On the field, bountiful Bulldog teams and individuals have qualified for a number of NCAA Championships. In its final four years of Division II competition, 55 teams qualified for the postseason, including all 22 sports in the Bulldogs’ unprecedented 2007-08 campaign. Six teams captured Northeast-10 Conference titles in Bryant’s final year of Division II play, three of them winning both the regular season and the league tournament. In 2007-08, Bryant athletic teams made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, featured seven AllAmerica picks, 15 all-region selections, 60 allconference accolades, two conference Coach of the Year honors, two tournament MVPs and one conference Player of the Year en route to its fourth Northeast-10 President’s Cup Trophy in the last five years. That year alone, the Bulldogs boasted 24 academic all-conference selections.
Athletics in 2008-09, and to amazing results. With each of Bryant’s 22 programs earning its first Division I win, the Bulldogs knocked off teams from the Big East, Ivy League, America East, Patriot League, ACC, Atlantic 10 and CAA en route to a truly impressive year, both on the field and off. Four teams would finish .500 or better, including football, baseball and men’s lacrosse, while golf took first place at the New England Championships. The men’s lacrosse program received votes in both national polls while 124 student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll. Bryant will continue DI competition during its fouryear reclassification period before becoming a full member of the NEC in 2012-13. Bryant offers 22 varsity sports, with its most recent addition to the Bulldog community coming in 2005 with the debut of men’s and women’s swimming. In addition to its intercollegiate sports programs, Bryant also offers 11 club sports teams and a popular intramural program throughout the academic year.
The University saw the men’s lacrosse team earn a national No. 1 ranking in its final year of Division II, while women’s soccer enjoyed its highest national ranking in program history, grabbing the No. 2 spot. Other nationally ranked teams in 2007-08 included baseball, field hockey and men’s tennis. The Bulldogs opened up a new era of Bryant

Why is his name tupper? Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the Tupperware Corporation. Mr. Tupper donated his 220acre Smithfield farm estate to what was then Bryant College on October 24, 1967. Tupper, who had originally planned to sell his estate, was so impressed with Bryant that he decided to donate the land instead, allowing Bryant to move from its original location on Providence’s East Side to its current Smithfield, R.I. residence. Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move, Tupper the Bulldog was born.
Bryant student-athletes have won eight ECAC Championships among seven different sports.

meet president the &ad Hon. Ronald K. Machtley Bryant University President
nder the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley, Bryant University has evolved into one of the most progressive and leading institutions of higher learning in New England.
U
Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ardent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming the University’s seventh president in 1996. Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiated the most significant enhancements to the Bryant campus and community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams with the addition of football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swimming. The addition of the new varsity programs brought about an overhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. These renovations are highlighted by the construction of Bulldog Stadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fields for baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired and supported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitness center that is second to none. Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s leading public servants. He served
as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He was also the ranking Republican on the Small Business Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance and Urban Development Subcommittee and cofounder of the first House Working Group on Mental Health. As a reflection of the esteem in which his congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Machtley was elected president of his congressional class during each of his terms in the House. Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtley served as a partner in the international telecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida. President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He earned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in 1978 and served on active duty in the United States Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 years of service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of the United States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995 and currently serves on the boards of several corporations, as well as on the boards of many civic and charitable organizations. President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have two children and reside on the Bryant campus with their two dogs, Sandy and Paddington. Their son, Todd, is an undergraduate at Muhlenberg College. Their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova University in 1998.
BILL SMITH Director of Athletics ill Smith came to Bryant University in August of 2006, after spending eight years at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He joined the Iowa State athletic department as compliance director in 1998 before being promoted to associate athletic director in 2002 and then senior associate athletic director in 2005.
B
At Iowa State, Smith managed oversight responsibilities for compliance, academic services, sports medicine, athletic training and strength and conditioning. Under his leadership and direction, Iowa State successfully developed an Academic Plan for Student-Athlete Academic Services, resulting in ISU's 89 percent
student-athlete graduation rate. A total of 290 student-athletes have earned Big 12 Conference Honor Roll recognition since 2001. While serving as compliance coordinator at ISU, Smith was appointed chair of the Big 12 Conference compliance coordinators group. During that time, he was also a member of the University's steering committee for NCAA Certification. Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, Smith served as executive associate director for compliance and championships for the Patriot League for one year. In that role, he managed 19 conference events, was the conference's
primary liaison with all coaches’ groups and directed league-wide compliance education programs. A native of Auburn, NY, Smith graduated from Colgate University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in political science. During his time at Colgate, Smith played both football and lacrosse (1985-89) and was awarded the Tom Dodge Award in 1989 for exemplifying outstanding effort, determination and performance. Smith and his wife, Maura, have four children: Molly, Liam, Daniel and Marin.
