Robin Williams Good Morning America Star Robin Roberts’ Louisiana Supreme Court Announces the Election of Dead at 63 Plight Inspires Local Bone Marrow Drive Two Judicial Judges in Suspected Suicide
Robin Williams Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams, who dazzled in such wide-ranging dramatic and comedic roles as alien, nanny, therapist and cartoon genie during a four-decades long career, was found dead in his northern California home in a suspected suicide Monday. He was 63. The Marin County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that Williams was found unconscious and not breathing in his home around noon. The statement said the investigation into Williams’ death is ongoing, but the coroner “suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia.” The Marin County coroner’s office said Williams was last seen alive at home at about 10 p.m. Sunday. An emergency call from his house in Tiburon was placed to the Sheriff’s Department shortly before noon Monday. A representative for Williams said in a statement the actor had been battling “severe depression of late.” “This is a tragic and sudden loss,” Mara Buxbaum said. “The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.” Williams’ wife Susan Schneider said in a statement she is devastated and asked for privacy. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings,” she said. “I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.” Williams publicly struggled with addiction during his career and most recently went to rehab in June to “fine tune” his sobriety, his rep said at the time. The rehab stint would have gone unnoticed, except that the comedian opted to pose with a fan for a photo at a Dairy Queen near the facility, and the picture eventually went viral. Williams had spoken openly about his cocaine addiction, which plagued him during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Later, in 2006, he said he was

By Amber Stegall BATON ROUGE, LA - Two Malayan tiger cubs were born in BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo on July 29, 2014. The cubs are currently in the tiger den with their mother and will remain there until they are old enough to come out on the exhibit. The two cubs are the first tiger cubs born at the Baton Rouge Zoo in almost 25 years, and the fifth and sixth Malayan cubs born in the U.S. this year. The Malayan subspecies is the smallest of the tiger species and was first recognized in 2004. With an estimated 500 or fewer existing in the wild, they are currently identified as Endangered with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The primary threats against the subspecies have been habitat loss and poaching. Their natural range stretches from Thailand to the Malay Peninsula, which in recent years has had an increase of deforestation and urban sprawl. “The Baton Rouge Zoo is
an active participant in tiger conservation, and the birth of these cubs is just one piece of what we do,” said Frost. “The responsible breeding of Malayan tigers in accordance with the SSP provides a genetically diverse tiger population to serve as somewhat of a ‘genetic insurance policy’ for their wild counterparts.” The SSP is a program through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that the Baton Rouge Zoo participates in, as well as all accredited zoos across the country. The goal of the SSP is to maintain a healthy population among endangered animals that is both genetically diverse and demographically stable. In addition to the participation in SSP, the Baton Rouge Zoo also supports projects internationally that are dedicated to mitigating human-tiger conflict, protecting tiger habitats, researching tiger ecology and monitoring tiger populations. “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome these cubs,” said Phil Frost, Zoo Director.
Red Cross Blood Donors Step Up, Urgent Need Remains An urgent need for blood and platelets remains, even as ten thousand blood donors have answered the urgent call to donate issued by the American Red Cross. Donors with types O negative, B negative and A negative are especially needed right now. Since the urgent request began, the Red Cross has seen an increase of approximately 9 percent in the number of donors coming to give blood, resulting in more than 10,400 additional units from what was expected. While the Red Cross is grateful for those who stepped up to give this lifesaving gift, hospital patients are still counting on generous donors to roll up a sleeve and help prevent an emergency shortage. Donations through the Red Cross were down approximately 8 percent from the beginning of May through mid-July, resulting in about 80,000 fewer donations than anticipated. Right now, blood products are being distributed to area hospitals almost as quickly as donations are coming in.
On average, the Red Cross must collect 15,000 blood donations every day for patients at about 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. It’s the blood products already on the shelves that help save lives in an emergency — such as the deadly tornado that hit Virginia Beach last week. As a national network, the Red Cross was able to send 45 units of blood and platelets to help patients in area hospitals. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days and individuals can give platelets every seven days – up to 24 times a year. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in most states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.

