SUPREME COURT REJECTS STATES’ CHALLENGE TO COLORADO CANNABIS LAW In a major victory for cannabis supporters, the U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an effort by Nebraska and Oklahoma to have Colorado’s recreational adult-use cannabis legalization declared unconstitutional. Nebraska and Oklahoma said Colorado’s decriminalization has “increased the flow of marijuana over their borders,” forcing them to expend greater “law enforcement, judicial system, and penal system resources,” thereby harming the welfare of their residents. They claimed to suffer “a direct and significant detrimental impact — namely the diversion of limited manpower and resources to arrest and process suspected and convicted felons involved in the increased illegal marijuana trafficking or transportation.” Colorado’s approach, they argued, is in direct conflict with federal law, which makes it illegal to possess even small amounts of marijuana. The court turned the case away in an unsigned opinion. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. Writing for them both, Thomas said the court should have taken the case because “the plaintiff states have made a reasonable case.” There were no lower court decisions, because disputes between the states go directly to the Supreme Court. Nebraska and Oklahoma did not challenge Colorado’s legalization itself. Instead, they argued the way that Colorado regulates the manufacture, possession, and distribution of marijuana was causing them harm.

Colorado argued its neighboring states’ real battle is with the federal government’s policy of declining to prosecute cases of simple possession in states where marijuana use has been legalized. Those states should sue the federal government, not Colorado, it said. “A state does not violate the sovereign rights of another state, by making a policy decision that parts ways with its neighbors,” Colorado said. The Obama administration had sided with Colorado, despite the administration’s opposition to making marijuana use legal. “Entertaining the type of dispute at issue here — essentially that one state’s laws make it more likely that third parties will violate federal and state law in another state — would represent a substantial and unwarranted expansion of the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.”

LEGAL MARIJUANA SALES FORECAST TO HIT $23 BILLION IN 4 YEARS Marijuana is becoming a major industry across the United States, with $5.7 billion in sales in 2015 and tens of thousands of people working and paying taxes as they cultivate, package and sell cannabis. By 2020, adult use and medical marijuana sales are expected to reach nearly $23 billion, according to the recently released 4th Edition State of Legal Marijuana Markets Report from ArcView Market Research and New Frontier, a cannabis-focused data-analysis firm. Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, Washington state and Washington, D.C. have all legalized adult recreational use, and 23 states and the District of Columbia permit some form of medical use. That’s despite the fact that marijuana remains an illegal drug and Schedule 1 controlled substance at the federal level. Across the country, thousands of people are rushing into the industry, struggling to work within a conflicting patchwork of state laws and

local regulations, all while operating largely without banks accounts at traditional financial institutions, which are fearful of running afoul of federal drug-trafficking laws. The industry is expected to grow in 2016, with much of the increase attributed to adult use market sales that hit $1.3 billion in 2015.

Baked Bros Is Back at TruMed Dispensary Baked Bros founders Nadeem Al-Hasan and Thomas Rimbach announced that the edibles company is back in business, returning with a new look, more flavors and a new dispensary partner, TruMed Dispensary. Baked Bros popular Pourable THC Syrup, formerly known as Dank Drank, is available again for Arizona patients, along with the rest of Bake Bros’ award-winning medical marijuana product line. TruMed’s number one ranking with Leafly, combined with their reputation for customer service quality, was a major factor in Baked Bros’ decision. “Since edibles have to be hand-infused at the dispensary, the dispensary’s capacity as well as consistency and reputation are essential to a long and mutually successful partnership,” AlHasan said. TruMed is known throughout the Southwest as a first-class dispensary. Its concentrates bar has been recognized in Forbes Magazine for its innovative concept and customer-convenient design. “We welcome the opportunity to team with Baked Bros,” said TruMed president Mike Anton.

“Their products are renowned. The high-demand, award-winning product line fits beautifully with our dispensary’s long-term goals.” The 2015 CannAwards named Baked Bros Pourable THC Syrup a winner in two categories: “Best New Infused Product” and “Most Popular Infused Product” for the Southwest Region. High Times called the syrup “an excellent product that’s easy to dose.” The Syrup is available in grape, mango, cherry, strawberry-kiwi and watermelon flavors in 600 mg and 300 mg sizes, with a 150 mg size coming soon. Other popular Baked Bros products that will be stocked at TruMed Dispensary include Sour Kush Kids, Gummy Bears, Sour Gummy Worms, Rainbow Belts, Peach Rings and Watermelon Slices. Baked Bros’ entire family of Pourable THC Syrups and gummies will also be available at a number of other dispensaries throughout the state. TruMed Dispensary is located at 1613 N. 40th Street and McDowell in Phoenix. For information, call 602-275-1279 or visit online at www.trumedaz. com. MEDICAL MARIJUANA IS TAKING A BITE OUT OF CRIME Policy, told a Senate committee last year that “given the increase in marijuana use among the American population, this suggests that people using marijuana in the United States may be increasingly obtaining marijuana from domestic sources.” With legalized marijuana demonstrating benefits on so many fronts, you wonder why Americans waited so long to wise up.

Marijuana legalized by states may be doing at least one thing that a decades-long drug war couldn’t: taking a bite out of Mexican drug cartels’ profits. The latest data from the U.S. Border Patrol shows that in 2015, marijuana seizures along the Southwest border dropped to their lowest level in more than a decade. Agents captured roughly 1.5 million pounds of marijuana at the border, down from a peak of nearly 4 million pounds in 2009. As domestic marijuana production has ramped up in places such as California, Colorado and Washington, marijuana prices have fallen for drug traffickers, especially at the bulk level. According to sources, a kilogram [2.2 pounds] of marijuana was worth $60 to $90 in 2014. But now, street marijuana is selling for roughly $30 to $40 a kilo. It’s a big difference that many experts attribute to legalized pot in the states. And it’s not only price. Experts report that Mexican growers are facing pressure on quality as well. “The quality of marijuana produced in Mexico and the Caribbean is thought to be inferior to the marijuana produced domestically in the United States or in Canada,” the DEA wrote last year in its 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment. “Law enforcement reporting indicates that Mexican cartels are attempting to produce higherquality marijuana to keep up with U.S. demand.” If the decline in border seizures is any indication, however, it appears that Mexican growers are having difficulty competing with domestic production. Some federal authorities are beginning to believe this is the case. Noting the decline in border seizures, Michael Botticelli, director of the Office of National Drug Control

A look into the origins of everyone’s favorite cannabis code By Anthony Franciosi

26

BLAZED420

APRIL / MAY 2016

420 is perhaps the most used smoker’s slang in the modern cannabis community. But where did this code come from? Several have claimed credit, but few know the true origin of the cryptograph.

