What is your position and tenure at Bryan Ashley?

I am a Project Developer and have worked at Bryan Ashley for just over a year.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I enjoy learning new things from each of the projects and from the smart people I am surrounded by. We have an amazing team!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love to get outdoors and go to festivals or spend the day at a park by the water with friends and my dog.

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Lake Mirror in Lakeland, Florida, the grand Terrace Hotel made its debut in 1924 with a splendid and festive Gala. Throughout the years, it has stood as a venue for commemorating local business events, hosting joyful family wedding receptions, and welcoming travelers seeking a unique destination.

In a recent endeavor, Sims Patrick Studio collaborated with Bryan Ashley to undertake a comprehensive revitalization of the hotel, culminating in a state-of-the-art establishment. This transformation was skillfully executed while

honoring the property’s original architectural intricacies that grace its entirety.

Drawing inspiration from its exuberant art deco heritage from the 1920s, the graceful contours of the Lake Mirror swans, and the vibrant hues found in the nearby flourishing gardens and citrus groves, the hotel has undergone a complete rejuvenation. Fresh finishes, locally crafted artwork, and an eclectic array of furnishings seamlessly blend the allure of a bygone era with the refinement of contemporary luxury.

How do you find design inspiration?

Seeing the world through a creative lens, I am inspired everywhere I look. Travel is my number one source of design inspiration and a passion of mine. Experiencing different architecture, art and textile scenes has helped shape my design style, and I bring back inspiration from every trip I take. I also find design inspiration in my team members, whose talent and diversity represent cultures and backgrounds from around the world. Each team member brings a unique and distinct approach to design informed by their origins and cultures.

What do you feel are the most important questions for owners to ask before engaging in an interior design project?

How we work is a critical question. During the interview phase for any new project, we like to walk owners through our design process. We are highly collaborative in our approach and want to ensure that during the first 6-8 weeks of design concepts, we meet with clients weekly to review and engage in concepts together. When we start a project, we encourage clients to share any properties they like, but also the ones they don’t like, so that we can better understand their tastes and needs.

How has the industry changed since you started?

Technology has changed the industry, exponentially accelerating the rate of turnaround. When I first started in the industry, AutoCAD was still relatively new and had only been around for about four years. Most renderings were hand-sketched, and specs were in Word. Now, all programs provide 3D visuals within the same day, and specifications are customizable programs.

What advice would you offer to new designers in the hospitality industry?

Be prepared for constant changes and advancements in technology. The hospitality design industry is fast-paced. Schedules and timelines are quite compact, so new designers should expect to be flexible and ready to shift constantly between project deliverables and deadlines.

What was one of your favorite projects to work on?

One project I’d like to mention is the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya which is located a few miles north of Tulum, in a secluded bay surrounded by a tropical mangrove forest and the crystal blue Caribbean water. The 349-room resort is designed to give guests a deep personal connection with Tulum’s distinctive landscape. The nature-inspired theme continues throughout the hotel’s guest rooms and suites, incorporating locally inspired stones, woods and metals. With floor-to-ceiling glass and extensive panoramic ocean views, the guest rooms are designed with warm tones and custom furnishings each with their own private balcony and plunge pool.