2009 Bryant university
DIVISION I, YEAR II: A 2009 SEASON PREVIEW n its first year of Division I competition, the Bryant University volleyball program did more than just hold its own — the 2008 Bulldogs proved that they are where they belong.
I
And now, in its second year at the pinnacle of the NCAA ladder, Bryant volleyball must do it again, and then some. After a 16-win season last year, earning wins over teams from such conferences as the Ivy League, the Patriot League, the America East and Bryant’s future home in the Northeast Conference, opponents will be looking for revenge in 2009. But the Bulldogs are also looking to repay some losses of their own this season, and with a core of five returning to the Chace Athletic Center Gymnasium, they are poised to do just that.
a freshman class that was integral to Bryant’s success in 2008. Bryant’s returning outside hitters accounted for two of the team’s top four point and kill getters in 2008 — Stoner at No. 3 (331.5, 298) and Geonnotti at No. 4 (183.5, 156) — and look to continue to contribute as much and more with another year of collegiate experience under their belts. But the Bulldogs will also welcome versatile newcomer Macy Mitravich (Waimanalo, Hawaii) to the outside hitter mix. A rookie who is known to create deadly angles at the net, Mitravich will add a new dimension of arm speed and quickness to an already strong line in 2009.
Despite playing in just 23 of the Bulldogs’ 35 matches last year, Boss finished fifth on the team in kills (148), blocks (30) and points (165) and will be expected to up those numbers with her return to full health. Versatile freshmen Mitravich and Kaup could also be called upon to help out at rightside.
And those returning letterwinners won’t be alone, as head coach Theresa Garlacy brings in a class of four solid rookies to help Bryant continue last year’s success at the Division I level. But even with a strong class of incoming freshmen, Garlacy — who sits at 360 career wins entering her 14th season at the helm — will need to fill the shoes of a trio of record-setting 2008 graduates if the Bulldogs wish to make a name for themselves in Division I.
senior outside hitter JULIE GEONNOTTI MIDDLE HITTER Arguably the Bulldogs’ top offensive player, 6-foot-2 sophomore Maria Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) returns to anchor the middle. A member of last year’s devastating freshman trio, Scocca is always a threat to thwart opposing attacks with her long arms and superior blocking skills, leading the team with 127 blocks (24 solo, 103 assists) in 2008. Scocca also led the 2008 Bulldogs in nearly every offensive category, including kills (343) and points (447).
sophomore middle hitter MARIA SCOCCA OUTSIDE HITTER Returning to lead the Bulldogs both on the court and off, senior co-captain Julie Geonnotti (St. Louis Park, Minn.) will anchor a front line that remains almost wholly intact from the 2008 season. Geonnotti and the rest of the Bulldogs also welcome back impact sophomore Jazmin Stoner (Durango, Colo.), who was part of
10
junior libero/defensive specialist ROBYN GARDNER
Scocca will be joined in the middle by newcomer Emily Kaup (Chandler, Ariz.). Standing at an even 6-foot, Kaup’s smoothness and grace on the court make her a strong blocker and an offensive threat from the outset. RIGHTSIDE Junior co-captain Adrienne Boss (Dracut, Mass.) will be looked upon to come back strong after missing the second half of her sophomore campaign with a back injury.
SETTER With the setter position wide open, Garlacy welcomes the return of now-senior Adriana Fuertes (Miramar, Puerto Rico) to join rookie Samantha Whitham (So. Weymouth, Mass.) to compete in a heated battle for the starting spot. But with her experience and success in 2008, Geonnotti will also be looked upon to contribute in the setting ranks and fill in at the quarterback role. Fuertes brings experience and stability to the position with her solid hands and knowledge of the Bulldog offense while Geonnotti can call upon her experience last season to guide the offense. Whitham, with her aggressive serve and tough mentality, will look to use her athleticism and furious work ethic to make an impact of her own. DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST After losing two defensive-minded seniors from last year’s roster, the Bulldogs throw the responsibilities to junior Robyn Gardner (Longwood, Fla.), who has spent two seasons improving her defensive game. Poised to take over as libero in 2009, Gardner will be looked toward to run the defense and push her teammates with her intensity and quickness. But freshman Rebecca Meyer (Commack, N.Y.) will be in the mix defensively, too, with quickness and dedication of her own.

reer coaching record of 360-159 (.694), with a final Division II mark of 344-140. She left Division II ranked No. 24 in winning percentage and No. 26 in career victories among active coaches and is the 17th most winningest coach in DII history. Garlacy leaves the NE-10 ranked second all-time in career wins.