A

clique of friends known as the Waldos at San Rafael High School in Marin County, Calif., claim that 4:20 pm was the time that they would meet up to smoke and go on unusual adventures. 420 quickly became their code for talking about marijuana in front of hostile peers, parents, teachers and other authorities. The phrase caught on with more students at San Rafael High, who continued the tradition of celebrating cannabis on April 20th. The Waldos also claim that the Grateful Dead picked up 420 from them. Steve Bloom, a highly influential ganja journalist, discovered a flyer for an April 20th smoke out at a Grateful Dead show and showed it to Steve Hagar from High Times, who made 4:20 pm a sacred time for stoners at the High Times office and the Cannabis Cup he founded. However, another clique of San Rafael High School stoners known as the Bebes claimed that the Waldos came up with 420 first and that the Bebes were and still are even bigger stoners than the Waldos. We contacted and interviewed a key witness from Steve “Celeb Stoner” Bloom and High Times to unravel the grassroots ganja history of how 420 became every bit as synonymous with cannabis culture as pot leaves themselves. While most of the historical facts about 420 have gone up in smoke, at least we can enjoy the highly entertaining yet incredibly dubious testimonies from the Waldos and the Bebes. Here we present you with the stories of the alleged founding fathers of 420 to help you form your own conclusion, or perhaps even your own story to take credit for creating an ingenious code word and a global holiday for cannabis.

What Is 420? Every seasoned stoner intuitively, subconsciously, and even telepathically knows that the numbers four, two and zero, spoken together as “four twenty” symbolize getting high with your friends and having a good time. 420 is not, contrary to a once popular myth, a police code for illegal marijuana smoking in progress. No one knows for certain how 420 became a grassroots citizen’s code that symbolizes trust, friendship, community and safety for the millions of marijuana users who continue to endure persecution, violence, incarceration and social marginalization year after year in this country. However, 420 at its roots represents the thrill of hanging out with friends, getting high in public, having a great time, and not getting into trouble. Steve Bloom pointed out that recreational cannabis users still have to hide around building corners, in backyards, basements, and in cars and that 420 refers to the fun and the freedom that we find for ourselves while we hide. 420 is perhaps the most widely understood expression for the joys of recreational cannabis.

Waldos on the wall, 1971. Statue of Louis Pasteur, at San Rafael High School

The Waldo’s story of how they coined 420 is such a quintessentially sweet 1970’s story of 420 friendship and adventure is hardly surprising to have received scrutiny from another circle of San Rafael High School stoners.

Meet the Waldos The world of the Waldos revolved around a wall in the courtyard of San Rafael High (hence why they chose to call themselves the Waldos). The Waldos were a well-liked clique of smart, athletic and creative young men with long hair, Afros, vests adorned with patches, bellbottoms and bandannas — the typical hippie garb. They would meet at the wall before classes and during lunch breaks to do impersonations, tell funny stories and crack jokes about anyone and everyone they knew, including each other. They would also dream up ideas for wacky, weekly adventures they called Waldo Safaris.

The First 420 Field Trip A generous Coast Guard who also grew some ganja was worried about getting kicked out of the U.S. Coast Guard, so he drew a map to his patch of pot plants in Pt. Reyes, Calif. and gave it to his brother, who then gave it to his friend “Waldo Steve.” The Waldos agreed to meet at a school statue of the chemist Louis Pasteur at 4:20 pm to begin their stoned search for the secret patch of pot. The Waldos were so excited to begin their safari that they couldn’t resist smiling and saying “420 Louie” to each other in the hallways in between classes. They met at the statue, got high, climbed into Steve’s ‘66 Chevy Impala, cranked classic rock bands over the 8-track stereo system. They continued to smoked more weed on their way to Pt. Reyes in search of the field, which they never managed to find. However, the act of getting together and smoking throughout their journeys became Waldo tradition itself, and they still had a blast looking for the weed week after week to no avail. They dropped the “Louie” part and began joyfully saluting each other with “420” to get stoked for the weekly search and for other subsequent safaris. The Waldos kept saying 420 because of how useful the phrase was. Waldo Steve described how he and his friends could telepathically ask each other “Hey do you wanna go smoke some?”, “Do you have any weed?” or “Are you stoned right now?” in front of completely clueless teachers, coaches, and parents just by saying “420” to one another. However, while they continued to elude the square authority figures, plenty of San Rafael students caught onto the new pot reference. Steve Hagar says that the Waldos began hosting a big pot party every April 20th for a ceremonial toke of weed, naturally at 4:20 pm. Younger students at San Rafael High began using the code to safely get high and to continue organizing gatherings at 4:20 pm every year on April 20, which grew in popularity at a new locale, Mount Tamalpais, with a sunset view of

the Pacific ocean. According to Steve Hagar, many of the people who were new to the 420 festivities assumed it had been created by police as opposed to the Waldos, an assumption that gained notoriety.

The Grateful Dead and the Waldos The Waldos claim that the Grateful Dead picked up 420 from them and not the other way around. This is certainly plausible, as the Waldos had plenty of opportunities to get high and share the phrase with the legendary band at rehearsals and backstage events. Waldo group member Dave had an older brother who was a close friend and manager of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, who said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the Waldos had truly coined 420. Another Waldo member named Mark was son of a real estate broker who found homes for Grateful Dead members throughout Marin County. The Waldos claim that they would take care of the homes and pets of the Grateful Dead while they were on tour.

High Times for 420 Former Freedom Leaf editor Steve “Celeb Stoner” Bloom certainly didn’t create 420, however he is credited with discovering it from the depths of DeadHead stoner obscurity and passing it to High Times while he was working for the magazine. Bloom was handed a 420 flyer at a 1990 New Year’s Grateful Dead show at the Oakland Coliseum, where he also heard the myth of 420 as a police code. Steve printed the flyer in the May 1991 issue of High Times and started seeing 420 appear on shirts and other stoner apparel, and hearing 420 references from High Times readers. The Waldos, however didn’t reach out to the publication to set the record straight until 1997. Bloom told Honest Marijuana that he wished he had checked the Marin County Police codes before publishing the flyer. Even though he doesn’t entirely believe the Waldo story about creating 420, he does credit them with debunking the police code myth.

Steven Hagar, founder of the High Times Cannabis Cup, wrote that he had been reading the Hindu Rigveda searching for a ceremonial framework for his events and felt the call to smoke weed at 4:20 pm on April 20 assumed biblical proportions in his mind. Hagar said that he started incorporating 420 into everything he was doing at the High Times and with the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, thereby making 420 an international phenomenon. Bloom told us how Hagar always looked forward to getting high and brainstorming new “highdeas” for the magazine with his co-workers everyday at 4:20 pm. Hagar met with the Waldos after they reached out to High Times in 1997 to investigate their claims and accepted their story as true based on postmarked letters that the Waldos showed Hagar, the earliest known evidence of 420 in stoner context.

The Bebes claim that 420 was created at exactly 4:20 pm on a big Saturday afternoon bong session sometime in October 1970, when Benn randomly blurted out “It’s 4:20, time for bong loads!” The leader of the Bebes then started recording a voice impression of Abraham Lincoln and said “four score and twenty years ago” while everyone was high and 420 became their new code for getting high. Bone Boy asserts that 420 is an accidental anomaly with no deeper meaning, in spite of how pervasive the term has become in the global cannabis community. However, none of the Bebes saved their audio recordings of the birth of 420. Despite the two groups’ claims of true 420 ownership, the Bebes and Waldos are still good friends to this day. The Bebes

Meet the Bebes On October 15, 2012, then Editor-in-Chief of 420 Magazine Rob Griffin published his doubts about the Waldos claims. “Some of the Waldos had sports after class,” Griffin points out. “Why would they choose 4:20 pm to meet after school specifically?” Griffin also published a letter from another San Rafael High alumn named Bone Boy, who claimed that Brad Benn, aka leader of The Bebe clique, another circle of athletestoners, ordained Waldo Steve as the first Waldo because he was goofy, not because he hung out on a wall, and the name stuck with his circle of friends.

