VENTABREN VILLA Single-Family Residence | 2,600 SF | South of France Cost: â‚Ź 900K | Construction: 11 months | Firm: Henri Paret Architect

01

This three-bedroom house completed in 2015 was my first design project working under Henri Paret. The house is divided into two distinct and isolated zone by the entryway: with the living, media, kitchen and dining zone is on one side, and bedrooms are on the other. Where the living area is light and bright with walls of glass, the sleeping area is more enclosed, and its floor hugs the slope of the site, stepping up slightly. An overhang on the south facade serves a dual-purpose, unifying the two separated spaces when viewed from the garden, and minimizing heat-gain by protecting the glass walls from the hot sun. The house’s overall transparency is facilitated by its central corridor, through which one can see from one end of the house to the other. For this project, I was responsible for the initial schematic design of the home according to the program, in order to respond to request for proposal put out by the client. Once the project was chosen, I was responsible for all construction drawing sets, working closely with consultants and responding to requests for clarifications from our building team.

PALETTE MIXED-USE Mixed-Use Project | 13,000 SF | South of France Cost: â‚Ź 3M | Expected: Sept 2017 | Firm: Henri Paret Architect

This 13,000 SF condominium and office space was originally meant to be housed in an 18th-century wine cellar, on a large garden site with hundred-year old trees situated in the center of a small town. The project consists of 8 duplex or triplex townhomes, each with its own garden. The developers had us on a very tight schedule, and asked us to begin schematic design and design development in parallel with the seismic and structural evaluation of the existing building. It became clear that the ancient stone building (built without foundations) would not be able to withstand the structural manipulation necessary to conform to modern seismic safety standards. Therefore, the difficult decision was made to build new, and we had to modify the drawings to reflect these changes. For this project, I was responsible for the initial schematic design, permitting, and all working drawings and construction drawing sets.

MUSIC REHEARSAL HALL New Rehearsal Hall | 3,500 SF | South of France Cost: â‚Ź 2.5M | Construction: 12 months | Firm: Henri Paret Architect

11

This artists house and rehearsal space, built for a wealthy Swiss philanthropist who wished to house classical orchestral musicians. Set on two floors, the house has three bedrooms on the first floor with a common area. The second floor is the rehearsal space, complete with acoustic treatments on all surfaces. More than a simple rehearsal hall, it had to be able to transform into a reception hall. The project needed to both cater to the acoustical needs of the musicians, while also allowing the possibility to take in the 180-degree views of the magnificent Provencal countryside. We found a solution in custom sliding wooden panels, that allow light in while maintaining an acoustic quality, and the versatility of movement to expose the glass walls and the sweeping views below. Thus, I worked directly with our hardware consultant and woodworker to integrate the wooden panels into the mounted hardware, defining the technical specifications for each and coordinating between the two. For this project, I was responsible for the initial schematic design, permitting, all construction drawing sets and consultant coordination.

TAN VILLA Single-Family Residence 3,400 SF | South of France | Cost: â‚Ź 1.2 M Construction: 10 months | Position: Associate, Henri Paret Architecte

15

This home in the Provence region of France is situated on a tight, sloped site. The topography reduces the buildable area to a thin, rectangular area, overlooking a valley. The home is structured in a series of ambiances: a calm, covered entryway that guides people into the home, with a pool on one side, and a water basin and fountain on the right. In order to reduce heat gain, the south-facing facade windows are protected by an overhang and a patterned sunshade, while the north facades patios bring natural light deep into the home. Due to budget restrictions, the house was redrawn from the initail 5,000 SF area and reduced to its current size. I was responsible for redrawing the existing design to make it 30% smaller, making the space and circulation more efficient while keeping the same programmatic elements. I also handled all building permits and construction documents for our consulting firms.

VSA HOTEL Luxury Hotel 29,000 SF | South of France Cost: â‚Ź 9M | Under Construction | Firm: Henri Paret Architecte

19

This hotel, under construction, is situated steps from the center of Aix-en-Provence on a plot of land with existing 19th-century buildings. The client wished to convert, connect and expand the existing buildings, maintaining a Provencal style, to create a luxury 5-star hotel. With this project, the goal was to maintain the quality and ambiance of the site’s lush, oasis-in-the-city feel, and maximize the number of hotel rooms without making it feel overwhelming. The property and buildings were protected heritage sites, and we worked closely with city architects and archaeologists during design development and construction. I was responsible for feasibility studies, schematic design, permitting, construction drawings, modeling and rendering. I also coordinated with our interior designer, engineers for fire safety, accessibility and structure, and other consultants as-needed.

