The area supports a great diversity of wildlife, including wild red deer and Exmoor ponies, butterflies, bats and other species rare in southern Britain. Salmon still return from years at sea to travel up rivers to the spawning grounds they hatched from.

The heart of Exmoor National Park is a peaceful haven in which to simply relax and enjoy some ‘me’ time. But there’s plenty to do with wonderful watersports, horse riding, hiking and biking being among the many ways to enjoy and explore Exmoor’s unique environment.

Dulverton is home to the ancient Exmoor tradition of bolving. Every October red deer stags roar, or ‘bolve’, to entice hinds into their harems and scare off love rivals. Locals gather to imitate the stags, with a winner declared if a rival stag bellows back – truly a stag party with a difference!

The location for the film ‘The Land Girls’, this traditional town nestles between the Rivers Barle and Exe and hosts the National Park Heritage Centre. Dulverton has some excellent independent shops, art galleries and great places to eat, many of which specialise in local produce. Dunster is a magical medieval village. The National Trust’s romantic turreted Dunster Castle rises above the historic village, which boasts more than 200 listed buildings.

It has remained largely unchanged for centuries, and the 17th Century yarn market still dominates the High Street. The village has good facilities with plenty of shops, pubs and places to eat. There is plenty to see with the dolls museum, working water mill and ancient Gallox packhorse bridge. Don’t miss the magnificent rood screen that divides St George’s Church – it’s been in place since the monks and villagers fell out in 1499!

Around Dunster, there are thousands of acres of Crown Estate land to explore, including prehistoric settlements, Conygar Tower folly and the 16th Century Tithe Barn. Exford is famous for hunting, shooting, fishing and riding. Sitting on the banks of the River Exe, the village is surrounded by beautiful countryside that’s great for walking, biking or riding – and locals are happy to help you find lodgings for your horse!

Wheddon Cross dates back to the 1820s and has a garage, livestock market, an all weather sports court, a few shops and the Rest and Be Thankful Inn. As the highest village on Exmoor, it has a bird’s eye view of Dunkery Beacon. Simonsbath is in the heart of the Barle Valley, with beautiful walks to work up a thirst before visiting the pub or tea rooms. The tiny hamlet is also home to Simonsbath House, originally the only house in the Old Royal Forest of Exmoor. Walkers follow its 31-mile boundary every June in the ‘Exmoor Perambulation’, which dates back some 725 years.

where exmoor meets the sea Exmoor has some of the most dramatic coastline of any National Park. With Heritage Coast status and featuring Britain’s highest mainland coastal cliffs, it is renowned for its breathtaking views. Wooded valleys, known as combes, cut down to villages that have nestled on the shores for centuries. The coast is a firm favourite with families for its secret secluded coves, sandy stretches of beach and unspoilt villages. Combe Martin is a children’s paradise with its beach and intriguing rock pools.

This harbour village lies in a beautiful combe and the coastal approach road has some of Exmoor’s most spectacular coastal views. The two-mile long High Street is reputed to be the longest in the country! The Combe Martin Museum reveals the village’s rich past, while at the nearby Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, life-sized animated dinosaurs lurk in the woods!

Every spring bank holiday, village maidens, hobby horse, fool, band and soldiers ‘Hunt the Earl of Rone’. It takes days before they find him and march him the length of the High Street. He is regularly shot and revived by the hobby horse before being cast into the sea – a traditional spectacle not be missed! dramatically into enticing sheltered bays. The Victorians called the area the ‘Little Switzerland of England’ because of the stunning views. Both towns have good shopping and are linked by the funicular railway via a near-vertical cliff of about 500 feet. There are also enchanting walks beside the clear waters of the East Lyn to a beautiful waterfall at Watersmeet. About a mile from Lynton lies the unique Valley of Rocks where strangely-weathered formations bear names such as Ragged Jack and Devil’s Cheesewring. The valley is home to wild mountain goats - the only surviving group south of the Scottish Borders. Porlock lies in a lovely vale and is popular with walkers, cyclists and riders. This bustling village is rich in history but remains an unspoilt working village.

and the nearby Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre at Allerford is a great all-weather family attraction. The enchanting Horner Wood Nature Reserve has wonderful river walks. Heading west out of the village is the infamous Porlock Hill with its notorious 1:4 gradient. The fainthearted can take the scenic toll road towards Lorna Doone country, the setting for RD Blackmore’s classic novel. Porlock Weir is an unspoilt harbour two miles to the west of Porlock, which enjoys sweeping views over Bossington Bay to Hurlestone Point. The weir lies beneath ancient oakclad hills, has a generous expanse of pebble beach and children simply love to go crabbing from the harbour walls.

minehead and coast Minehead and villages along the West Somerset coast are ideally situated to explore the wonders of Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. There is plenty of culture and heritage along the coast as well as traditional seaside fun, which is why many visitors return year after year.