BEST PLACES

The Best Cities to Smoke Toke-up destinations for our favorite holiday What allegedly began as the meeting time for a group of California stoner friends in their search for a secret pot-laden treasure in 1971, 420 has blossomed into a counterculture movement and officialunofficial holiday for tokers around the world. So, which hot spots partake in the hotbox? Check out our list of the best bud-friendly cities to celebrate come April 20.

420 can be summarized as “anything you want it to be.”

Every April 20, smokers gather at Porter College meadow at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Being a well-known event comes at a cost, though, and the toke-outs are often crashed by anti-drug activists and religious extremists. But then again, what’s a college campus without a few protestors? For the most part, the negativity is largely ignored and everyone chills.

Today, three of the Waldos still occasionally toke. However Waldos Steve and Dave now own and work for a specialty lending service that lost lots of money in the Bernie Madoff scandal and say they rarely get high. “I’ve got to run a business. I’ve got to stay sharp,” Waldo Steve once said. “Seems like everybody I know who smokes daily, or many times in a week, it seems like there’s always something going wrong with their life, professionally, or in their relationships, or financially or something.” Zamneisia Magazine pointed out, however, that all of the Bebes, now in their mid-to-late 50s are still living and smoking regularly together in San Rafael.

San Francisco, California

How to Explain 420

Santa Cruz, California

Thousands of people flock from all over California to San Francisco’s Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park, near the Haight-Ashbury district, historically known for being the hub of the 1960s hippie movement. That’s right, this is where the OG of the OG Kush hail, the founding fathers of far out, blue bloods of the bud. Consider this trip a high history lesson.

Tallahassee, Florida Named the number two pot smoking-est city in the United States by High Times, thousands observe 4/20 in Tallahassee. Some of the most popular spots include Florida State University and Florida A&M campuses. We can only imagine the money pizza delivery guys make that day.

Boulder, Colorado No surprise here! One of the largest, if not THE largest, 420 celebration is gathering at The University of Colorado Boulder, with attendance typically reaching more than 11,000. The Mile High State didn’t just earn its name from Denver’s altitude, ya’ know.

Ottawa, Canada Thousands of activists gather on either Parliament Hill or in Major’s Hill Park, which sit just to the South and North of Ottawa’s famous Peace Tower, respectively. Together, participants look toward the Peace Tower as they join each other in smoking marijuana, especially when the tower’s clock strikes – you guessed it – 4:20 pm.

Rob Griffin said that he has tried to explain the meaning of 420 no less than 420 million times. He now summarizes it as “anything you want it to be.” Steve Bloom told us that explaining the myth of 420 as a police code is typically how most seasoned stoners attempt to explain 420 to those green to pot. Consider yourself a full-fledged member of the global 420 family if you can tell your friends stories about San Rafael High School, the Waldos and the Bebes, The Grateful Dead, Steve Bloom and Steve Hagar the next time you get high with them at 4:20 pm on April 20th. ARIANNA ONE FAMILY MAN’S JOURNEY HAS LED TO AN AMAZING CBD SUCCESS STORY

Blazed 420 Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with Jacob C, the grower of the 2016 Errl Cup winning CBD strain to learn a little on the history of his winning strain, Arianna. What he shared was an emotional rollercoaster ride into the world of a single father and grower on the rise.

W

ith nearly 10 years of growing experience, Jacob C. now manages a grow room in Phoenix and works closely with master grower Adam the Bear. Since stepping into the position, Jacob has become fully immersed in his work, receiving a host of accolades and fully supporting his family of three. As a single father, Jacob divides his time between his two priorities: work and family. But, in the last three years, the two have interwoven into a tapestry of hope and possibility that can only be described as truly touching and heartfelt. Although Arianna is not his only child, she has become the driving force in Jacob’s daily efforts to bring balance to the world, one patient at a time. Now six years old, Arianna was, at the age of three, the youngest patient in Arizona to hold a Medical Marijuana Card. But, the journey to find the appropriate course of action was no easy one. Jacob didn’t realize his daughter had any issues until after the taking of a family photo — when Arianna was just one and half years old. A short time later, she was rushed to the hospital after enduring her first full body seizure, where it was revealed to Jacob that his daughter suffered from Tuberous Sclerosis, a genetic disorder that causes non-malignant tumors to grow on the organs, seizures and even autism. The next year and half of Jacob’s life was spent at his daughter’s crib side, in waiting rooms, doctors’ offices and by scraping together enough money to purchase the heaps of prescription medications his daughter was now taking. In this time, he saw his daughter’s development completely halt and in certain instances, regress. Every waking moment was spent worrying about her well being and what the family might wake up to next. Nearly at his wits end, The Universe seemed to step in and lend a helping hand. Upon watching a television program that focuses on the science, growth and cultivation of cannabis, Jacob caught a special on CBD strains which highlighted the direct health benefits for many, if not all, of the effects his daughter was experiencing as a result of her disease. Jacob immediately contacted the growers and told them his story. After a few conversations and further education, Jacob

By Jesse Perry obtained a CBD tincture that he administered to his daughter by diluting in her juice. Jacob noticed a subtle change in his daughter’s coherency that same day, which only continued to build as he administered the tincture. Jacob was completely blown away by the results after just a few months and stated, “I finally started to learn who my daughter was.” Jacob let out pent-up emotion after years of fear, anger, frustration, confusion and finally hope for his daughter. It was this passion and love, combined with their progress, that inspired him to begin experimenting with CBD strains, which he tenderly cared for in the soils of his grow. A few months later and after a lot of attention to detail, Jacob revealed the first of what he called the, “Arianna Strain.” A CBDrich strain that contains THC and specifically assists with chronic pain management, anxiety, inflammation, seizure relief and much more, without the effects of heavier, THC-rich strains. Although the Arianna Strain has never been administered to Arianna herself, it stands as a monument of the dedication of a father to his children, as well as his commitment to doing his part for the cannabis community. Over the next few years, Jacob continued to develop his Arianna Strain, as well as give his daughter a dosage of pure CBD tincture, diluted in her juice, administered in the morning and at night. When asked where he obtained his tincture, Jacob revealed that he had used a number of sources during the discovery process until he found what worked. “The dosage process is a learning process,” said Jacob, as he had had some difficulty in the beginning with certain products not having accurate testing or simply lacking in consistency. Now, three years later, he has discovered consistency in dosing for his daughter, which has left her seizure-free for one year, as of April 28. This experimentation led to the development of his Arianna Strain, which would become an Errl Cup winner. “What are you putting in the water?” asked one of Arianna’s teacher aids at the special school she attends during a recent parent/ teacher conference. They had all noticed a significant turnaround in Arianna’s behavior, abilities and cognizance over the last period and wanted to share their hopes with Jacob APRIL / MAY 2016