CASSIS VILLA Luxury Vacation Home 50,000 SF | South of France Study - Unbuilt | Position: Associate, Henri Paret Architecte

23

This study was completed for a client from Miami, who was contemplating purchasing a plot of land overlooking the Mediteranean Sea in Provence. He asked our office to do a study for a luxurious vacation home. The home includes all the trappings of modern luxury: 8 bedrooms, fitness center and sauna, swimming pools, and more on an exemplary site. This concept was designed to emphasize the natural beauty of the surroundings, drawing guests’ eyes towards the sea, towards the horizon. The house’s linear form runs parallel to the sea, and the horizon is framed between the infinity pool and the overhang. With its rooftop gardens blending into the grass below, the pool’s sharp blue mirroring the vibrance of the color of the sea, the home becomes one with the site, espousing it, holding it. I was responsible for the initial concept and subsequent studies, as well as creating the 3D renderings seen here.

INRA - RESEARCH CENTER 43,000 SF Menton Research Center and Garden Study South of France | Class: MArch Candidate - Project Studio

27

As an MArch candidate, our class was asked to explore the FrancoItalian border, nestled between the mountains and the sea, to find a site and develop a project. I proposed an agricultural research center and garden, which would capitalize on the town’s exceptional microclimate. The steep topography was the primary challenge on the chosen site. The proposed building uses the largest of the many retaining walls that structure the mountain as its base. The wall is ‘widened,’ taking in the building, encompassing the walkways, exhibit space and workspaces. Its overhang deliniates true entryways where visitors are drawn up into the open-air walkways, which filter light and protect visitors from the punishing Mediterranean sun. Researchers use three ‘quick-access’ staircases to attain their various subjects of study, while visitors are guided up the steep slopes through meandering walkways that follow the existing retaining walls, finishing at a dramatic viewpoint at the top of the mountain, overlooking the rooftops of the town below and the vibrant blue of the Mediterranean Sea.

CIREEX - FIRESTATION 56,000 SF Industrial Firestation and Training Complex Study South of France | Class: BArch Candidate - Project Studio

33

As a BArch candidate, our class was asked to submit proposals for an industrial firestation and training center, located on a crude oil treatment site with extreme risk for explosions and chemical fires. Due to the site’s magnitude (its pipelines feed all of Europe), it also draws a significant amount of industrial tourism. The preliminary program included standard firestation elements such as sleeping areas and a fully equipped gym, in addition to the classrooms and safe, outdoor test areas for simulated crisis situations. The proposed design maximized the use of the site, which is contained on all sides by a highway, a railroad and a canal. A long ‘folded’ wall runs around the site, creating a threshold and indicating an entryway to any visitors. The building is ‘held’ by the wall on one side, its height defined by the the difference between the level of the railroad tracks and the canal. With its roof garden, the building seems to blend into the countryside, maintaining sweeping views across the entire site. Our studies were collected and presented to the city’s BOE, and used as a basis for a subsequent RFP put out to architecture firms nationwide.

PUBLIC SPACE Exploring urbanism and public space in the city of Martigues South of France | Class: MArch Candidate - Project Studio

37

This project was centered around the study of public space and urbanism in the city of Martigues, specifically a small island and quayside that was primarily a dead-end parking space. Our assignment was to explore what makes public spaces of quality, and apply the theory to this particular town. We were asked to find a solution to redensify, dynamise and open up the center of town, and our project transformed the space into a pedestrian-friendly public promenade. The solution was to centralize the parking lots into one subterranean building, and reserve the island for pedestrian use. The ground floor was planned for retail space, and the higher floors for housing and office spaces. An existing building was ‘pierced’ to allow foot traffic through and a mirror building was proposed across the way, with similar permeability, creating a de facto public square between the two structures.

MARSEILLE - HOUSING Exploring housing and urban density in the city of Marseille South of France | Class: BArch Candidate - Project Studio

As a BArch candidate, our studio was asked to reflect on housing and urban density in the city of Marseille, one of the most densely populated cities in France and the country’s second largest city.

41

Each working group of two to three students were given a differnt parcel of land. We were asked to take into account the different access points that the surroundings and topography might generate, and generate a plan to urbanize and densify our site to a certain level, including collective housing (apartment buildings), intermediary housing (stacked townhomes), and individual housing (single-family residences with a private exterior and individual parking). Our site was situated between a park, a sports arena, and a canal. The following pages show each part of the site: collective, intermediary and individual.
