from the

Editor ♥ To my beautiful Nerina sisters “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” - Steve Jobs If I have learned one thing this year, it is that we are our own biggest limiting factor, we are our own biggest critic and our own biggest obstacle. We are holding ourselves back from achieving great things. Possibilities begin and end with our very own minds. Nothing in life comes easy. If you think that you make too many mistakes, then you are wrong. The only real mistake that you can make, is making the same mistake twice. Any other mistake simply means that you are trying something new - and eventually you will succeed. The most successful people are the ones who kept on trying even when all hope seemed lost. The past year and a half in Nerina has shown me that at the end of the day, we are all the same. We all want the same thing - love - we just have different ways of showing it. They say that love is blind, but I believe it is us who are blind to love. We focus on each others weaknesses instead of uplifting their strengths. We focus on how to make our lives better instead of focussing on changing someone else's life. Don’t let anyone stop you from getting in the way of your dreams, just make sure that in the process, you don’t stop anyone else from achieving theirs. Love to you all ♥ Megan Payne 4

WINE TASTINGS Tried & tested With 4 wine routes, over 50 wine estates and an astonishing amount of wine tastings offered, choosing where to go for a wine tasting can be quite a headache. The following wine tastings has been tried and tested, and I can recommend them to any student.

PETER FALKE Probably the only wine tasting open after 5pm (Open Tuesdays to Sunday 11am to 7pm), Peter Falke wine estate is perfect for an after class adventure. With beautiful gardens and beanbag seats on their lawn, it is best to visit the wine estate on a sunny day to appreciate its full beauty. TOKARA Free wine tasting. Need I say more? Although, if you are more than three people, they are quite skimpy with the amount of wine they pour. DELHEIM Delheim offers a wonderful wine and cupcake pairing (4 wines and cupcakes) for only R75 per person. During winter months, they also occasionally offer pancake and wine pairings. Furthermore, their informal wine tasting of 5 wines for R25 can definitely be recommended. DELAIRE GRAFF With a luxurious lounge and atmosphere, Delaire Graff is perfect for a “pretend we are posh afternoon. However, at only R30 for wine tasting of 5 wines complete with a full analysis and explanation of the wine making process of each wine, it is quite a bargain. 8

NEETHLINGSHOF Neethlingshof has beautiful gardens as well as an open cellar to explore and offers a wine tasting of five wines at R40 per person. However, they are best known for their “Flash food slow wine” pairing where you can pick five wine and bite size fast food (hamburger, samosa etcetera) pairings for R95. BRENAISSANCE Brenaissance’s Café Blanc De Noir is the perfect hideout during rainy weather and has a cozy atmosphere. Renowned for their pizzas, they offer a wine and pizza pairing (4 wines, 8 slices of pizza) for R175. However, on Fridays they have a special of R110 for the pairing. Open Wednesdays - Sundays, 11am - 4pm. BEYERSKLOOF Perhaps the best known wine farm and tasting room amongst students, Beyerskloof wine tasting is an integral part of the student lifestyle. BLAAUWKLIPPEN Blaauwklippen offers a wonderful chocolate and wine paring for R90 where 5 wines are paired with different chocolates. They also offer gin tastings for R30. SOMERBOSCH Wine infused ice cream might just be the best creation known to mankind. And Somerbosch offers a wine and wine infused ice cream pairing at R45 per person, 7 days a week from nine to five. However, booking is essential. Elsa Mijburgh 9

So here is a quick recap of some of the most important news from the past eight months…

NASA's Juno spacecraft entered orbit around Jupiter and began a 20-month survey of the planet.

BEST SUNGLASSES FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE | ELSA MIJBURGH

ROUND FACE Square or strong frames that contrasts your face shape, such as wayfarers, cat eyed glasses or square glasses are the best for round faces.

SQUARE FACE Choose sunglasses to contrast your sharp facial features such as aviators, round/oval sunglasses and shield sunglasses. Opt for dark or bold frames.

14

HEART FACE Choose sunglasses with frames that are thicker at the bottom and thin on top to balance your face shape and narrow chin. Round, Wayfarer or Cat eye sunglasses work best and pin details will draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones.