I FINALLY STARTED TO LEARN

WHO MY DAUGHTER WAS.

for Arianna down the line. You couldn’t help but see the glint of optimism in his eyes as he came to terms with the fact that he had paved a path for his daughter’s future. Although she will suffer from Tuberous Sclerosis all of her life, Arianna’s quality of life has improved dramatically and is continuing to do so each and every day. Not only that, her family’s quality of life had improved as well. By no longer having to worry constantly about Arianna’s well being, Jacob and his family have had the chance to relax and come together as a functioning household that spends its time going to the park, watching movies, cooking dinner, playing sports and enjoying life the way it was intended to be. Jacob knows that none of it would possible without CBD and the people who are putting in the time and money to discover more about possibilities and opportunities that cannabis has to offer. What it came down to in the end is that marijuana is a way of life, it is a way of supporting life, of giving live and improving life. Jacob would like to thank his family, Bryan, Damon, Dana, Abra, Brad, Dustin, Ria, D, Marci, Juvy, Angel, Liz, Linzy, Ange, Fred, Alex, Lee, Tucker, his grow team, his supporters and Adam the Bear. “Without you, none of this would be possible.”

Executive chef & cannabis connoisseur

PAYTON CURRY

cooks up new ways to eat your greens! BY JESSE PERRY Father, entrepreneur, philanthropist and executive chef Payton Curry opens up his private pantry to share a few of the things that spice up his life, as well as a few recipes to help spice up yours! Recently featured in publications such as High Times, Newsweek and Culture Magazine, as well as appearances on TEDx Talks, Phoenix Magazine and AZ Central, Payton Curry has become synonymous with the cannabis cooking industry, in addition to his already notable reputation of being a sustainable, farm-to-table chef. Utilizing his professionally trained technique and his own brilliant perspective, Curry is teaching us why cannabis is not a weed at all, but more like an essential and beneficial vegetable. Plus, Curry reveals his signature method of extraction you can do virtually anywhere with little to no odor. THE FATHER If there is one thing Curry has come to understand in this world, it is balance. Just as important as the pH balance of the body is the pH balance of life. Stemming from the love of his wife Shantal and his 15-month-old daughter, Phionna Julep, Curry balances his business life with his personal life, blending them in certain instances, but always making time for each. It was clear that little Phionna was the center of Curry’s world. He took a break from our interview to tend to his daughter, freshly woken from her afternoon nap and ready for a snack. During this break, he shared the project his wife is currently working on: A small corner of their home that has been completely transformed into a small working kitchen, designed for filming cannabis-friendly cooking segments, which will soon be hitting the airwaves. The family came together for a quick hug before going back to their tasks, but it was obvious that Curry’s balance with his family is his secret ingredient for successful living. THE ENTREPRENEUR Curry’s spirit to pioneer has always been evident, whether he’s developing a restaurant concept, experimenting with flavor profiles or extracting alternative sugars from the cannabis root ball system for use in diabetic edibles. He continues to push the boundaries and stretch the limits of what we know, and even what proclaimed experts think they know, when it comes to edible cannabis.

Curry is currently developing several edible programs nationwide, partnering with independent farmers to provide the first truly locally grown, organic edible line that provides a level of nutrition only achievable by using the freshest ingredients. He calls this movement, “Support Vocal,” which encourages the community supporting these farms to speak out about and spread the word about the products and continue connecting like-minded people. With a desire to get edibles in the hands and mouths of the people who need them most, combined with an emphasis on the importance of proper nutrition with medication, it’s safe to say that more people will be able to dose more effectively inside a proper diet in the near future, thanks to people like Payton Curry who are using their expertise to bring further understanding to an already knowledgeable industry. THE PHILANTHROPIST Affectionately known by those around him as “Weed Jesus”, Curry’s giving nature has more than allowed him to live up to his name. He has truly taken advantage of promoting his Medical Marijuana Program and like always, he is taking it to the legal limit. Curry was traveling when we first contacted him and after a brief conversation, we discovered that his story takes him more places than

the kitchen. Curry is on a mission — a mission to help those who were at a loss for one reason or another — but all of whom had something in common. Each of the individuals Curry visits are people who suffered from a host of ailments, ranging from epilepsy to autism to lupus and beyond. Essentially, these people have become his patients. Using his knowledge of nutrition, his expertise as a chef and his passion for cannabis, Curry is helping families close the doors on big pharma and open them up to the possibilities of healing with cannabis. “Assistance with one disease led me to helping with another, with major developments happening right here in Arizona.” said Curry. His actions aren’t the only thing of notoriety, however. Curry views cannabis as a vegetable, as it contains nutritional value needed as part of a daily diet, and the potential to bring homeopathic balance to body and mind. He is redefining the industry from the inside out. Among his patients are veterans who suffer from a variety of severe issues, who he is helping through his Weed for Warriors Program, to bring normalcy to those adjusting back to civilan life. More info can be found at www.wfwprogram.org. THE CHEF Curry realized he had a passion for the culinary arts when he was just a teenager. Starting as a dishwasher, he worked his way up to becoming a head chef by age 20 and even attended the prestigious

La Cordon Bleu Chefs Academy before gaining further reputation at the esteemed Brat Haus in Scottsdale. Curry is regularly featured on a variety of cooking segments, including Sonoran Living, which emphasizes the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet using ingredients found at farmers markets and home grown gardens. In the last four years Curry has completely reinvented himself. Not only as a chef, but as an individual. After confronting a 12-year battle with alcoholism, Curry turned to marijuana to help with his withdrawals. Utilized his cooking knowledge and understanding of fats, Curry began creating tinctures to help rebalance his endocrine system. “Marijuana saved my life,” confessed Curry. “I don’t have the urge to drink anymore.” To remind himself of how far he has come, he keeps his 24-hour sobriety token in small container he keeps with him at all times, which he calls his “Pandora’s Box.” The box might have taken a more somber tone had it not also contained half a dozen joints along with his one piece of serious nostalgia. Together they represent his healthy vision of finding balance. Armed with his new lease on life and his new passion in cooking, Curry started experimenting in the kitchen, resulting in an entire line of cannabis infused edibles that range from tinctures to treats, gluten-free chips and even fruit leather created especially for females. Curry plans on releasing several of his own products over the next few months via his website, www.PaytonCurry.com. Aside from his personal culinary experimentations, Curry is also the Executive Chef of www.MarijuanaRecipes.com, which features a vast array of recipes and techniques people can use to create some amazing cannabis cuisine of their own.

“ASSISTANCE WITH ONE DISEASE, LED ME TO HELPING WITH ANOTHER, WITH MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN ARIZONA.”

