Baton Rouge Council Votes to Annex Mall of Louisiana, Hospitals The Baton Rouge Metro Council voted 9-3 Wednesday to approve the annexation of the Mall of Louisiana and two major local hospitals into the city of Baton Rouge, a move that has major ramifications for the effort to incorporate the city of St. George. The mall, which is in the area proposed to be part of the new city, is a key sales tax revenue generator for the parish, and annexation would allow the city-parish to keep that money in its coffers. But the annexation carries the risk that, because it changes the borders of the proposed city, it might invalidate the St. George petition. While the agenda items only concerned the annexations of the mall, Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, Baton Rouge General Medical Center’s Bluebonnet campus, and another property owned by Level Ventures, Wednesday night’s discussion became a broader debate on the proposed incorporation. “I stand here today as a uniter, not a divider,” Mayor Kip Holden said, pushing for the annexations. “I stand here and say the question is, are we going to draw a dividing line, or are we going to work together for the future of everybody.” It also came down to a question of the right to self-determination, and what it means for the right of the mall and other property owners to seek annexation, when it could disrupt the right of the St. George supporters to follow the incorporation process. Council Member Joel Boe said it was the most important decision

The Alabama boxer was to become governor of Alabama, George Wallace, and the LSU boxer was Al Michael, who was to become one of the most iconic golfers in Baton Rouge during the decades of the 1950s to the 1970s. In the end, the vote -- which had been said to be as close as 6-6 in the days approaching the debate -- was one-sided. Only Mayor Pro Tem Chandler Loupe and council members Buddy Amoroso and Ryan Heck voted against the annexations. It’s not yet known for sure whether the annexations will invalidate the St. George petition, and the issue seems likely to end up in a judge’s hands. Leaders of the incorporation effort say they are nearly finished collecting the approximately 18,000 signatures they need by July 23 to put the issue on the November ballot. Following the meeting, St. George spokesman Lionel Rainey said that after meeting with attorneys, the campaign does not believe that the annexations will invalidate the petition, and they will continue working to finish gathering the signatures. “Now that they have the Mall of Louisiana, this should take the talk of us bankrupting the city of Baton Rouge off the table,” he said. “We hope there are no more attempts to impede the democratic process.” Metro Council members have asked the state attorney general’s office for an opinion on whether the annexations would invalidate the petition, but have not yet received

a reply. Many of the residents who spoke against the annexations raised the issue of the timing, urging council members to defer their vote until it wouldn’t be an issue for the St. George petition.
But council member C. Denise Marcelle said the timing is not an issue because St. George doesn’t exist yet. “If it takes them five years, do you want the Mall of Louisiana, the hospitals and everyone else to wait

New Orleans Adds Nearly 9,000 Residents in 2013, Baton Rouge Stays Same While New Orleans continues its steep population climb toward pre-Hurricane Katrina levels, Baton Rouge’s population has remained flat in recent years. Just last year, the Crescent City gained 8,800 people from July 2012 to July 2013, the latest U.S. Census Bureau population data released Thursday (May 22) indicate. The population growth rate of New Orleans since 2010 hit double digits, at 10.1 percent growth as of July 1, 2013. The 2013 population of 378,715 in New Orleans represents 83 percent of the city’s estimated population of 455,000 in August 2005, just before damage associated with the storm and levee breaks flooded much of the city and scattered its residents. Meanwhile in East Baton Rouge Parish, the population has remained nearly stagnant, growing since 2010 by only 1.1 percent. The population grew in one year, from July 2012 to July 2013, by less than 1,000 people. East Baton Rouge Parish’s 2013 population was 445,227, which includes both the incorporated city of Baton Rouge -- which had a population of 230,058 in 2012 -- the unincorporated area known as St. George and the cities

She has taught Political Science at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, where she also did work towards a doctorate. Thomas-Greenfield told the audience that her accomplishments were something that she hoped would impress some students to consider Foreign Service. But the bigger message she said she wanted to get across to the students is “that I am from Baker.” Baker officials point out that the 122 graduates is the largest class in at least 10 from the school. They also note that the graduates are the first to have begun their high school careers in the system’s Ninth Grade Success Academy. The Academy provides additional educational and social experiences and stresses building test-taking skills for the students throughout their high school careers.