In 2008, in her 13th year of coaching at Bryant, Garlacy guided her Bulldogs to a 16-19 record against a slate of proven Division I opponents, coming up with big wins against teams from not just the Northeast Conference, but programs from the Patriot League, the Ivy League and the America East as well, all the while setting program and season records along the way.
Garlacy has been involved with all 10 of Bryant's NCAA appearances, nine as head coach and one as an assistant.
During the 12 seasons prior to Bryant’s move to Division I, Garlacy led the Bulldogs to 10 NCAA Division II tournament appearances (including berths in the last nine seasons), an ECAC championship, five Northeast-10 Conference regular-season titles and seven appearances in the conference championship match, claiming five tournament titles. In 2007, Bryant's final season in Division II, the Bulldogs went out with a bang, winning not just the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season title with a perfect 14-0 conference record (32-13 overall), but also capturing the program's fifth Northeast-10 Conference tournament championship and 10th berth into the NCAA tournament, making it to the 2007 Sweet 16. Garlacy has accrued a myriad of accomplishments and milestones during her storied career, including recording the program’s 700th victory during the 2007 season. Garlacy notched her 100th career victory in 1999 — just four years into her head coaching career. Four years later, she earned win No. 200, following that with victory No. 300 on September 15, 2006. In just her second season as Bryant's head coach, Garlacy was recognized as the 1997 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a 28-13 record and an NCAA tournament appearance. In 1998, she led Bryant to the Northeast-10 Championship and the ECAC title, as Bryant finished with a 30-13 record. The Bulldogs returned to the NCAA field in 1999, despite losing five starters from the ’98 conference championship team, and made it two-straight national tournament appearances in 2000 despite having no seniors on the roster. Garlacy led a veteran squad to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2001 before taking the Bulldogs to the NCAA regional final a year later, leaving Bryant as one of the last 16 teams alive in the ’02 tournament. In 2003, the Bulldogs enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in school history, winning a school-record 37 matches and posting an undefeated Northeast-10 Conference record en route to the league regular-season and tournament titles. In recognition of her coaching efforts, Garlacy was named the 2003 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year. In 2004, the Bulldogs claimed yet another NE-10 Conference title with an undefeated record as well as the program's sixth-straight NCAA regional appearance, and in 2005, Bryant successfully defended its conference tournament championship, not only earning another berth in the NCAA tournament, but hosting the regional at the Chace Athletic Center. Over the years, Garlacy has served as a member of the NCAA regional volleyball committee, the ECAC championships committee and the NCAA volleyball rules committee. Honored by the Rhode Island Special Olympics with the Distinguished Service Award in 2003, Garlacy is a 1988 graduate of Providence College and earned a master's degree in teaching from Rhode Island College in 1992.

ROGER WILLIAMS ’91 BRYANT ‘04
s assistant coach Ted Garlacy enters his 16th year at Bryant University, a program would be hard-pressed to find a coach as devoted as Garlacy.
A
Assisting his wife, head coach Theresa Garlacy, Ted plays a key role in all aspects of the Bulldog program, from recruiting and scouting to coordinating practice sessions, match administration and strength & conditioning. BULLDOGS IN THE HALL OF FAME Bunmi Akinnusotu, Class of 2003 The Bulldog women’s volleyball program inducted its seventh member into the Bryant Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 in standout Bunmi Akinnusotu, who joined a select group that has seen three former players inducted in the past four years. During her career at Bryant, Akinnusotu was a dominant force at the net and still stands second all-time in total blocks and block assists. She is currently fourth all-time with 161 blocks in a single season and finished her career with 160 solo blocks (No. 3), 339 block assists (No. 2) and 499 total career blocks (No. 2) from 1999-2002. Akinnusotu is still ranked fifth all-time in kills (1434) and seventh in both matches played (155) and sets played (538). Standing first all-time in career hitting percentage at a .355 clip, Akinnusotu is also among the program’s most decorated alumnae. Named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year in 2002, Akinnusotu earned three first team all-conference honors and three all-region selections — including two first-team honors — over her four-year career. To this day, Akinnusotu still ranks in the NE10’s top-10 in career kills, hitting percentage and blocks. She was the recipient of Bryant's Omar Shareef Spirit Award and NCAA Woman of the Year while also being named Bryant's 2001 Female Athlete of the Year and receiving both the 2003 Jim Thorpe Athletic Award and the 2000 Peggy Stone Emerging Leader Award.