“This is something that’s been in the works since we first designed the Realm of the Tiger exhibit. During that process, we took into deep consideration the number of dens we would need, the subspecies of tigers that would be living there and their recommendations for breeding within the Species Survival Plan.” The cubs were born to the Zoo’s female Malayan tiger, which came to the Zoo in 2009 from the Fort Worth Zoo, and the Zoo’s male Malayan tiger, which arrived from the Little Rock Zoo in 2012. Tiger cubs typically stay in a den with their mother for eight to twelve weeks and will venture out on exhibit only after they are strong enough to navigate the space independently. “Among big cats, first-time mothers can commonly be incompetent in caring for their young which can sometimes result in none of the cubs surviving,” said Sam Winslow, Assistant Director and General Curator. “Therefore we were very pleased that two of the four cubs have survived. As with any animal birth, we’re optimistic and excited, but know that the first couple of weeks are a very delicate time in the survival of the cubs. The mother is very protective of the cubs and any interference could jeopardize them.”

LOCAL & STATE apart. You must continue to hold on to your faith and stay before the Lord. But, it may be that the time has come when you may need to take some quality time for yourself and spend some of that time with God. Get on your knees before God and tell him of how you are feeling inside. And maybe the words wont come out exactly as you wish but you can have a good weeping, wailing crying falling, out tantrum and give all those problems to him. While you are praying, you might forget some of the things that vexed you but God knows what you are going through. he can read the pain, which flows through your tears. even though he knows what’s troubling you, he still wants to tell him about it and bring your problems and burdens to him.
therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hands of God, that he may exalt you in due time, “casting all your cares upon him, for he cares for you,”(1st Peter 5:6-7). After you finished having your tantrum. You may have a stopped up nose and swollen eyes and mucus running down your lip and dried tears on your face, but you’ll feel better after emptying yourself of those things which had been heavy on your heart. Sometimes we go for weeks or months trying to take matters into our hands and try to solve our own problems. We are not super humans; we can’t handle everything alone. We need God’s help. We have to let go of those situations and let God handle them. there are some things we can’t humanly do anything about.

Sally Ann Roberts noted that only 7 percent of the 10 million people on the national bone marrow registry are African American, making it often very difficult for black people who have to go outside their family to find donations. She noted that less than a third of bone marrow donations are between family members. WWL held several registration drives on the Robin Roberts’ behalf, and GMA fans also signed up for the registry. As a result, more than 40,000 people joined the registry, she said. Two Words That Changed My Life Our Faith in Action Fellowship By: Dr. James L. Snyder
This week is a hallmark in the lives of the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and me. Forty-three years ago this week, we began a journey that has just become better with each year. That is the benefit of marrying up. Getting married was not something I had put together. Very few men put together their wedding plans. After all, that is why we get married. It came to me rather suddenly. I was at Bible College and one morning one of the guys in the dorm said to me, “Congratulations. I just heard the good news.” I smiled and nodded my head thinking about my plans for the day. I had no idea what he was talking about and at the time I did not have the time to ask him what he was talking about. Everybody I met that morning was congratulating me and telling me how happy they were for me. Soon I was beginning to wonder what in the world was going on. I did not have any test in any my classes yesterday so it could not be anything like that. I do not play the lottery so I could not have won the lottery. I could not think of anything I did yesterday that would cause all of these congratulatory remarks in my direction. Finally, when I had about as much as I could take, I asked somebody, “What is everybody congratulating me for?” The person that I queried looked at me broke out in laughter and said, “Man, you got to be kidding!” Then he turned around, walking away laughing every step
of the way. I went to my class, found my seat and got situated then one of the young ladies passed by, patted me on the shoulder and said, “I am so happy for you and I think it is a wonderful thing. And I know you are going to be happy for the rest of your life.” Well, I had had it. I looked at her and very firmly said, “What are you so happy about?” “Your wedding,” she said laughing, “you’re getting married.” “Oh,” I said, nodding my head. “Thank you very much.” Then what she said dawned on me. I looked at her and said, “I’m getting what?” “Silly boy,” she said, laughing hysterically, “It’s all over campus so it must be true.” I then had to think about this situation I was in. Everybody on the campus knew I was getting married, except me. Was I still sleeping? Was this just a dream I am having? I began to think about the events the preceding evening, and remembered a little conversation I had with the girl I was now supposed to be getting married to. In the course of our conversation, as I remembered it at the time, she said something to the effect, “Wouldn’t it be great to get married.” As I recalled the conversation, I nodded my head and said something to the effect, “Yea, I guess it would be.” That was the end of the conversation as far as I was concerned, but the beginning of an ongoing conversation as far as someone else was concerned. Why is it that the groom-
to-be is always the last one to know? Then I asked one of the girls in the hallway, “When am I getting married?” At the time, I did not have the foggiest idea. She turned away laughing and muttering to herself something to the effect that I had a really good sense of humor. Believe me, I was not laughing. As it turned out, me and the young lady I was to be married to, were engaged to be married and, I do not want to pry into this point very much, the wedding dress already purchased.” As it turned out, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Looking back over life, most of the good things that have happened to me were never of my doing. I’m convinced that is the way God works. If you are doing what you want to do, you are probably not doing what God wants you to do. At least I have developed that philosophy to this point of my life. Some things in life I am rather good at planning, a wedding not being one of them; not even close. After all these years, I can still remember that wonderful day when the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I were united in holy matrimony. Our wedding was rather simple and the focus point of the wedding was the wedding vows. When I said, “I do” it clinched the deal and I was married and I have been doing it ever since. I have said many words in my life, and written thousands and thousands of words, See LIFE, on page 5