SOUSWEED How does Curry make all of these tasty items? His signature SousWeed method is a play on a French cooking technique in which food is placed in plastic bags then placed in a temperature controlled water bath in constant motion. The best part about this process is that you can execute the same steps at home. HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

° 1 large glass container, such as a 10-gallon fish tank ° 1 Nomiku immersion circulator (available at www.nomiku.com) ° 8 oz. jars filled with bud (the leafy part of the marijuana flower containing THC) ° Cooking fat such as olive oil, coconut oil, clarified butter, avocado oil, etc. DIRECTIONS:

1. Fill the jar with bud 2. Top jar off with fat of choice 3. Screw on lid tight 4. Immerse in water for 40 minutes at 190 degrees F 5. Strain fat from buds and use in any recipe

BUD BUTTER RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

° 1 oz. of cannabis extracted by above method ° 2 quarts of boiling water ° 8 oz. unsalted butter DIRECTIONS:

Decarboxylate cannabis in the oven at 240 degrees for 40 minutes. Add butter to boiling water and let melt. Add ‘turned on’ cannabis to boiling water and butter. Simmer for 2 hours. Strain cannabis from liquid. Chill liquid for approx. 2 hours. Strain fat from top, leaving dark liquid behind. Use knife or spatula to enjoy as a buttery spread.

WEED AND CHEESE BOARD INGREDIENTS:

° 1 dollop of goat cheese ° Several slices of salami ° Spoon full of orange marmalade ° Pita chips ° Drizzle 2 oz. of tincture over goat cheese

Safe Kids

KEEPING YOUR CANNABIS AND OTHER MEDICINES STORED SAFELY AWAY FROM CHILDREN Cannabis is a medication and should be stored accordingly; and as any cannabis user can tell you, storage is paramount! Just as important, is keeping your cannabis and other medicines stored safely away from children. However, if you are a parent, you know how difficult it can be to keep things away from kids and in fact, every day throughout the country, children are being treated in emergency rooms for ingesting cannabis edibles and prescription drugs. SafeKids Worldwide reports that children unintentionally ingesting medication that belong to their parents or other family members accounts for 43% of young children’s visits to the emergency room. It was also found that 81% of medicinerelated calls about children to poison centers were a result of unintended ingestion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Child Injury Prevention Alliance reports that as more states start to legalize marijuana, which has provided many health benefits to those who require it, the rate children have been exposed to marijuana has doubled since 2000. Fortunately, cannabis is non-toxic and has not resulted in fatality from overdose. Although ingesting cannabis edibles may produce harmful side effects for children, prescription medicines are a different story altogether and have the potential of being deadly. The act of not storing your cannabis and other medicines responsibly, creates a potentially hazardous environment for the child, the family and any guests who may enter the home. Thankfully, you can now sleep soundly knowing your medicines are locked up tight. Through the passionate efforts of twin brothers, Graeme and Steven Gordon, SneakGuard was founded in 2014. It provides a safe storage solution to keep medications and cannabis from becoming unintentionally ingested in the home. It was created with the intent to responsibly store medications and enhance everyday quality of life.

Purple Haze Jimi Hendrix’s Legacy Lives on in his Brother … and Medicated Macaroons BY BUSTER BLAKENEY

48

BLAZED420

APRIL / MAY 2016

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I was asked to interview Leon Hendrix, brother of one of rock ‘n’ roll music’s greatest luminaries and newly-minted cannabis entrepreneur. They’d also asked me to take a tour of the Purple Haze Properties, the company through which Hendrix is launching a line of Jimi-inspired cannabis lifestyle products. I’m more than a fan of Jimi Hendrix; I’m a devotee. I can’t count the times I’ve watched his face-melting performance of “Like a Rolling Stone” at the Monterey Pop Festival, and it was a rare day in high school when I didn’t listen to Are You Experienced from start to finish at least once. So to say I was a little skeptical would be an understatement. But my skepticism started to fade as I waited in the Purple Haze Properties lobby in the heart of the Sunset Strip, not far from where in 1967 The Doors might be jamming at the Sea Witch, or Phil Spector’s limo would cruise by. Or if you were very lucky, run into the legend himself — Jimi Hendrix. On the walls of the PHP offices hangs multiple portraits of Jimi, many of them done by their in-house artists, alongside mockups for new products ranging from medicated macaroons (with aptly-named flavors like “Foxy Lady” Strawberry and “Purple Haze” Blueberry) to cannabis-infused olive oil (naturally

punned “Burning the Midnight Oil”). The atmosphere is one of business, to be sure, but Jimi’s essence seems to permeate the place like so much weed smoke. And then I meet Leon. He greets me, his manner echoing that of Jimi’s playful coyness in interviews. “Hey man. What’s your name?” “Buster,” I tell him, expecting a laugh or the double take, a response I’ve come to expect. Instead, his eyes go wide. “That’s my brother’s name!” he exclaims. “He never answered to James.” He’s referring to Jimi’s confusing history of endless name changes. Jimi was born Johnny Allen Hendrix, but his father, upon return from the Army, changed it to James Marshall Hendrix. “Johnny was my mom’s boyfriend’s name,” Leon tells me. “My dad couldn’t stand it.” But his longest-lasting nickname was yet to come. Leon and Jimi’s respite from relative poverty in Seattle came from the local movie house where, for a nickel, the brothers would watch Flash Gordon serials starring Buster Crabbe. Jimi decided then and there that his name would be Buster, and upon returning home, wrapped himself in a blanket for a cape and promptly jumped out a window. “Buster busted his ankle,” he laughs with a grin at the cherished memory. As I talk to Leon, it becomes clear that regardless of what history, the public, or lawyers say, he believes that he and his children are the closest thing to true descendants of Jimi, who died childless. Even Leon’s son, “Little Jimi”, who was born on what would have been Jimi’s 42nd birthday, believes there’s something cosmic tying the whole affair together. Though Little Jimi favors mixing boards to guitars, there’s something indisputably similar to his rock star uncle, and I realize that Leon and his family are continuing Jimi’s legacy the best way they know how. But if Leon is the soul of Purple Haze Properties, Andrew Pitsicalis, the company’s CEO, is the heart and the brains. Cheery and widesmiling, Andrew greets me in his offices where a giant LED TV with the Purple Haze Properties logo splayed across it hangs on one wall, and several ornately-blown glass bongs lining another. “Functional art,” he corrects me before taking a rip from one of them that would make Willie Nelson balk. He grins again as he exhales, and for a moment, my brain has trouble reconciling the cloud of weed smoke billowing from the portly, maybe-middle-aged guy smiling back at me like a teenager. Quiet intelligence emanates from his eyes, drawing me in despite the obscurity of it all. Pitsicalis fires up the TV on the wall and starts to explain that Purple Haze Properties is much more than just a line of Jimibranded weed paraphernalia and tchotchkes; a statement he soon backs up with his slideshow presentation on the large flat screen. He explains the multi-pronged affair in detail. There are three divisions — Jimi’s Edibles, Jimi’s Genetix, and Jimi’s Meds — each