Maria Bras Class of 1995 The Bryant volleyball program had been successful for quite some time through the late 1980s. But with the arrival of a freshman from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, in 1991, the Bulldogs enjoyed an unprecedented level of prosperity that carries on to this day. Maria Bras quickly established herself as one of the top players in the Northeast-10 Conference after earning the league’s Freshman of the Year award in 1991. In that rookie season, she led the Bulldogs to their first regular-season conference championship. Bras spearheaded the most successful season in Bryant volleyball history as a senior in 1994, when she carried the Bulldogs to the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament, completing a four-year stretch in which the Bulldogs were a combined 116-39. She finished her career with 2,045 kills, good for No. 2 all-time, and was the first player in school history with more than 1500. She had an incredible 16 triple-doubles in the 1992 season with 24 in her career and was an all-tournament selection in every tournament in which she played in her four years. Bryant’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1994 and 1995, Bras ranks No. 2 in points scored in program history (2,487).
Meribah Dean Class of 1996 Meribah Dean clearly has all of the requisite athletic credentials to be enshrined with the elite Bryant student-athletes in history. Dean was a Second Team AllNortheast-10 Conference selection and an AVCA All-Northeast Region pick in 1994 before capping off her playing career by becoming the third player in program history to earn NE-10 Player of the Year honors in 1995. Her senior season saw her establish the Bulldogs’ single-season hitting percentage record — a mark that stood until 2001 — while she currently stands fourth on the career kills chart (1,487). But Dean’s career was about so much more than volleyball. Dean, Bryant’s NCAA Woman of the Year, served as the head student athletic trainer in her senior year and was a member of both the Captains’ Council and the Committee on Sexual Assault.
Jenn Carvalho Class of 1998 A four-year member of the Bryant women’s volleyball team from 1994 to 1997, Jennifer Carvalho enters the Hall of Fame as one of the top setters in program history. A native of East Providence, R.I. and graduate of East Providence High School, Carvalho made an immediate impact with the Bulldogs since first stepping onto campus. Carvalho opened her career by earning 1994 Northeast-10 and AVCA regional Freshman of the Year honors and concluded her illustrious run with a Bryant Athlete of the Year distinction as a senior in 1998. During her career, she was a two-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection (1996, 1997) and earned AVCA All-Northeast Region honors in 1997. The school’s third-ranked career assists leader (4,702), Carvalho ranks in the program’s top-20 in career service aces (178), career digs (1,043), career total blocks (178) and career sets played (481). Team captain as a senior and member of the Captains’ Council, Carvalho led the Bulldogs to a 99-47 overall record during her four-year career.
Noelle Emmette Class of 1992 More than 13 seaons may have passed since the Middletown, Conn. native suited up for the Bulldogs, but Noelle Emmette's name still stands among the all-time Bulldog greats. During her outstanding career from 1988 to 1991, Emmette garnered three all-conference honors and was not only named the 1988 conference Rookie of the Year, but closed out her career as the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year in 1991. As a senior, Emmette helped lead Bryant to a perfect 8-0 conference record and 26-6 mark overall. That year, she paced the Bulldogs with 379 kills and hit an astounding .330 offensive. In addition, her .917 hitting percentage in a win over New Hampshire College remains a record today — one that will be hard to top.
Lorraine Hudak Class of 1999 Every Bryant varsity women’s sports program owes a debt of gratitude to Lorraine Hudak. When Hudak joined the Bryant staff in 1977, the women’s athletics programs consisted of just three sports — and Hudak was the coach of all three. But over the course of just six years, Bryant more than doubled its sponsorship of varsity women’s sports and was enjoying success that belied just how young those programs were. As an administrator, she was well ahead of the curve as well, serving as women’s athletics director in a time where such positions weren’t prevalent on college campuses. Perhaps best known as the architect of women’s volleyball at Bryant, Hudak led her squad to an 18-2 record in just its third season of existence, and her teams registered five consecutive 20-win seasons through the early 1980s. Today, Bryant’s women’s varsity teams are 11 in number and all are competitive at the Division I level. And every one of them can point to Lorraine Hudak as the pioneer of women’s athletics at Bryant, the person who put them where they are today.

Marcie Monaco Class of 1999 In the long and storied history of Bryant University women's volleyball, former standout Marcie Monaco's name shines as one of the best of all time. The 1998 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Co-Most Valuable Player, Monaco is second all-time in career service aces (326), fifth all-time in most attacks in a season (1,478), fifth in career digs (1,764) and ninth all-time in career points. She is ranked fifth all-time in Northeast10 Conference history with 1,764 career digs and is second with 326 career service aces. Monaco was integral in taking the Bulldogs to the program’s second ECAC championship as a senior in 1998 after leading Bryant to a conference tournament title the same year. She guided the Bulldogs to an NCAA tournament berth in 1997 as well as an NE-10 regular-season title in 1995.