BATON ROUGE, LA — Last year, members and friends of Together Baton Rouge contemplated the message of God to his people in scripture through Our Faith in Action, a contextual scripture study program that engaged us in reflection on what it means to answer God’s call to us in action. Every few months, we will have Faith and Fellowship gatherings at a member congregation of Together Baton Rouge, to continue our journey as people of faith and action, building stronger bonds of community in this fellowship of prayer and praise,
music and meditation. Each of the 2014 Faith and Fellowship gatherings will focus on a different theme of the work of Together Baton Rouge. The focus of this Faith and Fellowship gathering will be to understand our work in light of our calling to be salt and light in this generation. The agenda was as follow, from 6:00 - 6:30 Worship Service and from 6:30 - 7:30 table discussion and fellowship with experienced facilitators. Want To Be A Millionaire? Take Care Of A $1,000 First! By: Kemberley Washington NEW ORLEANS - Throughout life, God will bless you with an infinite amount of resources. You will be blessed with only so much time, assets and talents. With each blessing God has given you, He expects you to be a good steward of what He has blessed you with. Faithfulness creates fruitfulness How can you ask God to bless you with millions if you can’t take care of a thousand? Real financial healing takes place when you learn how to take care of the little that God has blessed you with already. Think about it, how can you desire a 3,000 square foot home, but fail to take care of your small apartment? If you want to really see blessings in your life, you have to learn to take care of small matters first! Learn to live off less Take time to commit to live off less than what you earn. No matter if you are earning $20,000
or $200,000, if you are not careful about your spending habits, then you may find yourself having more month than money. After creating and reviewing your budget, look for creative ways to live off less of your earned income. Consider your savings off limits From day to day, you will be faced with making decisions whether you should save or spend. Because of this, you have to really stay committed to your budget and more importantly consider your savings off limits. Of course, there may be times when you have to dip into your savings, but consider your savings off limits unless there is a dire need. Remember, you never know where this life may take you. Saving consistently will help you weather adverse financial events that may come your way. Remember: your choice your future!

The portion coming to Louisiana and the parish governments under these specific rules could reach more than $1 billion, depending on the final resolution of a court case to determine fines for the spill. Louisiana will receive additional money from other funds distributed under the Restore Act, and could eventually receive more than 20 percent of all the fine money. The rules published Wednesday govern a “bucket” containing 35 percent of the Restore Act money that will be divided equally among Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. More than twothirds of Louisiana’s share will go to state government, with the parishes receiving the rest. The money for the parishes will be divided under a complex formula based on the amount of oiled coastline, the area of the parish and its population in July 2012. The rules also govern a bucket containing 2.5 percent of the Restore Act money reserved for a “Centers of Excellence” research grant program, which also will be split equally between the states to establish science center. Under the new rules, the money given to states, counties and parishes can be used for both economic and environmental resto-