APRIL / MAY 2016

BLAZED420 49

focusing on a different product line and revenue stream. Jimi’s Edibles is their culinary division, offering the aforementioned macaroons and olive oils alongside dozens of other products. I scan the designs and the names of each delicious-sounding, cannabis-infused treat: Maui Sunset saltwater taffy, New Rising Sun breakfast bars, Traffic Jam jelly spread, and Whammy Bar Ice Cream Bars. There are even cannabis-oil-infused Kale Chips, for the health-conscious stoner in your life. I silently resolve to ask Pitsicalis for samples of everything on the list before we move on to Jimi’s Genetix, the line of strains influenced by both Jimi’s music and the spirit of popular buds of the 60s and 70s. Leon tells me of the popularity of Panama Red, one of his and his late brother’s favorites, and possibly the most celebrated pot strain of the rock ‘n’ roll era. But Pitsicalis is no stranger to pot history, either, having displayed a green thumb at an early age to go along with his business acumen. Another grin spreads across Pitsicalis’ face as he tells me of his first horticultural endeavor, a backyard affair in the mid 90s when he was still an amateur enthusiast. “I still got a P out of it,” he whoops proudly. But the evidence of how far he’s come is plain to see as he tosses me a pack of prerolleds made from one of their Jimi’s Genetix strains. Adorning the pack is a hologram of Jimi waving to a crowd at Woodstock. As kitschy as it sounds, part of me can’t help but smile at how awesome the little touch is. It’s almost as awesome as the jar of Maui Sunset that Pitsicalis cracks open for me next. “You really smell those lovely floral, citrusy notes,” he swoons with the enthusiasm of a winemaker explaining one of his better vintages. I nod and smile and try to palm a particularly juicy nug. “You can just have that,” he says. I realize that his cheery demeanor isn’t entirely independent of the entrepreneur/ businessman running a successful brand. The third division Purple Haze Properties is developing is

Jimi’s Meds, a CBD-focused line of cannabis medications for patients such as cancer sufferers and those seeking a safer alternative to system-wrecking pain meds. Pitsicalis and Leon’s demeanor changes as they explain the Meds division, and the air of passionate, giggly enthusiasm is promptly replaced by one of serious commitment to care. Often skeptics hear the term “patient” to describe marijuana users looking to get around the law, but Pitsicalis assures me that a lot of these don’t have psychoactive effects. “That one is just CBDs. Just pain relief,” he says, passing me a beautiful pink macaroon. Other products still are designed to cater to the cannabis-assuperfood market. “It’s like a wellness shot when you go to a smoothie place,” Pitsicalis explains. “You pay a little extra for the supplement that calms you or boosts your creativity.” But the crowning jewel in the Hendrix-Cannabis strata is Jimi’s Lounge, a planned property on the Hollywood Boulevard strip that will be a live music venue, cannabis lounge, and retail location. “We’ve already bought the building,” he beams. “It’s an awesome location right in the heart of Hollywood, and we’ve got guys putting up millions of dollars to build out the space.” The space he’s referring to sounds like a rock ‘n’ roll cannabis enthusiast’s Mecca. It’s no small wonder that his presentation decks project over $100 million in revenue by year five. “Imagine being able to check out awesome live music, then step into a medication lounge and being able to pick up some Captain Coconut and light up, hassle-free, then head back in to catch more rock ‘n’ roll.” He’s caught up in his vision, and for a minute, Leon and I dream along with him. “I think Jimi could get down like that,” I say. Leon and Pitsicalis nod knowingly, smiles playing along their faces.

I think Jimi could get down like that... 50

This was my first experience medicating with a THC/CBD shatter. Research shows a 2-to-1 ratio of THC to CBD gives the maximum therapeutic benefits. Recently there have been discussions surrounding the halo effect or entourage effect from using the full spectrum of the cannabis plant. I was excited to experience it firsthand. After taking my first dab, I felt wonderful. The vapor was smooth and sweet and I felt a nice calming head high accentuated by a head-to-toe body high. If you have not tried THC and CBD together, I highly recommend it. RATING:

The K-Vape 24K Limited Edition vaporizer pen from Kandypens is a sleekly designed dry herb vaporizer. This easy-to-use vaporizer holds up to half a gram of herb and can vaporize at three different temperature settings. The on switch turns green when the chamber is fully heated, and a color-changing LED indicates whether the pen is set to low, medium or high. At the low and medium settings, no smoke was generated and that made this pen hit much smoother than most concentrate vaporizers. The K-Vape comes with an aluminum grinder, cleaning kit and easily changeable mouthpieces. This vaporizer is recommended for patients who are looking for a way to medicate that is easy on the lungs, or for the on-the-go smoker who needs a discrete delivery method that won’t leave their car smelling like Tommy Chong’s basement.

Mary’s Medicinals Mary’s Medicinals (www.marysmedicinals. com) carries a host of medical THC, CBD and CBN products, so this was not a one-day review process. I used all of the products over the course of a week and wanted to share my favorites and what worked for me. Interestingly enough, on the same day I received the product line for testing, I had a flare-up of an existing injury. I dealt with the pain until finally having the opportunity that evening to use the CBD (Cannabidol) Muscle Freeze, followed by the CBD/THC 1:1 Compound, which began working upon application and allowed me to comfortably rest through the night without the use of sleep aids or pain medication. I applied it again first thing in the morning and combined it with a 5mg CBD capsule. I was good to go for the day with no pain. The following day was packed with events, so I opted for a combo of trans-dermal patches. I tried the THC Indica patch and the CBN(Cannabinol) patch, which both included a few extra clicks from my THC gel pen for my preferred dosage. This, mixed with a few drops of CBD Tincture, enveloped me in a warm embrace that lasted 12 hours.

Over the next few days, I tried various combinations of products with various results, but what I discovered was consistency. What I experienced on one day, I experienced equally on another. This gave me a sense of trust with the products, knowing I could assess my needs for the day and dose accordingly … being fully confident with the results. I was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of this product line and have already recommended it to several people who I believe would greatly benefit from it. Mary’s has made me a believer. RATING:

The Clear THC Oil In my line of work, I have to try almost every brand of cartridge on the market. One conclusion I can easily draw: The Clear is one of the best, ranking at the top for taste and potency. The Clear cartridges come in 15 flavors and are available in both 600 mg and 300 mg of THC Oil. They contain no PG (propylene glycol), but instead are infused with MCT oil. All of the flavors are derived from natural terpenes, so the flavor you taste is as advertised. I was lucky enough to sample Blue Raz, Golden Goat, Potent Pineapple and Orange Cream. They were amazing. Regarding the potency … the Clear cartridges are extremely effective. After only a few draws of vapor, you will be medicated. And the best part: it is produced using a solvent-less process. RATING:

The Intersection of Science and Cannabis

BRINGS A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR AMERICA As the legal cannabis industry continues to grow in the United States, the wisdom of master growers is now intersecting with modern science and technology. The disciplines of agricultural science, botany, genetics, and chemistry have focused their attention on this previously taboo research subject. This is yet another example of how legal cannabis has led to highly skilled job growth and is bringing an innovative revolution to medical and agricultural research in the United States. Research in plant biology, and more specifically, genetics, is now unlocking the secrets of this mysterious plant. University scientists are partnering with private research groups and legal cannabis growers to sequence the genome of well known cannabis strains. This information reveals the heritage of these strains going back thousands of years — think ancestry.com for pot! Geneticists can match DNA markers in cannabis with known traits such as flowering time, color, terpene profiles, and nutrient needs. This genetic information will take out a lot of the guesswork and allow growers to breed new strains with desired traits more quickly. Chemists are also enjoying the cannabis boom. Analytical chemists are building labs across the country that can measure cannabis potency and test legal cannabis for safety. The states of Washington, Colorado and Oregon are establishing limits on synthetic pesticides and more states will soon follow. More work

will need to be done to establish national testing standards for this crop that has been overlooked for too long by the FDA. Organic chemists are racing to improve the manufacturing of extracts, increasing the efficiency and quality of the finished products. Who knows what the future holds for cannabis research. Will we have custom flavor profiles? Bigger yields? Will consumers accept the use of genetic engineering? Other countries that have already accepted cannabis as medicine, such as Israel, have a big head start against U.S. research. As more U.S. universities and private companies jump into the cannabis research game, America could very soon become a world leader in the science of cannabis. This research is expected to create jobs and enable growers and extractors to improve the quality of their product.