USDA To Offer Free Meals For EBR 8th-Grade Student To Be Honored By Mayor Holden Children, Youth This Summer And Metro Council
Grads from page 2 yearlong celebration 100-year anniversary of the school’s relocation from New Orleans to its site on Scott’s Bluff. She told the graduates to reflect on “what has been accomplished since the school began with one building and 47 students…and 9 professors… what a century that has been delivered to you.” “Take a deep breath,” she said, and take time to understand what “this extraordinary school” has accomplished. During Friday’s ceremony, Southern paid tribute to and recognized its graduate class of 1964 on the 50th anniversary of their graduation. The participants were given medals and treated to a dinner in their honor on Thursday night. Leading in the spring graduates was the Chief Student Marshal, Christine Baker, a 22 year-old from DeQuincy, La. She is graduating with a 3.85 GPA. The Political Science major said she was stunned to be named the top grad. “I was surprised. Even though I know that throughout my college career I’ve tried my best to maintain my grades and do all I can, I didn’t realize that I would become the top grad. So it is really amazing,” said Baker. It is amazing as well, she said, because this is something of a gift for her late father. Two years ago, Baker’s father lost his battle with prostate cancer. “He wanted me to continue to do my best, so it is a really good feeling to do this for him,” said Baker. “I recently found out that when my dad was younger, he wanted to attend Southern but ended up going a different route,” said Baker, making her degree from Southern even more special. Before arriving at Southern, Baker had never heard of the university. Not until a church member and SU Board of Supervisors member Ann A. Smith introduced Southern to her.
Free Meals For EBR Children
BATON ROUGE — Any child 18 years old or younger in East Baton Rouge Parish is eligible to receive free meals through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, regardless of household income. School districts sponsor the program and other community organizations for children and youth summer activities, including summer schools, camps, and vacation Bible schools. However, children do not need to be part of a summer school or camp to receive free meals. During the school year, 21 million U.S. children receive free and reduced-price meals through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. But when school is out, many children relying on these school meals go hungry. To fill this gap, the USDA provides free, nutritious summer meals to schools and other ap-
proved sites. Schools and other sites with more than 100 children are typically eligible for meal delivery while sites with less than 100 children would need to transport children to an open site. This summer, the program will have more than 80 dining centers in East Baton Rouge Parish, which are identified on the map at http://healthybr.com/ healthy-eating/summer-feedingprogram.aspx Sponsors for East Baton Rouge Parish Summer Food Service Program include the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, Central Community School System, the City of Baker School System, the Big Buddy Program, and the Particular Council of St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge. Several other community organizations operate closed sites, meaning those sites serve only
while opponents wore “Better Together” pins. One side of the council chambers was filled with uniformed Baton Rouge firefighters, whose union opposes the incorporation. The leaders of the St. George effort did not speak at Wednesday’s meeting, leaving the speeches to other supporters from the area. They included at least three who said they are public school parents with students at schools including Woodlawn High School in the St. George area and the prestigious Baton Rouge Magnet High in the city of Baton Rouge. They said the new city is needed so they can improve the schools in their area, and one father said his daughter at Baton Rouge Magnet High gets a much better education than his children at Woodlawn. One St. George supporter, Peggy Gonzales, called the mall annexation an “asinine effort.” She said residents in the unin-
corporated area have “tried three decades of marriage counseling” with the city, and it hasn’t worked. “We want a D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” she said, spelling out the word. Supporters of the annexation said the Metro Council should respect the rights of the property owners to ask for annexation. They also spoke more broadly about the potential impacts of the incorporation. “I am for annexation to help reduce the likelihood of bankruptcy of the city of Baton Rouge,” if St. George comes to be, said one resident, William Sanner. “If the city of Baton Rouge goes bankrupt... home values will decrease, the crime will increase, we will lose businesses from the area.”

For more information about the program, residents can contact the East Baton Rouge Parish School System at (225) 226-3604 or the Big Buddy Program (225) 3889737. Baker residents can contact the City of Baton School System at (225) 774-5795 and Central residents can call the Central Community School System (225) 650-2918 or (225) 650-2919.