It didn’t take Alcorn President Alfred Rankins Jr. long to award Braves head football coach Jay Hopson for his exceptional leadership of the University’s football program. “We really appreciate what Coach Hopson has done in elevating our football program to the next level. It feels good to be recognized as one of the top teams in the SWAC,” said President Rankins. Hopson signed a three-year contract extension Thursday that will keep him in charge of leading the Braves to prominence for the next three seasons. Hopson is in his 3rd season as the Braves head football coach. Since his arrival at Alcorn, Hopson has led the Braves to a 13-10 record over a two-year span (11-7 in SWAC games), which included a 9-3 (first time winning nine games since 1974) record in 2013. He was nominated for the Eddie Robinson Award (best head coach in the FCS) and has coached more than 10 players who have earned All-SWAC honors (the most in school history). Hopson expressed his pleasure with the contract extension:
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. Nearly an intimate partner commits one third of female homicides. The cost of intimate partner violence exceeds 5.8 billion dollars a year. Domestic violence is a serious social issue with violence being communicated, learned, and spread from generation to generation. Boys who witness domestic violence are over twice as likely as those who do not to repeat this violence against their intimate partners. It is common for children to witness abuse since 30-60 percent of those who engage in violence against intimate partners also abuse children in the household. Violence against women is a learned phenomenon and just as boys can grow up learning to abuse women so can they also learn not to abuse. It is the responsibility of the community to band together to protect its women and daughters against the dangers of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse has been declining for the last two centuries; however, it remains prevalent, and if the issue is ignored, it maintains the momentum to once again become part of accepted popular culture. While laws can help to fight domestic violence by lowering the legal threshold of what is considered by the courts to be abuse, a far more important and effective course of action is public media broadcast aimed at changing the public’s sentiment towards the issue. The government and those with social influence must co-opt their power to send the message that domestic abuse has no place in modern society. Most Recently NFL Commissioner Goodell has come under media scrutiny for what many are calling a lax response and penalization towards Baltimore Raven’s running back Ray Rice. Rice was captured

on video dragging his unconscious wife, and then fiancée, following a physical domestic dispute out of an elevator in an Atlantic City Casino. Rice who pled not guilty to assault avoided a trial by agreeing to enter counseling. Late July the NFL handed down its sentence of half a million dollars and a two day suspension. This to many may seem like a large sum of money and therefore a reasonable punishment. However, when compared to other punishments the league has rendered in response too much lesser crimes, the punishment is considered by many to be nothing short of appalling. The response to the Rice incident is not ideal. It sends a message that has too often been modeled in the past—that domestic abuse is not an issue to be taken seriously. It sends the message to the public and especially their fan base, that it is permissible. Celebrity has afforded Rice many social benefits, but the ability to batter woman to the point of unconsciousness without reasonable legal and professional reprimand should not be one of them. Many, including Keith Olbermann, are calling for commissioner Goodell’s resignation. How the NFL responds will influence the future of its and the public’s reaction towards domestic abuse.
Money from page 5 tion Trust Fund.” Environmental groups lauded the release of the rules, and urged state and local officials to spend the money on a concerted plan to restore the ecosystem hurt by the spill. “The restoration projects that are ultimately chosen by decision-makers must build on each other and existing oil spill specific restoration efforts to ensure they equal more than the sum of their parts,” said Kara Lankford, interim director of the Ocean Conservancy’s Gulf Restoration Program. Guidance on how to apply for the money and applications will be available later this week, officials said. While the first pay-
ments could be distributed in 60 days, when the Treasury rules becomes final, it’s likely the selection process will require more time. The rules also provide for a 30-day public comment period. Louisiana already has identified a long list of projects it would like to fund with Restore Act money. It’s unclear whether the parishes have their proposals ready yet. The formula to distribute the money for the parishes is included in a separate Treasury rule that was proposed on July 31, and will not be final until Treasury considers public comments on them. Those rules would give the largest share among metro New Orleans parishes to Plaquemines Parish.
