CARRIE ANN PLANK
Elemental Lattices
Sept. 10th Oct. 25th, 2022
Bryant Street Gallery is pleased to announce Elemental Lattices, a new exhibition by San Francisco based artist Carrie Ann Plank. Bursting and radiating, Plank’s hypnotic forms are easy to fall into and get lost amongst the oscillating labyrinthian patterns Delve in and explore her work for yourself at Bryant Street Gallery from September 10th to October 25th. The opening reception will be on Saturday, September 10th, from 3 5 PM, with the artist in attendance
Plank has a meticulous (anachronistic and laborious, as she calls it) process. Her hands on approach allows the complex data she handles to feel more human and reflective than the high tech, digitized way that it is usually presented to us She uses mathematical equations to create art that imitates the structure of the micro and macrocosmos, of particles and the universe Each of her pieces is the product of a multitude of media. The idea starts as a drawing or digital model based on different types of data patterns, algorithms, and equations; is made into a woodcut, often with the use of CNC routers and laser cutters Lastly, the woodcut design is transferred to the final product. The woodcut approach means that the resulting design emerges from the absence of pigment The empty spaces overlay to create dazzling patterns of light Their layered application makes a vibrating effect, giving off the appearance of movement over the fields of color
Her process translates a concrete set of data, whether it is about TEMS photography from electron microscopy, moiré effects, historical forms, or another area of math or science, into an abstract physical form While she uses a variety of data as input, the outputs have repeating patterns, suggesting an underlying, unifying structure at the core of the universe. Her pieces evoke the certainty, the brilliance and coldness, of inorganic nature: from atoms and molecules to the cosmos These patterns construct our everyday lives, though we rarely stop to recognize them. Plank’s collection is a meditation on the complexity and mysteriousness of the natural world’s building blocks The objectivity of the natural, physical world is often lost among the haziness of social constructs. In her own words, “I really look to concrete the substructure of the universe and embrace the stability and truth of science”
Carrie Ann Plank is a San Francisco based artist working in installation, printmaking, and painting Focusing on layers of sophisticated geometry, Plank examines the space of intersecting patterns to describe new structures The work utilizes mathematical equations to create multiple overlapping impressions that reveal additional distinct pattern formations The resulting forms are space in between, the intercession, of concrete data. Plank is active in the Bay Area community, having served on committees such as Root Division, California Society of Printmakers, and Art for AIDS Her work has been featured in a variety of local collections including the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco and Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts.
While her ties to the Bay Area are strong, her art is represented in public and private collections all over the world, such as the Fine Art Archives of the Library of Congress, the Guanlan Print Art Museum in China, and Museum Meermano in the Hague, Netherlands.
