Welcome to the North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival, now in its 12th year This year’s festival has been a bit of a struggle to maintain. Funds are so tight for all of us and getting support for the festival was difficult this time. But I was determined to keep it going.

The festival is reduced in size, but not in quality.

To help me attract funds from towns that are covered by the festival, this year the festival is based around four of the larger towns in North Devon and Exmoor.

The festival starts in the area around Ilfracombe for two days, moving along the coast to Lynton and Lynmouth for the next three days. It then moves along the coast again to the area around Porlock for the next three days. Lastly it moves on to the area surrounding Dunster for the last two days.

Dunster is a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town and Lynton and Lynmouth are in the process of becoming a Walkers are Welcome twin town.

Ilfracombe is also now investigating becoming a Walkers are Welcome town.

To help keeps costs down for the festival many of the guides are offering their services for free or ‘in kind’. This has enabled us to keep the festival going and I am most grateful to those guides.

Walk Ticket Discounts

This year’s festival is based on the larger towns in North Devon and Exmoor. Starting on Friday 27th April with the Ilfracombe based walks, for two days. It then moves along to Lynton and Lynmouth for the next three days. The following three days are based around Porlock and the last two days are based around Dunster. This should make it easier for participants to choose their base and cause much less travelling to walks.

This year we are offering a discount on walk tickets that are purchased in multiples. If you book 5 walks or more in one transaction we will give you a 10% discount on the ticket price. If a group of 10 people wish to book on one walk in one transaction we will offer a 15% discount.

To help you choose your walks, please consider the following: 1, The walk number is the date and a reference.

2, Choose the area and time you want to come.

3, Choose your walks, noting the distance, the degree of difficulty and the pace at which the walk is likely to proceed. Please do not over-stretch yourself and consider your fellow walkers.

4, If you need accommodation, locate somewhere fairly central to your chosen walks.

You may need to change accommodation if you are following the festival across the area.

5, To find accommodation please support the adverts in this brochure or call the local tourist office. Without the support of our advertisers and sponsors, our walking festival could not take place.

Phone our Booking Line on 01271 863001, Ilfracombe Tourist Information Centre, between 10.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, 10.30am to 4.30pm Saturday and closed Sunday. They will be able to make the walk bookings for you online. Please have the walk number(s) ready to give the operator.

To get these discounts these bookings must be made through our telephone booking line 01271 863001. They cannot be made on the website.

Additional Walks Depending on demand we may find it necessary to put on extra walks. These will be put on to the festival website as necessary. Please keep an eye on the festival website should you find walks on certain days are becoming full.

Cancellation of Walks We reserve the right to cancel any walk that is undersubscribed or for reasons and circumstances beyond our control. This will normally happen between 10 to 7 days prior to the walk commencing. The few participants that are affected will be contacted and offered another walk or their money back for that walk.

Please give a contact telephone number when booking that we can contact you on in the 10 day run-up to the festival walks.

Data Protection Act 1998 Your details will be held on a database on making a booking. These will be used to contact you should there be a problem with the walk(s) you have chosen and to tell you about future North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festivals.

If you would like information on the festival by email at any time then please supply your email address when booking. This helps save paper and money.

Your information will not be passed on to any third party. You can opt-out of this database after the festival has taken place and unsubscribe from any email newsletters at any time.

If you have not been able to look at the website and check availability of the walk tickets, please be ready with an alternative.

The walks can book quickly. Once a walk is full, unless there is a cancellation, you will not be able to get on that walk. Confirmation of your booking will be provided from the website or posted to you if you phone your booking through.

Exmoor National Park Ranger walks

Please bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear. The guides, at their own discretion, have the right to refuse to take participants who are not suitably attired for the conditions.

National Trust walks

Some walks require packed lunches and others have food included during the walk. The cost of the food is not always included in the walk ticket price. The price indicates if it is included. If it is not included then please pay the provider before leaving. Please show courtesy and do not eat your own sandwiches at a food provider that is included as part of the walk.

Dunster Crown Estate walks

Dogs are welcome on walks which state this.

Because of the time of year, we request that dogs are kept under close control because of ground nesting birds and young stock in fields.

If a walk does not accept dogs it is because we know the walk passes through sensitive areas.

Moderate: Height gained and lost: 45m to 75m per mile. A walk with some notable ascents and descents. Suitable for the averagely fit walker.