Home to the West Somerset Railway, you may see the huge steam locomotives turned by hand on the turntable for the journey back along the coast. The trains link the coastal villages to the east and give superb views of Exmoor, the coast and the Quantock Hills. Minehead is the Northern Gateway to Exmoor and the area’s largest town. It has many independent shops and a farmers’ market in The Parade every Friday. With a good choice of pubs, restaurants and places to stay, Minehead is a great base from which to explore the coast and countryside. The town offers traditional seaside fun along its promenade and sandy beach, while the picturesque harbour hosts summer pleasure boat cruises and anglers can book a trip to bag a catch at sea.

North Hill has fantastic views to Wales and across the Exmoor countryside. The far end of the hill looks across to Foreland Point which is famed for its stunning sunsets - take a picnic, relax and enjoy! Minehead is the start of the South West Coast Path, which follows the spectacular coastline for 630 miles all the way to Dorset. Following the railway along the coastal stretch, its first stop is Dunster Beach. It is a peaceful haven with beautiful views, a small shop and small pitch and putt. Heading inland, Dunster village is 15 minutes on foot. Blue Anchor Bay is the next stop on the railway. Children love its freedom while parents revel in the relaxed atmosphere. It is a perfect retreat for people seeking a quiet seaside escape.

The train heads slightly inland to the village of Washford, where the Cistercian Cleeve Abbey provides an interesting day out for families and budding historians alike. Owned by English Heritage, it gives a glimpse of monastic life 800 years ago and is said to have the finest cloister buildings in England. Henry VIII destroyed the abbey church in 1536, but the cloister buildings, gatehouse, 15th Century refectory with its glorious angel roof and 13th Century heraldic tiles have survived remarkably intact. Just along from the abbey is the delightful riverside White Horse Inn and the Torre Cider Farm. The popular all-weather children’s favourite, Tropiquaria Animal and Adventure Park, is only a few minutes’ drive away.

The historic port of Watchet has an active marina and a pleasant open esplanade. The bustling high street has a variety of shops and a choice of restaurants or pubs. There is a small town museum above the old jailhouse and a boat museum next to the beautifully-kept railway station. At one time Watchet had another railway, the Mineral Line, which has all but disappeared but the track has been resurfaced, making a great walk or cycle route to Washford. West Beach is small but unspoilt while nearby Doniford Bay is a great place to look for fossils. Before heading inland between the Quantock and Brendon Hills, the railway stops at Williton. Here you will find the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest Bakelite Museum, which displays artefacts over three floors of a Grade 2 listed 18th Century watermill. Williton is another good base for those wishing to explore the surrounding coast and countryside while enjoying the facilities of a large working village. 14

quantock hills area of outstanding natural beauty The Quantock Hills, the UK’s first ever Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest - nearly 10% of the world’s maritime heathland lies within its boundaries!

Pretty villages nestle in the foothills and, from the summits above, panoramic views take in the rocky Jurassic coastline, wooded combes and undulating farmland. It is renowned walking, mountain biking and riding country. The hills reach a height of 1261 feet (384m) at Will’s Neck, while evocative place names such as ‘Dead Woman’s Ditch’ hark back to a mysterious past…

Nether Stowey is a lovely historic village with good facilities. The great Romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, lived here while writing the ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. His friend, William Wordsworth, lived in the nearby hamlet of Holford. Together, they loved to walk the Quantock Hills so it’s no surprise that Nether Stowey is the start of the 36-mile Coleridge Way walk. Coleridge’s Cottage is open to the public for part of the year and new areas are now on show so that people can sample more of what life was like for the leading literary light. Kilve is a small delightful village with a general stores and post office, and a dog-friendly pub named the Hood Arms, which specialises in local

produce. It’s aptly named as the Kilve coast found fame as the location for Bryan Adams’ video, ‘Everything You Do’ - the soundtrack to Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves! The village is also the area’s Jurassic coast. The pebble beach and cliffs are famously rich in fossils and the views are beautiful. To the west of the hills, Bishops Lydeard has a good range of facilities and is home to the southern terminus of the West Somerset Railway and the Rural Life Museum. A short drive away are the beautiful Hestercombe Gardens - a unique collection of gardens that span three centuries of garden design and history.