TAKING THE HIGH ROAD WITH MEGAN STONE The High Road Design Studio redefines the dispensary-going experience

Interior designer Megan Stone established The High Road Design Studio in 2013, the first company of its kind to focus on cannabis retail design. Stone’s determination and unique eye for composition, combined with her desire to provide an upscale, comfortable location for patients to purchase medication, led her to design the nationally recognized concentrate bar at TruMed Dispensary located in Phoenix at 40th Street and McDowell Road. Prior to coming to Arizona, Stone experienced the first hand impacts of how proper branding and displays can play a key role in the success of a cannabis business. Originally a patient, Stone worked as a general manager of two dispensaries in Orange County before assisting dispensaries in seven different states with the development of their brands image, product display and overall patient satisfaction. Once in Arizona, she received the 2015 Designer Dozen Award by Visual Merchandising and Store Design Magazine and has received several accolades through a host of publications, from Forbes to Culture Magazine. More than an emerging star, her impact on the industry has been set in Stone, so to speak. Earlier this year, Stone was named a finalist in the 23rd Annual Association for Retail Environments Design Awards Competition. To put that into perspective, other finalists include CHANEL, Target, Nordstrom and more internationally known retail powerhouses. The prestigious national award recognizes innovative retail design considered to be game-changers in modern retail. “I am honored to be recognized alongside the talents of these national and international firms. I want to prove to the world that cannabis is an elegant, beautiful product,” said Stone. “My goal is to display the product as though it were as luxurious as fine jewelry or as decadent as gourmet confections.” Actively involved in the daily what’s-what and who’s-who of the retail cannabis industry, Stone proved herself in her role as marketing and advising coordinator for the nationally renowned TruMed Dispensary. Even before you step through the doors, the building itself makes an impressive statement that is carried throughout the shopping expereince. Once greeted by the always friendly and ever knowledgeable

staff, customers are whisked away to a world of THC. From the glowing surfaces, to the glittering display cases and the prominent hi-res images of the esteemed products, each element works in harmony with the other to provide a full-sensory experience that is nothing short of perfection. When Stone isn’t consumed with patient projects and elevating professional cannabis business brands to new levels of success, she enjoys an active life style in the outdoors, traveling and spending time in the kitchen, as well as keeping connected with her friends and family. Without a doubt, Stone has made an impressive impact on the cannabis industry that has set the bar high for dispensaries across the nation. Yet she has only just scratched the surface, with her new position as contributing editor on retail design for MG Magazine. We can’t wait to see what she has “in store” for us next and remember, there are a lot of dispensaries out there, but a good one is just a Stone’s throw away. / ASK THE O.G. / BY W. GRANT HOW TO GET GROWING TODAY

Q / Where can you grow marijuana plants? Can people just stick them in a sunny window next to basil and aloe? A: A big thing to remember with marijuana plants is that they need to flower to produce THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical that gets people high) and other medicinal cannabinoids. In order to do that, they need 12 hours of light and 12 hours of total darkness a day. Look to grow marijuana in a dark room like the basement with a sealed door so light doesn’t leak in when the plants are “sleeping.” If you don’t have a basement, a small closet with light-leak seal for protection will work. Local hydroponics shops will also offer grow tents that are light-proof.

Q / Do you need special growing equipment? A: All sorts of pre-packaged items are available, like grow boxes or grow tents, which are best for a small space like a closet. These are also good for people who don’t want to grow marijuana too intensely. Just keep in mind temperatures are best kept 76 degrees during the day and 68 at night. Lighting is important depending on the space and number of plants. For an individual looking to grow 12 robust plants, they would need 600 to 1000 watt HPS light, but keep in mind high-powered lights may require extra cooling in the environment. You also have to watch humidity because every time you water plants in a small space you increase the humidity of the environment. Humidity levels should remain below 50 percent to prevent bud mold or rot. You can measure humidity with a hygrometer from a hardware or grow store, and adjust the levels using a dehumidifier or air conditioner.

SUPERCRITICAL CO2 EXTRACTION

CO2 extracts or concentrates are the hottest commodity in the cannabis industry today. Refined CO2 extracts are used in nearly all edibles and vape pens. Most CO2 extracts and concentrates are made with the “trim” from cannabis flower production and manicuring. The demand for CO2 extracts has been steadily climbing. Large cannabis producers are mostly ignoring this trend and continue to sell trim to third party extractors, leaving considerable money on the table. So why not simply produce CO2 extracts at the grow and open up another revenue stream? If you ask Mark W., a Southern California master grower, you get a simple answer, “CO2 extraction equipment is too expensive and it looks too complicated.” Sorry Mark, but both of those statements are off-base. If you can operate a large grow, you can run CO2 extraction equipment with ease. Consider leasing or financing this equipment. A single operator and a single medium capacity CO2 extraction machine can produce several pounds of CO2 oil per day.

Q / What are the legal restrictions for home growers in Arizona? A: The ADHS guidelines state that individuals with a medical marijuana patient or caregiver cards can grow only 12 plants at a time and must live at least 25 miles from nearest Arizona MMJ dispensary. Having a home garden is great but make sure to closely review the patient and caregiver rights and laws on the Medical Marijuana Program page at www.azdhs.com. Because getting in trouble is never fun.

Q / How much does all this stuff cost? A: Most grow boxes are $200 to $400, but if you want one with HVAC temperature-control capabilities, it’s pretty pricey — close to $1,000. You can find grow boxes at most local hydroponic stores or grow shops. While these gardens can get very sophisticated and pricey, I use the simple age-old rule of less is more and keep it simple. 64

/ HIGH ART /

BY JESSE PERRY

NO BLACK LIGHTS NEEDED Eric Herrmann’s unique style brings class to cannabis art

Art is more than a pass time for Eric Herrmann and his son Dustin, it’s a way of life. Together as a father-son duo, they travel the United States to a variety of festivals and events ranging from Motorsports to the Cannabis Conference. With more than 40 years of experience perfecting his craft, Eric Herrmann is rapidly becoming one of the industry’s leading artists and there’s no doubt, he’s just getting started.