Moderate to strenuous: Height gained and lost: 75m to 120m per mile. A walk taking in one or more steep, physically testing ascents and descents. Not recommended for inexperienced or unfit walkers.

You will hopefully see some unique and rare plants fresh from emerging in early Spring.

Directions to start: Go to Braunton on A361 and pass through the villlage to reach a roundabout. Turn right here to the next roundabout. Go straight across, to soon cross a hump-back bridge. A layby is soon on your left. Park here neatly.

Watermouth Cove and Castle

Directions to start: Go to Croyde. Turn left into Jones Hill. Pass the garage and take the next turn left.

Follow this road for nearly a mile to the far end and the NT car park comes up on the right.

Directions to start: From Ilfracombe go towards Combe Martin on A399. At the Sawmill Inn turn right to Berrynarbor. At the church follow the sign to the car park which is shortly on the right, with toilets.

Arlington Court was the home of Rosalie Chichester who left it to the National Trust in 1949.

Directions to start: From Ilfracombe take the A399 through Combe Martin. The other side of this village, after all the bends, turn right at Easter Close junction.

Arlington Court is signed with brown tourism signs.

Bear right on the A39 and follow to then turn left by a lovely thatched cottage to reach the car park of Arlington Court. Park in the first part or lower end of the car park.

The walk continues along an outstanding section of the South West Coast Path to Bull Point lighthouse along this rugged, beautiful and treacherous coastline, continuing around Rockham Bay and Morte Point.

Directions to start: Follow the A361 to the roundabout above Ilfracombe, called Mullacott Cross. Turn towards Woolacombe on the B3343 until reaching the turning to the right on a sweeping bend to Mortehoe. Follow this road to Mortehoe village and turn left into the car park.

By taking the South West Coast Path, Tarka Trail, public footpaths and part of the National Cycle Network, this walk explores some of the fine countryside, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coast.

Directions to start: Go to Ilfracombe sea front and park in the Landmark Theatre car park. The walk starts from the front of the theatre.

Follow this road for about 1.5 miles to cross a narrow bridge over the river. The car park is now on the left.

Start: Countisbury NT car park - donation box Description: This walk offers dramatic scenery, fast flowing rivers and ancient woodland. This area is home to a rich variety of wildlife from butterflies to red deer, as well as passing interesting history along the way. There will be a lunch stop at Watersmeet NT Lodge.

Directions to start: From Lynmouth go towards Porlock on the A39 up the long Countisbury Hill. Near the top turn left into the car park opposite the Blue Ball Inn.

Description: This walks shows you the River Barle valley and some of the relics of the mining in that valley, then crossing open moor to reach the start of the River Exe before dropping back to the start.

Directions to start: From Lynton follow the A39 to pass Watersmeet and then turn left on the B3223 to Simonsbath. Pass through the village and the car park is signed on the left.

Start: Woody Bay lower car park - donation box Description: Spectacular and unusual scenery is the hallmark of this walk. One gets glimpses of hidden bays before reaching the unusual Valley of Rocks. Then a climb up Southcliffe to get amazing views before going inland past an ancient farmstead.

Directions to start: From Lynton take the B3234 to Barbrook to turn right onto the A39. Follow this for about 2 miles and then turn right signed to Woody Bay and follow it for 1.6 miles to the coast and turn right. Follow this road down hill bearing left and then zigzagging back right to lay-by car park on the right.

Directions to start: From Lynton take the B3234 to Barbrook to turn right onto the A39. Follow this for about 2 miles towards Blackmore Gate and then turn right signed to Woody Bay and follow it for 1.6 miles to the coast and turn right. Follow this road down hill bearing left and then zigzagging back right to lay-by car park on the right.

Tramper to Heddon’s Mouth

10.30am, 3rd May, Free, Hunter’s Inn Book direct on: 01398 323335 Join a member of the Exmoor Society on this gentle stroll of 2 hours along the tranquil Heddon Valley to the sea at Heddons Mouth. Enjoy views of sea and beach before returning to Hunters Inn and Countryside Mobility.org an optional pub lunch.

A limited number of ‘Tramper’ all-terrain mobility scooters are available free of charge. Booking for scooters is essential on 01392 456522.

Description: This walk has immense variety, touching on the edge of open moorland with good all-round views as well as including the spectacular Cleaves footpath with wonderful views across the wooded East Lyn valley. This walk gives a good taste of Exmoor’s ever-changing scenery.