LONG FACE Choose oversized sunglasses that widens your cheekbones and stay away from thin frames. Some aviators and wayfarers can also work.

Ever wondered why everyone is out running and walking around in their gym outfits after 5pm? Well, summer is coming! So, naturally, everyone is getting Summer-ready! And so should you! Let's look at a couple of ways to get you out of your winter rut and start getting your body in shape for that bikini you have been dying to buy.

1. NEW GYM GEAR Yes, as students we do not have cash to spend on new gym clothes but buying affordable items might help your budget out a little. New gym gear really motivates you to get out and show off a little. It is the mental boost you need to start. After all, why would you buy a cute crop top and leave it lying in the cupboard?

2. GYM BUDDY We living in a residence filled with ‘gym gurus’, ‘not so athletic’ but also the ‘I try’ gym ladies. Go around and knock on some doors. Get yourself a workout partner who can help motivate you when excuses come around. Having someone there really helps you stay on top of your game and ultimately you can achieve

3. CHANGE THE WAY YOU WAKE UP EVERYDAY Waking up in winter can be quite tough especially if your bed seems much more rewarding than the outside cold world. If you wake up every morning telling yourself; “I can't wait to come back and sleep again”, then you will definitely be in no mood to actually workout. Change your alarm tone, switch off that head banging, annoying alarm tone that makes you cringe each time you think about getting up. Change it to something that gets you going such as your favourite song or even something soothing. Start your day properly and in that way you would have a better positive outlook.

16

“Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going” 4. TIME FOR NEW MUSIC! It is time to get rid of that playlist you know from back to front and even in shuffle mode. Get some new music, search new hot tracks that will keep you inspired. Ask someone for some tunes that they listen to while working out, perhaps it is exactly what you need.

5. GET ENOUGH SLEEP There is just not enough time to get all your work done. It makes life even harder when you have to steal an extra hour to workout but listen to this, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training, also known as Burst Training. HIIT workouts are timed intervals designed to be total body & super intense), is the perfect quick workout you need when you do not have time. Once you’ve done your HIIT workout and got all the academic work done. GET SOME REST. According to Kayla Itsines blog, having a lack of sleep does more harm than good. When you’re lacking in sleep, your body produces more grehlin (the hormone that makes you feel hungry) and less leptin (the hormone that helps you to feel full). This means that you are generally hungrier and are less likely to feel full after our meals. I’m sure we can all relate to the feeling of not only being tired but being hungry = not a great combo!

So girls, remember to be kind to yourself but also discipline yourself. Summer is 2 months away! Better get crackin’

‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature s changing course, untrimm’d; But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest; So long as men can breath, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

YOUR BEST

(Excerpt: “Suzie Bitner Was Afraid of the Drain” by Barbara Vance)

If you always try your best Then you’ll never have to wonder About what you could have done If you’d summoned all your thunder And if your best Was not as good As you hoped it would be, You still could say, “I gave today All that I had in me.”

Staying Motivated... Everyone always assures us that everything happens for a reason, but what happens when everything keeps going wrong and you just can’t seem to see the light ahead.? We often get so caught up in our problems and distresses that we forget that everyone else is fighting their own battles. 1. Speak to others. Share your heart. Chances are good that they too will open up and you will begin to realize that you’re not alone. 2. Whenever you are feeling down, sit with your friends and just enjoy their company. 3. If you can’t find peace in your own situation, focus on finding joy in someone else’s happiness. Be happy because they are.

24

4. Get out and do some exercise. We all hate this one, but it really does work. Get some fresh air, even if that just means taking your blanket out onto the grass and reading a book. 5. Stay away from negative people. If someone isn’t speaking life into you, you don’t need to deal with them right now. 6. Listen to music, or play an instrument if you can. Music has this incredible way of warming our hearts. 7. Pray. Pray to whoever and whatever you believe in. 8. Drink some tea or coffee. Don’t try and eat away the feelings, believe me, it doesn’t work. Take your warm mug outside with you and sit on a bench and just appreciate the day. 9. Make someone else happy. If you can’t find it in yourself to smile, then focus on making someone else smile. You will find that our truest joy stems from the satisfaction of making a difference in someone else's life. 10. Believe in a better tomorrow. If today is the worst day of your life, then tomorrow can only be better +