Because of the hospital’s geographic location, which provides a contiguous path for the city to annex the mall, they are affecting the issue in one way or another, no matter what they do. “By not delaying our decision... the Baton Rouge General’s board of trustees believes that our community and the city of St. George effort can progress in a more informed manner,” she said, since the incorporation effort will have a firmer grasp on the tax revenue they will have to work with. People on both sides of the issue packed the council chambers and flowed over into the lobby outside. Supporters of St. George wore navy blue “I’m In” t-shirts,

Last week, Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School student Jalen Scott flew to Africa as the only student in the United States invited to an international science competition. The eighth grader returned home Sunday to Baton Rouge with the grand prize for the best project. Jalen captured the top award for having the best overall project in last week’s Golden Climate International Environmental Project Olympiad in Nairobi, Kenya. Jalen was the only U.S. finalist selected to participate in the competition, which featured dozens of the top middle school and high school students from more than 35 countries. Golden Climate is a non-profit group that focuses on raising awareness of environmental issues and encouraging students to participate in conservation efforts. “When they called my name as the winner, I got real nervous,” Jalen said. “My legs started shaking, and I was afraid I couldn’t walk.” Jalen, who was accompanied to Kenya by his father and science teacher, managed to make it to the stage to accept the grand award, formally known as the Wangari Maathai Special Award. The award is named for Maathai, the Kenyan environmentalist who, in 2004, became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace. “Jalen Scott’s accomplishments are nothing short of amazing and show the world that we are developing some of the best minds in science fields right here in Baton Rouge,” said Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden. “I
8th-Grade Student To Be Honored By Mayor Holden And Metro Council couldn’t be more proud that his innovative ideas not only benefit current students, but will also help him achieve his own dreams.” Mayor Holden plans to make a special presentation and proclamation in Jalen’s honor at the next East Baton Rouge Parish Metropolitan Council meeting on May 14. Jalen’s project started as a science fair project last year that studied elevated lead levels in several playgrounds in East Baton Rouge Parish. The project attracted national attention after his results were published in an academic journal, and he was invited to Washington, D.C., where he met with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Kenilworth is an openenrollment charter school that serves students in grades 6-8. The school focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses and activities and is an educational and community leader, hosting the Louisiana STEM Expo and the Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad.