Directions to start: From Lynmouth follow the A39 up past Watersmeet and at the hairpin bend turn left, immediately right and immediately right again into Combe Park car park.

During the walk you will pass the ruins of a medieval village, close to the Badgeworthy Water, pass the waterslide on the Lankcombe brook, visit Cloud Farm for a cream tea and see Oare church where Carver shot Lorna on her wedding day.

Directions to start: From Lynmouth follow the A39 towards Porlock for 5.1 miles, turning right just after County Gate car park. Follow this road down and turn right in front of Oare church to reach Malmsmead.

Cross the ford and park the other side of the buildings.

Description: This walk gives good views over Doone Country. It then follows a path above the coast path, before dropping into the East Lyn’s wooded combe to return to Brendon for an award-winning cream tea.

Description: This walk starts shows you the beautiful Horner Woods and the delightful river. The walk passes to the other side of the valley circling around through Horner village for a tea stop (optional) before returning to the start.

Description: Climb to the highest point on Exmoor, on the way passing through beautiful scenery with wide views across the Vale of Porlock, to Wales and the rest of Exmoor. This walk also gives a good chance of seeing red deer, if not close, then through binoculars.

Directions to start: From Porlock take the A39 towards Minehead. Go round the sharp bend by the turning off to Allerford and shortly turn right by Piles Mill. Follow this small road for 1.5 miles to a small cross roads. Go straight over and up the steep hill until the road forks.

Take the right fork and then turn right into the large car park.

It offers wide open views over Porlock Vale and across Exmoor.

Directions to start: From Porlock take the A39 towards Minehead. Go round the sharp bend by the turning off to Allerford and shortly turn right by Piles Mill. Follow this small road for 1.5 miles to a small cross roads. Go straight over and up the steep hill until the road forks.

Take the left fork and follow this road up over the hill and down the other side to a small bridge. Park here.

Directions to start: From Porlock follow the A39 towards Minehead. Shortly after leaving the village the main road takes a sharp right bend. Continue ahead here towards Bossington. At the triangle green bear left to reach the car park.

3B Around Exmoor’s Highest Point 10.30am

Description: From Landacre Bridge the walk crosses Withypool Common and Withypool Hill to the picturesque village of Withypool with interesting church, pub and village shop. R.D. Blackmore stayed at the Royal Oak whilst writing Lorna Doone. The walk then returns along the Barle valley to Landacre. This walk has stunning scenery with great possibilities of seeing red deer, buzzards and ponies.

Directions to start: From Porlock take the A39 towards Lynmouth. At the top of Porlock Hill at Whitstone Post bear left to Exford. At Exford turn right and turn left immediately the other side of the river bridge. At the cross roads cross straight over. Follow this road for 2.4 miles to the bridge.

Directions to start: From Porlock take the A39 towards Lynmouth. At the top of Porlock Hill go into the rough car park opposite the turning to Exford at Whitstone Post.

Pace: Moderate Difficulty: Moderate to easy Route: Porlock - Porlock Marsh - Bossington - Porlock Start: Outside Porlock church, St Dubricius Description: This walk shows you the tidal salt marsh and shingle ridge before climbing to Hurlestone Point to look down on the bay. The walk returns through pretty Bossington.

Directions to start: Park in any of the car parks in Porlock and walk to the church in the centre of the village.

Directions to start: Follow the A396 or B3224 to Wheddon Cross. At Wheddon Cross follow the B3224 towards Raleghs Cross and Taunton. After 7.5 miles turn right on to B3190 for 1.2 miles. Just after radio masts turn right (Robbery Gate) and follow this road for 2.7 miles to Bessom Cross just by the lake. Cross the bridge over the lake and then take the next left.

Follow this small road and take the second left to the tea-rooms car park.

Description: This walk reveals much of this hymn which was written in Dunster in 1848 by Cecil F Alexander, possibly inspired by a verse in Coleridge’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. The walk passes the Castle and gains height to oversee Dunster village, the rolling hills of Exmoor and the sea across to Wales.

Description: This walk takes in the beautiful Avill valley, going along the Grabbist Hill ridge to Wootton Coutenay to cross the plain to Timberscombe to return along the other side through ancient woodland.

Directions to start: From Dunster take the A39 towards Williton. After 4 miles turn right signposted Withycombe and Rodhuish. Go through Withycombe, up the hill and follow the road round the bends. The farm is on left at bottom of the hill.
