has end of the month specials for students. Myog promise to have winter specials every month. Clicks has midmonth specials every month such as 3 for 2 and a lot of discount.

*Brutus is not responsible for any special that is incorrect or no longer valid.

In en Om Kampus... Your Stellenbosch Bucket List By Stefani van der Merwe

The Spice Route is net buitekant die pragtige 9. Met ’n panoramiese uitkyk oor wingerde en Tafelberg as agtergrondversiering, slaan The Spice Route ’n mens se asem weg. Basic Bistro-melkskommels. Pynappel, mango en kersies klink dalk soos iets wat in ’n gesonde ontbyt hoort, maar maak geen fout nie - ’n vrugtemelkskommel by hierdie oulike kafee, gee vrugte nuwe lewe. Wie hou dan nie van vrugte nie? Wel, nie heeltemal vrugte nie. Vrugtegeur… Gemeng met roomys. Goed, vrugteskommel. Ag, ’n melkskommel, gaan drink net ’n melkskommel. Gaan eet ’n wafel saam met jou kamermaat by De Warenmarkt.

. Gaan eet ’n stuk koek by Birdcage. Hoe klink ’n Nutella-kaaskoek, Butterscotchcupcake, Oreo-koek of ’n pekanneut-tert vir jou? Maak ’n dag-uitstappie Kaapstad toe.

12. Kyk ’n US lunch hour concert. Het iemand gesê “gratis”? 13. Gaan swem in Jonkershoek se watervalpoele. 14. Root 44. 16. Tokara is definitief iets wat by jou lysie moet kom. Pragtige argitektuur, goeie kos en gratis wynproe. Stylvol en tydloos. 17. Gaan hou ’n piekniek op Nerina se voorgras. 18. Gaan kyk ’n konsert by Kirstenbosch. 19. Stellenbosch se best kept secret is beslis Amazink.

Kyk ’n fliek by Pulp cinema. Gaan vir ’n dag see toe. Swemklere, sonbril, 20. Gaan slaap oor by ’n mede-Nerina in haar kamer - ’n lekker fliek, springmielies, koffie en roomysgeld, padkos, lekker liedjies en oorslaap is ’n goeie kombinasie. fantastiese geselskap. 10 Nerina hacks you wish you knew earlier By Mari-Louise Vermaak

1.

A magnetic note pad can be your best friend. Put it on your fridge and you will never lose a note with important info ever again.

2.

If you live on the outside the chances are good that you have blinds. Keep your blinds down to keep the sun out during the day and close them during night so they can serve as curtains #2in1.

3.

Order a double standard meal when the food is especially nice (read: Wednesday lunch) and freeze one to eat for another meal instead of buying expensive frozen meals.

4.

Get a plant. It might seem silly but having a plant in your room increases the amount of oxygen in the room and it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you are able to keep it alive. If you don’t have green fingers, just get an “easy” plant like a cactus.

5.

Collect take-away menus and store them in a box. This makes it easy to see what options you have as well as which places deliver.

6.

Seat cushions. You will only realise the true value of this when you actually have one and you can’t remember how you coped without it.

7.

Hanging up your straightener and hairdryer on those plastic stick on hooks in your cupboard, or even under your desk, can save you a lot of time and space.

8.

Residence rooms don’t always smell the way your room at home did. Fix this by getting yourself one of those self-spray air fresheners that go off every 30 minutes.

9.

Washietape borders are totally a thing. Being in res and not being able to hang up frames does not need to be a problem. Simply stick your photo onto the wall and frame it with washietape and you are good to go.

10. Invest in a good pair of slops/plakkies. Even though you are used to going barefoot wherever you come from, res-floors can be very dirty and wearing plakkies can help you avoid going to wash your feet AGAIN before bed.