The Browning of Public Schools after ‘Brown’
What is going on in the Congress of South African Trade Unions?
By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist
By Bill Fletcher, Jr. NNPA Columnist
This is the 60th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision outlawing “separate but equal” schools. And like most major anniversaries, incorrect information surfaces as purported fact, doing a disservice to the accomplishment being celebrated as well as truth itself. In this instance, some have asserted that because of re-segregation, public schools in the South, where most African Americans live, are more segregated now than when Brown was handed down. That is simply untrue and if you want to read a comprehensive account of what has truly happened in school desegregation over the past 60 years, there is no better source than “Brown at 60: Great Progress, a Long Retreat and an Uncertain Future,” published by The Civil Rights Project at UCLA. First, let’s dispense with the nonsense. “The claims that black students in the South are no better off than they were before Brown, in terms of segregation, are obviously wrong,” the report stated. “They are ten times as likely to be in majority-white schools as they were when the Civil Rights Act passed.” The 42-page report is packed with illuminating facts about progress made in the wake of Brown and the subsequent retrenchment. But to appreciate the significance of Brown, it is necessary to understand what our schools looked like before the court decision. “Nine years after Brown, when President John Kennedy called for the first major civil rights act of the 20th century, 99% of
The crisis that has rocked the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) over the last year has frequently been portrayed as revolving around a scandal involving the organization’s General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi. The principal leader of the largest labor federation in South Africa, Vavi was accused of conducting an inappropriate relationship with a female employee of the organization. Although Vavi publicly apologized on several occasions, he was suspended for several months, only to have been recently reinstated by an act of a South African court. The Vavi case, however, is not the main cause of the COSATU crisis. The underlying causes go back to the early days of Nelson Mandela’s administration and the decision of his government to embark on economic policies that were contrary to those originally promised by the African National Congress in its fight with the apartheid regime. The ANC had advanced the need for the nationalization of key industries and the establishment of major social development programs. In 1996 the government suddenly reversed course and instituted a new economic program called Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR). Despite the name, it was a program that conformed to the sorts of economic biases very common in the 1990s (and today), including privatization, downsizing, and elimination of trade barriers. South African workers were hurt very badly by this change and a struggle began to emerge within COSATU over how the labor unions should respond to anti-worker policies that their
blacks in the South were still in totally segregated schools,” the report recounted. “Virtually no whites were in historically black schools, nor were black teachers and administrators in white schools. For all practical purposes, it was segregation as usual or ‘segregation forever,’ as some of the South’s politicians promised. In the great majority of the several thousand southern districts nothing had been done.” Actually, there were two Brown decisions. The first, issued in 1954, outlawed segregated public schools masquerading as “separate but equal.” The court ruled that “segregation is inherently unequal” and ordered the desegregation of schools. With no progress after a year, the court ordered in 1955, in a ruling sometimes called Brown II, that desegregation had to be carried out “with all deliberate speed.” But racial segregation was
deliberate and speed was missing in action. In fact, nine years after Brown, 99 percent of Blacks in the South were still in segregated schools. “President Lyndon Johnson powered the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act through Congress with bipartisan support, and he proceeded to enforce civil rights law more forcefully than an Administration before or since,” the report stated. “After he also led the battle for the largest federal education aid program in American history, the Southern schools changed. Faced with the dual prospect of losing federal funds if they remained segregated, as well as the threat of a Justice Department lawsuit as a result of the Civil Rights Act, almost all the districts began to desegregate. Strongly backed by the federal courts, federal civil rights officials raised desegregation requirements each year. In 1968 the Supreme Court unanimously
ruled that desegregation in the historically segregated states must be comprehensive and immediate. By 1970 Southern schools became the nation’s most integrated.” Nationwide, the percent of Blacks attending majority White schools has declined from a high of 43.5 percent in 1988 to 23.2 percent in 2011, about the same level it was 1968. This did not happen by accident. “Throughout the l980s there was a strong legal attack on desegregation orders, led by the Reagan and Bush administrations’ Justice Departments and, in l991, the Supreme Court authorized the termination of desegregation plans in the Oklahoma City (Dowell) decision. allies–the ANC–were advancing. Over the last several years, General Secretary Vavi has become an outspoken critic of the ANC-led government of Jacob Zuma, particularly on matters of economic policy. Events became more intense when striking miners from a union that was not affiliated with COSATU, were gunned down at the Marikana mines in 2012. The horror of this act sent shock waves throughout South Africa, including but not limited to COSATU. Several unions that have been affiliated with COSATU began to raise questions about not only what had happened, but also the role of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM, a COSATU affiliate) in the tragedy. As criticisms of the Zuma administration heightened, and as Vavi seemed to be a leading critic, a lineup within COSATU emerged that included unions that saw themselves as defenders of the ANC and the alliance that has existed between the ANC and COSATU. In that context, the allegations against Vavi have little to do with the actual facts of the incident. Vavi apologized repeatedly for inappropriate conduct, yet the anti-Vavi forces in COSATU saw this as their chance to remove him from the scene and to consolidate COSATU as an uncritical ally of the Zuma administration and the ANC. While it is the case that Vavi has been, at least for now, restored to office and the ANC is helping to facilitate discussions between Vavi and his detractors, the focus on the individual misses the larger situation. To what extent will COSATU see itself as reaching out to the growing chorus of soSee UNIONS, on page 7

ASK THE CHURCH LADY Hey Babies! How ya’ll doing? Did everybody have a good week? I hope so. Chile seems like the time just flies by. Sundays here and then before you know it we are almost back to the weekend again. Well ya’ll folk are still writing to me for advice. Now I thought that surely after I responded to that lonely mother that ya’ll would leave me alone, but ut uh…now people want to keep writing me with all their drama. So I tell you what, if they keep on writing me, I am just keep on keeping it real and since ya’ll want to keep asking me what I think then don’t get surd when I start telling it like it TI is. So here it goes…
Baby, first off I would hate to see the day when a three year old comes in and thinks he can take charge of my house! Somebody is gonna be wrapping me up in one of those white jackets that cover