SIGNATURE STYLE Herrmann has been a professional artist all his life and is well known in the Motor Sports Industry for his style of artwork, which has been developed and refined for the past four decades. His work mainly consisted of motorcycles and vehicles with sparkling paint jobs, polished chrome and surreal landscapes that can only be described as “far out man!” However, his focused changed a few years ago when his son Dustin suggested they work on some cannabis art together. “I went to art school in the ‘70s so I’ve been smoking weed a long time,” said Herrmann. At that time, cannabis-related art was associated more with black light images more suitable for dorm rooms than galleries and he realized he had a desire to bring his unique style to the industry. After visiting with customers throughout dispensaries, he decided he wanted to create artwork he felt had a finer quality and matched the more refined consumer. The result of which is some truly outstanding artwork. INSPIRATION Herrmann has always been inspired by the creativity of the cannabis community. He finds himself just as enthusiastic about creators and consumers as he does the industry’s products. “It’s pretty easy to be creative when you’re working with people that are as enthusiastic about cannabis as you are,” said Herrmann, which led him to having opportunities to work with so many of the industry’s leading companies including RAW Papers, Oil Slick, Kind Tray, Perk-Tech and many others. “By placing these products in my artwork (and visa-versa), I can help them bring their products to the next level.”

/ IT’S PRETTY EASY TO BE CREATIVE WHEN YOU’RE WORKING WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE AS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT CANNABIS AS YOU ARE... / 66

APRIL / MAY 2016

PROCESS Marijuana has played a key role in Herrmann’s creative process by helping him focus for long periods of time, often spending more than 10 hours standing at his easel bringing his canvases to life. Herrmann confesses that he didn’t understand the medical benefits as a young adult, but now at 60 years old and a lifetime of motorcycle racing injuries (including more than 40 broken bones), he fully understands the healing benefits that marijuana has on his body. By alleviating his inflamed joints and daily pain, Herrmann is able to continue painting. “I only have so many paintings left in my lifetime and marijuana has helped me to create more,” he said. GIVING BACK Herrmann is proud to be at the leading edge of legalization and is truly giving back to the cannabis community by advocating the industry through his art. By lending his work to the power of legalization, Herrmann is bringing more awareness and legitimacy to the industry through clothing, posters, dispensaries, a variety of marketing materials and beyond.

PROJECTS Recently traveling to the Southwest Cannabis Conference in Fort Worth and then to Daytona Beach Florida for Bike Week, Herrmann is busy promoting his work and finding ways to create new products. From the unique line of hanging rolling trays, to metal panel printing and reproduced Giclee canvas prints, Herrmann and his son are finding ways to stay current, as well as cut their teeth on upcoming products, including the new Sweet Stone Candy Company’s Medical Gummy Bears. Although Herrmann has been featured in many museums and is represented in more than 40 countries, he anxiously awaits the day of open acceptance of cannabis artwork in the fine art realm. Until that day, Herrmann is happy to say that his work gives him the luxury of standing behind the products he believes in and will continue to advocate the industry which has helped make him who he is. “HEY, IT’S FAMILY” Paraphernalia Boutique

www.paraphernaliaboutique.com Started in 1976, Paraphernalia Boutique staked its claim as Arizona’s first, true head-shop and quickly gained notoriety as a lifestyle brand among its customers thanks to the efforts of owner Barbara Zevits. Gathering droves of loyal customers, over the decades, Paraphernalia became synonymous with all manner of smoking devices, apparatus, apparel and more. Three and a half years ago, after hearing that his aunt’s business was in need of assistance, Chris Morris, also known as C-Mo, accepted the daunting task, packed up and made the move cross country from New York to Arizona to take a look at Paraphernalia with a pair of fresh eyes. What he saw was a premier business opportunity that had only scratched the surface of its potential. Now established for over 3 years in his new home, C-Mo’s East Coast attitude has hybridized with his Southwest education to bring you the all new, vocal and local, Paraphernalia Boutique. As a customer myself, starting as early as 15 years ago, I remember being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of products they carried, making it difficult to choose what worked best for me. So, it was a pleasant shock walking back through the doors for the interview after having not frequented the shop in some time. Natural light broke through the windows illuminating the properly spaced shelves and display cases, beautifully stocked with a healthy mix of local and nationally

/ ... WHEN YOU DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT IT. IT’S JUST SECOND NATURE. / acclaimed products and brands, both trendy as well as the tried-and-true. Hidden in the layout you’ll find unique memorabilia and cult classic kick backs to cannabis culture that span the decades, the walls continue to be adorned by their ever impressive High Times collection, but one of the newest aspects of the shop is also the friendliest; the Customer Parking Zone compliments the contemporary direction of the shop, complete with seating area, games, charging station, educational materials and more. Not to mention, each patron is greeted with an ice-cold bottle of water as they enter, to offset the AZ sunshine. Without a doubt, the new direction of Paraphernalia Boutique is more than just an idea, it’s a reality. After rebranding the shop’s image and developing a system to stay on top of all the modern merch, Morris began focusing on distribution and expansion through Paraphernalia West Distribution. “I’m expecting to open a few more shops this year”, said C-Mo who has been working with several local glass blowers and product developers to share what AZ has to offer with the rest of the country, by staking out new distribution avenues and increase the shop’s presence in the community and at festivals. Thanks to his connections in New York, Morris intends on placing a second flagship store in heart of New York, setting the stage to establish more of “America’s Original Head Shop” across the states, and set the standard of expectations for the modern head shop business model. What that breaks down to is ensuring that each store can act as a launch pad for a blend of products, both local

and beyond, giving vendors and artists the opportunity to showcase their merchandise. This stems from industry research, listening to employees as well as customers about positive products, connecting with the community and local vendors to bring diversity to each location, while still having a core of consistent products that can be found in each and every location. Just being there for the short amount of time, it was quickly made clear that from the moment they open, they are a swarm of activity. From scheduled deliveries to random vendor walk-ins combined with the average customer flow, the shop was alive with activity, exchange,

conversation and education. It was amazing to learn just how many local items are featured at the shop, from the distinguished Frank Pipes, to the precision dynamics of the Kindtray, to the newly branded Eagle Glass Flower Rig, to the funky Pokit Mon pokers, or the decorative aspects of 8th Planets cactus pipes and the list keeps going. But by far, one of the best local products featured is the Phoenician. This grand daddy grinder comes in a variety of sizes and styles, including a 24K plated issue for you true investors out there. This expertly engineered device is as beautiful as it is innovative. Completely influenced by sacred geometry, the Phoenician uses a patented interlocking method instead of groves as well as diametric teeth to chop your medicine to optimum size, which sifts to the second chamber for collection and is completed with a machine bowled pollen catcher. Oh yeah, the large size features a paper dispenser and ashtray. Of course, C-Mo understands the importance of featuring an array of well known products as well, including Jerome Baker, RooR, RAW and so many more. By ensuring consistency through a core of trustworthy product lines, Morris is able experiment and branch out to new, exciting ventures which ultimately result in the further discovery and development of the brand voice Paraphernalia has come to command. Through sheer determination, will, passion and a little luck, C-Mo and his team have blazed through the bull$&!# to find Paraphernalia’s place in the modern market as well as ensuring a foothold in the future. “I think when you do something you love and you’re passionate about it. It’s just second nature”, said C-Mo. There couldn’t more truth to his words. C-Mo has managed to turn an iconic piece of Arizona culture around and ensured that a platform remains for local artists to limelight their new and progressive products for years to come, all while, “... keeping it in the family”.