Many of the small historic hamlets and villages that stud the western foothills have traditional pubs serving local ales, cider and food. There are many lovely walks from Crowcombe Gate and, as you descend the massive hill to the village of Crowcombe, you will find a warm welcome and great food at the Carew Arms.

exmoor Greater Exmoor takes in the area falling within a 10-mile radius of Exmoor National Park. It has beautiful countryside, stunning rivers, spectacular coastline and charming traditional towns and villages.

Ilfracombe is a bustling town with a regular farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; market and a good range of independent high street shops. The pubs, restaurants and shops surrounding the quay lend it a friendly Continental atmosphere, and there is nearly always something going on at the theatre.

The town is a mixture of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture, and there is a heritage trail for visitors interested in exploring its rich history. Those with a sweet tooth are in for a treat with a visit to the

honey farm or the chocolate factory, while the more adventurous can try the nearby indoor climbing wall. Bampton’s history dates from Saxon times when people settled on the River Batherm in this sheltered valley to the south of Exmoor. Once a quarrying town, a house in the central square stored the gelignite for blasting until the end of the 19th Century. In winter the gelignite was sometimes too cold to use, so the men put it round their stove to warm it - apparently they did this once too often!

“From bustling Ilfracombe, visit magical Lundy Island or enjoy a spot of sea fishing.” Held on the last Thursday in October, The Bampton Charter Fair is one of the oldest surviving Charter Fairs in the country. The village streets overflow with stalls full of local produce, crafts and entertainments. Wiveliscombe is a thriving historic market town known affectionately as Wivey. Renowned for brewing ales, the town now has three pubs but once boasted 28! However, it is still home to the famed Cotleigh Brewery and Exmoor Ales and its Brewery Plaque Trail marks some of the sites of its ancient inns.

A friendly town lying within easy distance of Exmoor and only 10 miles from the county town of Taunton, you are sure of a warm welcome at Wivey.

Farm Shops You will find a number of farm shops on your travels that specialise in using local produce – quite often it is their own or the shop is an outlet for nearby farmers and food and drink producers. Hindon Organic Farm near Minehead raises its own organic produce. It has a flock of hill sheep, an Aberdeen Angus beef herd and free range Gloucester Old Spot Pigs, which produce the tastiest home-made sausages, dry-cured bacon, Exmoor ham and gammon. In the footsteps,and hoof prints,of Literary Lights While the routes on foot and horseback may vary slightly, there is no better way of getting to know the landscapes that inspired some of the country’s best-loved stories. The Coleridge Way meanders through the stunning countryside known to great Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Starting on the Quantock Hills, where Coleridge lived, it winds through the Brendon Hills to the pretty Exmoor village of Porlock. It is said that a man from Porlock calling at Coleridge’s house disrupted his thoughts when writing Kubla Khan – and that’s why the famous poem was not finished as Coleridge intended! Lorna Doone country brings RD Blackmore’s famous novel to life. A mile along a riverside walk from Malmsmead is the tiny Oare church where Lorna Doone married, and where Blackmore’s grandfather was once the rector. At Badgworthy Water the scattered ruins of a longabandoned village is famed as the Doone’s home. However, nearby Lank Combe is said to more closely resemble Doone Valley. Footpaths and bridleways pass through beautiful countryside that is largely untouched by time.

The Tarka Trail is 180 miles long, with one stretch covering the Tarka Line Railway. It follows the route taken by Tarka the Otter in the book of that name, written by Henry Williamson. The Trail passes through numerous towns, including Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Lynmouth and Ilfracombe. A quiet section of the trail between Petrockstowe Station and Servis near Torrington is also open to horse riders.

Exmoor is famed for its trout and fine fly fishing can be enjoyed from banks or boats at Wimbleball and Clatworthy lakes, while Wistlandpound welcomes bank fishers.

Head to the coast to bag a catch at sea - boat trips yield bass, pouting, pollack and whiting to name a few and can be booked at Watchet, Minehead and Ilfracombe harbours.

You can also fish for trout from bank or boat at the Hawkridge reservoir in the Quantocks Hills.

Starry Skies Exmoor has been declared Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, and it’s a great place to gaze at the stars. Good spots are Holdstone Hill, County Gate, Brendon Two Gates, Webbers Post, Anstey Gate and Haddon Hill. Wild Pony Hunts Herds of Exmoor ponies roam the moors but they have their favourite haunts. More often than not you can spot them at Winsford Hill, Molland Moor, south of Simonsbath and Haddon Hill. If all else fails, you’re guaranteed to see them at the Exmoor Pony Centre near Dulverton! Semi-wild ponies also roam the Quantock Hills – try Staple Plain, Crowcombe Gate and Cothelstone Hill.