your arms and tie behind your back because they’ll be taking me to Mandeville. Chile, girlfriend don’t play that I’ll tadatasup . Oh Lord forgive me, I had a momentary relapse. The Bible says train up a child in the way they should go… Did you train Junior because evidently he got stuck on stupid. Then I’ll bet he went out and married another stupid, and now they want you to clean up the mess they’ve made. Girl you’re good because you see me. I’d fix their butts. I would tell them I wanted some quality time with my grandson, and while he was there I would give him so much sugar that it would have him running around in circles. But wait; don’t give it to him until about thirty minutes before it’s time to take him home or for them to pick him up. While you are feeding him the candy you can use a little suggestive hypnosis. Just say “junior, when you get home just tear up the house mommy and daddy don’t care; they like stuff everywhere.” But make sure that when you are here that you are a good boy and grandma will always give you See CHURCH LADY, on page 7
She sits on the second pew every Sunday raising her hands in praise. She looks okay; I mean she is dressed up all the time… the big hat, designer shoes, and lots of bling; that’s what a church lady is supposed to look like; isn’t it? Nobody here needs to know that beneath that hat she’s battling the big “C”. He is always smiling and if you ask him how he’s doing, you’ll always hear a robust “Blessed!” yet behind that smile is deep pain; it’s only been six months since he lost his wife of forty years and evenings at home are a little hard; is it possible that he might be just a little bit depressed? He lost his job, not long after his wife ran off leaving him to raise three children alone, But he still shows up faithfully to all of the church meetings; men’s fellowship, prayer meeting, choir rehearsal and outreach on Saturday morning…that’s what a good deacon is supposed to do; spend all of his time at church… right? She is single, sings in the choir, never married; all of the mothers want to know when she’s going to get a husband; doesn’t the bible says “he” that finds a wife, finds a good thing? Everyone notices that she is alone, but has anyone considered that she might also be… lonely? He’s a little bit feminine, but he grew up in here and we all attribute it to the fact that he’s an only child raised by a single mother; he brought up the question in his
Sunday school class “What are you supposed to do if you feel like you have feelings for the same sex?” The kids laughed and the Sunday school teacher pretended like he didn’t hear him. Hmm… maybe if we ignore it, it will just go away, and so will he... She grew up in purity classes and she’s all grown up now; this is baby number three and we’re having another shower, but no one wants to talk about sex in the Christian education curriculum; really? …The divorce is finally final, but we’re not supposed to talk about that up in here…are we? I mean the church celebrates marriage and even when it’s on the rocks we don’t dare let on even if he’s beating on me or she’s cheating on me; particularly when we are the pastor’s spouse…Right? May is mental health awareness month. I wrote this article a while back, but now seems like the perfect time to address these issues; so I’m going to. I hope that you will read all three parts; this one and the two that will follow then pass them on to your pastors and your churches; please let’s not let the church continue to suffer in silence. Why are the saints of God sick, sad and suffering in secret? Okay, for starters let’s call the devil a liar and stop him from keeping us in the bondage of denial and “Denial” is not a river in Egypt church people. What am I talking about? I’m glad that you asked. I’m talking about the fact that the moral majority of
African American “church folk” and/or “Christians” are encouraged to not even admit to being sick, being sad or suffering in any way. Yet, statistics say that an overwhelming number of African Americans in the church are dying, divorcing, and diagnosed with more mental illness than any other time in history. According to black news.com there has been a 23% increase in African Americans reporting depression in 2010 in comparison to 2005. With all of the economic upheaval in the last couple of years; I am sure that these numbers have doubled if not tripled by now. Greater still, the numbers are in all probability even higher, because blacks tend to see depression as a stigma and personal weakness, and won’t acknowledge it. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among men 25- 44 years of age according to Dr. Larry Taylor, PhD. As stated in a 2008 study conducted by the Christian Post; the divorce rate for Christians was identical to the national average. Black teens have increased in pregnancy after a ten-year decline based on an article in USA Today.com, 2010. Henceforth, there are active members of our congregations infected with HIV/AIDS because Wikipedia acknowledges that African Americans make up 49% of HIV positive individuals. However, we don’t want to talk about this because you

