As our conversation unfolded with partner John Umbanhowar, so did their associative list of Who’s Who in the architectural world. This, of course, peaked my passionate interest and architectural curiosity, as we uncovered some of their own working history with architectural masters Philip Johnson, Phlippe Starck and Richard Neutra. Our conversation with John is an insightful journey through past and present, and where John answers his own question of “What would Neutra do?” Jan Horn: How would you define modern luxury living? John Umbanhowar: The era of mid-century modern, with its very modest elements and the emphasis on quality over quantity. Nowadays, that is hard to find. There is something very luxurious about the efficiency of space and its uses. The ability to appreciate every aspect of the space and how it all works together, versus building something so large that it is impossible to really appreciate or spend time in all of its spaces. JH: What are a few of your favorite design elements or principles behind mid-century architecture? JU: There exists a philosophy of honesty in building. The simple expression of materials and how they are applied—1956 Neutra-designed Troxell House is a great example of that. JH: What were some of your thoughts about working behind an icon such as Neutra? JU: We were fortunate to have Neutra’s project manual and original drawings for the Troxell House. It was as if we were sitting inside his office, we could see how he was executing his detailing. Neutra’s detailing is amazing, with provocative simplicity. JH: Specifically, what is it that draws you to modernism as a building style? JU: Modernism encourages play with materials in a way that promotes an openness to explore space and material without traditional building method iconography. The style allows you to explore phenomenology of what a material is or light is, and how they work ensemble to form space.