Dear Church Lady, My grandbaby is three years old and I love him so much, but lately he has been acting out and my son and daughter in-law can’t seem to get a grip on him. The stand by and watch him ransack my house when they come over and won’t stop him or spank him. Then when I try to chastise him they say that I am being mean and that I don’t have patience for kids. So you know that my daughter-inlaw even tried to make me feel bad by saying, “Mother do you want this baby to grow up thinking that you are a mean and grouchy old lady”? The nerve of her! I don’t know what to do. Please help me Church lady. Signed Desperate grandma

Church from page 6 lots of candy. Now as for that daughter-in-law of yours… well Chile you better pray for her because if it were me, I would really need a little more Jesus to keep me from almost cussing her; hee, hee. I mean talking to her… Ouwee I don’t know what is happening to me today? And let’s not forget about that son of yours well, unless you want to leave here knowing that you’ll be making a lifetime contribution to the dumb, dumber and dummy club then girl spend your money and travel because if you are not at home then they can’t come over anyway! It’s tight but it’s right; just keeping it real, just keeping it real. Hee, hee. Lord ham mercy you know I’m getting to old for this. But anyway baby, not trying to be mean and grouchy like you, hee, hee just kidding. Babies look you all better get these children in check before they get you out in public and make you shame. Some of ya’ll need to be shame though because you’re suppose d to raise your children at your own
house and not wait until they go to your mama and nem house or at the Walmart or in church and start making you shame and worrying the devil out of everybody else.. Then you get to lying; talking bout Lord I don’t know what is wrong with this boy? You know what’s wrong with him! You should have put a hand or a belt to his bottom and spanked his rump before he left your house. The bible says train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. You’re right he won’t depart from it because every time he remembers those whippings he’ll straighten hisself up. You know this younger generation though; they want to talk and play with their children. Children have enough friends! Be the parent. Honey tell your children ‘Be the parent”, and I hate to say it boo, but you might need to revisit that process too. I love ya’ll my darlings, but I’ve got to go. Stay sane (send your grand- children home to the parents) stay saved, and I’ll see ya’ll in church.

Brown from page 4 poverty. “In schools that are 81-100% black & Latino, over threequarters of the students are also enrolled in schools where more than 70% of the students live in poverty,” it stated. “In fact, half of students in 91-100% black & Latino schools are in schools that also have more than 90% lowincome students. This means that these students face almost total isolation not only from white and Asian students but also from middle class peers as well.” In its recommendations section, the report observes that while education is primarily a state responsibility, the federal government also has an important role to play. Sadly, the report points out, there has not been a major national study on school desegregation, its costs and solutions since Racial Isolation in Public
Schools, a report requested in 1967 by President Johnson. Non-government organizations also have a role to play. The report stated, “Civil rights organizations need to develop new strategies and legal theories to end the reversal and restart the movement toward a successfully integrated, truly multiracial society, as was done by the NAACP and Howard University in the campaign that led to Brown.” George E. therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hands of God, that he may exalt you in due time, “casting all your cares upon him, for he cares for you,”(1st Peter 5:6-7). You may have a stopped up nose and swollen eyes and mucus running down your lip and dried tears on your face, but you’ll feel better after emptying yourself of those things which had been heavy on your heart. Sometimes we go for weeks or months trying to take matters into our hands and try to solve our own problems. We are not super humans; we can’t handle everything alone. We need God’s help. We have to let go of those situations and let God handle them. there are some things we can’t humanly do anything about.

When asked of the public health concerns fast food may pose to students, Sylvester says restaurants are making strides to provide more nutritional foods. “Actually, McDonald’s is working on this. We don’t have to push McDonald’s to do this. They’re already doing a lot of it. Aaron Brooks, John Carney Elected to Saints Hall of Fame
NEW ORLEANS — Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks and kicker John Carney have been elected to the Saints Hall of Fame for the Class of 2014. The Saints Hall of Fame Media Selection Committee made the selections. Brooks became the Saints’ starting quarterback in November 2000, and six weeks later, he led the team to its first-ever playoff victory, a 31-28 triumph over the defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams in the Superdome. The former University of Virginia standout would remain behind center in New Orleans for the next five seasons, starting a total of 82 regular-season games for the Black and Gold. Brooks ended his Saints career by completing 56.4 percent of his passes for 19,156 yards, 120 touchdowns and 84 interceptions. His touchdown total ranks second and his yardage total third in Saints history. Brooks’ best season statistically was in 2003, when he completed a career-best 59.1 percent of his pass attempts and he had an NFL-low interception rate of 1.5 percent. Carney spent all or part of eight seasons (2001-06, 09-10) with the Saints as part of a 23-year NFL career in which he became one of only three players in history to play in four different decades and became one of seven players to score more than 2,000 career points. A product of Notre Dame, Carney connected on a franchise record 82.8 percent of his field goal attempts as a Saint. His 168 field goals made, 203 attempts and 768 points scored all rank second in team history. Of the 471 placement attempts in Carney’s career as a Saint, perhaps his most famous was the game-winning field goal in the 2005 season opener against Carolina, 13 days after Hurricane

Spurs’ Big 3 Ties Showtime Lakers Greats For Most Playoff Wins By A Trio By Eric Freeman
The San Antonio Spurs owe their historic longevity to a great number of factors, but perhaps none loom as large as the continued greatness of stars Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. On Monday night, that trio hit a milestone that helps prove just how amazing they’ve been in the context of NBA history. With the Spurs’ 122-105 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, the trio of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker achieved their 110th playoff win together. That moves them into a tie with Showtime-era Los Angeles Lakers teammates Magic Johnson, Kareem AbdulJabbar and Michael Cooper for the all-time NBA record for playoff wins by a group of three. The Spurs’ trio came together in the 2002-03 season, when Ginobili went to the NBA after a very successful career in Europe. At the time, Duncan was about to win his second-straight MVP award and the 20-year-old Parker was just starting to hone his considerable talents and become a young star. The Spurs won the NBA title that season — the first of three for this group and the second of four in the history of the franchise. Duncan, Ginobili and Parker achieved these 110 postseason wins in their 12th season together. Over that stretch, the Spurs have never missed the playoffs and lost in the first round three times. The trio of Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar and Cooper won their 110 games from the 1980-89 postseasons, over which the Lakers won five titles and failed to make the NBA Finals just twice. They also hit that mark despite playing several seasons in which the top two teams in a conference received a first-round bye to bypass a best-of-three first
NBA Initiates Charge To Terminate Donald Sterling’s Ownership Of Clippers
The NBA took the next step toward ousting Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, initiating a charge on Monday to terminate his ownership of the franchise, the league announced. Under the NBA constitution, Sterling will be provided an opportunity to respond to the charge by May 27 and has the right to appear and make a presentation at a special meeting with the league’s board of governors. Sterling’s hearing is scheduled for June 3 and will be presided by the NBA’s Board of Governors chairman and Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor. The league said in a statement that if the three-quarters vote of the other 29 Board of Governors members is met, “all ownership interests in the Clippers will be terminated and the team will be sold to new owners.” The NBA’s charge “asserts that Mr. Sterling engaged in conduct that has damaged and continues to damage the NBA and its teams.” The NBA also claims Sterling “disparaged AfricanAmericans and minorities; directed a female acquaintance not to associate publicly with AfricanAmericans or to bring AfricanAmericans to Clippers games; and criticized African-Americans for not supporting their communities.” “Mr. Sterling’s actions and positions significantly undermine the NBA’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion; damage the NBA’s relationship with its fans; harm NBA owners, players and Clippers team personnel; and impair the NBA’s relationship with marketing and merchandising partners, as well as with government and community leaders,” the NBA said in a statement. “Mr. Sterling engaged in other misconduct as
well, including issuing a false and misleading press statement about this matter. All of these acts provide grounds for termination under several provisions of the NBA constitution and related agreements.” The charges result from an audio recording released by TMZ in which Sterling tells his reported girlfriend that he does not want her posting photos of Magic Johnson on her social-media accounts and tells her not to bring African-Americans to Clippers games. NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million and announced the league would work to end his longtime ownership of the franchise. Sterling, who criticized Johnson in a later interview with CNN, has said through his lawyer that he will fight any attempt to force him to sell, and that he has no plans to pay the league’s fine. The NBA has already hired Dick Parsons as an interim CEO for the Clippers. Several notable celebrities have already expressed interest in pursuing a purchase of the Clippers, including Johnson and a group that includes Oprah Winfrey, David Geffen and Larry Ellison. Sterling’s wife, Shelly, has said she would like to remain an owner of the franchise, but the league said her stake will be terminated along with that of Sterling if the vote is approved. The Clippers were eliminated 4-2 by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the playoffs, and the players admitted the Sterling controversy had weighed on them. “Playoffs are hard enough physically,” Clippers forward Matt Barnes said. “But emotionally I think our team was stressed to the max.

The Miami Heat ‘s trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh popularized the “Big Three” label, but the San Antonio Spurs ‘ trifecta of Tim Duncan , Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili just perfected it. Manu, Duncan and Parker move past Magic, Kareem & Cooper for the @NBA ‘s most playoff wins all-time as a trio
round. For the 1984 postseason, the NBA extended the first round to a best-of-five series for all playoff participants. That didn’t change until 2003 — the first year these Spurs played together — when the first round became a best-of-seven competition. Nevertheless, what the Spurs have done is arguably just as impressive, particularly when you consider that Duncan, Parker and Ginobili have been the team’s top three scorers for all but their first and most recent two seasons together and figure to team up in at least one more postseason. Plus, their careers have occurred over a period of widespread player movement — it’s pretty much unheard of for any three teammates to play together in 12 consecutive seasons. This is not the first time that these two trios of teammates have been seen together in the record books. In March, the Spurs
passed those Lakers for most regular-season games played together and moved beyond them for second-most wins, trailing only the Boston Celt-
ics trio of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish. If the Spurs team up again in 2014-15, they should be able to grab that record, as well.
LSU from page 7 “And we do have alcohol policies in place.” Martin says the legislature didn’t ban alcohol consumption. “The legislature did not require us to ban drinking on campus and a much larger percentage of the population and our visitors engage in occasional drinking, much more than they use tobacco,” he said. According to a study she conducted, about 30 percent of LSU’s undergraduate class use tobacco products. “It’s definitely a health issue,
but its also an environmental issue because we have a huge issue with tobacco litter on this campus,” Sylvester said. She says studies show it costs the university an excess of $36,000 a year for daily cleanup of cigarette litter and that doesn’t include large events. As of now, campus police will not have authority to issue citations, but officials will be working on a campaign to inform the LSU community of the tobacco-free ban.
why does the Bible say in 2Timothy 3:12 that the Godly will suffer, yet through our suffering we will become one with Christ according to 2Timothy 2:12. Oh, but all that stuff is in the BIGS stage I guess (Before I got saved) because none of this exist in the life of a true believer, right? There is never a dark day, or a depressed moment and heaven forbid that you should consider ending it all! What kind of Christian would that make you? A “real” one perhaps? The entire basis of the Bible is to help believers overcome and cope with these ills. The word clearly tells us they overcame by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimonies (Rev. 12:1)…This book is the Christian text that we study to pass the test so we can have the “testimony.” Oh, but I forgot that we cut that part out of our services because we don’t have test anymore. The devil is a liar! The Bible was written because tests do still “exist” and so do testimonies. However, you can’t have one without the other. To say that they are nonexistent in the church is saying that the word of God is a lie. All we have to do is flip thru the pages of the “good book” and we will see countless “Christians” found in all of these conditions. For instance, the woman with the issue of blood was sick! It says right
in the scripture that she had an “issue” and everybody knew it because they were all talking about her. But until she and her issue found their way to Jesus amidst all of the church people, she could not be healed. Then her faith made her whole, but it was after twelve long years I might add. Paul the powerful preaching man of God declared that he had an infirmity that he begged to have taken away… (The thorn in his flesh; see 2Corinthian 12:7) yet the Lord did not take it away, but he kept him in spite of his infirmity. Elijah, the prophet who commanded the rain to stay and to fall, and who called down fire from heaven; got so depressed after this that he went into a cave and contemplated killing himself (I Kings 19:4 -Yes he thought of committing suicide). Finally, David the man after God’s own heart experienced such deep despair that he was hiding as he was hunted down by his king, and even by his own son and these were not punishments for his sin. (Note I Sam. 29) So now we can clearly see that being depressed, diseased and in despair does happen to the saints and not just the sinners; Now what? First things first; we must tell the truth, and that’s exactly what I plan to do so make sure to read part two of this article in the next edition.
